Part of what Bob Newhart mastered, earlier on stand-up albums like The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart and The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! and later on his long-running TV series The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, was capturing a brand of Everyman neuroses and heightening it, bringing mundane, common scenarios into the realm of the absurd--and the absurdly funny. Newhart also perfected playing a character involved in a conversation with the other party in absentia, as in one of his most famous routines, "King Kong," in which he plays the part of an Empire State Building security guard who calls his boss the night King Kong makes his famous ascent. ("Yes, sir, I looked in the handbook index under 'unauthorized personnel' and 'people without passes' and 'apes,' and 'ape's toes,' but it's not in there....") Something Like This... is a generous sampling of Newhart's best stand-up bits, and while some of his topics--airplanes, hating to fly--have now been so overdone as to be comic faux pas, rather than making his material seem dated they often serve to demonstrate just how rare a talent he is simply because the routines still elicit involuntary snorts of laughter some 30 years later. --Mark Hunstman

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Still funny after all this time.......2007-05-19

This has all his best sketches, and despite the passage of time are still very funny. Some of the sketches are dated, e.g. flying on a turbo prop plane, others such as "the introduction of tobacco" and "Driving instructor" you can listen to over and over and still laugh yourself silly.

5 out of 5 stars If love Bob..............2007-04-11

If you love Bob Newhart you will love this set. I bought for my husband and he has loved it.

5 out of 5 stars True Comedy Lives!!!.......2007-03-09

Bob at his best. Performed early in his career, it foreshadowed the great success he would know with The Bob Newhart Show with Susie Pleshete and other cast members.

5 out of 5 stars Cannot be less than 5 stars.......2007-02-05

5 stars PLUS. Quality of the CD is excellent, as good as when I was listening on my record player (remember those?)back in the late 50's, early 60's.
What can be said about Bob Newhart that hasn't been said. Simply, he is a classic and the situations he depicts, hilarious. I probably listened to his records over a hundred times back then and I am sure my CD will get about the same play. I am anxious to play this CD for my kids, the generation that remembers the Bob Newhart Show on TV, but never heard the records. I honestly prefer Bob Newhart as the original stand up comedian as opposed to the TV star.

5 out of 5 stars Newhart the Great.......2007-01-11

Probably one of the greatest stand-up comics of our era or any other. He really never did a bad bit. This two disc set manages to collect all the choice routines in one place - you could probably issue another set of additional material and it would be as welcome as this one. This is a real treat and Rhino deserves much praise for giving us this superlative audio archive of a great comedian.

Album Description

As we explore the depths of our "self", our "souls", through massage, relaxation, and other healing modalities, we gain experience and knowingness. The music from Detaching The World Vol. 1 is a transient, which allows for this knowingness to occur in a peaceful, tranquil, and comforting environment.

This CD has been created to provide over 60 minutes in running time without the use of vocals or percussion. Emil Gagliardi has introduced a new style of guitar called "The Nuit's Effect" named after its rich soothing textures and deep earthy tones. From the opening cut of "Tranquil Sunrise", Gagliardi's swirling guitar immediately sets the perfect mood for massage and relaxation. The density of "The Valley Beyond" swallows you up in a tapestry of color similar to a warm blanket while the hauntingly beautiful "Fallen Angel" resembles a fresh new day after a storm.

Gagliardi's vision of creating the perfect massage and relaxation music sets Detaching The World (Vol. 1) apart from all others. Its purpose is to serve gentleness and ease like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

5 out of 5 stars Promising Debut by Ambient Guitarist Emil Gagliardi.......2007-05-23

Although guitarist Emil Gagliardi's debut CD was designed for massage, meditation, and relaxation, it is much more than that. The ambient release features soothing, New Age-style synthesizer sounds generated entirely by Emil's electric guitar. The result is not only a great therapeutic tool, but also a legitimate work of sonic art in the vein of Andy Summers' classic ambient guitar album, Mysterious Barricades. Emil Gagliardi is a guitarist to keep an eye out for. [...]

Album Description

In the second installment of the series, Connecting The Universe Music has released a new relaxing journey with Detaching The World Vol. 2 - Ambient music for massage/relaxation/meditation. Through exploration of the unconscious, this music was designed as an offering by the artist to bring about complete relaxation to the listener. It allows for the unknown self to awaken and remember with comfort and ease.

Musician and creator Emil Gagliardi brings to us nine new tracks with Vol. 2. This CD provides over 63 minutes in running time without the use of vocals or percussion. As the opening track "Peaceful Country" begins, Gagliardi's unique and inimitable style of ambient guitar immediately sets the tone for a tranquil relaxing atmosphere. On "Mirror", you feel yourself sinking deeper into the gentle hands of what the artist calls "The Nuit's Effect" while "The Fellowship" and "The Fellowship Reprise" are a meditation of three soothingly calm guitars journeying to the mystical unknown. "Hawaiian Compressions" is a three piece composition symbolizing the warming atmosphere of the sun while gently slipping into the earthy picturesque tones of "Healing Within". The last track, "Pulse", is the capture of a meditation right outside the artist's home where the ocean, mountains, and sky share one relaxed and rejuvenated heartbeat.

Emil Gagliardi continues to provide seekers of total relaxation with his unique and one of a kind style of music. As heard in the bestselling Detaching The World Vol. 1, his devotion to creating serene music for the healing arts goes unsurpassed by his peers. His music bestows upon the listener gentleness and ease like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

5 out of 5 stars Ambient Guitarist Emil Gagliardi Dazzles on Second Album.......2007-05-23

Emil Gagliardi shows what he's made of in this spectacular follow-up. Laying down atmospheric riffs and hypnotic patterns against a backdrop of lush guitar-generated textures, Gagliardi creates canyons of sound that seem to come from the heavens and reverberate across a vast stretch of land beneath a starry expanse of sky. Combining the guitar stylings of Andy Summers, Robert Fripp, Allan Holdsworth, and even George Harrison, Gagliardi forges a unique and unparalleled style all his own. [...]

5 out of 5 stars serene ambient guitar to help aid a stressful mind.......2004-10-27

Lately I've been submerging myself in yoga, morning meditation, T'ai Chi, and massage therapy to help my mind, body and spirit cope with the loss of a loved one. My sister (who raves about this artist) gave me this cd on my birthday in hopes that it would aid through the grieving process and help me relax.

Soon after my birthday, I finally had an afternoon to do nothing but try and unwind. I took my portable cd player outside with this cd and lied in my hammock. A few minutes after hitting play, I closed my eyes and had the most intense visualizations. It was as if each note from this music embraced my soul and projected a movie of warmth and comfort in my eyelids.

A few hours went by as I lay in my hammock listening to this cd repeat over and over. The calming effects of this music, combined with the hammock, had relaxed me beyond words. It was as if the stress detached my world (no pun intended).

As I look through the liner notes, I notice that this entire cd was created with guitars. Never in my life have I heard guitar sound so angelic and peaceful. All of this cd is great, yet the piece of music that comforts my heart the most is Pulse. Pulse has a calm heartbeat sound with this airy guitar melody that dances gently through the notes. Absoulutly beautiful!

I am bringing this cd to my next massage appointment in hopes that my therapist too will feel the heavenly ambiance that this music provides.

5 out of 5 stars My client's favorite pick for bodywork!.......2004-06-06

Just got volume 2. Delicious! What an encore. Nicely divergent from Volume 1. It seems to be more 'grounded' than the prior work but still retaining the flavors of space. You can tell this artist respects the delicate atmosphere needed for massage. This cd is successful with a client who is beyond picky with his musical choices during our sessions. Muchas gracias!

5 out of 5 stars the most creative musical journey.......2003-12-15

Having had so many incredible experiences listening and working with Detaching The World Vol. 1, I purchased Vol. 2 without hesitation. Although different from the first CD, the musicians style of meditative guitar transforms me and resonates with me similiar to Vol. 1. It seems as if the music puts me in a trance sending me to another place - a place where everything is calm and nothing can go wrong. My thoughts disappear and I capture the importance of being in every moment. This CD is mellow enough for deep relaxation yet also great music to play in the car on a long roadtrip. Either way it is definitely a journey that everyone should experience. I also find it important to listen from beginning to end without stopping - each track almost leads you to the next. It's as if a story is formed in track 1 that sends you wanting to know more in track 2. This continues until the "grand finale" which is a "heartbeat"-like song - sending you immediataly inward on your own journey. This is a beautiful CD.

In an era when most old rock stars are left to recycle their greatest hits for megatours and MTV Unplugged, it's refreshing to know that Van Morrison still pours on all the originality and wit he had when he made Moondance. On Days Like This, Morrison continues his lifelong exploration of the human psyche, offering up highly entertaining and danceable (yes, danceable!) tunes about everything from love to manic depression. As always, Morrison's vocals rumble along through intelligent lyrics, plowing up a range of emotions almost too numerous to catalog. Needless to say, the sweet, soulful harmonies of Morrison's adroit backup singers and Pee Wee Ellis's fabulous horn arrangements serve as fabulous counterpoints to Van the Man's energetic and pointed performances. When all is said and done Morrison sums it up best in "Songwriter," a self-effacing ditty about the job he has done, and still does, so very well. --L.A. Smith

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my allmost intro to the man.......2007-02-21

This is actually the record that mad me decide to like this guys music. I heard the 'best of' allready and that made me very curious.
There's something on this record that makes me feel at ease and happy. Perfect Fit really puts a smile on my face. But the favorite track must be Ancient Highway. This is where Van really gets into it. Untill this day he didn't make a song like that anymore; which is a shame. The backing band on this cd is very tight. A very diverse record that I never get tired of.

4 out of 5 stars Slow Dancin With Van.......2006-04-30

This review refers to "Days Like This"(CD)..Van Morrison

As a collector of Van Morrison Albums, I had to have this album. After reading the mixed reviews here, I was expecting something less then mediocre. However, and to my delight, I was once again swept away by Van's lulling voice, the great music and musicians to be found here. I've had it on my changer for the past couple of weeks, and there's no sign of it ever coming off!

"Days Like This" has 12 tracks mixed for easy listening, romantic evenings and swaying to the music. Opening with "A Perfect Fit", with some wonderful horn arrangements, Van will then play "Russian Roulette" with your mind. Grab your honey for a nice slow dance in a beautiful duet with Shana Morrison, "You Don't Know Me". Another duet with Shana is the lovely "I'll Never Be Free".

Although a 'mood' album, there were couple of the songs, that seemed too moody and a little out of place. "Underlying Depression", and "Melancholia" kind of bring you down after the others(my only reason for 4 stars instead of 5). Then "Days Like This"('When it's not always raining, when there's no one complaining...') and "In the Afternoon"('Wanna make, wanna make, wanna make, wanna make love to you..." get you right back in the mood.

The CD(Exile Prod.) is a very good quality. The music sounds great on the stereo. A booklet is included with words to most of the songs. Check out the words to the very pensive "Ancient Highway". See buying info for complete list of tracks. The CD runs close to a nice hour of tunes for Van Morrison fans.

"Baby, this could be the perfect fit..."(well, almost)
Enjoy...Laurie

2 out of 5 stars So Disappointing.......2006-03-19

I love Van Morrison and have done so for years. Veedon Fleece, St Dominic's Preview, Into The Music, Moondance, Enlightenment. I can't imagine my life without these albums. I would love to rate this CD better, but it is just so disappointing. Apart from 'Days Like This' and 'Ancient Highway' the dreadful backing vocals and utter, desperate sense of making songs just for the sake of it pervades this tedious, embarrassing album. There is precious little of any worth at all. If you are new to Van Morrison, please listen to something else, or you are likely to miss out on truly wonderful, inspiring music.

1 out of 5 stars Van's worst album..........2005-09-12

I have to place this even lower than A PERIOD OF TRANSITION- which was actually a very good album spoiled by it's mix- and INARTICULATE SPEECH OF THE HEART- which was weakened by watery synths and gauzey production, but gets extra points for it's reckless disregard of any commercial sense. I even place this lower than YOU WIN AGAIN- which in all honesty I've only put on twice, and not managed to hear in it's entirety.

DAYS LIKE THIS is actually a crying shame because half of it is very good. Remove the painful duets with his banshee daughter Shana Morrison, and get rid of "Perfect Fit" and "Songwriter" (his worst song ever) and you're left with a satisfying album, with some really great late-period Van songs. In fact, subtract those four songs and you've got a dead-ringer for Van's best album of the '90's. The only thing standing in it's way are the utterly clueless backup vocals from Brian Kennedy (who soured 2 albums and a live retrospective before finally making a perfectly competent turn on 1999's BACK ON TOP.)

5 out of 5 stars Van Still Continues to Amaze.......2003-11-06

Just like most Van Morrison albums, you can put "Days like this" on and just play it straight through and enjoy. I consider Van to be one of the best songwriter's of our time and he proves it again with this album and there isn't really one true commmercial hit on this album, which is unique. The title track along with others are enjoyable but other tracks like "underlying depression" and "Ancient Highway" are truly touching and emotional. I would recommend it to any old or new Van Morrison fan. I rate it in my top three favorite Van albums of all time.

This is a fun musical experience for kids of all ages. My son (age 9) has memorized almost all of the songs and loves the humor in the music. we have given this CD as a gift numerous times and every one seems to love it.

4 out of 5 stars Truly a Family Party.......2007-01-19

Good CD to listen to with the kids. Great change of pace for when the kids start to wear out one of their other favorite CDs. A few of the songs are geared more for the adults than the kids but a good mix of songs for everyone.

OK,I admit it...I ordered this CD because of one song, My Hair Had A Party Last Night (The phrase has become a regular morning greeting in our house.) The great surprise about this CD...every song is a winner. No telling kids what to do or think, just great songs about cool stuff that sounds like fun! We love it!

Love, love, love!!! I have given this CD numerous times as a gift. Just a great collection of songs! I DARE you to NOT try to count along with 18 Wheels on a Big Rig!

For "adult" Trout, check out "Reel Life"...I listen to it all the time, even after owning it for about 7 years now. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars kids music for adults.......2004-05-10

For everyone who has ever said "not AGAIN" when loading traditional "kids" music in the car, this is the album for your family. We got ours on cassette and wore it out; we're still not tired of it. Who can resist a group that counts to 18 in roman numerals and gets it right? The songs are singable, danceable, and great fun. It's got just the right mix of fast and slow, silly and serious, and none of the annoying frenetic goofiness often heard in kids albums.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Tribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars this has the depth you need..........2007-02-17

I don't believe you need to be ga-ga over Radiohead to enjoy this CD. This CD, it's all piano (w/o vocals) if you didn't already know that going in, will provide an even deeper appreciation of the textures & depth of the Radiohead catalog. Mr. O'Riley does takes some artistic liberties with the songs, albeit minor, but in so doing he unleashes the potential they all have. And this potential is truly staggering---some selections are nothing short of gorgeous.
Hold me to this: you WILL be floored by this CD. it's well worth the purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Oddly Boring.......2006-07-16

I adore Radiohead, and really enjoy solo piano. I should love this disc, but I don't. Even though the wonderful creepiness of Radiohead is completely absent, I would be willing to chalk that up to artistic interpretation. But that's not what bugs me about this disc. What really bugs me is his style of playing. He relies on resonance and the transcript is completely devoid of silence. The result is a droning wall of notes, and all the pieces sound the same. It reminds me of Windham Hill recordings, but without the expression. Get Yorke's new album, Eraser, if you need a Radiohead fix, or get George Winston if you want solo Piano. I really wish I could recommend this, but I just can't.

4 out of 5 stars a bit disappointing.......2006-07-11

O'Riley takes some liberties here, and that's fine. I'm a bit disappointed by his dynamic range, which is a bit predictable from song to song, and also with his tendency to overload the songs with schizophrenic ramblings. The craziness works well at times -- see "There There" for a time when it works well -- and other times it is overwhelming (see: "Nice Dream").

Despite a sometimes overloaded sound, the song list is so attractive and O'riley hits so many high notes (if you will..) that the CD is well worth owning. I prefer the "True Love Waits" album.

5 out of 5 stars Cocktail Party Radiohead.......2006-03-21

I own the first Christopher O'Reily Radiohead Tribute - True Love Waits. If you love his stunning piano in that, or if you love stunning piano altogether, you will love Hold Me To This. I am an avid lover of all things Radiohead turned into wordless music lullabyes and this one does not dissapoint.

1 out of 5 stars Good effort.......2006-03-02

Sound all the same...listen to the samples before you buy it. If your a fan of radiohead you wont like it...if your a fan of the piano you wont like it. But I give my respect to the musician for making the effort to replicate already beutiful music.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST SANDI PATTI CD!!.......2006-11-15

The year was 1986. I was at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville with a church group. Sandi Patti was giving her "Let There Be Praise" concert. The lights dimmed, smoke billowed out of the stage, the track to "Let There Be Praise" began and Sandi made her entrance from the wings. We soared like Eagles that night! THe rafters came down, almost!! She launched into "Hosanna" right after "Praise" then got her first standing ovation of the night with "Unshakeable Kingdom". The rest of the evening went like that. She sang every song from this incredible collection that night and its still the best concert I have ever attended by anyone, anywhere and I've been to many living in Nashville. Nothing Sandi has done since can compare to this incredible masterpiece! As one reviewer noted above, this is like attending your own Sandi Patti concert and every time I play this CD its like that memorable night in 1986 all over again.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFULLY ANNOINTED.......2005-08-15

Beautifully annointed praise and worship. KING of Glory will make your faith soar!
One of my alltime favorite praise tapes.
May GOD Bless you as you enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Songs.......2005-03-25

When I first started listing to Sandi Patty's music, this was her new album. Ok, so it's been a few years since then, but I still love it and listen to it often.

It opens with two songs of pure praise. "Let There Be Praise" gets things off on a fast note, and Sandi is backed by an impressive choir. "Hosanna" follows in the same theme a Palm Sunday picture of praise.

Things slow down a little with "Shepherd of My Heart." The first time I heard this song, I fell in love with it's commitment to the God Who truly guides our every step.

Then comes the highlight of this disc, "Love in Any Language." The theme is what humans of every race and color share in common, love. It's a moving piece with an even bigger choir. It sounds incredible.

"Face to Faith" is a fun, upbeat song reminding us to face any trials in our lives with faith.

And of course there's "Was it a Morning like This?" This song captures the joy of creation that first Easter morning in a way I'd never thought of before I heard it.

Obviously, it all these years behind me, I know these songs backwards and forwards. Yet it's still a great listen. These songs have been a big part of my life for a lot of years.

Sandi's style of music isn't heard that much any more, and it's a real shame. There's just something about the inspirational genre that I find I miss.

If you want your music to uplift and lead you to praise our Creator, this is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars 1986 Award winning album.......2003-03-16

This is still the single best Sandi Patty album of all time with inspirational pop, thrilling moments and orchestrations and performance second to none. This album experience is the closest to the experience of a Sandi Patty concert.
