4 out of 5 stars Pettibone at his best.......2007-07-20

This maxi-CD is great for a couple of reasons. First off, it features one of Shep Pettibone's best remixes. His "Velvet Rail" mix of "Sugar Daddy" lays down a slammin' house groove that also samples the Instant Funk disco classic "I've Got My Mind Made Up". While normally I dislike the way certain house producers place the vocals inside brand new melodies that seem at odds with one another, it works great here. The mixes that stick more closely to the original "Sugar Daddy" don't work nearly as well, which is odd.

This is also worth picking up because of the great B-side track "Monkey Man", which is better than most of the album tracks from its mother album, "Big Trash".

4 out of 5 stars At first listen I was dissapointed.......2003-03-12

I thought- Nothing new under the sun, and I thought Kid Bangham sounded a little uninspired, but I've listened to this album over and over in the last few days, and it keeps getting better and better.Sugar Ray along with Kim Wilson, is the best singer/ harpplayer in blues today. His songwriting is excellent- always with a new, fresh angle. And the band is SO subtle. Wonderful

    5 out of 5 stars Sugar Ray's back!!!.......2001-07-01

I first heard Sugar in the early 90s on his debut "Kockout". Since then Sugar's been recording and touring with some fantastic names in the business, like Kim Wilson, Ronnie Earl and Otis Grand, but the true Sugar Ray (& Bluetones) album has been c. 10 years in the coming. Now, the wait has been worth it, the grit, sweat and "true" blues-sound out of these experienced gentlemen is a pleasure to hear. The quartet is solid and especially Mudcat Ward's mostly stand-up bass provides just the perfect foil for a steady groove. Sugar is blowing the harp with a vengeance and his barytone vocals simply just right! The sounds are Chicago, swamp Louisiana and that rockin' Texas blues. Don't miss this one, one of the best blues albums of the year!

3 out of 5 stars Soulful But Lacking Punch!.......2001-06-23

Ten years after last recording with the Bluenotes, Sugar Ray is back. Like his two previous recordings with this group--1989's "Knockout" and 1990's "Don't Stand In My Way" Sugar Ray provides some soulful sweet vocals and some outstanding harp. The band, however, is somewhat flat and disjointed. There are some very good tunes on the disc such as "She's Blued and Broken" and "Room 531" but overall, Sugar Ray just does not seem to be in the same form he was in when playing with the Roomful of Blues. On the otherhand, if you are looking for some laid back blues, you may actually find this enjoyable.

New England boasts a rich blues history, and Rhode Island itself, may well become the hotbed of years past with this new release from Sugar Ray Norcia. Fronting the Bluetones, Norcia is back where he belongs on "Rockin' Sugar Daddy." The Bluetones have a long and storied history as well. Formed decades ago, it has featured, at one time or another, the talents of Ronnie Earl, Anthony Geraci, Ola Dixon, Peter 'HiFi' Ward, Sarah Brown, Kaz Kazanoff, and many others. Quick history overview; when Ronnie Earl left Sugar to replace Duke Robillard (following his departure from Roomful of Blues), a relative unknown stepped up in the form of Kid Bangham, and took over the guitar slot. At his side were the cream of New England's blues hierarchy; Mudcat Ward on bass, Anthony Geraci on piano and organ, Neil Gouvin on drums, and the testifying of Ray Norcia out front. It became apparent right fast, that 'Kid' was a force to be reckoned with. Touring relentlessly, recording sporadically, the Bluetones were the best around. Later, Ray departed for the frontline in Roomful and Kid went on to join the Fabulous Thunderbirds, while Mudcat, Anthony, and Neil, continued in different bands. Finally, back on familiar turf, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones can pick up where they left off, minus Anthony Geraci, who now resides in Vermont.

Simply put, this is blues... stripped-down, raw, emotional, and heartfelt. Kicking off the party with an Excello-styled original, "Rockin' Sugar Daddy," sets the table for more than fifty minutes of four-piece, gutbucket, in-your-face blues. Slim Harpo's "Got Love If You Want It," rumbles along making way for Mudcat Ward's disturbingly brilliant, "She's Blued and Broken." With a stumbling feel, it's the twisted and harrowing tale of a murderous wife who chalked up nine homicides, while the search for number ten continues, it just don't get no better than that! Norcia's "Call Me Lonesome" kicks forth with plenty of power, then Kid Bangham gets into the writing chair. Laced with heavy chromatic harp and Sugar's distinctive, powerful vocals, the slow and riveting "Room 531" will hold attention for sure. Another Norcia-penned gem comes in "The Picture," a drilling Chicago groove, with Ray laying down the law to a wrong-doin' woman, and steps aside for the classic, "It's My Life, Baby." At just shy of seven minutes, it's the longest track on the CD, but there's no showmanship or grandstanding; grit, sweat, harp, guitar, and a stellar rhythm section get the point across just fine, with dynamics at the fore. Little Walter's "Off The Wall" goes through a fierce workout with Norcia proving, once again, he's in a class with few others when it comes to taking on Jacobs' genius. "Lonesome Cabin," another Norcia cut, gets a Sonny Boy II treatment with plenty of rasping harmonica and top-shelf singing, as Bangham does some fine understated guitar playing. "Warm Hearted Woman" is a stomping Texas shuffle with the Kid laying down some great work, and the Louisiana-like ballad of "You Can't Be the One for Me" is stunning with everyone contributing to the outcome. Norcia took out the pen for "Low Down Lady," another Excello-laden track with great lyrics, and the disc closes out with Mudcat's "Walk Hand In Hand," a slow moving, churchy instrumental that features harp and piano (although uncredited, it could be Mudcat at the keys).

Norcia's return to fronting a small band is great news for blues fans. Stellar work by Mudcat and Gouvin, one of the finest rhythm sections anywhere, goes a long way in getting to the core of Sugar's big voice and juiced harp, and Kid Bangham puts on a clinic of tasteful and drilling guitar. This CD should raise quite a bit of interest for the Severn label, and they already have a great lineup of artists, including Darrell Nulisch, Big Joe Maher, Steve Guyger, and others. With Sugar Ray & the Bluetones stepping in and filling the void they left, New England fans, and many others, will once again get a taste of how it's done on the East Coast.... 4 out of 5 stars Dollar store star.......2007-07-13

Every once in awhile I'll go into an Indian-owned Dollar store and buy a few of their $1 CDs off the rack. Well, of all CDs I bought, this is the only one that wasn't chucked out of the window on the way back from the store.

Mike G definately has something going here. Catchy and has the lo-fi feeling that many bands try to achieve. This one sounds like it was recorded in his bedroom.

Its a cd that distinctly has an indie feel, a REAL indie feel. Its a great ad dition to my collection of good music out there...

5 out of 5 stars probably the best thing EVER.......2005-04-12

I received this CD as a gift from a fabulous friend and it changed my life. I've been scouring the internet looking for more Mike G. This album is great to listen to while cruising with your girls. We've had some amazing parking lot dance parties to this fine CD. I'm horrified that this wasn't nominated for a Grammy. The lyrics are so insightful, they truly come from a gifted mind.

4 out of 5 stars The lighter side of alt-pop........2001-06-05

"She is Asian. I'm caucasian." - Mike G's "Asian Girl"

How refreshing. Mike G's collection of 16 bite-sized, hook-laden tracks is one of the brighter stars to come out indie label SeeThru Broadcasting. Like label mates Enon, Starlight Mints and Thou, Mike G has a distinctive quirkiness to his sound.

The songwriting is light and fun (a la Beck), but the hooks are the, well, hook for Mike G. From the drum box on the very first track ("Clothing Store Girl") to the bass line on "Not the End of the World" to the piano line on "Sugar Daddy," the hooks provide the breezy texture upon which the album is built.

5 out of 5 stars Equal parts goofy and catchy.......2001-01-13

Take a little Beastie Boys, add some Pixies, and top it off with some Enon, and you've got Mike G.'s "Sugar Daddy." At its best, the songs included are a catchy mix of hip hop and grunge. Distortion adds scratch to the polished tracks, but by far the most interesting aspect are the lyrics -- funny, goofy, and dead-on. Like belly-laughing with a dopey prankster friend; but with a great soundtrack.

The Sugar Daddy Swing Kings come swinging to us from San Luis Obispo, CA., where they are making a name for themselves there, and in other parts of California. This eight member band puts together a great first album with "How BIG Can You Get." The album features mainly original works by George Stone, a very talented writer and musician. There is simply not enough praise for the work that Stone turns out. The album swings out great tunes and makes you want to get up and dance. The lyrics, written and sung by frontman Paul Brown, are fun and light. The band has a great and memorable sound. SDSK displays real talent in this work and should be recognized and appreciated. The album will appeal to new swing listeners or those who put on their dancing shoes at clubs. The Sugar Daddy Swing Kings are recommended to anyone who appreciates and likes good dancing swing music. Be sure to check them out--you won't be sorry.
