          4 out of 5 stars very Ka-Spel.......2001-01-24

Of all the Ka-Spel solo albums this is one of my favorites all because of the oh so haunting Tanith and the Lion Tree, addictive Bakersman, and the painfully real Prithee. Now that I've heard these songs and have been entranced by their creepings I can no longer live without them. If you like LPD and Edward you MUST own this album or you will never be added to the big "I'm an obcessed LPD fan" list in the heavens.

His lyrics are not as dark as some of his other releases, but fear not, they're plenty dark. The music reminds me a lot of LPD's Nemesis Online album.

          3 out of 5 stars Wait until it's re-released domestically.......2000-07-24

This album isn't one of Ka-Spel's very best, but it's a must if you're an LPD completist like I am. The album could have benefited from having some of the weaker tracks shorn off, such as the annoying "Four Out of Ten." Still, it contains some fine examples of Ka-Spel's paranoiac ramblings, sung in a child-like voice over strange, distorted electronics. At times he sounds like Raffi undergoing trauma therapy, especially on narrative-based songs like the title track and "The Bakersman." This is clearly a man who would be wandering the streets trying to introduce people to universal conspiracy theories if he hadn't channeled his energies into becoming a brilliant experimental pop star. However, do yourself a favour and wait until it's re-released domestically by Soleilmoon.

5 out of 5 stars Consistent album by my favourite artist.......2003-10-18

I am in disagreement with the review by David m.matallín on the suggestion that one should begin listening to Ka-Spel's music with another album, this was the first album I ever heard by Edward & I have been a fan ever since. However I agree that Edward's music touchs something inside of me no other artistic manifestation had reached before. I think one should buy this album to begin listening to Edward, "Shadow Weaver" for Legendary Pink Dots, & "Last Man to Fly" by the Tear Garden. Beautifully dark & distorted piece, this album will allways be one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars inconsistent album by my favourite artist.......2003-03-01

I love Edward Ka-spel's music more than any other. His music, both in his work with The Legendary Pink Dots and with Te Tear Garden, and also his solo works, touch something inside of me no other artistic manifestation had reached before. And having in mind that his work is so vast: In my opinion, no other artist like Ka-Spel has ever combined quality and quantity in such a brilliant manner. And so with more than 40 albums, it's logical to have our personal preferences.

All this was just to say that 'Tanith and the Lion Tree' is not definetely one of my dearest Ka-spel works. Not at all. It has good songs, yes, no Ka-spel work hasn't. 'Tanith and the Lion Tree' is sweet, 'Hotel x' is marvellous and so so delicate. But as a whole, I think this album is one of the 2 or 3 most inconsistent Ka-spel albums I've ever heard, together with LPD's 'All the King's Men' and 'Malachai' and Tear Garden's 'Crsytal Mass'.

The album is very subtle, with a fragile electronic sound quite typical of the wonderful musician that made it. However, there are some instrumental songs that spoil the stream of listening. And some of the vocal songs are dull.

To a completist or a true admirer I'd say: buy it, all Ka-spel works are worth buying.

To a beginner in the vast and disturbing universe of Ka-spel's music I'd say: start with another one, this album may make you think Ka-spel is just a good musician but nothing else, and it doens't display that lyricism, that musical complexity and minimalism at the same time, that brillaince of his music.
If I were you, I'd start with these albums by The Legendary Pink Dots: 'The Maria Dimension', 'All the King's Horses' or 'Any Day Now'; The Tear Garden's 'Last Man to Fly'; or his solo album 'Red Letters'.

And then, buy the rest, included this one. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars "Dedicated to the Gentle, Noble Soul".......2002-05-19

There are so many good songs here. This solo piece (originally released on Third Mind in 1991) gives free rein to Edward's poetry.

This came into my life at a time when a dear friend was passing out of this life, so it speaks to me in a personal way which is awkward to describe. Does any song have the power to bring back the dead, even momentarily, physically-to comfort and calm? Damned if I know, but 'Hotel X' has done it for me. "...And me? I watched my tired eyes slowly burning. Slowly burning . (Fade away)."

There are 13 other fine songs on here, with words you can chew on for weeks (or decades).

5 out of 5 stars If you can find it... buy it!.......2000-01-06

Edward is not diminished in the least in this solo effort. This album will leave you wondering what LPD would be without Qa-Spell. Moments of ambeint minimalism create an atmosphere of strange isolation that will actually leave you feeling quite relaxed. Buy the damn thing, it might not be around next paycheck.
