Obsidian Butterfly by Alice Gomez.......2000-07-18
Alice Gomez and the other members of this trio have produced an album of beautiful instrumental music. Although the cover touts the celebration of ancient instruments, the combination of clay pipes and synthesizers is a bit odd--as if the past and present collided.
Overall, this CD is relaxing and enjoyable but certainly not traditional Native American music.

I liked the Original Better ..........2002-04-16
Personal prejudices aside, I loved the original Obsidian on the Igizeh disk. It fit well into the greater context of the disk, gaining from the other numbers as well as enhancing them. I don't like the radio edit as well as the full version. And, if I'm not going to dance ... well, the remixes don't do a lot for me in this collection.
If you enjoy comparing remixes, or if you're simply a die-hard Banco de Gaia fan and have to have =EVERYTHING= then get this disk. Otherwise, you may want to save up a few more bucks and get the Igizeh disk itself.
(If you'd like to dialogue further about this disk or review, click on the "about me" link above and drop me an email. Thanks!)

One of the most exciting and rewarding of modern composers........2004-05-04
Those words are certainly applicable to "Rappaccini's Daughter," which was premiered in 1988. Like "Florencia," this earlier opera has a Spanish libretto, but while "Florencia" is based upon the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, "Rappaccini's Daughter" is based upon Octavio Paz, the Mexican poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990.
The plot is a moving story of doomed love--the usual opera fare. But it is served well by an excellent libretto and, more importantly, Catan's extraordinary music. In his liner notes, the composer cites as influences everyone from Monteverdi to Berg, and the music here sometimes resembles a mixture of Debussy and Bellini, as Catan merges some neo-impressionist harmonies with the sort of long, arched melodies that make Bellini's music so moving. Catan is, however, wholly original in how he uses his influences, and "Rappaccini's Daughter" is a magnificent, entirely worthy addition to the international opera repertory.
Those who think contemporary classical music means dissonance and abstraction will find in this opera all the qualities that make the works of Puccini and Mozart beloved, but in a modern, non-derivative idiom. Any music this melodic deserves a listen.

Obsidian Torment
Uvall Manufacturer: Blackmetal .com ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000Q470EO |
Product Description
ABMU (American Black Metal Underground) full-length debut album from UVALL (previous split-cd with BARESARK was sold out a couple of years ago); cult Nordic-influenced darkness. Raw production (but not 'primitive'), skillfully grim necro-ish attack, with strong sharp edges of old-school Heavy Metal brutality in the vein of similar Underground bands found on Northern Heritage (CLANDESTINE BLAZE), Bestial Burst (BLOODHAMMER/INCRIMINATED), Breath of Night (JUDAS ISCARIOT, KRIEG), Regimental Records (HELLKULT, NACHTMYSTIUM), Asgard Musik (NUCLEAR WINTER, STRIBORG), etc. Highly reminiscent of DARKTHRONE's "Under A Funeral Moon" True Black Metal classic album! Ten (10) songs; 53 minutes of distinctive orthodox Black Metal that stands apart from, and above the rest of the 'bedroom' USBM scene! This new UVALL CD ("Pro" manufactured; not "cdr") on Antinomian Records is released in cooperation with god is Myth Records (whose previous releases include albums by Polish HELLVETO, Sweden's DAMNATION, SAPFHIER, etc.) in 2005. In the near-future, this "Obsidian Torment" CD by UVALL will surely prove to be essential for diehard Black Metal'ers...

Fargo, ND death/industrial metal.......2001-12-14
Obsidian "Human Distortion" Black Rock Records.......2001-06-03
Produced by Barking Dog Records co-owner Mike Coates (surprise!), the disc has an intensely professional sound that brings through their unique blend of music. The three-piece has taken what Ministry/Nine Inch Nails accomplished with electronics and brought it to a new level by playing without a live drummer - all beats are electronically programmed. Members Barney Haugen (guitar/programming) Tony Haugen (vocals) and John Frampus (bass) have taken a step in the local scene not yet touched on.
The opening track, “Hate,” shows the industrial vision attempted on the disc in full force. Vocalist Tony Haugen’s Robb Flynn/Machine Head vocals share a brash space within the music world. Projecting anger, frustration and an over-the-top angst, this disc will keep Obsidian off the Britney Spears tour, but also bring them the insanely devoted masses of Nu Metal fans that clamor to shows as if it were a religion.
Undoubtedly, the first single will be track five on the album, “F**k it Up.” One of the most memorable tracks, the band’s suggested national anthem puts them in the position of being a censorship target. And yet not ones to waiver, the track and its lyrics are out in full force, Obsidian style. It’s almost impossible to hear the track without that inner anger rearing its ugly head.
Every metal fan knows of the dreaded “metal ballad,” that five-minute epic when the band gets to reveal their sensitive side. While Obsidian does indeed utilize both clean and electric mediums to accomplish their dynamic sound, the ballad is a no-show with the exception of the ending track, “Blue,” a two-minute instrumental that showcases guitarist Barney Haugen’s guitar abilities. With a hand in the production of the album as well, Haugen wears his influences like badges. Riff heavy and non-stop, Obsidian has stepped up to join fellow local metal heads Sons of Poseidon, Undone and Harm’s Way on their mission of world domination, or maybe just Fargo domination.
