Great pop music is driven as much by raw emotion as it is classic textures. While this Scottish band excels in the latter trait, Texas has grappled with finding its own voice ever since making its 1988 debut. White on Blonde is the perfect example of an album that sounds right, but feels wrong. The band may borrow key traits from pop history in constructing its gentle blues style, but it woefully fails to give its songs any resonance. From the Motown influenced "Black-Eyed Boy" to the delicately gritty "Halo," the grooves fall into place just fine, but the sentiments ring hollow. Singer Sharleen Spiteri's voice--radiating warmth and soft-focus edginess--is still sweet on the ears; and the band's impenetrable sound will make radio programmers get down on their knees and praise the album-oriented rock gods. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Pure pop heaven........2007-04-16

My favorite songs:

Say What You Want
Halo
Put Your Arms Around Me
Insane
White on Blonde
Ticket To Lie
Breathless

In particular I want to nominate "Put Your Arms Around Me" for one of the best pop songs ever, for the way it build up to the 3:00 minute mark and then just goes to another level. That's what differentiates the good from the great.

3 out of 5 stars seems to lack something.......2005-12-01

There's some really nice songs on this album, Black-Eyed Boy, Halo, Say What You Want. Those three were released as singles in the UK and got loads of airplay. The rest of the album is equaly well produced, there's no bad songs, but I just find I get bored of this album too easily, it seems to lack something, and I dont listen to it often. When I do, the feeling always surfaces that the music isnt pulling all the right strings.

If you see it in the bargain bin it's worth a shot, but I wouldnt pay full price for it. There's usually loads of copies available second hand.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, great music !.......2005-09-12

True beauty of Texas' music is its simplicity. They really can write amazingly simple, yet catchy songs which just grow on you with every time you listen. "White on Blonde" is the culmination of their work through the years which I believe paid off very well for them. Buy this album, enjoy good soft rock music, save live music, love Texas !

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2004-07-26

The very first time I ever listen to this band (Texas) was during the spring of 1997...I was in Amsterdam and I immediately fell in love with this group....Well its 7 years later and I still love them...it bring back good and wonderful memories...God bless them :)

5 out of 5 stars this album had to grow on me........2004-07-11

texas is one of my favorite bands but this album had to grow on me as i prefer the earlier work-southside, ricks road and mothers heaven. if you dont own these albums and love texas as i do then BUY them! i saw them at the roxy in los angeles in the early 90s-incredible concert, sharleen has such a powerful presence and voice. a beautiful album and still one that i could listen to everyday and not tire of.

5 out of 5 stars Melodies to miraculously cure the moribund!!!.......2005-09-10

This 2000 3-CD set is a new edition of 2-CD set from 1990 titled "Opérette-Passion" from EMI France. By popular request, this adds to the already mirific collection a third CD containing some of the real glories of mid-XXth century French operettas: Maurice Chevalier, Tino Rossi, Fernandel, Alibert, Denise Duval, Luis Mariano, Georges Guétary, Bourvil, Mathé Altéry, Anny Cordy, Gise Mey and Armand Mestral. The selection is not exhaustive - that would be impossible* - but it does give any listener a major incentive to go ferretting for more of the same and the complete score of some of those genuine masterpieces of charm, humour and melody by Fancis Lopez or Maurice Yvain (among many others). For students of the French language and French opera, this collection is priceless as it gives a very good impression of what makes the French singing voice different from any other: something called "le phrasé", which unfortunately cannot be duplicated or improvised by international stars who simply dabble in French (except maybe the multi-talented Petula Clark). The recordings range from a restored antique of the 20's by Chevalier to full stereo scores from the 70's. The result is a package whose value will never be duplicated in discriminating choice, sound quality and sheer listening enjoyment. One very minor reservation : The dates of the recordings are not indicated as they were in the "Opérette-Passion" collection and the names of the lyricists are not given. The liner notes are composed of a 2-page essay which gives a general outlook of the evolution of French operetta (in French) but could have been a little longer, in my humble opinion. Details like this would have made the difference between a wonderful album for connoisseurs and a genuinely educational tool. * The operettas of Vincent Scotto are not represented. WARNING: These recordings are genuine treasures and are never available for long either individually of collectively, so buying this collection is an absolute no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars FROM OFFENBACH TO LOPEZ.......2002-08-16

Yesterday ,before going to sleep, you told your wife:I have nothing against FRENCH operettas, but what i want to hear is the songs ,not the dialogue that goes with the genre when you listen to complete works. Here in that collection, all the composers who created that particular form of light music are represented. It is so much more entertaining than traditional opera.Among the highlights are songs from OFFENBACH's works like LA BELLE HÉLENE and LA PÉRICHOLE;MESSENGER's VERONIQUE and MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE;the famous LA VEUVE JOYEUSE that was successfull around the world;CHRISTINÉ's PHI PHI created the day after armistice in 1918.One of the pleasant surprize for me was hearing songs from LES MOUSQUETAIRES AU COUVENT and one from LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT (JADIS,LES ROIS)and another from CIBOULETTE(NOUS AVONS FAIT UN BEAU VOYAGE).MADY MESPLÉ,one of the best singers of the genre is featured on seven songs, and she is always a joy to hear in any role of the repertoire.FRANCIS LOPEZ, who is remembered as the last important composer is well honoured with eight selections with singers like BOURVIL,GEORGES GUÉTARY and LUIS MARIANO.Don't try to resist THE MERRY WIDOW ,she'll get to you one way or another.

5 out of 5 stars As close to pop perfection as you're likely to hear........2000-03-22

It's strange how life works out. When the first single Say What You Want came out I liked it but bypassed it in favour of Don't Speak by No Doubt which was released at the same time. A couple of months later and the roles had reversed completely. Texas were now a band on the cusp of World changing glory and as for the other group... I can't even remember their name now. But this had less to do with one single and more to do with the band and the album. The bottom line is this: Texas are gods and WOB is their crowning glory.

Breathe deeply as you insert the disc. Sit down quietly as you press play. The album starts slowly, a 34 second mixture of drum, voices and guitar before finally settling into that oh so simple but oh so beautifully recognisable riff. By the time Sharleen's angelic voice has begun you're lost in a sea of beauty that will only end when the absolutely gorgeous Breathless finishes the album.

The brilliance of Texas is their musical simplicity. No Radiohead layering or James like complexity here. The tunes are back-of-mind-naggingly brilliant and it won't take long before you're gleefully singing along without knowing it. That doesn't mean you'll like it instantly. The sometimes obscure (or even stupid) lyrics mean that you must give the songs time to work their magic. it may take time but you know you're hooked when you realise you've rewound Black Eyed Boy or Halo eight times in a row just to hear the intros. Picking highlights is pointless, they're all good. If you forced me I'd pick Breathless as the top track but I'd have to listen to the album 20 times to be sure. And I'd enjoy doing it too :).

As for the extra tracks, well the acoustic version of SWYW is worth its weight in gold, Sorry is a class track that should have been there anyway and the remixes... well they don't hurt but they don't help much either. Remixes rarely add to an albums worth and this is no exception. I'd have rather had Method Man's duet with Sharleen on SWYW than a bossa nova(? ) version of Black Eyed Boy but there we go. If you're a Texas completist like me you don't really have a choice. If you're not get the original. You're not missing a great deal.

JUST GET IT. In anyway shape or form. This CD must be owned by every person on the planet with any interest in music. I can think of only one thing more vital: oxygen. Yes, its that good.

3 out of 5 stars Just one omission.......2001-02-02

There is another recording of "Goodbye" by N.Melba on Victor 95012,released in the US in 1905.I wonder why it is not included in this "complete" Romophone release?

5 out of 5 stars Prima Donna Assoluta.......1999-11-29

Just how much Nellie Melba can one take at one sitting? Judging by this set an awful lot and that is no mean achievement given the unflattering recording, and Melba's maddening habit of recording an aria again and again. Melba's singing lacks charm - judging from contemporary reports the lady could boast little of this anyway. But it has an astonishing technique, a limpid and glorious tone, and at times some indefinable but terribly moving quality. A great, great singer - in fact for my money marginally the best on record.

5 out of 5 stars In a class by herself.......1999-11-23

Melba achieves perfection more often than any other singer (with the exception of Pol Plancon). Her phrases, her high notes, her ritardandi are beyond conventional emotion and beauty. There is something almost otherworldly in her best moments. In the grand Puccini arias, she seems at first too cool, too controlled. But you soon notice her supreme artistry as well as the fire, the sheer physical force just beneath the utterly smooth surface. In fact, she is sometimes more explosive, more dramatic, than the great Callas herself. And she gives so much of herself! In the Boheme arias, her generosity is perhaps most apparent. In marveling at one perfect top note after another, one almost does not realize how cohesive she can make the pieces seem, how architectural and intelligent her approach is.

5 out of 5 stars Only One Melba.......1999-02-12

That was certainly Dame Nellie's assessment of herself, and she must have been something. Yes, both Peach Melba and Melba toast are named after her, and yes, she was worshipped. Even such a curmudgeon as Bernard Shaw could appreciate her greatness. Puccini praised the fact that she sang HIS music, not "Melba-Puccini." So why, then, do her recordings not reveal to us the scope of her artistry? Granted, we can marvel at the technical accomplishments (listen, for example, to the "Hamlet" mad scene, or "Sweet Bird") and occasionally catch a phrase that makes us understand what she was about, but she lacks the grandeur and opulence of Ponselle, or the tender vulnerability of Galli-Curci. It may be that Melba was, after all, an artist of the theatre, and that the cramped, primitive conditions of early recording studios simply did not inspire her to her greatest work. However, for devotees of Golden Age voices, this Romophone set is indispensible. The transfers are masterfully done, so that even those allergic to the acoustic sound of early recordings will not be bothered.
