    Album Description

    In this wonderful collection of solo piano ballads, Matthew Cook brings a fresh outlook to many timeless classics from several decades of music from the soulful `Stormy Weather' of yesteryear to Jobim's `Corcovado' to Denny Sarokin's recently penned `Sanibel', which first appeared on CSNY's `Looking Forward' album of 2000.

    Denny had this to say about `Sanibel' :

    "I did check out "Sanibel". You did a beautiful job of transfering the spirit of an acousticfolk/pop piece into an eloquent, posh piano arrangement. I'm honored thatyou considered my song for your CD, especially in the company of so many other classic songs."

    Once again the elaborate arrangements of this pianist are evident in such songs as the Beatles' `Dear Prudence' , Billie Holiday's `God Bless The Child', and `You've Changed'. However, this album presents a departure for Cook with several songs that are simply and elegantly stated. The great Gershwin Classic `Someone To Watch Over Me', `Moon River', the Eagle's `Desperado'', `Here, There & Everywhere', and the abovementioned `Sanibel' are examples from all over the musical spectrum. Of these songs Cook had this to say: "Some songs just cry out to be played as they were written...more or less... they seem to just want to be played simply and smoothly."

    Stormy Weather is a true collection of well-played ballads, many familiar yet some from beyond the realm of common piano repertoire. Perfect for a roaring fire on a cold night, this is a very romantic album.

    "Stormy Weather" is a fascinating collection of solo piano arrangements from a dizzying variety of sources - standards to Antonio Carlos Jobim to the Beatles to Henry Mancini. Matthew Cook has been performing in some of the finest hotels, resorts, and restaurants in Northern California for the past twenty years, and truly knows how to play "something for everyone." Although Cook's playing is very accomplished, he doesn't waste a lot of energy playing glissandos up and down the piano or trilling everything to death, as many pianists do to demonstrate their showmanship. Cook's interpretations allow the melodies to sing through without overdoing the frills - something I really appreciate! I love his take on the standards in this collection - a bluesy title tune that is leisurely and poignant; George and Ira Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me" is given a breezy treatment with a gentle rhythm and wistful mood; "God Bless the Child" is dark and brooding with an extended improvisation in the middle that is very effective; "You've Changed" is played in a bluesy style with a great "walking bass" on left hand. Cook included two tracks by The Beatles: "Here, There, and Everywhere" and "Dear Prudence," with the latter track being my favorite on the CD. The infectious left hand rhythm and spare melody line are terrific! I also really like Denny Sarokin's "Sanibel," a warm and inviting ballad that dances off the piano keyboard. A few of the other titles include "Candle in the Wind," "Moon River," "Desperado," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." I've really enjoyed this collection, and recommend it to those looking for a fresh take on some old favorites.

          This song is fantastic. Every time i put this in the cdplayer someone always comes up to me and asks,what is that! The guitar work along with the smooth vocals are just excellent. We need more like this. Reminds me alof of the old song "Shady", by Pearls.
