good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19

Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.

Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15

Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.

Great 80's psychedelic.......2007-06-11

I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

This is a mixture of choral and orchestral music by two great American composers, music that can only be described as patriotic. But don't let that keep you away from Copland's heartbreaking Lincoln Portrait or Roy Harris's much-neglected American Creed. James Earl Jones supplies the narration in Lincoln Portrait. American Creed is filled with Harris's usual open harmonies and melodic expansiveness and is actually a very complex triple fugue. The miking for this entire recording isn't as close to the orchestra or clear as it could be, but this is a great collection nonetheless. --Paul Cook

The True Spirit Of America.......2006-05-18

It is often the case that the true spirit of America can be found in the artists it has given the world throughout history. And no composer embodies our nation's spirit much better than Aaron Copland, as can be gauged on this Delos recording of works by him and fellow American composer Roy Harris, as performed by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra under music director Gerard Schwarz.

The true essence of patriotism, a term too often used for less-than-honorable ends by certain political operatives throughout history, is very evident in both Copland's and Harris' works. Harris is represented by the intensely proud two-part work "American Creed", and his 1935 overture "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", based on the famous World War I song. It is also evident in Copland's rarely heard "Canticle Of Freedom", which here is sung by the Seattle Symphony Chorale.

It is in the three popular Copland pieces--"Fanfare For The Common Man"; "Lincoln Portrait"; and "An Outdoor Overture"--that the best of America lies. The towering brass chorale of "Fanfare" symbolizes, as its title surely indicates, the ability of the common man to achieve the uncommon; while "An Outdoor Overture", written in the 1930s for the Manhattan High School of Music & Art, celebrates American youth. And then there's "Lincoln Portrait", with the words of our 16th president spoken by James Earl Jones, one of our country's greatest actors and voices, with great strength and authority, allowing us to know that while we may be the greatest nation on Earth, we can ALWAYS be better. Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony provide masterful performances throughout this stunning 1992 recording. This is highly recommended for anyone wanting to know the true spirit of our nation beyond the constant and often wreckless political rhetoric that so often abounds here.

Great Lesser-known Masterpieces.......2005-11-03

Portraits of Freedom is a CD featuring works by Aaron Copland and Roy Harris which have a special emphasis on democracy. Not just a "hack" American music CD, features include the very well known to some virtually unknown compositions making this a welcome addition to the Copland/Harris recorded music oeuvre.

Fanfare for the Common Man brings nothing new, but it is such a great miniature. Less recorded is the Lincoln Portrait. Copland opens with a slow triumphant fanfare melody which gives way to a faster "Camptown Races" melody and brilliantly weaves the two together. The piece ends with a dramatic reading by James Earl Jones.

Canticle of Freedom, rarely heard, features chorus. The music and text are interesting enough to wonder why it has been neglected. Along with the Outdoor Overture, Copland uses not only uses his trademark rhythms and harmonies, but dissonance is judiciously placed to give his music an American experience.

Roy Harris' American Creed and When Johnny Comes Marching Home are also rarely heard, nonetheless recorded. Harris' music is a bit more ponderous than that of Copland, and while Harris sticks with more classical formal designs, it is interesting to note the many harmonic and orchestration similarities which exist between the two composers. Harris' energetic "When Johnny..." is also very interesting, especially when compared to the more famous American Salute by Morton Gould.

The liner notes are voluminous accounts into the background of Copland. You really get the gist of how close he was to music and patriotism and how that evolved throughout the 20th Century. The Seattle Symphony plays well on this disk; you can tell they have a real feel of the music. While you can find better recordings of Fanfare and the Outdoor Overture, you can't beat this Lincoln Portrait, and you probably won't find the other works anywhere else, especially so well performed. Copland was serious about music and democracy and it shows in these works; the lesser known ones are greatly eclipsed by his more famous works, and so you probably have to be a Copland junkie to buy this CD. In that case, this will be an easy buy for you!

James Earl Jones Is SUPURB.......2004-10-02

I have listened to several recordings of the Lincoln Portait narrated by Henry Fonda, Carl Sandberg and Katherine Hepburn. James Earl Jones surpases all of them by a wide margin. Every word James speaks comes from his heart and it is a moving experience.

An interesting note: Every speaker since James reads the following line, "government of the people, by the people, and for the people." with the emphasis on the words "of", "by" and "for". When James reads it he shift the emphasis to the word "people" each time and it makes an impressive difference. He is masterful. I've must have played this piece at least 10 times since I received it a week ago.

Great Fourth of July album.......2003-01-11

If you buy this CD, you'll probably do so for Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait." You won't be disappointed, either, for this is one of the best renditions of that particular symphonic war-horse in print. It's well performed, and James Earl Jones's majestic voice transcends the kitschier aspects of Copland's narration.

"Fanfare for the Common Man" is also here in all its brassy glory, although if you're like me you've heard it so often it gives you a headache. But in all likelihood you haven't heard the other Copland works on this CD: "Canticle of Freedom" and the seldom-performed "An Outdoor Overture." "An Outdoor Overture" is second-tier Copland -- a pleasant symphonic poem, nothing too remarkable. "Canticle of Freedom," on the other hand, exemplifies Copland's worst tendencies as a composer; most of it is just noisy and not musically interesting.

The real surprise here is Roy Harris's three-movement "American Creed," which is both inspiring and musically sound. It is a patriotic symphony that mostly avoids bombast, and it ought to be performed far more often. Harris is a much underrated composer, and this is one of his best works.

On the whole, this CD is a smashing good classical music collection for a Flag Day or Fourth of July holiday -- or for any time you just want to celebrate being an American.

Perfect collection of patriotic fare........1999-10-14

The inclusion of Copland's "Fanfare" and "A Lincoln Portrait" into a CD such as this is a no-brainer, but these recordings are the best of their kind--tremendous sound, and the quintessential narrator in Jones to complete it. Schwarz also blesses us with one of Copland's little-known choral works that sends a powerful patriotic message, and the "Outdoor Overture" is simply Copland at his jovial best at the prime of his composing career. The selected Harris works add further impact to the disc: the only recording available of "American Creed," along with Harris' unforgettable interpretation of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," round it out wonderfully. The Roy Harris works may be the true highlight of the disc--if that's possible. Another splendid job by Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony.

Retro darling of the jazz vocal, Jane Monheit appears with her sophomore effort, Come Dream with Me, following the splash of Never Never Land with a long-reaching ripple. At 23, Monheit is remarkably gifted not only of voice, but with lyrical interpretation and genuine feel for a song, singing, for example, the oft-recorded "Somewhere over the Rainbow" from inside the song, making it a thing of understated beauty, rich purity, and charming hopefulness. Pianist Kenny Barron reprises his role as swing-daddy pianist, while the remainder of the instrumental ensemble is made up of younger though no less able jazzbos. Largely thus far an interpreter of standards, with strong emphasis on the ballad (stunningly lovely renditions of "Blame It on My Youth," "Something to Live For," and "I'm Through with Love"), Monheit also takes on the syrupy "If" from Bread's catalog, turning it to spun caramel. And then there's the closer: from the highly favored Blue, a scrumptious and sensual rendition of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You." --Paige La Grone

Jazz Singer?.......2007-02-25

First, there is no such creature as a jazz singer. All the great "so called" jazz singers stay far too close to the written melody! Jazz is about improvising. ( I know Ella and Sarah do their scat thing but I don't like that!) When people talk about "jazz singing" they are talking about phrasing, timing and "swing", and this is a very personal "taste" thing. This album doesn't claim to be jazz! And I have no problem with the soloist "playing it safe". I've heard examples of jazz musicians spoiling a great vocal performance with an inappropriate sounding solo. Jane sounds fine to me!

The songs in this beautiful and dreamy album evoke images of a lovely summer's day that will bring back your fondest memories, of a rainbow where "troubles melt like lemon drops" and of "so many stars" that you won't even know which one is yours. It also speaks of a "locked heart with icy Frigidaire" and the "end of all strains and the joy in your heart the waters of March bring."

From the opening "Over The Rainbow" to the closing "A Case Of You," Jane Monheit will surely add elegance to your listening experience with her heartfelt, sincere and moving interpretations. She's ably backed by some of finest musicians in the jazz scene, the likes of Kenny Barron (piano), Christian McBride (bass), Gregory Hutchinsonn (drums), with special participations of Tom Harrell (trumpet), Richard Bona (guitar and fretless bass) and the late Michael Brecker (sax).

Ms. Monheit's sheer vocal seductiveness shows in every note of these delightful songs. She nailed and aced even the most difficult songs to interpret such as Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Waters of March" and Sergio Mendes and Alan and Marilyn Bergman's "So Many Stars." She uniquely delivers like no other.

Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg's "Over The Rainbow," Edward Heyman and Oscar Levant's "Blame It On My Youth" and "If," a popular song penned by David Gates of the Bread, are also my top choices. I have never heard any other versions as beautiful as her interpretations. She's the only one other than Doris Day who have included the opening verse of "Over The Rainbow" and I think it is remarkably beautiful. I listened to it with repeats before listening to the rest of the tracks. I'd say she's now the new owner of this beautiful classic. Trumpeter Tom Harrell plays that enchanting bridge, so charming that you wish he would play it over again.

Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal's classic "I'll Be Seeing You" is simply splendid and so overwhelmingly moving with that sax solo from one of my favorite saxophonists of all-time, the late Michael Brecker, who succumbed to cancer just a week ago. His death is such a great loss to the music industry considering his incredible talent. Listening to his sax solo brought tears to my eyes. May he rest in peace.

Jane Monheit is not only a singer, she's more than just a jazz singer, she's truly an exceptional jazz singer, and this gorgeous album is a proof.

Jane Momheit - "Come Dream With Me".......2007-01-09

Shows promise but misses the mark.......2006-07-11

Jane Monheit has a lovely voice and a lot of potential. Listening to this recording and to her 2000 release Never Never Land, it occurred to me that the problem may be in her song selection. Based on these two recordings, Ms. Monheit should stick to Jobim and great children's songs. Her voice and temperament on these recordings seem very well suited for those. For example, on Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, she seems less than comfortable but on Over The Rainbow and Waters of March the results are very nice indeed.

Overall this is a nice enough cd from a young woman with a lovely voice.

Great showcase for Jane Monheit.......2005-07-24

Having first heard of Jane Monheit on noticing her CD in the store, plus finding out she covered "Under The Rainbow" for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, my curiosity was further piqued upon that track also appearing on Come Dream With Me, which preceded Take A Chance On Me, as well as certain other cover tunes. That being said, I got CDWM, and it's usual smoky lounge jazz, with Monheit sporting some nice pipes, more resonant and crystalline than say, Karrin Allyson.

The covers in question are Bread's "If," one of my favourites here, a mellow affair sporting a resonant bass and hushed piano and brushes. The other was one of my personal and perennial theme songs, "I'm Through With Love," the song Marilyn Monroe sings towards the end of Some Like It Hot. However, the bluesy piano and tempo is akin to la Monroe's "I'm Gonna File My Claim." The tempo somehow plays havoc with lines such as "I've locked my heart, I'll keep my feelings there/I've stocked my heart with icy Frigidaire/and I mean to care for no one." Monroe sung it with a more morose tone in keeping with the song. As with Bread, her cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" demonstrates her pop roots. The only other cover I've heard is Tori Amos's version, so chalk up two who can do justice to that song.

Her cover of "Over The Rainbow" is one of the better versions of Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz classic I've heard, as her vocals resonates over the initially a capella first verse before accompanied by piano and later, by trumpet. The bonus track is her at an early age warbling a few verses of it.

She does her touch at samba on the swaying and lively "Waters of March" penned by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Good for a light dance. For the lonely at heart, here's one for you. A melancholy piano and tone sets her cover of Frances Landesman's "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most." It's one of those mellow songs one hears at the bar and gets even sadder on tuning into the words, feeling like "a horse that never left the post/I lie in my room/staring up at the ceiling." If one's lucky, one will drown oneself with another strong one, preferably a double. If not, one might stagger back home and search for something sharp and metallic. Something of a similar tempo is the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn-penned "Something To Live For." It's basically a yearning laundry list of fulfilling things for the heart and soul, having "life as an adventurous dream" and "kissing the one I could care for" as opposed to material things. This is a real showcase for her voice.

Ditto for the introspective "So Many Stars." Jane sings of a song or dream for every star, and wondering which song is hers, a metaphor for which path and destiny is hers to go. "So many stars, so many hearts, so many smiles," which one to choose, indeed? And the things go with the immature and untried trials one goes with an early love is demonstrated in "Blame it On My Youth."

With a great voice, Jane Monheit does have a possibility in being the next big modern jazz dame after Diane Krall. Come Dream With Me succeeds as a showcase for Monheit's wonderful vocals, overshadowing the instrumentation at times.

Good CD, especially if you're a fan of Mark O'Conner. I have to admit that a couple of the tracks seem rather directionless (in a Vaughn Williams sort of way) and I tend to lose interest, but other tracks are fun, even exciting. The production is excellent throughout.

I watched the documentary and heard Mark O'Connor play this piece in a concert and loved it immediately. The music is great to help the battles come alive but great for just listening to anyway.

Finest Music Ever Heard.......2002-03-27

I heard this music on the excellent P B S Documentary: "Liberty - the American Revolution" and I knew I had to have it! It is the finest music I have heard, capturing the heart and soul of the American Revolution. The documentary "Liberty" was a masterpiece that was beautiful and moving. So too this music with its most wonderful arrangements and accompaniment. I love it! I could hardly wait to get it in the mail. It framed the documentary (which I also bought) like a great frame compliments a beautiful canvas painting. Superlatives fail me. This music must be experienced by first watching the great series on the American Revolution and then by listening to it apart. This is some of the most wonderful music I have ever heard. It reminds me of the genius of Aaron Copland who wrote the Applachian Spring and Rodeo suites.

This CD stands on its own merits as good music, not simply as music for a TV show. It evokes images of America old and new. Very Strong Comeback.......2007-06-20

I honestly was not that impressed with 'Back to the World'. There were some great cuts like "In Defense of Dorchester", "A Tale of Mass Deception", "Stagger", but for some reason it just seemed like it was lacking the extra bit of life that drove 'Savin Hill'.

Whatever worries I might have had were shredded by 'Fading American Dream'. It is a tough, honest, fat-free recording fully showcasing a confident band that means business. The Street Dogs' rhythm section has always been strong, but here the guitars sound rejuvenated and utterly menacing, and somehow seem to increase the effortless ferocity of Mike's vocals. He has without a doubt the perfect voice for this band's sound.

The material here is consistent, and as a whole nothing feels out of place. Highlights include the fiery opener "Common People", "Fatty", "Tobe's Got a Drinking Problem", "Rights to Your Soul", the really cool "Hard Luck Kid" and the title track. Honorable mentions go to Billy Bragg's "There is Power in the Union" and the startlingly convincing (in an era where a lot of artists sing about this topic) "Final Transmission".

As you can see, most of the tracks are pretty good. Hopefully I have enticed you to enough to check this album out.

Stunningly Great CD.......2007-04-19

I bought this because I loved Do or Die and would have been happy with this CD if it had been pretty good. Instead this recording far exceeded my expectations. Mike's passion for what he believes in is clear on every song but the band never forgets that this is a punk record. This is everything I expect from a punk album - heart felt compassion for the middle and working classes and expletives hurled at the ruling class - all that with a driving guitar rich beat.

This cd is absolutely amazing. The dogs have created a cd where every song on the album is brilliant. Every song is written and played with heart and soul. The standouts would be sell your lies, final transmission and fading american dream. If you love smart punk, get this cd!

Punk with heart.......2006-12-02

I bought this album after wandering around one night in Chicago. I haven't been able to stop playing it since. I've also peddled backwards and found every other Street Dogs album. They fit the bill as a nearly perfect punk band and this album may be their best yet.

But what I really love besides the street punk sound and high energy shows is the fact that everytime I listen to this record I feel like the band/McColgan really cares about everything they/he sings about. When he sings "Fatty" I feel like he gets the pain of that isolated kid, he strongly believes in the "Power of a Union," he really is fighting for the "Common People," and by god, Tobe really might have a drinking problem. It's so very rare to hear music with such tenacity, passion and especially heartfelt honesty. The only shame here is that more people haven't heard them yet.
