      4 out of 5 stars Love the 'Vintage' Sound. . . .......2006-02-14

      The absolute 'vintage' era of dancehall music existed near the time of its most modern birth, which was the era of King Yellowman, Josey Wales, Charlie Chaplin and others (there's an excellent album called The Biggest Dancehall Anthems 1979-1982, that you should check out for that era). That was widely regarded the proverbial 'Golden Age' of dancehall music.

      However, if you, like me, were either not born yet, or born in that era ('81!!!) then you grew up listening to artists who followed the legends and were establishing themselves. Artists like the more well known Shabba Ranking, Buju Banton, and Mad Cobra comprise the era which I regard as my 'vintage era'. That somewhat battle-tested digital ragga age which reigned in the dance in the early to mid 90's is, to this day, absolutely beautiful to my ears!

      Mega Banton was one of my favorite dj's of the era. Yes, absolutely he sounded exactly like Buju Banton and on a good day, you might not even be able to tell the 2 apart. But Mega made quite a name for himself on his own merits and acknowledged the similarities between the two. He combined his wit with a sense of humor, you would never see the artist without a big smile on his face, and just between you and I, Mega could flow!

      First Position is arguably the bets of the 3 albums that he released and was his first album, and one of the earlier albums that helped establish VP Records in the modern dancehall era. The best tune here is without a doubt the mammoth shot Sound Bwoy Killing, so nice they play it twice, the second time in a remix stylee over a BARRY WHITE backing and Mega modifies the flow and fits right over the riddim to make the interesting (forever odd) quite decent.

      Besides the boomshot, check Wrong or Right over a riddim that I never tire of hearing (the name of which oddly drifts my mind right now, but is the same from Beenie's Gyal Dem Suga). Mr Mention, Plan and Defend, definitely Decision, probably my second favorite tune here, love that tune and the wicked Seh Dem a Wicked Man. The highlights at the end are fantastic, the 3 combinations, the best of which is the HILARIOUS No Ninja, No Buju with Ricky General on which the two artists mockingly imitate Buju and Ninja Man as they were both compared to the 2 more well known artists constantly.

      Overall, this album is one for my own heart. Had I reviewed it in '94, it would have been purely average, hear it all of the time, but First Position is different now. Not all of the albums from that era would have the same effect after all of this time. First Position is a oddly overlooked records which takes you back to the time when artists like Mega, Ricky General, Terror Fabulous, Louie Culture and Little Lenny were always bubbling somewhere on the chart and any true dancehall fan needs at least one of those albums somewhere in the collection.

      If you don't own this cut then you are missing out on some of the best overall reggae beats! Mega Banton, like other great reggae artist, just seems to flow with the riddims. You wouldn't know that because you don't have this cut! Big Up!

        Mega Scum is the first in a new mix series from well-known DJ/producer/remixer, The Scumfrog. While the smoothly transitioned CD -which features new and exclusive tracks from the likes of White Leppard, Gaby Dershin, Swamy, and Scumfrog himself- may be the main reason people will buy this, the cover instantly doubles the entertainment value. It may not be the first "dude looks like a lady" cover in music history, but Scumfrog's nugget pouch hanging down under his miniskirt is a first in my books. Finally, club tunes with some balls. The music is obviously trendy, but, as illustrated by the cover, there is enough ejaculatory grime here to freak out the squares. The persistent, chugging beats may never stop, but the sounds pull in influences from all manner of genre and subgenre so as to leave the IDM guys mildly amused, if not impressed. In any case, for the cover alone, this should be this year's number one Valentine's Day gift.
