Erik Wollo's works are overlooked gems of modern instrumental music. From his home in Norway, Wollo's been sending out missives of mood and ambience since the mid-1980s with albums like Silver Beach and Solstice. Last year's U.S. release of Guitar Nova explored the acoustic-guitar side of this musician in multilayered, overdubbed soundscapes that retained the ambience and structure of his electronic works. With Wind Journey, he returns to synthesizers but keeps his electric guitar at hand for some gloriously heroic solos, especially on "Dream Line." A subtle, tugging ostinato pattern builds into layers of keyboard orchestrations topped by guitar, which starts out in a pastoral, acoustic mode but segues into a soaring lead solo that recalls Steve Hackett during his Spectral Mornings era. Wind Journey is centered by Seasons Suite, a 10-part sequence of moody vignettes. Erik Wollo's roots in progressive rock are clear and he uses them to articulate a cinematic music. While Wollo lives in a country with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, he composes much of his music in a basement studio. The worlds he creates are strictly from the imagination, and what a vivid imagination it is. --John Diliberto

Ambient music that takes me far, far away!.......2003-04-24
I have purchased cd in the summer of 2002. Back then, all I could think of doing was listen to 88.5 on the radio and hope that they will play music from Erik Wollo. The first song I heard was "Dream Lines". The music didn't seem familiar to me at first. I didn't consider it really ambient but it turned out that it was. After listening to it, I was into it very much. I never heard such a song played like that before and I knew it was something I would like. Wollo plays the guitar in a way that the sound echoes in my head and makes me feel like Im somewhere far and distant. In a short time, I heard "Wind Journey 1". That was amazing. After I listened to it few more times, I was into it so much that I couldn't help buying it from Amazon.com. Just about every beat and sound seems to echoe as if it was played outside where nothing surrounds you and where the music can travel and be heard. Listen to the samples and decide. Buying this cd is something to consider.
What a surprise and completely different from the last CD.......2001-09-27
The last Eric Wollo CD featured wonderful virtuoso guitar, most closely akin to a "fingerpicking" style. Each piece was different, almost like a "best of" CD. This CD is completely different in that the artist uses the guitar as part of a series of thematic atmospheric tone poems based on the idea of wind and its forms and effects. The overall feel of the music is very ambient, with the guitar used less as a melody-maker, and more as a symphonic, electronic instrument, almost like a timescape. The orchestration includes atmospheric electronic soundscapes within which the artist creates mood music of the highest quality. I was absolutely fascinated by the CD on first hearing it, and it only gets better with each re-playing as I discover new nuances to the music. What a master of the guitar this man is. I highly recommend that you take a listen to this CD, and take a journey into the wind with Mr Wollo. This is a thinking person's delight!!!

Product Description
Aurah's new release 'Etherea Borealis' is a reflection of the merging of their soaring and psychedelic soundscapes with new songs. Originally form Switzerland, both Marc Dold and Judith Martin created Aurah as a musical journal of their quest to experience life's alchemy. Emotional guitar sounds and scintillating vocal arrangements are part of the essence of music that is a s much pop as transcendental and electronic. From producing/remixing Peter Gabriel to Enya for Dold, to scoring the feature film Loving Annabelle and short Never After; Aurah's says: "The creative process is a interesting and unprectable one... We feel Etherea Borealis to be a true refelction of who we are today, knowing that tomorrow a new truth will be born again."

Product Description
Through our years of touring and performing, one of our biggest challenges has been concert programming-finding, rehearsing & presenting works that we and our audiences will find stimulating, enjoyable and entertaining. While we are always on the lookout for larger, substantial works, we inevitably come across smaller pieces that capture our imagination, little gems we feel deserve exposure. We have included these pieces in our performances to give our listeners a respite, a breather from the more challenging works inherent in the wind repertoire. This CD is a collection of some our most-played, most-requested, most-enjoyed shorter works. It is our hope that you will enjoy these pieces as much as we have over the years.
Customer Reviews:
Really Glad I bought this CD.......2006-03-11
I'm just getting into classical music at the tender age of 41 so I'm far from an expert here. Like another reviewer I heard about this CD (which had been nominated for a grammy) on NPR. It sounded interesting so I decided to buy it. And I'm really glad I did! The music is lively & playful in some parts and gentle & soothing in others. It makes perfect background music when I'm working. And the music sounds simply wonderful coming out of my new iPod Hi-Fi!
Excellent!.......2006-02-22
I discovered this work while listening to NPR and could not wait to own it.
A wonderful CD, a MUST HAVE.....my ipod is smiling;-)

Irresistible energy -- traditional music from Québec! The timeless beauty of Québec's dancing and singing traditions harvested by some of its best and brightest. Maudite Moisson ! features a range of traditional songs from Québec and France with lively hints of jazz, blues and world music influences.
Customer Reviews:
It's French, It's Quebec, It's Wonderful Music.......2007-01-05
This group caught my eye on the Richmond, VA folk festival homepage. They are from Quebec, their music is French-canadian Quebecoise but mostly importantly, their music is wonderful! Almost every song on this CD is unique and well produced. If you don't understand French then go to their website and see the translation there--but you really don't need to know French to enjoy the music. This is not just some collection of esoteric folk songs, this group provides an intertaining brand of traditional music while preserving the roots of each song's musical origin. I love the foot tapping beat that accompanies almost every song. The group masterfully blends various folk instruments to include the Hurdy Gurdy.
The group's real talent though is their ability to work together in their play and in their call-and-response harmonies that will have you humming many of their tunes in your head long after you've heard them.
Among my favorites are Grand Pit/Reel a deux tetes, Vive L'amour/Reel a Ti-Zoune, and Cher Amis Buvons
Grand Pit/Reel a deux tetes--This is a great song and if you take the time to understand the lyrics it tells a great story that I seem to recall all too well in one form or another from my childhood in Northern Maine.
Vive L'amour--lively, catchy, and upbeat this is one of those songs your remember and hum to all day long.
Cher Amis Buvon--I can't help to think that this is the quebecoise version of a rap song. It's short and it's just vocals and feet but I found myself trying in vain to sing it myself--so cool.
Also great are Au bord de la Fontaine--sets the tempo for the rest of the CD. Riton/C'est dan Paris--a ballad that just is so well sung that it sends chills through me everytime I hear it.
If you're into Celtic and Folk and want to try a refreashing change of pace and good music check this group out. I have a feeling these guys will be around for quite some time putting out great music.
Vive l'amour / Reel à Ti-Zoune.......2005-10-05
This song is so catchy! I've been humming it all day. These guys are great.
Celtic with a twist!.......2005-08-03
Le Vent du Nord is traditional Quebecois music - that is, Celtic with a certain something that, for me, is the spirit of Quebec. With the traditional foot-tapping accompanying every song, amazing multi-part harmony by well-developed male voices, Maudite Moisson ! is a must for anyone who enjoys music with great rhythm and lots of soul! My particular favorites are tracks 1 (Au Bord de la Fontaine), 5 (Chers Amis Buvons) and 7 (Le Moine Complaisant). Don't let the language stop you! All the songs are well-described in the libretto so that, although you may not understand every word, you understand the spirit behind the sound. This album gets the highest recommendation from this music-lover.
SPIRITUALLY UPLIFTING, TOE-TAPPING, HUMMING ALONG.............2004-08-12
this cd was a surprise to us all this summer....completely engaging for all ages and languages! the spirit of the music is intoxicating. we cant turn it off.
Traditional music with a contemporary feel.......2003-12-17
This is a wonderful record of traditional music from Quebec. The music tends to be upbeat, toe-tapping music, often accompanied by foot-clogging that makes you want to get up and dance. These upbeat numbers are mixed with some beautiful waltzes and laments. Many of the songs also have the traditional Quebecoise call-and-response structure. More often than not the songs have playful, humorous lyrics, contrasting with melodies that sound like they were born of lives of hardship. Other melodies swing or have a lyrical or wistful feel to them. One traditional Quebec lament, about a man who swears off women and retires to a convent, has been given a slow, jazzy guitar and piano accompaniment that wouldn't be out of place in Porgy and Bess. The singing and musicianship on fiddle, accordion, guitar and hurdy-gurdy is great and there is a liveliness and freshness throughout. French song words are provided in the accompanying booklet, along with brief French and English notes on each piece. I have heard this band in concert, and the record captures the fun and energy of their live performances.

Customer Reviews:
Quebec traditional joy.......2007-05-06
Take a fiddle, guitar, hurdy-gurdy, and concertina; add Celtic tuneful dances; mix with New World frontier spirit; flavor with French pride; sing in synchronous harmony; and perform like there is no tomorrow: what you get is a recording to bring smiles. Lively pieces are mixed with quiet reflections. Many of the tracks are based on 18th- and early 19th-century French folk tunes; others originated in French Canadian soil. This is fun music. Enjoy!
The sophmore effort--a little more serious but still very fun!.......2007-03-02
Les Amants was my second Vent du Nord purchase and I found it almost equally as fun as their debut album, Maudite Moisson! The group seems to venture on some songs like Le Retour du Fils Soldat--a moving and emotional song--into more serious ballads but still retain the fun that the first CD offered. Cre Mardi is the most fun song of the whole CD. Anyone hearing it will want to learn french just to sing the responses.
The rest of the music is very good overall. This group seems committed to staying in the traditional vein while bringing new life to old songs--and really isn't that what it's all about with many Celtic/folk groups when replaying traditional music?
Although not as fresh as their debut effort, this CD is still a unique pleasure to listen to. I feel that this group's talent will produce even greater productions here in the future. They play well and sing well toghether--there's chemistry. They are due to release another CD this year and I for one am anxious to make Le Vent du Nord a 3-CD collection when it does.
fabulous concert-can't wait to hear C.D........2006-10-20
I just saw this band in concert last night in Nashville, TN. It was fabulous and can't wait to receive their CD in the mail. If you are a francophile but also love celtic music, this band is right up your alley.
Wow!.......2006-10-16
Just saw these guys live at the National Folk Festival in Richmond, VA in Oct 2006, and they were great! Loved the music even though couldn't understand words. The stand that was selling CD's sold out, so that's why I am on the web looking to buy, I haven't heard this CD and am not sure which one I will get but, good band.

With the release of his third solo album, "A Flying Leap", James continues to "tear up the uke" (AcousticGuitar.net). Seven of the album's ten tracks are genre-bending originals ranging in style from the bluegrass-tinged 'Song for Cheri' to the jazzy 'Fleas My Dog Has' to the remarkable 'One Small Suite for `Ukulele,' an ambitious work in three movements written for `ukulele and string quartet. Also featured is a gorgeous two-uke arrangement of Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing' alongside a swinging take on Chalmers Doane's 'Uke Talk'.
Customer Reviews:
I ADORE this album.......2007-05-12
If I played 'ukulele, I would wish I had written this music. It's rich, fun, full of variety, addictive, and gives contagious energy. Happier tunes you'll never hear; there are also some more thoughtful, even bluesy tracks. It's brilliant.
Very happy music.......2007-03-29
This CD is the product of the writing and playing efforts of a very talented young man. The bottom line is that it is a wonderful collection of happy music. It would be difficult not to smile as one listens to this CD which is a great introduction to Mr. Hill, and what he can do with a ukulele. If you want music to reflect a happy mood, or need music which will bring you such a mood, this CD is for you.

Ceci n'est pas un review.......2005-02-21
Cloud Cult has adapted and modified the indie experimental guitar rock sound of the last decade and crumbled like a phoenix to rise again as a beautiful requiem for the band's founder's two year old son. Cloud Cult uses sparse vocals and understated melodies in contrast with screaming Crazy Horse guitars, Roland beats, and Psychpop. If you like the experimentation of the Flaming Lips, the psychotic ambiguity of Neutral Milk Hotel, the voice of one on the edge of life and death (a la Nowell, Cobain, Joplin), or ambient brilliance, check these sick Minnesotans out.

Don't be shy: go ahead and dance!.......2001-11-13
If there is one thing that Matapat shows in their music, and their live performances, it's that you shouldn't be afraid to express yourself in music and dance! This CD will get you off your feet and dancing down the streets. With an excellent combination of vocals, accordion, guitar, and more, Matapat opens the door of intercultural experience. The music is heavily celtic, and amazing to listen to. I would highly recommend this, not only to people merely looking for good music, but also for students who are interested in learning more about Québec's culture and music. The songs teach a lot about the romantic culture inherited from the French, as well as some traditional Québec stories. Definitely a super selection!
You won't be able to sit still. Just try. You really won't........2001-09-22
This cd always, always, always makes me smile. The tension and balance between melody and rhythm/percussion are perfect. I would recommend not only this cd, but also their new release "Petit Fou" to anybody interested in Quebecois music, or in traditional music in general.
High energy & lots of fun.......2001-01-05
I discovered these guys when I got to see them live last Spring. Their playing is great...really a lot of fun! The energy that they have in performance really carries over onto their CD. It really has become one of my most favorite...I highly recommend it to anyone looking for some good, upbeat Quebecois music.
Starts out great and keeps growing on you.......2000-12-03
I bought this because I was looking for some good Quebecois music. These musicians are very good and the CD is good from start to finish. The whole family loves it and my 16 month old son often insists that we play the CD for him so he can dance. Every time I listen to it, I walk away humming a different tune of theirs. It is well worth having in your musical library and I highly recomend it to anyone interested in traditional Quebecois music.
I also found the liner notes, provided in both French and English, to be very interesting and useful for appreciating the music. Buy many copies of the CD and encourage these guys to make more.
Matapat Wows Cotati Accordion Festival.......2000-08-29
Yesterday I heard Matapat for the first time at the Cotati (California) Accordion Festival. Of all the groups I heard, I was most impressed with Matapat - wonderful, highly musical playing. THeir music is traditional Quebecois folk-based music, featuring bass, accordion, spoons, violin, guitar, mandolin and feet. I watched in amazement as their accordion player, Benoit Borque, led off the first number by starting the song with a rhythmic heel/toe beat (with taps on the shoes) that he kept up throughout that song, and many others, while playing accordion and singing. I've never seen a musical group where the beat was kept with the feet like that. Benoit also came down off the stage to lead people in a traditional circle dance and later I heard someone say that was the first time at the Accordion Festival that someone came down off the stage into the audience to lead them in that kind of dancing.
Matapat sing in French, but fear not, if you don't know French. Their music is so rich, musical and inspired that it transcends language. It's rare that I take such an immediate liking to a new musical group, but Matapat wowed me enough to go backstage and say thanks to the musicians. I highly recommend the CD, which sounds as good as their live performances. In concert yestreday, that great sound was enhanced by their warm rapport with their audience.

Album Description
Get Back Change is a collection of songs that go straight to the heart and touch your soul. Songs that tell stories with truth, conviction and rare soulful beauty. Acclaimed Newfoundland singer-songwriter Ron Hynes has put together an album that may well be his best work, yet!
Customer Reviews:
Ron Hynes is a genius!.......2003-11-28
I recently saw Ron Hynes perform at a club in Newfoundland. He was brilliant. It was just him and a bass player. His songs and singing are unique. I don't think this record does him justice, but it is worth buying just to hear some of his songs. In the future, I hope he'll record something more stripped down and closer in spirit to his live performace I saw.

Album Description
A brilliant new sound on North America's roots music scene. "The Bills" blend musical sophistication with a passion for acoustic folk traditions, and infuse it all with their irresistibly infectious energy. From Victoria, BC on Canada's beautiful west coast comes this group of exceptional musicians, all sharing a common purpose: to play timeless acoustic music with a passionate flair.
"All Day Every Day" is the band's second album and their first for Borealis. The music captured here contains a melange of styles. From old European melodies to the rhythms of Latin America, and from musical coast to musical coast of North America, The Bills have created a kind of sophisticated, down-home music that is all their own.
Produced by Joby Baker and Marc Atkinson.
