Ibiza Sunset is the second volume in a series of ambient mix discs inspired by rave locations around the world. This edition is derived from one of the two most famous scenes in the world, Ibiza (the other is Goa). Drawing from ambient sounds of 2000 vintage, Rob Da Bank blends ultraclean electronic ambiences laced together with slow-throb grooves. Ibizarre's dreamy "Cap D'es Falco" captures a sensual sunset with its vaguely Latin groove, celesta refrain, and spoken Spanish phrases. Rune Lindbank's "Sondags Beste" effects smooth jazz ambiences without being smarmy, while Cantoma goes into a deep, lush trance groove on "Pan de Jero." The lightweight R&B of "A Man Called Adam" doesn't seem to fit in, despite the Bahian candomblé beat, but it doesn't detract much either before sliding into Cousin Grizzly's swampy dub groove, "Lady Grizelda." Rob Da Bank's mix is pleasing, but doesn't quite have the dramatic arc that would make this a compelling journey instead of just a nice collection. --John Diliberto

more than i bargained for..........2001-08-06

I needed some new sounds for my workstation...Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Scientist...i'd played it all out. My muse Estella had been telling me about the Ibiza mixes for weeks, but i was too busy (stubborn?) to take her advice. I guess i finally got bored enough.

Good thing too. This might be one of my "year's best". You can indeed chill out to these mixes, but producer Rob Da Bank (!!?!) hasn't forgotten that music is for listening as well as dancing and cooling out. It's been a while since i've heard a DJ with such an organic, almost bio-electronic approach. Fragile glockenspiels give way to sensual polyrhythms that vanish into keyboard washes which part to reveal etherial vocals that carry you into a bright and soothing afro-cuban groove....and it never gets cluttered or busy. In fact the effortlessnes path the music travels adds to the thrill of it. The only problem i have with Ibiza Sunset is where i can get more...more...more...

Solid CD that comes dangerously close to..........2006-04-06

... 'light jazz'. Camiel's an artist out of the Netherlands and this is his first album from back in 2002. It actually took a bit of time for it to come up in Amazon, but... here it is! I got into some of his music when checking out various compilations, like Cafe Samba and Jazz Lounge. Since I liked both songs, the next step was to check out the artist.

And this isn't a bad release. "Sunset" starts off rather positively. It actually reminds me a bit of Troubleman's cd, only it's far less electronically twinged. That's followed up with "I'm Ready", where you hear him on guitar, adding a little bit of funk to the sound wihtout the tune being overbearing. But... there wasn't a great deal of adventure in the track. "Follow Her" came afterwards and the music was actually pretty nice, although it was admittedly a bit of a cheesy tune with vocals - that can be a dangerous approach but then again, sometimes that's what made the old Italian bossa soundtracks fun for today (like when you hear the woman say... "You're so groovy"). Other tracks that stood out were "Sintra", "El Alba" and "Eighty Eight". The mood of the cd in general is pretty easy going and low-key. Actually... to be honest... this album reminds me of something more... *mature* fans would listen to when they're driving home from work/listening to the 'soft-jazz' radio stations that play a healthy dosage of David Sanborn. (Yeah, I did a crap job at sugarcoating it, didn't I?) :)

That's it in a nutshell. While this album didn't necessarily grab me, I would still recommend this to anyone that's a fan of light jazz. I think if you're a fan of Praful, you'll be interested in this and if you haven't heard Praful but love this, you might like Praful even more. You may also like a little known guitarist named Lars Bartkuhn. Sometimes I spin his stuff (Treasure Everything), the sound on it may get dated eventually but there's an energy to his music.

Amazing!.......2004-11-23

This is one of my favorite records; if you like lounge, house, bossa nova, soul, R&B and electronica all rolled into 1 then this is your record. Beautiful, honest and touching - listen to "Follow Her" and "I Would", as you're treated to a man's narrative as he details the initial meeting and subsequent hookup with a beautiful woman. Every single track is a treasure. Camiel wrote, arranged and played everything on most of these tracks, and this young talented Dutch artist deftly moves between genres and makes them his own. This is a must-have for any mature DJ or avid music lover!

Inconsistant -- I expected more.......2005-08-29

I'm a CDM and Padilla fan from way back. I pre-ordered this CD as soon as I saw Jose's name on it. Frankly, listening to it was a puzzling experience. There are the trademark Ibiza sunset tunes here (like Electra's "Autumn Love", and Kraak & Smaak's "No Sun In The Sky"), mixed in with some excellent motion picture soundtrack theme songs (like Audio Deluxe's "60 Seconds" and Kargo's "Spirit Theme"). That's great, but it's the "filler" songs that disturb the flow, and make you wonder what Jose (or was it Warner UK?) was thinking.

Examples of the misfits are abundant, especially on CD2. There's no explaining how "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" by Saint Etienne, or Nouvelle Vague's "Teenage Kicks" made the cut here. Both annoying songs. Fortunately CD2 ends in a Padilla "grand slam" with the last 4 songs, including the beautiful "February In England" by Spacebats. But the damage to the senses was done. CD2 is an incoherent grab bag of songs, from Nina Simone's "Here Comes The Sun" (not even a remix!) to the dull and depressing "Speck of Gold" by Afterlife (Cathy Battistessa on downers). CD1, by comparisson, deserves 4 stars, with only "Loaded" by Primal Scream, and "Daydream In Blue" by iMonster weighing it down.

CD3 is even more confused than CD2. There are at least 3 songs here that seem as if they were included by mistake...some horrible mishap in the studio! There's just NO SIGN of the Jose Padilla we know and love in tired songs such as "Boys Don't cry" (Victor Malloy), "Would It Be Impossible" (The Superimposers), or "Circle of Clowns" (Cornucopia)....

On a positive note, the last NINE songs in a row on CD3 are perfection...like a completely different series...all beautiful, slow moving, filmatic songs that drift through your senses. Almost makes you forget the CDs previous sins.

Final word: I'm still disappointed at how rag-tag this compilation is. I truly love many of the songs here, but others are tired "throw aways" that don't belong. Some of them actually ruin the listening experience for me. Trying to please everybody (seems like that was what Padilla was trying to do) has compromised the integrity of this collection.

Better than a spa day.......2004-02-21

First heard this album on a Delta flight. It is so wonderfully calming and soothing without being bland evelator music. I could definitely feel the sun on my face as I floated away to a beach in southern Spain.

this is definitely one of the few chilled out cd that I liked and would recomend this to anyone! check out track 5 born again by corderoy - PURE BLISS! ..just sit back close your eyes and relax is what the whole selection is about!

Balearic Bliss.......2001-03-24

Rob da Bank has managed to put together a quite remarkable set of Balearic chill-out gems. Each seemlessly blending into the next to wrap you up in sunkissed splender. This CD is truely amazing and any fans of the Real Ibiza or Cafe del Mar series' will be very impressed. Danny Tenaglia voted this his favourite chill out CD of 2000. But it NOW.

Whether its from a hard day at the office or just a chilled day at home, everyone needs some time to keep it real and just hang. From the start, with the gulls calling, to the god like voices, Ibiza sunset is a must for all those stressed out people. WIth the influence of the cafe del mar series clearly present, it is easy to recognise that cam took its influence from the master itself. Allthough not quite being able to stick to the guidelines that that cafe del mar sets, its unique and diverse alternate course leaves the listner relaxed and chilled. Best heard on a real hi-fi, the sounds seem to airate out towrds the listner, allthough smaller systems will not jeopordise the overall effect.

TERRIFIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-03-17

The first time I listened to this album, I bought a blood-orange margarita to go and walked around NYC groovin' with my headphones on. Gee, that was last summer, before the world went crazy......when I listen now I immediately mellow out. You cannot go wrong with this one - there are so many great songs and all kinds of moods - it isn't too mellow, not too funky. I just love it!!!
