Some would argue that 2000 was the year UK garage, or two-step, broke mainstream. Artful Dodger and Craig David became household names in the UK, with sales in the millions and award nominations. The Dreem Teem of Timmy Magic, Mikee B and DJ Spoony brought the funk to UK airwaves with their Radio 1 show. Even America started to pay attention, with MJ Cole infiltrating the jazzy house set and folks like Zed Bias wooing the jungle heads. URB readers chose two-step as "best new genre" in the annual readers poll.

UK Garage: The Album attempts to capture this moment in history by compiling nearly all of last year's big songs, many of which appear on countless other comps. Other than flawless mixing by Steve Canueto, what makes this one interesting is that it does a pretty good job of looking at the entire genre, from the jiggy house-tinged R&B to the roughneck tunes that are now being labeled "breakbeat garage." Disc One is the smooth side, with silky hits like the True Steppers' "Out of Your Mind," which features Posh Spice, the Artful Dodger remix of Sisqo's "Thong Song" and Lonyo's "Summer of Love," which was undoubtedly an anthem for the two-steppers who flocked to the Cypriot island of Aiya Napa for summer vacation.

Disc Two presents garage's dark side, bringing in the jungle influences and kicking out the girls with the pretty voices. DJ Zinc's "138 Trek," ODB' s "Got Your Money" remix and the massive club tune "Dooms Night," by Azzido da Bass, are among the highlights guaranteed to having you shouting "Bo selecta!" as you dance around the living room.

With infectious beats and catchy melodies, Will's debut CD Sanctuary is a wonderful find. His voice has an authentic R&B quality that, combined with a dance background, makes for an effective and radio friendly result. No where is this more obvious than in the second track, "What's going on". Though there are tracks where the fusion of R&B and house starts to sound like a repetitive formula, there are also stand-out tracks where Will shows his versatility as a musician. "Garde La Foi" is such a hard-core dance tune that the listener might think they've already heard it at the club. In "Drowning in Your Eyes" his smooth vocals and melodic tones seem to suggest he could have a future as Seal's heir-apparent. The acoustic version of an earlier dance track "A Girl Named Kate" highlights the strength of Will's voice and a sweet soulful quality that is not as identifiable in earlier tracks where the beat draws the most focus. Cultivating a sound that is outside of the conventional American music genres, Sanctuary has a distinctive European dance music quality. It is a little bit R&B, a little bit pop and a little bit dance - with a resonance of what they call, "garage" music in the U.K.. Will's Sanctuary is a testiment to how not conforming to typical standards can produce exceptional music.

      4 out of 5 stars Two Steps Into the Groove.......2002-08-01

      Two-step (or UK Garage) may have already peaked in popularity a couple years ago, but it's never too late to discover this genre which is essentially a cross between drum-and-bass and house. Ministry of Sound, never to miss a trend, rolls out their own compilation of garage tunes, featuring some names familiar to two-step snobs and casual listeners alike. The predictable names such as Craig David and Artful Dodger appear, but we also get some surprise appearances from ODB, UK chart topper Gabrielle, and, we're not kidding, Sisqo. Sisqo's annoying novelty hit "Thong Song" gets the Artful Dodger treatment, and the result is a remix so good you almost forget how vapid the original version really is. Both discs are well mixed, offering stuttering drum beats and speaker-blowing basslines that are blended with either soulful vocals or rapping. Buy this disc, play it, and get the party started.

      Ministry of Sound have put together a host of the most influential and popular garage tracks of 2000 all on a double album entitled "UK garage the album". This album makes use of the more commercial garage tracks of last year, and less of the underground material, which makes it perfect for those of you who want to see what all the shouting was about in 2000. I promise you that if you like the sound of a hybrid style of music that combines both the smooth vocals of R+B, and the bass and beat of house, then take a listen, you won't be dissapointed.

      Ministry of Sound, prominent UK Label and Superclub, have released a CD comprising of the summers' greatest 2-step bombs, and refuses to dissappoint in every way. This one starts off with "Do You Really Like It?", the greatest UK Garage track made, then procedes to make your a** through 44 tracks of only the best "garriage" as the brits put it. Unlike the UK Garage Ministry of Sound album, this one mixes both the darker, break-step form of Garage, and the silky smooth R n B side of UK Garage, and everything in between. Highly recommended!
