A good starting point.......2002-04-21

This was the first "acid jazz" CD I ever bought. After recommendations from friends that I would like the genre, this was a good place to start.

What I like about acid jazz, is it's instrumental energy and complexity. So the vocal tracks on this CD didn't do as much for me.

Additionally, I was most impressed by "Exodus Quartet", which underscores the great thing about these compiliations -- they have a lot of artists, so you can sample the sounds that you like.

Light-weight Acid Jazz collection.......2001-08-03

Instinct Records has done a tremendous job in bringing Acid Jazz to the US audience. They have been the defining factor in presenting the genre that is a fusion of Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop and Groove -- the tunes that are all about horn-soaked dancing, be it funky or frantic.

With that said, I have to say of the dozen tunes presented here, none would be on my personal "Best of" list, even though most of the artists would. In fact only about half of the tunes would even fit in the definition of Acid Jazz as set out on the CD cover... the majority being more of an "Adult Contemporary" flavor, that is a bit bland.

The pace of the album as a whole is uneven, but taken individually, there are still some excellent performances here, like "Peace" by Exodus Quartet, "Jazz in the House" by Count Basic, and "Das Land" by No Se.

This is older, mellower stuff.......1998-08-07

This is not as "housey" as recent acid jazz stuff. It is more like light jazz with a modicum of funkiness. Marks a transition point to Acid Jazz, which was more Jazz and less Acid.

A great introduction to the world of Acid Jazz.......1998-07-16

In a genre of music dominated by sales of compilation records, The Best of Acid Jazz is one of those rare records that lives up to its title. For anyone new to the world of Acid Jazz (or unaware of exactly what "Acid Jazz" means), this record provides a pleasant mix of sounds from various elements of the Acid Jazz scene. There is not a bad song to be heard. The tight sounds one should expect from a quality Acid Jazz issue are mixed here with powerfully soulful vocals to create classic sounds throughout this record. If you are exploring Acid Jazz for the first time or simply want to expand your horizons, I cannot recommend better first step than The Best of Acid Jazz.
