A welcome change.......2007-07-08
It's very unfortunate, really, that this double mix album is getting some of these nasty one-star reviews. I can guarantee that if this was released on a different label under a different mix series, this would not be received as poorly as it is by some reviewers. The main problem with this is that it was marketed to the wrong audience. As you can gather by reading these one-star reviews, much of the Global Underground fanbase is too high-set on expectations for typical progressive house fare that this label is usually known for. I like Nick Warren and Danny Howells as much as the next guy, but someone should change things up a bit once in a while! Hernan Cattaneo's latest Sequential release, for example, bored me to tears!
Anyways, I'm not even sure how the hell to classify the first CD, as it's an energetic frenzied mix of electro, breaks, acid, and guitars. If you're familiar with Ed Banger's catalogue, then you'll have a good idea of what Adam Freeland's going for, as SebastiAn, Justice, and DJ Mehdi all make appearances here. From the moment the CD starts, the energy hardly lets up and Freeland flies through some absolutely sick cuts. A few tracks and sequences that stand out especially are "F**k," "Floating," and "Signatune" leading up to the devastating "Sharpen the Knives." Definitely not for the faint of heart.
The second CD, although less intense, is much more varied. The first three tracks are hypnotic and fairly subdued before building up to a track by 120 Days, a band whose sound reminds me of Kasabian if they went a more psychedelic route. From there Freeland goes through some techy minimal into a downright weird track by James Holden before getting back to a more conventional rock sound with Silversun Pickups (!), which took me by surprise. Many of these groups/bands would be more familiar to indie rock fans than progressive heads, but that doesn't mean there's a drop in quality here. Freeland continues this sound until the mix comes to a distorted fuzzed-out close.
Clearly the people who went out and bought this before doing any sort of research (are they familiar at all with Freeland's track record??) or sampling have themselves to blame. I suggest that anyone else who is curious about this release would sample some of these tracks before making a decision. It's not the best GU mix by a long shot, but it's way more fresh and exciting than a lot of releases lately.
freeland rules.......2007-07-07
the diversity and open mindedness of this set is mind boggling. so great to see a dj, after so many years of spinning, still having the passion and balls to search out and find whats exciting in music today. if you want the same old same old, 2 minute mixes, tribal/proggy tracks that go nowhere, and sets that are so predictable they sound like the dj went to the john and never came back, then dont buy this. if you like your music fresh, exciting, mind bending, then this is the thing for you.
Thank goodness something new is coming out of GU.......2007-07-04
In short...it's about time GU shook things up a bit. I stopped buying GU albums because I got incredibly bored by their predictable releases...besides Danny Howells. I love how some of the die hard GU fans are falling apart about this release. They sounds like they are getting old when they call it noise. LOL!
The Worst Global Undreground Album EVER - DO NOT BUY THIS Album.......2007-07-03
I am a loyal charter GU customer for 10 years. I buy everything they publish. I have the entire set of GU albums. This is the first time they have published an album I absolutely HATE. I am wondering if the owners of GU were on vacation and didn't listen to this God Awful pair of CDs before allowing them to be published under the GU umbrella. Not only is it terrible, it's also very short - only two hours instead of the usual 2:30-2:35. But the end can't come soon enough in this case. I mean EVERY SINGLE TRACK SUCKS. I take that back. There are one or two that are TOLERABLE. But I mean do not waste your hard earned currency on this piece of garbage.
I hope to GOD the bosses in New Castle do not invite Adam Freeland back for any more disasters. He has not got the chops at all. This is truly an embarrassment to all who helped make this volume the first ever BAD in a series of 31 (there is no #2). I guess you could say they've gotten it 97% right. But until this album, they had it 100% right. Bummer for Adam to inflict such a horrible audio bruise on such a fine label.
Cacophony, to put it midly.......2007-07-02
This is probably the *worst* GU ever, fraught with disagreeable noise, for the lack of a better word- the kind that will make you wonder if there's something wrong with the album you forked out good money to buy.
Both discs are equally bad, but disc 1 deserves some sort of prize for coming up with those random discombobulated beats. A good example of what lies in store for the rest of the album is track 2 on disc 1. Fire up the sample and see if it's your thing.
Bordering on sickening, this album doesn't even deserve a 1, because that would be giving it 20% of the top score. It seems as though Adam is challenging you to get though his junk in one sitting (while he probably sits back and listens to Nick Warren), which I haven't managed to do yet (I have heard it fully though). If this is the direction EDM is going, it is depressing.

"Nothing but Noise"........People listen to the CD!!!! Its a GREAT Mix .......2007-07-12
Ok I have not written a review in a long time. But I have to let my voice be heard. This cd is truly an amazing mix. No, its not progressive, house, or trance. It Breaks (and a few rock songs thrown in for good messure). Now dont get me wrong, I was thrown off on the first listen. Almost did not give it another chance. But on the second listen I got to really soak up what Freeland has done here and its GREAT. I mean come on people, Who else can have you right in the middle of a pounding breaks mix then all of the sudden throw down a smoking rock song (Lazy Eye)on disc two. Any way I'm not going to go into the specifics of the cd, just trust me GIVE IT A CHANCE
a refreshing departure from GU's excellent progressive pedigree.......2007-07-10
The problem I have with the negative reviews regarding this release is that many of them start off with:
"This is noisy and awful! I've been a fan of GU ever since the series existed and this is nothing like what they play!"
Yea okay. If this was a Seaman release--or Digweed--then sure, be angry. It would be a complete disaster of sound. You got hooked by the expectation of heavily layered, ethereal progressive house and got edgy, punchy electronica. Complain--people will listen.
But if you have been following Adam Freeland around, or electronic music in general for that matter, you'd know that he's not a progressive house DJ. In fact, he isn't even a house DJ. Known for his blistering breaks and genre-defying sets, Adam has slowly progressed (pardon the pun) towards the French and Australian labels (Ed Banger and Modular come to mind), pushing the boundary between house, electronica, and rock.
To me, the combination is sublime. I love every minute of this release (I'll give the other reviewer some slack since the revl9n track IS a bit weird). If you like artists like SebastiAn, Busy P, Digitalism, The Bagraiders, Ajax, and other "new electro" stars, then pick up this album. If you are a diehard fan of groovy, deep progressive house, then this album shouldn't have even attracted you in the first place.
A real dancer in my book.
Two CD's of noise.......2007-07-07
I have to agree with the other reviews that came in at one star. If they had a rating of zero stars these CD's are awful enough to have deserved a zero star rating. If you are into sounds that mostly make you cringe then this is certainly your style. NO need to go on any more, but there's not a single track on these 2 CD's worth listening or dancing to.
Fits in perfect.......2007-07-06
You one star bashers aren't patient. When I first heard this, i was like "what the hell" but.....gave it a chance and im glad i did. Maybe you wouldn't want to hit the random button on this cd- i think thats what the "one star" reviewers did. Superbly mixed, different, and rockin'. If you've given every other GU a chance go ahead and do the same for this.

Customer Reviews:
A "mixed" bag of treats for GU fans.......2007-07-22
GUMixed is a mixed (pardon the pun) bag, no doubt about it.
Following (and inspired by) GU's successful GU10 comes a nicely packaged three disc (or four, depending on whether you buy the limited edition) mix of unreleased/exclusive tracks and an '88-'95 retrospective, which is all well and good and certainly unique, but not without a few caveats.
The first disc begins very, very strongly with `An Evening With Bobi Bros' by Trentmoller & DJ Tom > Tenaglia's Island Groove Remix of `Dibiza' > `Lovin' (Your Body Remix) by Funk D'Void. In fact, the first CD is peppered with a quantity of really decent tracks - some stand-outs include `Shake It' and `Mal Funktion' - but the problem is that equally as many just don't hold water by comparison, leaving mixed impressions at the disc's closure. `SheShi Lounging' and `The Operatah' were a bit too disco-house for my tastes and didn't seem to fit in; the same goes for `Manga' and the downright weird `Razorblade.' Disc one ends as strongly as it began, however, with Bent's `Waiting For You' and UNKLE's `Burn My Shadow' (remixed by Junkie XL). Make no mistake, there really aren't any `bad' tracks on this disc, but a couple of tracks would have been better off omitted.
I can't quite understand where the GU marketing department came up with "Two discs full of exclusive and unreleased music," as disc two's opener `Azure (Part 1)' has appeared on other mixes as well - but so much the better, as it is a decent track. `School Of Thought' brings some nice sexy progressive trance to the table, but is followed by the disappointingly short `Warm Milk,' clocking in at a mere 1:14, and `Female,' which sounds as if it should have been included on the third disc rather than amongst the exclusive tracks. There are plenty of moments of saving grace on disc two, just like disc one, to make up for some mismatched tracks. Stel performs an earthy remix of Trafik's `Indestructible' which expands into a surprisingly hard-hitting number by its end. `Big Booms Bigger Tunes' > `Xcellr8' > `Mexico Can Wait' continue this theme that is abruptly halted by `Winter,' which is haunting and melodic, as is `Saturn.' The problem is, again, that these tracks seem woefully out of place even though they are quite enjoyable. Disc two ultimately redeems itself, as does disc one, with a series of fantastic tracks by Jim Rivers (`Black Box'), Gabriel & Dresden Ft. Jan Burton (`New Path' remixed by Jim Rivers) and Paul Hartnoll (`Patchwork Guilt'). Again, there are no truly harsh tracks present but the inconsistency is paramount.
Which brings us to disc three - the 1988-1995 retrospective of early house/acid-house tracks. I definitely dig this disc because it makes GUMixed a fairly unique and complete package and features songs by long-ago EDM pioneers including Lost Tribe, West Bam, Doi-Oing, Creative Thieves (Sasha performs a remix of their track) and Members Of The House, to name but a few. For a retrospective disc, disc three offers a lot and asks very little in the way of patience with aged tracks.
For the collectors out there who purchase the limited edition with the fourth, unmixed CD, let me be succinct: It is as decent as any of the other discs, but the extra $10 added to the price does not justify its inclusion. I think GU should have followed in the footsteps of GUMixed's predecessor, GU10, and made this a standardized four-disc collection rather than making the unmixed disc optional. It serves its purpose well for those who mix their own music, indeed, but it isn't *that* great.
Overall, GUMixed is a mixed bag of treats with some easily overlooked abrasions in the track sequences. I do think that I like this package better than GU10 because of the exclusivity of many of the tracks plus the retrospective third disc.
Disc 1 - 3.5/5 * Disc 2 - 3.5/5
Disc 3 - 4.0/5 * Disc 4 - 3.0/5
Overall, a strong 3.5, and overall a quality release.

Album Description
The highly anticipated album from this underground cult heavyweight combines the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music with the force and volume of sound system dancehall devastation. "Underground Communication" is an exploration of hip-hop culture, featuring scores of MCs and rhythmic poetics mashed atop a heavy, driving range of tempo and, of course, those signature throbbing bass lines. Rooted in political conviction, philosophical intention, and backed by a rabid fan base, this release sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media, and social activism. Bassnectar is already gaining critical acclaim from tastemakers at URB, Flavorpill, and BPM, and has won the Nitevibe.com, SF Weekly, and SF Bay Guardian award honors for "San Francisco's Best DJ."

This CD is an outlet for the loose coalition of remixers, DJs, and studioheads known as the Asian Underground (because of their Asian or Anglo-Asian backgrounds). They all put a distinctly Indian spin on this music, with the dhol drum at the heart of the beat, and all the technology on top. Singh's two tracks are things of joy, but nothing here disappoints, whether the modern film music of A.R. Rahman or the drum'n'bass of State of Bengal. --Chris Nickson

Talvin Singh is truly the Asian Underground ambassador.......2004-08-04
I'd heard Flight IC408 years ago, never really gave it much attention. Then one day, at my ex's house, I spotted Anokha on her CD rack. I popped it in, and was blown away. Jaan is one of the coolest tracks I've ever heard, I'm still trying to find a set to hook it into(and I'm close). I do agree with one of the other reviewers in that the album has flow problems, and it jumps too much at some points. On the whole, though, I love it. Can't wait to get into more of his stuff. :)
not very happy.......2004-04-15
I bought this CD thinking about the indian-electronic music, and i get disappointed when i heard it, it hasn't the indian essence like other CD's, it's more electronic than anything, and believe me that i'm a fan of talvin singh, karsh kale, cheb i sabbah and more...but anyway it has few cool songs, all are from talvin singh, one from state of bengal "flight IC408" and from Rahman (mumbai theme tune), it's like a bollywood score
Horrible!!.......2003-08-02
I bought this CD because so many good reviews about it were listed, but man!! what a terrible dissapointment. This CD is just plain awfull and I think I have an eclectic music taste. This is TRANCE music, only one track remained in my collection and that was "Chitagong Chill". The rest were trash.
I should have known because I purchased "Ha" before, another Talving Singh CD and only one track was good on that one "Mustard Fields". You really have to be spaced out on acid to get into any of this stuff if you ask me. I made myself a note to NEVER purchase another Talvin Singh CD. I don't know how this got so many good reviews, so I had to cast my vote and try to balance the scales here.
Singh.......2002-10-03
Pretty good CD. Not exactly enough Asian influence for me.
Loved it!.......2002-09-08
As a new fan to the Asian underground, I was very pleased with this album. I was not quite sure what to expect but was pleasantly pleased with the variety of music on this CD. The two songs by Talvin Singh himself were my absolute favorite. I would definitely recommend it!

Released as a tribute to the fact that Coldcut's legendary Ninja Tune imprint had been releasing records for a decade, this collection showcases the label's rich array of artists. Though assembled in the same spirit as the seminal Ninja Cuts series, comprising a mixture of back catalog and material exclusive to the compilation, a crafty alteration of the title acts as a nod to the 10 years since Bogus Order's "Zen Brakes" first fought its way onto a turntable. From the Steinski intro, the track listing of the first of two compact discs has a distinct hip-hop leaning. It slinks through lyrical activity from the likes of the Dynamic Syncopation before flipping a skit from Roots Manuva over Amon Tobin's "Saboteur" and dropping down to the sultry vocals of Sarah Jones, which parallel the Gil Scott-Heron standard in their declaration that the "revolution will not be between these thighs." Flip to the second disc for a demonstration of Ninja's recent foray into cinematic funk, whether through the raging percussion of Chris Bowden or breathtaking orchestration of Clifford Gilberto's "Restless," the resultant experience is nothing if not widescreen. Settle down and reset your ears for two hours of cross-dressing, genre-bending bliss from one of the U.K.'s most innovative record labels. --Kingsley Marshall

If you're going to get your feet wet, you may as well swim........2004-02-29
Lets rate the label not the tracks. The label, as it stands, is on the up and up, introducing the best aritsts that jazz-core and hip hop (REAL HIP HOP, NOT LUDACRIS) have to offer. The problem, is that this compilation only lets you get your feet wet in the ocean that this label has to offer. Tracks by Amon Tobin, Saul Williams, Kid Koala KILL the rest of the cd. I would honestly reccommend this compilation to those who are ready to dive into some deeper music, it's the perfect introduction into the world of electrojazz and tru hip hop heads. Heavy and hard, this one carries. Just know that this compilation is mearly a cliff note in the world of the tunes of the ninja. Ninja tune reprazent.
Xen Superstar.......2003-07-12
Xen Cuts is basically a compilation of music from different musicians from the Big Dada and Ninjatune label. It's a great showcase of all the labels have to offer and is almost like like gourmet dish of different foods to sample before you decide to buy them on your own. The tracks range from trip hop to hard acid jazz (I love Clifford Gilberto's tracks) and some lyrically sound hip hop tracks. With as many musicians as they have, a lot of the tracks are well done. Granted, I would be hard pressed to find all the tracks appealing, the ones that are give birth to a sense of style that each of the musicians have thoroughly developed through the years and deserve the recognition that they get for their respective genres.
The hip hop tracks are nicely done, the Big Dada Sound track is a highlight just because it features some big name (well, relatively speaking) that all collaborate on one track. It's the perfect high-bass track for any bloke rolling out on the town one evening. The acid jazz tracks are spectacular, especially the clifford gilberto. The tracks leave you drenched in saturation, and push you towards the epiphany of "This is *real* acid jazz". The drum n bass tracks are alright, besides Amon Tobin, it's not really a genre that the labels are known for producing, but some of the d n b tracks are enjoyable. Overall, there are some tracks that pale, while others that embody their respective genre in full. But for the price, it's all good.
Must have.......2002-08-16
Live kid Koala cuts! Rare 'Revelution won't happen bwt these thighs' track and many others. Dude, get it. You gotta.
Oustanding, Breathtaking, Spectacular, (adjective please!!!).......2002-02-09
Wow, Wow, Wow. My brother brought his copy of this CD when he came to visit us. I rummaged through his things (sorry), found it, and it was love at first hearing. I had never even heard of Ninja Tunes before then. This 3-disc compilation features a variety of artists and their myriad sounds, all coming together for one large party (for clarifications, see the track listing posted on this website).
Disc One: Mostly hip-hop oriented. Funky, deep beats with better than average raps, sassy feminists, and an oriental flavor (Kid Koala).
Disc Two: Mostly for jazz buffs. The weakest of the set. Highlights: Gilberto,Clifford; Arc; Up, Bustle & Out; Amon Tobin
Disc Three: Overlooked tracks. Most tracks are excellent. Pay special attention to the Saul Williams track (and watch "Slam"), Funki Porcini, Kid Koala (" I wonder what kind of bear his wife thinks he is"), Roots Manuva, and the Zen Cuts bonus track. It's awesome.
Looking forward to another such compilation by Ninja Tunes
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Disappointing to be perfectly honest.......2001-12-05
Yeah i know, (the price) for 3 cds (just under 50 songs) is great, the packaging is real nice and the names performing are top notch.
The problem is that i was expecting something really mindblowing and there where some great touches but overall i wasn't that impressed. Maybe its because i had most of the best songs because i had at least 10 of the artists individual albums.
Cd 1 is strictly for the hip-hop headz. Roots Manuva kills it of on track 2 while the Herbaliser and Latryrx show just why i think they are the most gifted writers in the scene on track 5. Roots Manuva strikes again on Tobins brilliant Saboteur (track 9), and Quannum MC (track 15) is real hot. This is probably the best cd in this collection with Mr Scruff and Kid Koala making decent apperances. Track 7 is my least favourite (by Neotropic?).
Cd 2 is probably the worst cd. Clifford Gilberto saves it from the dustbin with the amazing Restless and the 10th victim.
Funki Porcini and Arc are above par with decent tracks as is Amon Tobin. Dj Food has the worst song on this whole album with 'The Ageing Young Rebel' (tRACK 10).
Cd 3 is decent with Eastflatbush project (Track 11) and my main man Roots Manuva on (track 10). Funki Porcini gets it right again with (track 2), Porcini's 'Ultimately empty million dollars lp' was real poor so this shows he is decent. Finally (track 12) by DJ Food is brilliant. CD3 has many decent but uninspiring songs on aswell as the ones mentioned.
In conclusion, the is a must get purchase for any Ninja Tune fans and since i purchased a cd recorder i have made a one disc compilation which is great, i advise you to do the same.
(...) To be honest when i started this review i gave it 3 stars but it deserves 4.
DJ Krush vs Coldcut, Funkungfusion and DK and DJ Food compilations are also banging but Funkjazztical Tricknology should be avoided. Laters

It will grow on you and you'll be surprised to what extent.......2006-04-19
This is probably one of my all time favorite albums. I think it's easily Moby's most psychedelic work. It epitomizes what I imagine the rave scene was all about (imagine since I wasn't really a participant back in the day). If you listen to it expecting certain things you might be disappointed. It's raw and kind of elemental in its delivery. On it's surface it might seem simplistic. If you listen long enough you realize, however, that each sound is lovingly chosen, each incongruent rhythm expertly rendered to contribute to an otherworldy, trippy feeling. It's the type of techno I'd want to do a Shamanistic dance to (if I were into that sort of thing).
BEST OF MOBY.......2004-12-29
This C.D is quite the surprise coming from Moby! Used to his weird but funky tunes on c.d's like 18 and Play? This Album definitly is quite different from the other. Its more hardcore, it's more jamming and it's more rumble in the bronx. two thumbs up my man, props
Apprentice Moby.......2003-11-16
The music on this album may not be as complex or as polished as that on 'Moby' but it's a rich seam of early techno-period Moby tracks that you probably haven't heard before. My favourite tracks are Besame and UHF 4 mainly because they have the piano riffs (or whetever they're called) in them. A lot of the tracks could be seen as prequels the tracks on 'Moby' (Go Original Mix is an interesting listen) and Moby's learning curve can be heard when comparing these tracks to the ones on 'Moby'. The bottom line is, if you liked 'Moby' you'll like this.
Excellent.......2003-02-03
I don't see how people can not like this CD. I mean, obviously, you probably don't want to start with this if you've just bought Play or 18 and now you want to venture into Moby's past - if that's what you want, I reccomend you look at Everything Is Wrong. But a prequel to Play this ain't.
What it IS, however, is a bunch of GREAT songs (except for Drug Fits the Face, which is jarring in its irritance), including the original Go (which everyone seems to hate except me), UHF3 (which features great early 90's piano); Voodoo Child, one of my favorite Moby songs of all time, as well as other quirks like Move the Colors, great album opener Besame, Rock the House, and Party Time. M-Four, the last track, is a great album ender. Highly recommended.

Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives's 16 tracks can be listened to as one 50-minute piece of experimental ambient hip-hop. Even the album's more disruptive elements are somehow seamlessly integrated into the overall sense of groovy calm and funky forward motion. Atlanta-based producer Scott Herren uses a richly varied palette to create Vocal Studies' warm, subtle sound collages. Sliced-and-diced rap and vocal performances play a key role on a number of these sonic constructions. "Blacklist," featuring MF Doom and Aesop Rock, is an exception. Herren doesn't mess with the MCs' raps and the relatively straight-up track nicely contrasts with the CD's hip-hop abstractions. The producer does subtly manipulate the mellow vocals of Sam Prekop (Sea and Cake) on the lovely "Last Light." Listening to this flute-and-strings-laced R&B piece, it's easy to imagine sunbeams gently slicing through cloud formations. Vocal Studies can make you feel like you're dreaming and dancing at the same time. --Fred Cisterna

Caught on Late .......2007-03-23
It's hard to believe I am now listening to this album in 2007 for the first time. This is an album that has completely gone under the radar and I regret not having heard this earlier.
Great subtle beats cut perfectly that while it may seem unaccessable at first will all make sense by the second listen through. Need to listen alone uninterupted for all 50 minutes to get the full effect.
Great album, dare I say brilliant, possibly??? Best album I've heard in the past few months. Hands down.
Art you can dance at.......2006-01-25
this record is just plain art and reaches beyond music, it seems as if it was exploring and commenting in urban culture
whether your thing is hip-hpo, idm, dance, whatever it is, just get this record,
inspiring indeed
david
Stellar.......2005-07-02
This is the best breakbeat disc I have ever heard. To hear Scott Herren's music is to hear DJing as no one else does it. The breaks are fast, skitterish, and dynamic, constantly reinventing themselves before you can quite grasp what you've just heard. Somehow, through it all, the mixing is really smooth. That's not to say you could dance to it. Well, perhaps you could dance to it if you were having a siezure, but otherwise, it won't happen. The disc is beat heavy, with just a few vocal tracks with guests MF Doom and Aesop Rock.
I hate to gush like this, but I sincerely think this disc is one of the best I've heard in the genre, and I'd hate not to do it justice.
Hidden.......2004-07-26
Excellent Album from this Atlanta based Hip-Hop Crew. Almost 5 STARS!! Nice breaks, not overly produced. If you're into Dan the Automater, Kid Koala, and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien you'll get into this real well too. Buy the LP and the CD together. Money well spent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
knocked out and put in the van.......2004-07-14
it all started while taking my son to the local record exchange to look at used gamecube games and I heard a curious beat with a groove that I couldn't place?
I kept listening as we looked and it sounded like the radio was in between stations (radio, television, and shortwave?)!
I couldn't help but keep listening..... it was hip hop... rap.. samples..... commercials..metal guitar.....D&B... groove .... dub w/ a twist of dance hall?
on the way out I was so worked up I had to ask the counter guy
"WHo is That!!!???
Prefuse 73 vocal studies and uprock.
...... "what???"
he said it again.
Now.... I'm 40 yr old black REPUBLICAN that remembers the begining of hip hop and knew it wasn't a fad in 1977.
Prefuse 73 is Glitch Hop and has to be the one night stand of Kraftwerk ,Art of Noise, yellow magic orchastra, and some of blackest most militant straight out of brooklyn public enemy with a pinch of KRS1 hip hop
Those homeless guys you see argueing and apologizing to themselves?.......... this is want their listening to!

Derivative and original, familiar and surprising...at the same time.......2006-09-18
Wow, what a great album. 12 songs of often strange familiarity. Whether it's playing with simple generic rhythms (is one even based on a hymn?!)...before breaking into their trademark complexity, or resurrecting familiar sounds from earlier more bass-n-drum albums but twisted and reformed into something new and vital. All with their trademark dark vitriolic take on life. Lyrically it's pure poetry, of the type you won't be reading in school any time soon. A masterful album and THE release of the year for anyone who cares about genuine creativity in music. NMN are truly one of a kind. Let's hope it's not the last album!
The band are touring as we speak - go check em out, they're about the finest rock band you can hope to see live too and still have more energy on stage than a thousand Green Days or Offsprings combined.
never cease to amaze.......2006-09-02
There are some things that need to just die but NOmeansno is not one of them, these fricken brothers have been rockin my world since I was 11 years old and Im 32 now so yes I am a little bias that Rob, John and even Tom rule the land while strategically based in Canada overseeing the filth that pours across there borders. Well Ausfaht is keen and even more cunning then some of there prior, some sounds familiar some sounds new but from the first listen I could tell they put there old tickers into it and it shines and blends nicely. Dont die guys! I wanna see another live show featuring some new hits. Hell! this could go top 40 in Oregon! This review is subject to change without notice.
