4 out of 5 stars The Best and the Rest.......2007-07-23

This collection has all of the Cranberries hits that the casual fan knows. For a causal fan though it also has a bunch of tracks that you've never heard and could have gone without hearing. But what the hell, I got the songs I wanted, may as well fill the cd up anyway.

4 out of 5 stars The Cranberries Singles 1992-2002.......2007-04-17

I will admit the title "Best" is deceptive, but the record company did many of us a favor who own the Cranberries albums. This compilation offers the single versions and created new edits, which is clearly stated in the booklet. Imagine trying to buy all eighteen songs (pictured in the booklet) individually? The last two songs on this CD, making the total twenty were previously unreleased. The Pop-Rockin' "Stars" is no token throw-away. It one of their better songs in the last phase of the Cranberries. I like the single versions better on this CD and album versions better on the individual albums if that makes sense. A true "Best" is owning "Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We? - Complete", "No Need To Argue - Complete" and this compilation. The other indivdual songs is personal choice. The band also had the fans vote for their favourite non-single - "Daffodil Lament". So what is offered here is sampler of their five albums. For a beginner, it's good enough. For a big fan, it closes the book unless the band gets back together. In the 1990's the Dave Matthews Band and the Cranberries were Modern Rock's best.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Music derived straight from the heart.......2005-03-16

For years now Real Music Records has put out several CDs in the 2002 series. This, 'The Sacred Well', contains the "best" tracks from prior albums such as 'River Of Stars', 'Land Of Forever', 'Across An Ocean of Dreams', 'Chrysalis', 'Freedom To Love', and two new songs (the opener and closer) written specifically for this album. I usually prefer my music with more of an upbeat tempo but I find this perfect to unwind to after a stressful day. And while these instrumentals are ideal for meditation, yoga or relaxation, they often provide an uplifting sound to successfully soothe the spirit, no matter what your doing, with beautiful compositions that are as magical as the dreamy song titles make them out to be (in other words they're not at all boring or dull). If you choose to immerse yourself in these warm pieces filled with delicate strings, piano, acoustic guitar, flutes, harps, and the occasional light, airy vocals, you will not be disappointed. Life can sometimes be hectic and unpredictable so go ahead and put time aside to slow things down a bit...

My guess is if you enjoy the likes of Enya, you'll love this as well.

4 out of 5 stars A very peaceful and soothing CD.......2003-06-18

this is a wonderful introduction to the music of Pamela & Randy Copus, the duo otherwise known as 2002. if you're unfamiliar with their work, this is a great way to start. For fans who are familiar with their music, perhaps just an addition to the collection. Pam's lovely flute and Randy's fine work can also be found on Kevin Kern's newest CD, The Winding Path. It is just lovely. Hopefully they'll collaborate on other music in the future. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2002-11-08

"The Sacred Well" is a "best of" collection with eight selections from four of 2002's previous albums as well as two new tracks and two from recent Real Music compilations. As with their earlier releases, the music is sweet, optimistic, and expertly crafted. For this reviewer, it is also a little like cotton candy - very enjoyable, but there isn't much substance. As a gentle backdrop for other activities or for music to relax with, it doesn't get any smoother than this. If you are not familiar with 2002, this is a great starter. Some of the tracks border on ambient or space music, but all are also melodic. Guitars, flutes, keyboards, and wordless vocals give 2002 a distinctive sound that is fairly definitive of new age music: soothing, uplifting, and very pretty. The two new tracks, "Stardust" and "Full Circle" are lovely, but no new ground is broken, indicating that the duo has hit on a formula that is working for them, and will most likely continue along the same lines.

5 out of 5 stars Once again 2002 doesn't disappoint.......2002-10-24

I'm already a 2002 fan and definitely snapped this one up when I saw it! I do agree however with a previous review, no songs from Wings nor Savitri were included. Savitri is my absolute favorite, I highly recommend that CD to anyone! It still is however a beautifully well done masterpiece. There's no better way to escape from reality..relax to sleep..or just find some peace in this world than to listen to any one of 2002's CD's I reccommend this to anyone who needs some peace and beauty in their lives :o)

4 out of 5 stars This seems incomplete...........2002-10-17

This album is said to be a collection of the "best" music of 2002, though how the record company could make such a choice is a puzzle to me. After being smitten by their earlier album, Across an Ocean of Dreams, I eagarly snapped up this one as well, only to discover that none of the tracks on their first two albums, Wings and Savitri, are here. Are they implying that I should never buy those albums? Instead, we have four new tracks, two that were only on samplers, and two that were composed just for the new album. Perhaps 2002 should have composed more music and put them on a totally new album along with these four tracks. I think it would have been better if this album had been titled "A 2002 Anthology" and tracks from their first two albums had been included. I actually like some tracks from the Ocean album better that were NOT put on the "best of" collection. Those of you that have bought all five of the earlier works of 2002 may still enjoy this due to the new tracks, but new fans of this artist must not think they have nothing to gain from getting the older albums. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the ear of the listener, and in the hearts of the 2002 members themselves, no doubt!

Let me just say that if you are a fan of Kyuss or Queens of the Stone Age, you NEED this album....John Garcia of Kyuss actually performs on tracks 3 and 10....every song is catchy but not poppy sounding. My particular favorite tracks are "you would if you loved me" "summer song" "passive aggressive" "it's hard" and "nursery rhyme number 1" my favorite cd of 2004....you can hear some stuff on myspace.com/biblicalproofofufos....their new cd just came out...you can get it at stonerrock.com....This cd is currently not available on that website.

Album Description

Following in the footsteps of "Across the Bridge" (Best Acoustic Instrumental Album of the Year-Finalist, New Age Voice Music Awards, July 2000), Peter Janson's "Sometimes From Here" is an evocative recording with artistry, emotion, and spirituality blended into exquisite new acoustic guitar music that will inspire you to play it again and again. Rising from eclectic roots, Peter's music is sometimes from here, sometimes from there, but always from his heart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you're looking for Jazz, then this isn't for you. .......2006-04-01

But if the instrumentals in "Brokeback Mountain" have set you on a quest for gentle no frills guitar music as they have me, then you'll find at least three songs on this album that will qualify as winners: "Still Towards Psyche," "Painting Australia," and -- especially -- "Even When It Rains." I've had the album 24 hours and played " ... Rains" at least that many times. Not that the other 7 songs are losers, it's just that these three were exactly what I was hoping to hear. PS: if you agree, also check out Ed Gerhard's "Howl" and "The Hanging Down" on his "Luna" album.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding music you'll want.......2001-07-30

The music on this CD is magnificent-- some of the best songs I have ever heard. It's obviously not Moz. or Beeth., but Janson's playing is truly masterful, and soulful in its own right. This is now THE most played CD in my collection and wonderful nuances are discovered every time I listen to the it. 'Sometimes' is expressive in a way unlike anything you've heard-- it is acoustic guitar at its finest, but never classical nor folk-y. You might buy it for the novelty, but you'll play it because Janson has a special quality that makes his songs get into your head. If you crave really, really good instrumental music, buy this CD!

        Album Description

Eleven tracks of classical Cambodian Mahaori music dating from the Angkor Period - some recorded here for the first time.

This genre of music was almost completely wiped out during Pol Pot's purge of Cambodian classical musicians and dancers. Fortunately, the music has been passed down orally for centuries and has survived in people's memories, ready to blossom again.

Mahaori music is characterized by a floating quality that brings a sense of energizing peace to the listener. One can feel the complexity of the tropical jungle in the intertwining instrumental lines. It has the perfect balance of emotional intensity and equanimity.

An unexpected benefit of the Cambodian diaspora is this collaboration between Cambodian masters and western classically-trained musicians. The group Rak-Smey Khemera (Light From Heaven Falls On the People of Cambodia) has been performing and touring all over the United States since 1986, bringing traditional Cambodian music to Cambodian and western audiences alike.

The founder and artistic director, Bun Loeung, is known throughout the world as a legendary luminary of all genres of Cambodian music. He has played in every conceivable venue - from the streets of Battambang, opium dens, directing the National Theatre, to performing with the Minnesota Orchestra. His recording "Cambodian Music in Minnesota" was selected by the Library of Congress as one of the best recordings of American Folk life. His 1987 recording, "The New International Trio" (Atomic Theory Records) with Dick Hensold and Barb Weiss won a Minnesota Music Award. Winner of the Just Plain Folks Best Ethnic/World Album 2002

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Minnesota Lutheran It Is Not.......2001-09-25

As a Minnesotan, I am proud of Light from Heaven, a compilation introduced to us by Minnesota Public Radio. If you would dismiss this as mere chauvinism because two of the musicians are well-known on the local musical scene, I wish to lay such suspicions aside. MPR follows a tradition of challenging its listeners with the unique and beautiful, but replays those recordings only upon popular demand.

Sit back, listen to this CD a few times and find peace resonating in your soul (as promised in the liner notes). You may find the roots of Celtic music in some of these pieces. You may find understanding, the opening of doors, the meeting of minds. You may also see a sign of music's significant power to unify. For years, oriental musicians have excelled in playing western music; it is a joy to find western musicians at the feet of oriental masters, then offering us insight into the glories of such a rich culture.

I can't say for sure that Envy's mastermind Niko has reached the upper limits of his ability on 'Sweet Painful Reality', but I can say with conviction that he has produced an expertly shaped opus of progressive gothic rock. Astoundingly, this is his (and Envy's) debut album. If 'Sweet Painful Reality' is only the tip of Niko's creative iceberg, I can hardly wait to hear what will surface as his artistic skills mature. Some songwriters simply seem to have a gift for knowing how to arrange lyric, flowing music. Niko and his cohort Thomas blend brooding keyboard chords, emotionally charged vocals, various electronics, and heavy guitars into a smooth and powerful listening experience. The mood throughout 'Sweet Painful Reality' is generally somber, melancholy, or wistful... but Niko doesn't mope around. Mid-paced tempos drive the music along, and there always seems to be something interesting to listen to popping up over the course of each lengthy track. The full album weighs in at a hefty seventy-one minutes, but it never feels like it's been overextended or bloated with filler. The active and dense instrumental arrangements and generally lively percussion see to it that the listener is never bored. Niko's vocals are the highlight of the album. His voice reminds me of Jon Olivia or Zak Stevens from Savatage... though not as powerful as the latter nor as gruff as the former. Niko delivers the lyrics with an expressive mid-range timbre that is well suited to the style at hand. Too often these days, bands seem to feel that they're obligated to include either a classically trained female vocalist or a growly, menacing male rasper on their albums. It's refreshing to hear a band (if you can call two guys a band, anyhow) rely on a single male vocalist who employs clean vocals over the course of a whole record. Even more pleasing is that the performance never becomes stale, and the lack of vocal variety doesn't hurt the music at all. Note to other bands: having clean, emotionally charged vocals can be just as effective and intense as gravel-throated rasping! Fans of dark, progressive music with a gothic edge are likely to love this album. I can safely recommend it to anyone that appreciates the smoother side of dark music, especially those that enjoy articulate and stirring clean male vocals. For a debut album that was independently funded and produced, Envy's 'Sweet Painful Reality' is a very mature offering with high production values. It is easily on par technically with any other commercial release from the big record labels, and deserves to find its way into the hands of what should become a broad fanbase. 1 out of 5 stars This is not the ENVY from Japan.......2005-05-25

I bought this CD here on Amazon thinking it was a CD from the semi-Mogwai-related (they are on their label in Europe) Japanese band Envy. What I got was a truly awful goth-emo-whine album. Please avoid at all costs if you are looking for the Japanese band. Somehow, this record has received great reviews from others, but I smell a rat. The album is truly abysmal.

5 out of 5 stars Darkness can sing with beauty of angels.......2002-12-01

It's hard anytime in this era to find music that speaks to one or conveys emotions in such away that the listener actually feels them.
Envy's music style is the equivalent of shattering little bits of emotions up like a mirror and piecing them together in such away that it comes out in waves, one can feel happy, sad and completely entranced all at the same time, and the feeling is incredible.
This is one that I do not believe anyone would regret owning, its dark and gothic but soft and melodic at the same time, it will definitely spark anyone's interest who is a fan of well written music, beautifully put together lyrics and a siren voice to top it off.

5 out of 5 stars Creative, dark, passionate music for the soul.......2002-10-19

This album is not only beautiful it speaks to you in dark poetry. Niko has created a masterpiece of soft and heavy sounds that generate a compromising message. The dark, rhythmic atmosphere created by the music will leave you no less than completly satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet... But Hardly Painful.......2002-10-05

Unfortunately, most of the popular music industry of today seems to be all about cookie-cutter, carbon-copied musicians and bands who have all the sparkle of a brightly colored spray painted grocery store meringue cookie...

          ...and just as much substance.

However, when I started exploring the local music scene here in Denver and listening to the music I was coming across, one band and their music drew my full attention in an instant.

          Envy.

Upon hearing the song "Endure" on MP3.com, I was instantly entranced with the voice of lead singer Niko. Then I listened to the lyrics...

Something within the voice and lyrics struck a chord within me that had been left untouched by most other musicians. Listening to the other songs on MP3.com left me wanting more.

          Hence I bought the CD.

Personally I adore all the music contained within this album, my favorites being "Endure" and "Of Heavenly Blood." As to why I have found such a connection with this music, I find it hard to pinpoint exactly. Niko has a wonderful voice, something which I find lacking in most popular artists today. The lyrics of the songs are deep and meaningful. The music itself ultimately completes the enchantment, weaving the voice and the lyrics together masterfully.

I like listening to music within the goth genre. However, I am not one to listen too much to those songs that are deeply depressive, overly angst-ridden, or so angry that their voices sound like the rumbling thunder of a monstrous storm just over the horizon. Hence why I like this CD. It's deep, but not so dark that you can't see the glimmer of daybreak at the end of the long night. It's melodic, but not so slow and soothing that it puts you to sleep.

I can't really compare this band with anyone else that I know of. If I had to put them side by side with another band in way of quality, I would put them up beside Lacuna Coil, another favorite band of mine. Niko is like the male counterpart to Christina Scabbia, and the music of Lacuna Coil strikes the same chord in me that Envy's does.

But of course, these are all merely the ramblings of a now completely in love devoted fangirl.

How you feel about the music when you listen to it is entirely up to you...

... but I have a good feeling that most of you won't be disappointed.
