this is the 21st century asian dub!.......2004-01-12
If you like the musical smorgesboard of the sound and production of these multi-ethnic, pop-political rants, then pick up Transglobal Underground's "Yes Boss, Food Corner." BOTH groups, in my mind, are the BEST in driving, chanting, strangely harmonic and stunningly unique modern eastern world music!!!
Bidrohi-Sound-Clash Brilliance!.......2003-02-08
Before the misnomer of Asian Underground was ever quoted, there were a handful of truly politically conscious musical rebels of the South Asian diaspora. ADF (and possibly early Fun-da-mental) truly defined and perfected this genre and this album proves it. "Rafi's Revenge" is actually a re-energized and re-recorded version of the French only release "R.A.F.I." from the year before. Where "R.A.F.I" was an excellent album, "Rafi's Revenge" achieved perfection. Musically, "Rafi's Revenge" is heaviest on the ragga jungle/drum and bass side with healthy doses of organic samples (thanks to Sun-J and Pandit G), seering guitar statements (via Chandrasonic), and pulsing yet melodic dub bass lines (from Dr. Das). The young Deeder's unmatchable mc'ing, rapping, toasting, and chanting takes their music to an even higher level of musical depth. If this was all that ADF had to offer they would still be superb, but their lyrics leap ADF into dimensions rarely attained. Listen to Naxalite, Assassin, and Free Satpal Ram. If you don't understand the South Asian diaspora's past and present, you'll soon get your enlightment and realize that all of these themes and messages are indeed global and universal. ADF proved the best way to change the world is to change the way we listen to music...that is, make sure the music is as radical as the lyrics, never compromise on your spirit of experimentation, always push musical boundaries, but most importantly, produce some of the most incredible music that anyone has ever heard regardless of musical genre. Asian Dub Foundation...Zindabad!!!
Miracle of Modern Creation (clever, eh? eh?).......2001-03-27
For whatever reason, I really liked punk when I bought this CD. Now, I've gotten sick of most of my punk CDs, but I still like ADF. In fact, I listened to it this morning. They've got nice funky beats, catchy choruses, and addictive riffs. Some songs worth checking out are Buzzing, Free Satpal RAM, and most of the other stuff on there. I can describe them most accurately as "funky," i believe. They sound kind of like Junkie XL if he used samples from ethnic Indian music. Definitely an album worth buying.
I'll give it the benefit of the doubt..........2000-04-23
I wouldn't really give this 4 stars, more like 3.5 stars. It's a really good album, don't get me wrong. ADF aren't hailed as one of the two founders of the Asian Underground movement for nothing. But after the first few times leaping to it, it kind of gets dull. It's all very trippy and hip-hoppy, but it takes you nowhere compared to the transcendental grooves of Talvin Singh. The socially-loaded lyrics are nice and whoever that is singing can really belt it out. Don't hesitate in buying this CD, but at the same time don't think this is all there is to Asian Underground. ADF started it off well, but they just aren't holding up to what they started.

Combining hypercharged political rants with heavyweight breakbeats and wondrous Indian instrumentation, Asian Dub Foundation are socially aware commentators who simply defy categorization. Taking a cue from maverick groups like Public Enemy and Rage Against the Machine, they match jackhammer rhythms and furious rapping on "Dub Mentality," while "Buzzin'" employs elements as disparate as sitars, dub bass lines, and indie-rock-guitar distortion. Rafi's Revenge landed the coveted Mercury Music Prize in the U.K. for being one of the best releases of 1998. It's a fitting honor. --Aidin Vaziri

a glimpse of things to come.......1999-12-27
'Rafi's Revenege' is a powerful statement, both musically and culturally. Musically, it is hard not to compare the young Brixton lads to the US's Rage Against the Machine- political rant/rap with squealing guitars and pounding beats. But really that's where the similarities end. ADF combines several flavour to the mix- rap, ragga, jungle and even a touch of bollywood, sometimes unsuccessfully. Agenda wise, ADF succeeds where RATM failed- there is a consistent political focus to ther writing- the acceptance and accreditation of South Asian and Afro Carribean youth in the United Kingdom. This is the focus of the album, and it never strays from its mission. The band however loses its intensity in the middle of the album- after pummeling through the first four tracks, the album mellows out to a blunted ragga beat, only to return to fired intensity with 'Operation Eagle Eye.' This band was built on the hyper dynamics of Das's rapping with the rubberband interaction of drum and bass with guitar pyrotechnics, and they chose to omit it for a 1/3 of the record. To really get a feel for this fabulous group, locate their live album, 'Concious Party'- it indeed captures their frantic energy and true colours. Look for good things in the future for ADF!
RAFI'S REVENGE IS THE ULTIMATE CELINE DIONNE ANTIDOTE.......1999-11-22
Rafi's Revenge is an underground cult classic here in Durban (South Africa) and it's not hard to see why. It mixes up ragga, drum'n'bass, rock, hiphop and Asian folk music into an original, massively energetic, ultra funky and utterly captivating record. And of course the progressive, conscious lyrics make this an album that's as valuable socially as it is musically.
If you've ever listend bands and artists like Rage Against the Machine, LKJ, Groove Rider, Roni Size, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Fun
mental etc, etc this album will probably be like a shot of adrenalin straight to your jugular.
It's garunteed to put fire in your eyes, iron in your soul and a whole lot of groove in your hips. What more could you want from an album?
Rafi's RAGE!!!.......1999-08-28
This album is exellent from start to end! Sometimes it is groovy, and sometimes in shakes with rage. The lead singer/rapper sounds a bit like Zack de la rocha of Rage against The Machine, his rap spit political fire! The 5 East Indian members are musical wizards that create innovative beats. With political lyrics that make you wanna get involved and beats that make ya wanna bop your head, especially on songs like "dub mentaliy". This is somethin that will catch your musical ear sooner or later!!!!!
ADF: A band to keep an eye on........1999-08-14
The sound is a cross between Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine and Jamaican Rankin'. But you know what? It works. Solid bass and drum in the back. Great sound engineering. The music is well architectured with driving lyrics.
Some HighLights: Naxalite: Fast & furious. Culture Move: Excellent Baseline.
These guys are on a mission to blend Indo-Asian sounds with Afro-Jamaican beats and from the sounds of this album, I think they are on their way...
Finally a band that does not talk about crap.......1999-08-09
With all the bullsh** music out there today, there are only a handful of Good socially conscience bands, one of them is rage against the machine and the other is the one and only Asian Dub Foundation. This is not just a rant against the system, its DAMN good music! ADF do not play to the mainstream, if you are into jungle, drum n' bass, techno, reggae, hip-hop you will definately dig this album. This album has a great message that needs to be heard. Stop listening to Master P and his No-Talent soldiers and get down with Master D and ADF!
