A-Side only.......2006-03-27
I'd give the B-side one star, it's very lame, but side A is just golden, golden. I dig this so much that it doesn't leave the turn table, it's making all the other records collect dust and grow old. Now don't get me wrong, I am a macho man, many times have I dubbed this onto a tape and mashed to it at the health club, lifting mad wieghts and sweating profusly. I get kinda sad near the end when cool cat tells us "DO YOU DIG MY CHEST? MY THICK MOUSTACHE?" cause I can't grow chest hair and my mustache is weak (people wonder why I haven't shaved my stubble, but it took me 3 weeks to grow that!). If you are a macho man, you will dig this, it will make you want to find the first guy you see and... give him a high five, that is if he is macho. If he is weak and fat, then you will want to pound him, cause he is weak and is edge is not strong! But my edge is the strongest of the strong! I power mosh to this in the morning, then I take a bubble bath and think about how strong the edge is! Oh this LP is so good, I spun it three times in a row when I first heard it, the B-side is weak though! Sodom and Gohmorah is faking the funk, you know the Village People just wrote this cause the label was like "stop looking so gay" and they were like "well I guess a blble song would make us look less gay." I am What I am!
Almost as good as I remember it...........2004-04-15
I can't believe I found this for fifty cents at a flea market recently...at that price, how could I resist? After all, I was the whole of maybe 17 years old when this originally came out and it got played a lot at high school dances.
On the other hand, I didn't remember that the whole affair barely clocked in at more than a half hour, or that the two songs on side one were a little longer than 10 minutes. But for those ten minutes, the glorious bubble-gum disco of "Macho Man/I Am What I Am" completely obliterates the old arguments about disco, and makes a great statement about being who you are, no matter what society tells you. And it's still catchy as all get out.
After that, "Macho Man" is cheesy filler. "Key West" is marginal, but the dopey remake of "Just A Gigalo/Ain't Got Nobody" actually makes you long for David Lee Roth, and "Sodom and Gomorra" is dreadful. I picked this up strictly for nostalgia purposes, and I'm glad I did, because that first 10 minutes takes me back. Causal onlookers can probably be served just as well by "The Millennium Collection" or by any of the dozens of Village People greatest hits collections out there.
Village People is MACHO!!!.......2001-04-28
I love this album and the title song. This will get your heart pumping with this one. Like on American Bandstand, when these guys appeared, it has a nice beat, and is easy to dance to. My sister brought the album home one time, and listened to it like crazy. Village People was and still is the hottest group ever. I would get this album on my wish list. Their costumes are kool. Buy this puppy, and you will never stop listening to it!!!
Just as important as a Village People "Best of" collection!.......2001-04-04
If you are a hardcore Village People fan, then this CD is probably already in your rack. If you're one of those casual Village People fans who think one of the "Greatest Hits" collection will suffice, well... slightly adjust that thought by throwing this piece of work into your shopping cart along with that "Best of" compilation. The song "Macho Man" is enjoyable on its own, and those familiar with its radio play are used to hearing the tune fade away at the end. On this album, the song doesn't really end, but makes a powerful transition into "I Am What I Am." After hearing these tunes connect, "Macho Man" alone is not the same for me! "I Am What I Am" is also, in my opinion, one of those under appreciated Village People songs. While the rendition of "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" does little for me, the rest of this CD jumpstarts my batteries during the sleepiest of mornings. Both "Key West" and "Sodom and Gomorrah" are nice lengthy pieces that are great whether you're dancing, listening closely, or just using as peppy background music during chores or computer games (I often spin this CD while blasting, bombing, and chainsawing evil-doers when I'm playing "Doom"). Trust me on this call; this is a worthwhile buy in addition to the compilations!

Of all forms of electronic music, breakbeat (alongside its cousins, electro and big beat) is the guiltiest pleasure; breaks are a surefire way to any dancer's feet. Mucho Macho is as guilty as the Chemical Brothers or Fatboy Slim at tugging at a listener's most base instincts. There's no highfalutin ideology or smart insider samples, just fat grooves wrapped around infectious, even corny midtempo breaks. Who cares if it's been done before--done better, even--by myriad others when the end result still accomplishes what every dance artist strives for: to make you dance. Heavy doses of hip-hop and funk inform the beats, which recall the pre- Fatboy era of acid-washed synths and erupting builds, bringing you back to the time when happy faces and glow sticks were an anomaly and not the de rigueur raver fashion choice. Ah, memories. --Tricia Romano
Customer Reviews:
Where live playing, loops, and samples merge.......2000-05-14
Mucho Macho have a nice original sound going. It appears that they make actual live drums sounds and then sample them (or maybe not, who can tell these days), along with predominant keyboard loops and usually a sample that becomes the theme of a song. This formula appears on many of the tracks, and works well.
Unfortunately the disc starts off on a bad note, with the mediocre strings and heavy beat of "The Octamed Tapes" which clashes with the vibe of most of the disc. Thankfully the next track is the breakout of the CD, "Rap is Really Changing" which features a high pitch sample and a scaling baseline along with other elements to make this one of the most enjoyable songs of 1999. "the Airport Freeze" has a tambourine-beat and a prominent keyboard throughout, similar to "Lightning" which also features vocal snippets. "Rockley Sands" is another definite hit, a springy number that features again a simple catchy baseline that gets you going with wobbly keys playing over it. "Surrender" has a chunky beat with a couple of keyboard rhythms that contrast well. "Skooby" has a neat sample and a faster bpm but doesn't do much. That also goes for "Hey Charlie," which is followed by the worst track "You will Burn" which is angry squelches to a fast beat- ugh.By now we're away from the fun tracks, and "Backstreet Love" is their only attempt at a typical song, with a moody female singing away; it doesn't really succeed. Finally "Declaration of War" features angry strings, some classic samples, and a pretty good beat.
This isn't a great disc, and the start and especially end are forgettable, but it does has have a good middle (tracks 2-7). If you want a few standout tracks for your personal mix tape or are just itching to buy something you will like this, otherwise you may want to look elsewhere.
A generous 3.......2000-04-08
New electronica should not be so repetetive, and sound-spectrally-limited. There's always a good beat to keep one going, and the hooks are generally solid. Yet I often found myself thinking they stuck with them for just a few too many loops. There are still some inspriring tracks on here, but they scarcely eclipse mediocrity. Backstreet Love is a crime against humanity.

... Easy Living is the smoothest track to cross my ears' path in a long, long time. The soul dripping from Jon Lucien's guest vocals is beyond words. The rest of the CD is... OK. Buy it for Easy Living, and play it loud the next time you're entertaining :-)

Quintessence of Late 70s.......2007-04-22
Is there a word for the muscal equivalent of 'iconic'? Well we sure need one to describe dance music like the A side of this. But then who can be objective about the music of their own dancing days, viewed from a few decades later? OK, it almost palls in the middle of its luxuriant 17 minutes, but just like 'Trans Europ Express' you stay with it because the irresistible chord sequence is going to return and climax with a vengeance. Captures the exuberance of the late 70s, made all the more poignant with hindsight, knowing what the the next decade would bring to many who danced their hearts out to this...
A minor piece of nostalgia.......2007-03-17
With only 3 songs spread out over 35 minutes, this one can be hard to swallow sometimes, but to be honest, reworking "I'm A Man" by The Spencer Davis Group into a 17-minute disco workout was actually a pretty good idea. Next time you're trying to put together a compilation for an old-school dance party, that would probably be a good choice for it.
Real Disco.......2005-02-23
Amazing piece of the real sound of the 70s. For those who still love to dance a retro disco, this is an icon of a generation. Unfortunately Macho & Peter Jacques Band never recorded again togheter but they left a legacy ... I'm a Man
