5 out of 5 stars Big Fan Review.......2007-05-30

Up front, I have to state that I am a fan of John Corigliano and of the Corigliano String Quartet. I've listened to this recording a number of times since i got it, and it never fails to reward listening. Each time I find more nuances and associations, and I remain very impressed with both the quality of the recording and of the playing. This is the kind of music that gives contemporary 'classical' music a good name: it is clearly modern, yet deeply informed by a thorough knowledge of classical traditions (listen for resonances of Beethoven's Grosse Fugue in the Fugue movement of the String Quartet) and the world we live in, and it is music that is full of emotion and intelligence, expressed in a truly contemporary idiom. Wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars Not good........2007-03-04

The swear words aren't the bad part. Its the music and especially the vocals. Blink 182 was a new punk band though. They just had no experience. Well, look at 'em now! Awesome! Why did they have to break up? I reccommend any Green Day, Weezer, BoDeans, and any other blink except maybe ":cheshire cat" and "Flyswatter"

2 out of 5 stars Their early stuff. Not that good........2006-12-29

Blink 182 is by all means a great band, but their early work such as Buddha, isn't that great. It seems more like random themed songs without any passion than the hard rocking tunes they have made in albums like Enema of the State.

4 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-12-18

Before I get into the review, I've got something to say. To the second guy below me: This was made before cheshire cat and after flyswatter. Flyswatter and Buddha are two completely different things. Flyswatter had 8 songs, and was recorded on a tape deck. Then there were other demos and promos made between the two that not too many people can explain.

Now, to the review:

Is it the sex pistols? no. ramones? no. dead kennedys? no. But is it punk: Yes. Ever heard of the descendents? They rocked, and were possibly one of the most influential punk bands ever. If I had to compare this album to someone, it would be the descendents. While this album may, at some points, seem to venture into pop-punk, it's some of the best pop-punk yet.

Sure, the recording quality sucks, but that just adds to the awesome feel of this album. The band occassionaly messes up vocally and instrumentally, which makes the album feel very natural. Plus, blink had their own identity at this point, so they weren't exactly like every punk band out there. The songs move along at an awesome pace, with very little space between each track.

However, the album could have been a bit more agressive. It seemed like their singing was kinda held back at some points. Some songs could've gone faster, too. But, all in all, it's a good punk album.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-09

George Duke is an amazing artist. I'm never disappointed with his music.

5 out of 5 stars music lover.......2006-08-01

I heard "No Rhyme No Reason" on the radio years ago and never caught the name of the artist. Years later I finally caught up with the name of the artist to match the song and have been a fan ever since. "No Rhyme No Reason" till this day still remains one of my favorite songs for George Duke!

5 out of 5 stars All time Classic!.......2006-05-12

This is a really great album! I am 25 years old and I bought this album when it first came out for the hit "No Rhyme, No Reason" ('92). I still enjoy the ENTIRE album till this day! The songs are very relaxing and mellow with infusions of rhythmically upbeat, urban, bop-your-head tunes which all flow together creating the all time classic jazz album. Purchase it today, you won't regrete it!

5 out of 5 stars The Return of the 'Hallowed" DUKEY STICK!.......2006-04-27

All the previous reviews made particular mention of "No Rhyme, No Reason". I couldn't agree more... that song reaches into your soul and pulls out every memory of loves desired, loves lost, and loves we might want to try to regain BUT know we cannot! THAT is a great SONG you always remember. However, being a keyboard hobbiest and remembering Duke's induction to the P-Funk mob with "Reach For it" and "Dukey Stick"; I must say that my favorite song on this CD is "Fame"! George's use of several guest vocalists, the piano, organ and BASS synthesizer (in particular) are absolutely incredible. And there's nothing better than 'live' horns to raise the roof even higher (a combination of Everett Harp, the infamous Seawind horn section AND Earth Wind & Fire's Reginald Young). I also favor "Speak Low" because of Duke's extraordinary use of the Lyle Mays Korg M1
'breathy flute' sound. He uses this synth sound even MORE effectively on "500 Miles to Go" on the Illusions CD. I like Duke's mellow ballads, but I LOVE the FUNK. "Snapshot" is definitely essential. "Illusions" is the sequel...

4 out of 5 stars a timeless classic.......2006-02-23

This album brings you into a different world of contemporary jazz, it also has an eighties feel branded on it. However I feel as though it is a timeless classic.

Thanks

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mellow Rock or Country without the Twang?.......2006-11-15

Most known as his part of bass player for Deep Purple, Roger Glover has a long history of solo projects and appearances on albums he has produced, as well as playing in Rainbow for a few albums and his part in Episode Six where he played with Ian Gillan before joining Deep Purple. Being a fan of those bands and having heard another solo album of his a long time ago, I decided to check this album out.

Though I have no reserves about saying this album is musically brilliant, I found myself thinking that I might appreciate this album more in fifteen or twenty years. One thought that came to my mind is that this is "old guys' rock." That's not really fair because at times I was reminded of Genesis and similar non-pop music of the early and mid-eighties. I was also reminded of country western bands on many occasions and thought that if vocalist Randall Bramblett sang with a twang this album would be a country western album. The album never rocks like Purple but then again I am sure Glover figured if he wanted to rock he would write a song for DP and not his solo work. The lyrics are rather retrospective on life in a few songs and pass on the wisdom of the older generation, something the younger could learn from but probably wouldn't understand or have interest in.

If you are interested in a blend of excellent musicianship with meaningful song writing and rock that is gentle at times, kind to the ears, and swings and grooves without knocking over the table then this album is worth checking out. As for me, I can appreciate it, but nothing really stood out and shook me up after the first couple of spins on the CD player. After a few more times I am sure I will be able to pick out a couple of favourites for those late nights (or early mornings) when I don't need to be bouncing off the walls.

3 out of 5 stars Beyond Deep Purple.......2004-10-23

Not what you would expect from a previous memeber of Deep Purple. Lots of influences from Country and Western and Gospel and even a little back woods Folk. Very mellow and yet also at times having a foot tapping tempo, you will like this if you are a fan of Dylan, Ryan Adams, Tom Petty or Wilco. At times the vocals even sound a little like Chris Rea.
If you like the new fusion of Country and Western with smooth rock then you will enjoy this CD

4 out of 5 stars Roger has a great technical bass playing.......2004-01-07

I love Roger's great hard rock bass playing in Deep Purple! he does not sing superbly not like Glenn Hughes (another bass player of deep purple), but technically Roger is an excellent bassist & much better than Paul Mc cartney. The album features Randall Bramblett on the most voices and Roger's daughter Gillian Glover.
if u re a big Deep purple fan like me, you must love Roger's latest album. The album sounds a bit soul-rock, country Folkrock and some beautiful ballads like queen of england, Beyong Emily. Roger himself sings one track "burn me up slowly". In fact, Roger Glover supports the world's premier heavy rock heroes Deep Purple since 1968. He is a very excellent bass player along with his replacement within Deep purple later in 1973 Glenn Hughes or his contemporary John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.
this cd is a very good one,....a must for all deep purple fans around the globe! cheers need I say more? Jonas

4 out of 5 stars A good album (but not Purple).......2003-07-27

If you're thinking of buying this album because you're a Deep Purple or Rainbow fan - you're in for a surprise. It's a fine album on its own filled with interesting, catchy songs, but it is NOT a hard rockin album. It has an almost folk-rock feel. I was quite surprised at the depth and range of the songs. And Roger Glover sings one of them, and he sounds great! Enjoy this on its own but don't compare it to his work with Rainbow and Deep Purple or you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Well Rounded Album, Well Worth a Listen.......2003-06-20

I was unsure if I should buy "Snapshot." From all appearances, it hardly seemed hard rocking. It's not. What it is is a collection of well-written, well-played songs. What else should I have expected from the bassist of one of the best rock bands ever?

The first song, "My Turn," is quite catchy and I was instantly enthralled with Randall Bramblett's voice. Present on most of the songs, he brings a subtle charm to the songs. I was pleasantly surprised by "Burn Me Up Slowly," as Glover himself sang lead. This is unusual, as Glover is not known to have a spectacular voice. Though he does not have a striking voice, it fit in with the nature of the song. In contrast, his daughter, on "The Bargain Basement," has a wonderful voice.

I've listened to this cd quite a few times and have come to really like quite a few. However, the best song, in my opinion, is "Queen of England." A folksy song with a catchy beat, I've easily listened to this song the most on the cd.

4 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up To His Debut.......2006-05-29

"I've heard a lot of people sing, but this guy can SING"
    - unsolicited & overheard - a large security guy - The Viper Room (Los Angeles)

Singer-songwriter Tyrone Wells masterfully blends pop, soul, and rock infusing each song with energy and passion. Listening to Tyrone with your eyes closed, you'd think you were listening to a legendary soul-singer, which is in stark contrast to the tall, skinny white boy you see on the cover of his album, Snapshot. Not to mention his name is Tyrone.

Tyrone's emotion and charisma have captivated audiences throughout Los Angeles and The Orange County in venues such as the House of Blues (LA and Anaheim), The Galaxy Theater, and The El-Rey. Tyrone's independent movement continues to win avid supporters, having sold over 20,000 of his self-distributed records through live performances.

The California native Wells, won the 2004 Orange County Music Awards Best Male Artist, as well as the 2004 UCLA Spring Sing Best Overall & Best Solo Artist awards. Also in 2004, Tyrone had 8 TV placements in "One Tree Hill" (WB), "Rescue Me" (F/X), "North Shore" (FOX), and "The Mountain" (WB).

Tyrone Wells has a classic and powerful voice that can fill a thousand seat capacity room while singing A Cappella, which is demonstrated in his powerful set closer "When All is Said and Done." Wells' cool-headed stage presence seems to radiate with his love for people and his longtime passion for "music that matters." To quote Tyrone, "Music is the mistress and sometimes obsession that keeps me up at night, pleading for some beautiful resolution."

Along with his current album Snapshot, Tyrone has released Close: Live at McClain's. Wanting his frequent listeners to be involved in the live recording, Tyrone picked McClains, a coffeehouse where he has played weekly to packed houses, for 3 years. Several of the tracks on the live album give listeners a preview of songs that will appear on the next studio album. A DVD of the live performance is also in production for a 2005 release.

Snapshot and Close: Live at McClain's are available in stores via Harvest Media Distribution, or online at www.cdbaby.com/tyronewells.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2005-11-19

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this album. Listening to Tyrone is like therapy. His voice is filled with soul. My mom once said, "If Tyrone were on American Idol, He'd WIN!" I don't know if that helps, but it certainly is a good way of putting it. I just can't wait for his NEW Album that comes out in January!

5 out of 5 stars Music for everyone.......2005-09-09

Tyrone Wells has played at my school a few times, and each time he performs, both guys and girls alike are excited to see him. His tunes are reminiscent of Jack Johnson or John Mayer, with smooth vocals and easy-going guitar in the background. "Sea Breeze" is a definite favorite.

The clean-toned soloing on Savannah Woman is some of his best, absolutely burning, and should shut up all the people like Lee Ritenour who think they are true jazzers because mommy and daddy bought them some lessons. The rest of the material is all top-notch, too. I listen to this one a LOT.

yes he replaced Blackmore on deep purple in 75, by recording the come taste the band album. The result was brain melting he could replace Ritchie in deep Purple. This one was his unreleased solo materials, and this guy was a young wonder! he could play guitar!

    4 out of 5 stars A very worthwhile 'Snapshot'.......2001-02-04

Having been the owner of Tommy Bolin's `Teaser' and `Private Eyes' albums for over twenty years, I was unaware until recently, of the vast repertoire of other material, much of which was previously unreleased. Snapshot represents a most convincing selection and, for those who no nothing of Bolin, an informative first step.

This album presents hard rock, Jazz, funk, blues and reggae all driven by Bolin's inimitable guitar style. It is a collection which has something for everyone. While the recordings lack the audio quality achievable through modern digital techniques, this aspect adds to the attraction of the pieces. It gives an earthy sense to the sounds and a feeling of being there in the recording studio. It is an album that should be listened to rather than just heard.

It is difficult to pick out the best tracks as they are all gems. The easy rhythm of `Standing in the rain', `Oh Carol' and `Summer Breezes' supported by Bolin's vocals and acoustic rhythm guitar present a vastly different offering to that of `Savannah Woman' and `Cucumber Jam' which are strong on electric guitar solos. A worthwhile purchase.

    1 out of 5 stars Beware.......2007-07-10

The band is difficult to work with in person. They accused me of trying to get them at a charity rate for a non-charity event. When I approached them on the topic they lied to me and threatened to sue for slander or libel.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly standard bluegrass fare, well-arranged vocals, good-natured humor, and instrumental prowess .......2005-11-25

Playing Time - 53:36 -- Minnesota bluegrass band Monroe Crossing includes a number of classic Bill Monroe songs in their repertoire. While they primarily focus on traditional offerings, they also branch out onto some backroads of bluegrass along their road trip with some numbers like Bob Dylan's "Nashville Skyline Rag" and one original song. With a goal to play all the cities and towns in Minnesota, Monroe Crossing took their entertaining and energetic show on the road and recorded their fourth album in as many years between November, 2003 and May, 2004 in towns like Barrett, Lake Benton, Lakeville, and Red Wing.

This hard-working band includes Lisa Fuglie (fiddle, mandolin), Art Blackburn (guitar), Graham Sones (banjo), Matt Thompson (mandolin, fiddle) and Mark Anderson (bass). Fuglie and Blackburn handle lead vocals. Matt Thompson is the third voice on all trios. Mark Anderson usually only sings bass on gospel quartets. Sones provides "weather effects" on "In the Pines." This album fully conveys the Monroe Crossing spirit and cohesion. A regional band stands to gain much from a standout live album such as this one. With a little emcee work and some applause thrown in for good measure, we can experience these special moments with them on the road. Their audiences appear to truly enjoy their standard bluegrass fare, well-arranged vocals, good-natured humor, and especially their instrumental prowess.

As part of an Americana Concert, "Wayfaring Stranger" and one original waltz, Art Blackburn's "Friendship's Road," are presented in collaboration with the White Bear Area Choral Association's Heritage Singers. The latter was arranged by Lisa Fuglie for chorus, and the refrain of "sweet is the journey on friendship's road" would have been an optimistic message with which to close this project. Instead, we're treated to the rollicking "Orange Blossom Special" which, when well played, never fails to thoroughly excite an audience. Monroe Crossing's exhilarating arrangement features fiddle, mandolin, banjo, lyrics, and a twin-fiddle finale.

A Monroe Crossing set is characterized by traditional standards, originals, instrumentals, and gospel numbers. They might want to take a few more risks, play further afield from Minnesota, and incorporate even more new or obscure material into their repertoire. On the other hand, their thrilling sound and stage presence are based on a successful tried-and-true formula that exuberantly builds pleasing relationships and rapport with their bluegrass-loving audiences. This should have been a huge pop radio hit for Ru, but of course, it wasn't - great song/hook, amazing camp/hot video, and THE coolest electr-tech-house remix by VISSION & LORIMOR - if you don't dance to this remix, you don't have a pulse.

What happens when you take one of the best dance songs ever and mix it 5 times? You get the best cd single in history. That is what happened with Snapshot. This was the first RuPaul cd that I bought and I was NOT dissapointed. I am always looking for awesome dance tunes and a friend recommended this one. I am now recommending it to you. If you have this cd in, you won't be able to sit down. It is a non-stop mini dance party. Get up, and show what you've got!!!
