It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Melding the contemporary and the classic in ways only he can, Michael Buble has created his most complete studio effort yet. Ranging from "I've Got The World On a String" to "Me and Mrs. Jones," in addition to two new songs co-written by Michael, Call Me Irresponsible makes this album irresistible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buble is still on a roll.......2007-07-23

Michael Buble still fills the musical niche left by Sinatra's passing. The big band is top-notch and Michael, despite his youth, swings big time on these solid standards. Another good addition to your Buble collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-23

Michael Buble is awesome and so is his latest CD. It is defintly one of his best. Such a variety of songs on it and he sings each one fantasically. I 100% recommend buying this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Spotty.......2007-07-21

This is my first Michael Buble CD. I find that I really like his coverage of jazz standards, but mostly his forays into other genres like "You Look Beautiful Tonight" leave me flat. Gorgeous voice, though!

4 out of 5 stars Buble Swinging and Singing Softly - A VERY Good Effort.......2007-07-19

The follow-up to Buble's last effort, the terrific CD/DVD, which featured his wonderful self-penned song, "Home," may not have some of the energy and verve of that set (and that incredible concert), but this is STILL a fine collection of songs, with several standouts: "Everything," another of Buble's own compositions is upbeat, fun, and swinging (even if some of the lyrics are a bit weak); "I've Got the World on a String," which features members of the band calling out his name, is another winner, and beautifully arranged; "Wonderful Tonight," works perfectly as a Latin tinged duet, which will remind some of Sinatra's work with Antonio Carlos Jobim; and "Dream," which concludes the CD, might be something you'll hear on a late night jazz station and LOVE. The CD is somewhat uneven - I'm not sure we need another version of "Always on My Mind," but it's still well done. "Lost," another Buble composition, doesn't really build well as a song, and "That's Life" doesn't work nearly as well as the great Sinatra original. BUT - there's no doubt this man is a talented singer, who can clearly sing in a variety of styles (if you've seen him in concert, imitating Michael Jackson and others, you'll know he's capable of continued excellence in his singing, phrasing, and song selection). I'd love to hear him do a version of "Alfie," for instance, to sing more of his own upbeat compositions, and collaborate more with some great female singers, but THIS work, though not a completely satisfying CD, is still VERY good and worth purchasing. Many of the songs catch up to you, as Buble, singing without apparent enhancement, allows his voice to be a little rawer than in his debut album. He sounds real and true - and his band, as always, is beyond first rate. They are completely in synch, as they are in their concerts. I think, to quote one of the songs on this fine CD, "The Best is Yet To Come," holds true for this great entertainer. He seems sure to produce some kind of concept album, along the lines of "In the Wee Small Hours," ala Sinatra - and I think he can pick better material in some places. But his voice, his band, some of the fine songs, especially his own hit tune, "Everything," make this a MUST for fans. Bubleland is STILL a fine place to be! And the man is building a terrific body of work.

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars The phenom Ms Jones.......2007-06-27

This is such an outstanding production, so much better than the later(I think) CD. Miss Jones should be careful which guitar players back her up. She should stick to Bill Frizell or maybe she should try Mark Knoffler, if she can get him away from Emmy Lou.

5 out of 5 stars Glad i bought it ( Part II )...!.......2007-06-20

I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice, new, fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! If you've waited to give her a listen ,as did I, do yourself a favor and don't wait any longer.

4 out of 5 stars I'd Love To...........2007-06-05

Okay, she's not quite a standards specialist, but a lot of people think Norah Jones is well on her way to setting some new standards of her own.

The daughter of famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Dallas with her mother, and her work is firmly rooted in the dry Texas soil. The youngest in this survey (she was born in 1979), Jones burst on the scene in 2002 with this debut album of nine original songs plus a handful of country and pop standards. Renowned for her sweet and soulful set of pipes, Jones has often been compared to Billie Holiday. There's also a touch of Roberta Flack and Emmylou Harris in there.

Come Away with Me is an honest-to-goodness country-blues recording that you can sit back with on the front porch rocker on a brisk autumn afternoon. Sort of like an early James Taylor, Jones mixes a little bit of country, folk, and soul into a collection that's the perfect antidote to today's insincere fare. The public must have sensed the same thing, because it bought this CD in boxcar loads, and in 2003 Jones walked away with eight Grammies, including album of the year and best new artist.

The title track, written by Jones, is the first new song I've heard in a long time that's utterly believable. "Come away with me and I'll never stop loving you," she begs, and it's as though she's singing it to you, personally. To Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" she brings an R & B feel, petitioning in anguish to her lover man to come back, body and soul. "I've Got to See You Again" is an exquisite modern torch song in the same vein, while "One Flight Down" is an upbeat tune with chord progressions right out of Paul McCartney's Wings songs, like "Carry That Load." She ends with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." Close your eyes, let Jones's words envelope you with their soulful caress, and you'll sense that she's a lot nearer than your living room speakers.

Album Description

Four years since his last studio album, and following up on his highest charting radio single ever ("Personal Jesus", from Lest We Forget), Marilyn Manson returns with "Eat Me, Drink me". Art openings, soundtrack appearances, and personal circumstance have grabbed headlines for Manson in recent months, setting the stage for the release of Eat Me, Drink Me, which is unquestionably the artist's most personal statement yet. Always the provocateur, in what may be the ultimate subversion of the code of aggro-rock, the songs are immediately catchy - all jagged guitar hooks, anthemic choruses, with an overlying glam-rock sheen. Lyrically Manson has never been more riveting, seemingly having enough to draw from in his own life and from society at large to present a fresh, snarling vision.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL!.......2007-07-22

Shoulda never duped "Your God" "Trent" your music is getting worse with each cd. Terrible!

2 out of 5 stars By Far His Worst Album.......2007-07-20

I have been a fan of MM since '98 and I have to say that this album is a real let down. Almost every single song has a long guitar solo at almost the exact place every time, and some songs even sound similar to another before it! Out of the entire album, only about two or three songs really stood out as ok, nothing really blew me away.

I'll give him points for his style change, which sounds like a record from the 70s, sadly however, most of the songs are just boring. I have liked all of his past records, Mechanical Animals is what made me a fan, but I just didn't care for "Eat Me, Drink Me" at all. Hopefully, the next CD will be better

3 out of 5 stars Eat some pickles first.......2007-07-20

Evidence and the Grave song are more classical Manson. I really experienced a great let down with this album when you think of some of the artistic mastuh pieces Manson Marilyn has dun in the early years of her career. Holy Wood was better but I will take this. The sound on this CD is often flawed and be careful when buying this because I had to send mine back 3 times because there is a lot of static and scratches on it. even when i buy at best buy it is the same scratches. I think the cover of this cd is offensive because the eyes are different colors and people like that should wear eye patches ya know. Best experienced when eating pickles I have found. The next album is called Trinity Dominion and I already have it because 300 were released overseas so I ordered one. If you want to hear it you should because there are 5 new songs and 7 unreleased ones that she did from 1998 to 2003. She is very pretty though I do not know why Rose divorced her.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to this cd! .......2007-07-19

I have been a Marilyn Manson fan since 94' when I saw them live with Nine Inch Nails in Sacramento. I love this cd and personally have not been able to stop listening to it since I bought it! I was scared to buy it because of some of the bad reviews, but I'm glad I went with my gut feeling and went for it. "To each his own I guess."

3 out of 5 stars The ones that make you come unglued........2007-07-14

This was a rather disappointing entry from Brian Warner. I don't think anyone would argue that "Antichrist Superstar" is perhaps Warner's best work to date. "Eat Me, Drink Me" is lacking good songs and memorable lyrics. There are a few standout tracks like "The Red Carpet Grave", "They Said That Hell's Not Hot" and "Heart Shaped Glasses", but these are countered with bland, boring tracks like "Evidence", "Are You The Rabbit?" and "Eat Me, Drink Me". This leaves a handful of mediocre tracks like "If I Was Your Vampire", "Putting Holes In Happiness", "Mutilation Is The Most Sincere Form Of Flattery", "You And Me And The Devil Makes 3" and "Just A Car Crash Away".

Mr. Warner needs to find a new gig. After collecting all of his albums and listening to him for 11 years, it seems that he has run out of new morbid ideas. It's time for a change. Is Mr. Warner going to be 50 years old and still wearing the silly spooky fake contact lenses? Is he going to still be writing teenage angst-ridden songs? I find Rob Zombie, Trent Reznor and Ozzy Osbourne to be more mature and even more daring with their music than Marilyn Manson. While "Eat Me, Drink Me" isn't bad, it's nothing close to five stars. In fact, I was more than a little bored this time around, and isn't that the worst criticism you can receive from a fan?

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

This fourth effort from the soft-rock-masquerading-as-country band Rascal Flatts moved more than 721,000 copies its first week out, which let the female-friendly trio rub elbows with some mighty heady company. Only four other country artists (Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, the Dixie Chicks, and Tim McGraw) have rolled out numbers like that, and only 24 other acts total (including Eminem, 50 Cent, U2, and Coldplay). So what's the hook, besides Gary LeVox's wounded tenor and Joe Don Rooney's boy-band face? Clearly, it's the songs. Or it usually is. On Me and My Gang, "What Hurts the Most" is the one that'll end up on a tape loop in your head, though "Yes, I Do" memorably frames romantic yearning and regret with ersatz reggae rhythms, and the sexy "Cool Thing" does a slow burn. The problem? New producer Dann ("King of Excess") Huff bloats too many tunes with screaming, by-the-book guitars and general bombast. And despite his über success with Faith Hill and Keith Urban, Huff has never really understood what makes country, well... country. Instead, he insultingly works in a snippet of steel guitar and a couple of family lyrics--e.g., the melodramatic "Ellsworth" is meant to pull the heartstrings of anyone who's seen the cruelty of Alzheimer's--and thinks he's thrown Nashville a bone. Worse, "Backwards" boringly reworks that hoary ol' country joke "What do you get when you play a country song backwards?," the title song is a Big & Rich ripoff, and even God gets dragged in for a half-baked attempt at middle-America resonance ("He Ain't the Leavin' Kind"). C'mon now. Call these boys pop and be done with the pandering. Joe Don's famously photographed derrière got a fairer crack than this. --Alanna Nash

Thsi album is absolutely great, all of the songs are just so full of emotions and the voice of LeVox just makes it even better, all of the album is a masterpiece though the songs that outstand the most are "What Hurts the Most", "Pieces" (My personal favorite, I just love this song I think I've played it over 400 times in my itunes library already), "My Wish", "Ellsworth" (Nice story the song describes) and "Stand", if you like music with great tunes and lyrics and specially with MEANING, then this is the album for you, by the way this one contains "Life is A Highway" as a fourteenth track unlike the previous April 4rth release.

5 out of 5 stars The End of the Big Voice?.......2007-04-16

This CD, which is truly fine overall, reminds me of Marilyn Horne's lament that we have probably seen the end of the big voice and it makes me sad. I agree with the reviewer who refers to "microphonies". And more justice could be done to Bjorling's voice with a better transfer. But at some point, music becomes a matter of taste and I prefers singers who have the instrument and the support and the training, whether formal or not, to just let fly and take a chance on making a mistake. Domingo can be wonderful and so can his musicianship but he tends to be so stiff. I have to wonder at the virulence and asperity with which some people go after Pavarotti. It's true that late in his career he made some questionable recordings but the answer to that is simple: don't buy them. At his best, he belongs for all time in the top echelon of tenors. I love this CD and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great (big) voices.

5 out of 5 stars Fla Gator Lady.......2007-01-12

Highly recommend this CD with these beloved arias of the greatest tenors in opera. I have owned this CD for a couple of years and purchased another for a friend who always requests that I play it ... perfect for listening in the car, dinner, bridge games, relaxation ... just so perfect. You won't be disappointed in this one.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Great Tenor Arias.......2007-01-09

A great disc, combination of the greatest tenors of the 20th century and some of the most beautiful music ever written in any century,a must addition to any opera lovers collection.

5 out of 5 stars Plesantly surprised..........2006-01-14

I don't remember how I found this CD the other day surfing through the "Amazon" such as it is, but I did. I listened to a few clips provided & on the strength of that, I purchased this CD.

First it is a great buy. A booklet with pictures of each tenor, a small bio, the year recorded and TRANSLATIONS of each aria are provided. This is really nice. It seems more & more that translations are being left out. Being a former opera singer, I may know most of the words, but sometimes it's just nice to read along (sometimes it's just nice to listen too).

Being on the Decca label, there is admittedly quite a few Pavarotti selections. Out of 20 selections, he has 6 of them. But I love Pavarotti, so this is no problem for me. These are all early recordings & his voice is magnificent! Being a singer, I still marvel at his ability to sing "All'armi!" on a high D and still say the 2nd syllable "mi" on such a note! WOW. There is also of course his very sweet, impassioned and lyrical turn as Rodolfo in "La Boheme" as well as the lesser known (although I still have it on casette) "La Favorita" which has a particularly high tessitura.

Also featured are a young Plácido Domingo singing a VERY nice "Flower song/ La fleur que tu m'avais jetée" from Carmen. He usually sounds too pushed for me on the top notes (as one might expect from a Pavarotti fan, I like free top notes) but in this recording he is pretty darn fabulous. He also sings an aria from "Tales of Hoffman/Les Contes d'Hoffman" and I have always felt that he, like Neil Schicoff, were well suited to this role.

Lamentably there are only one selection each from Carreras, Correlli, Monaco, Aragall & Kollo. Especial kudos to the young recording they feature for Aragall. He had a very free and nice high tenor well suited to Verdi. Of course as his career went forward with the natural darkening of his voice and the "heavier" roles, he did start to develop a wobble. But this recording is before that. His top, his phrasing are all beautifully done in his featured aria from "La Traviata."
Mario del Monaco's "E lucevan le stelle" is hauntingly beautiful and has such a wonderful pianissimo in it that it makes you just want to gasp for beauty's sake. I now know every tenor I've heard sing this aria was trying to emulate what he did.

This is a great CD because it does bring together on one CD some of the greatest singers of the 20th/21st century. Bergonzi, di Stefano, Björling, in addition to the previously mentioned artists is quite an impressive collection. I'm sure there's only one of each for Carreras, Aragall (I believe they are formerly EMI/Angel artists) and perhaps some of the others because they are "imported" from another label. There's so much Pavarotti on this CD because he IS a Decca artist.

A highly recommended CD, affordable, not the usually obscure and unpolished artists that are sometimes found on compilations. Plus acutal linear notes and translations. Nicely done, Decca!!!

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Agree About Corelli.......2005-05-27

Franco Corelli's "Nessun Dorma" is still the best of them all - clear, passionate, and exciting. (And those final two notes...! Gives me chills just to think of it.) I was fortunate enough to see him live in both "Turandot" and "Romeo and Juliet" a year before his retirement, and he was still a Calaf and a Romeo to die for... as, of course, Liu and Juliet did! As it is, I tend to buy compilations depending on how much Corelli they include - though Bjorling is a strong second, and I have happy memories of Domingo. Long live the Golden Age of Operatic Tenors!

From Amazon.ca

Finger Eleven's career shifted suddenly and significantly when their 2003 emo-hit "One Thing" turned the band's career on its axis. At that point, they went from being known as 'the boys from Burlington who used to call themselves the Rainbow Butt Monkeys' to a group whose anthemic slow rock song went Platinum in Canada and Gold in America. So how does a band respond after its widespread fame is the result of just one song? In the case of Them Vs. You Vs. Me, Finger Eleven have consciously stayed away from anything remotely resembling their past and put the focus on the straight-ahead alt-rock formula that they've consistently excelled at. There are certain old-school rock influences that bleed clearly through their music, from Rush-isms in the form of frenetic time changes ("Sense of a Spark") to "Talking to the Walls" and "Lost My Way" which evoke Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. Frontman Scott Anderson's voice is impressive throughout, but when he sings ballads, especially "Window Song" and "Easy Life," something enables him to appeal to a whole different audience than traditional alt-rock fans. There is no 'one thing' on this disc that will allow them to reach the heights of their self-titled CD, just a consistency that will provide longtime fans reason to appreciate the band even more. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected!.......2007-07-13

After seeing lukewarm reviews, I went into this with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised! The songs were not all "One Thing" imitations, but rather the band has gone in a different directly with their music. Two of the songs even have a slight 'twang' to them, and while I despise country music, the 'twang' works well on this CD.
Ironically, Amazon has paired this with Chevelle's latest, and those two CD's are currently my top two.

5 out of 5 stars notice a pattern here?.......2007-07-09

notice how everyone who says this is my first time hearing F11 i love it and they give it 5 stars? yea..cuz its a good album..all you 1 star guys own greyest of blue skies and your wanting a repeat...well f11 dosent do that... thats like watching and loving super troupers then renting their 1st release called puddle cruisers and hating it because you wanted another super troupers out of it....but would you have liked the movie if youd never seen super troupers?..most likely....NEVER judge someone on their other works. and you won't ruin the music for yourself.... if them vs you vs me was released my ohh say...some band called cheetah lol and you heard paralyzer...youd prob like the album...

5 out of 5 stars What a great new concept album!.......2007-07-08

I'm a new fan and picked this one up the day it came out because of Paralyzer. I listened for a couple weeks and liked it a lot, then I put it away so I didn't get burned out on it.

I listened again today driving from Philly to DC and really paid attention. Aside from the myriad classic rock influences that can be heard and the solid musicianship, this disc is quite the concept album. Best one I've heard in a long time and I'm very, very rarely impressed by new musical offerings. I understand that this may not be the same sound as their previous offerings but I really don't care. This is good music.

5 stars!

2 out of 5 stars No more paralyzers?.......2007-07-08

I love Paralyzer.. it has a harder sound to it which I was hoping to hear on the rest of the album. Unfortunately, I only liked the first track and found the rest to be a bit of a disappointment. Seems like "Paralyzer" should have been done by Disturbed. The only reason I gave the album a 2 was because it has one song I can't get enough of. Otherwise, it's a zero. Generic and poor lyrics = radio friendly. Not what I'm looking for.

5 out of 5 stars It's Awesome.......2007-06-02

I got into Finger Eleven for their track 'One Thing'. That was a really good song, excellently composed but it did not make a serious fan out of me. That is until the new album 'Them-Vs-You-Vs-Me'.

I find Soctt Andersons vocals consistent throughout the entire album. Yes it is more alternative rock but don't be put off by being classified as a label when it comes to what you listen to. This is a very enjoyable cd.
The tracks, Paraylzed, Falling On, and Taking To The Walls are outstanding in terms of more of the rocking type tracks.

However, this is only a treat before we get some real amazing vocals on some of the more acoustic type tracks.
Real bonus to the CD are the following:

* I'll Keep Your Memory Vague. 5/5
"This won't break your heart, But I just think it could, coz I haven't tried as hard as I should..to..to seperate you from everything I do...but I would never wanna come between us 2" - This entire line is the best vocal I've heard this year for an intro.

* Window Song 5/5
"All The Windows are playing their game...we won't see outisde again...til I ride all the fog away...I'm putting words in their place...but all of the fog is erased & I write all the words I never said"

* Talking To The Walls
-Excellent Intro & again great lyrics. i.e. "Look at the shape I'm in, talking to the walls again'

They have staying power, for the people that have mocked this album, it's been unfair, bands need to evolve.

I would definitely like to extend my gratitude of thanks to Finger Eleven, they put out an album I can really relate to.

Come tour in Auckland, NZ some time.

Jimmy Buffett may have made his millions, but that doesn't mean that he has eased up on his workload. After releasing 33 albums, mounting grueling annual tours, and fashioning an entire industry and lifestyle out of his signature song "Margaritaville," Buffett trots out this two-CD collection. Yet, Meet Me in Magaritaville, which spans 30 years, isn't merely a retread of his long, storied career. Buffett has written two new songs for the package and re-recorded six alternative versions of fan favorites (including a moving version of "The Captain and the Kid," which he included for his ailing father, who died shortly after the album's release). He's also added two new cover songs--a spicy bossa nova version of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" and the Beach Boys' "Sail on Sailor"--as well four live tracks, which shows the singer at his best, conjuring up his own Yuppie Atlantis, an idyllic place where no one has to wear shoes, the sun is always shining, the bar never closes, and Junior Mints are always available at every cinema. A must-have collection for every Parrothead (or aspiring Parrothead), if only for Buffett's track-by-track descriptions. --Jaan Uhelszki

After visiting south Florida and the Keys on several occasions. I heard some of his music whilst there. Bought the cd hoping that it would take me back there whilst being in rainy cold england. It does! Job done. It takes you to sandy beaches, blue skys and laid back bars. Some tracks are a bit cheesy but typical of the sort of music you hear down there.Turn your heating up, grab a beer, close your eyes, put this album on and your almost there.Almost!!

This album is a collection of some of the best stuff Jimmy Buffett has recorded. It's a blend of old and new. Many of the songs are like old friends that you always like to spend time with and although some of the songs are newer, they fit right in with your circle of friends.
I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys slipping away to Margaritaville for a little while. It's music that crosses the generation gap. I'm in my 40's, my parents are in their mid - 60's and my daughter is a teenager, and we all enjoy Jimmy Buffett. If you purchase this album, you won't be disappointed.

Their first-ever album, raw and rough and still very rock & roll. Lennon and McCartney begin to flex their writing muscles and had already scored two UK hits when this appeared, but they still relied heavily on the cover material to see them through. Their insecurity about their own abilities seems curious in hindsight since they'd pulled the title song and "I Saw Her Standing There" (with thanks to Little Richard) out of their hats. But they were an unknown quantity, still to launch a million bands and take pop music to places it had never dreamed off. A small step for four men, a giant leap for music. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars The Start.......2007-07-19

Amazing to think that this is the same group of lads that would give us their swan song Abbey Road a mere 6 years later. However, the youthfulness and exuberance on this album makes it a great beginning. I haven't had this in my collection for a while and listening to it again I marvel at the innocence of this release. Being a huge fan since childhood this isn't one of my top Beatles albums but it sure is a fun listen and definitely a record to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah, this is the good stuff.......2007-06-12

The Beatles' debut album. Before they got pretentious. Which isn't to say they weren't still great when they got pretentious, just they were great AND pretentious. Here they're just great. People are so awed by the ostentation of the later albums that they underrate this one. But it's got an immediacy none of the other Beatles albums have (well, maybe A HARD DAY'S NIGHT). As everybody else notes, it's practically a live album. I could do without Paul's cover "A Taste of Honey," but otherwise this is perfection. You got "Please Please Me," probably the dirtiest hit song since Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti." You got Ringo singing a cover of "Boys," making it a great little gay camp number. John Lennon does punk before punk with the cover of the Isley Brothers' "Twist and Shout." And "I Saw Here Standing There" is one of the most perfect album openers ever. Given the fact that overblown pretension is so much the order of the day in every corner of the pop music world at the moment (it's like all we're back to the era of those mid-50s standards by Perry Como and Doris Day with all the overdone plush strings and sentimental bombast -- You know, the music rock, rap and soul was supposed to kill), this lean, punchy album is an essential antidote. Play it along with Louis Armstrong 's early Fives and Sevens recordings and The Ramones' first album in order the get the desired effect.

Why do some people only look into their later stuff, and completly ignore the early stuff? Take _______ note, what peopel say, the Beatles progressed a _____load. You won't find any strings, horns, or not even much piano, just the foru and their guitars (with some harmonica and other _____). When this first came out, it was a revolution for rock music. Plus, it's influential and very _________ good.

This has my favorite early Beatles song, I Saw Her Standing There. But that's not it. It has Love Me Do, Anna, Twist and Shout, just 14 extremely catchy songs. I do wish that Amazon would put some _________ samples. Seriously. You listening, you piece of ______ site?

I will say that this, Please Please Me was, yes, a ________ stepping stone for rock. _____ the people who say the Beatles were nothing more than just a 60's Backstreet Boys. This is when the group members all worked together, made pure music, and didn't use _________ overdubbing and recording. The guy who wrote a review some reviews below explained well. Yeah, The Beatles later albums were nothing influential, despite what anyone says (Sgt. Pepper's did ____ for rock, just pop. It's nothing more than a noveltly record). I didn't give a _____, Hendrix and Zeppelin carried the tourch, im glad the Beatles went their own way, because Sgt. Pepper may have been the most overhyped album, ever, but it still is a masterpiece.

I can't reccomend this enough. Buy it!

There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion.

Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley

What a voice, what an artist, what a man.
Underestimated in Europe. His concert on 21 May 2007 in Amsterdam was superb!

5 out of 5 stars Oh my Gosh, Josh!.......2007-07-03

I love Josh Groban's music! It is romantic, mellow and beautiful :)
This CD has two songs on it that are very unusual. I believe both are from Cirque de Soleil, and draw you into the music--warning-- While driving, do not close your eyes!

5 out of 5 stars a true star.......2007-06-24

First saw and heard Josh on the Tv and was blown away by his talent! it was about a year later that I found out who he was and bought the first album and can honestly say that I have never tired of his work. Every song is magical and he is truely wonderful. Have since purchased all his work and have also had the priviledge of seeing him live in concert in Glasgow/Scotland and was amazed. such a talented young man with a truely magical voice

5 out of 5 stars Floodgates of the Heart.......2007-06-05

This CD played almost constantly in my wife's car for several years. Josh Groban's voice is so gentle and can go from gentleness to anthematic, almost operatic, textures. He sings in Italian effortlessly. The orchestration on "Cinema Paradiso" is enthralling with its emotional reach, powerful even with lyrics beyond my understanding. "To Where You Are" is one of the most gorgeous songs. Knowing how it moved my wife in the years before breast cancer proved stronger than her body, it touches me now, "Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star I wish upon tonight to see you smile, if only for awhile to know you're there; a breath a ways to where you are." The song opens the floodgates of my heart. The Corrs were on Groban's 143 label when this release came out in 2001 and join him on the upbeat "Canto Alla Vita." Groban makes an interesting selection with Don McLean's "Vincent," polishing the melody to a fine sheen in ways that surpassed the original. Listening to Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is like being in a sonic cathedral with Groban's voice matching the grandeur of the music. With Charlotte Church on "The Prayer," Groban concludes the set with the Carole Bayer Sager/David Foster composition that makes one contemplate the eternal, "Lead us to a place, find us with your grace, give us faith so we'll be safe." Groban's first CD enhances with repeated listening by virtue of the depth of musicianship and performance. I listen to it now hearing the music that moved the one I love to tears. It does the same for me. I hope it touches you too. Bravo!
