Moonflowers & Mini-Skirts is a journey through interstellar cool and nova-hot genius via the martini-soaked soundtrack compositions of Peter Thomas. Originally, these travelogues navigated through such diverse '60s and '70s projects as the German television series Babeck and the snow-bunny-bingo film Happening in White. While Thomas is probably best known for the otherworldly, experimental themes of science fiction series Raumpatrouille, this collection is more like a rocket in the pocket of Esquivel and John Barry. In fact, Barry's James Bond influence can be felt like a quake in Thomas's "Black Power," as Donna Summer belts out the title words like Shirley Bassey singing the main theme from Goldfinger. Other audacious sparks include the swinging trumpet nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey on the track "Opium" and the fast-forward punk energy (if punk had been a movement then) of "Rockin' Computer." If anything, rereleasing Peter Thomas's material shows how contemporary electronica bands such as Stereolab and Add N to X are simply discovering trails pioneered 30 years ago. --Michael Woodring

Great overview of one of the 60s most interesting big band composers! If you've never heard thomas before i think this is a great starting point!

Disclosure: I am only rating the Duo concertant and the Studies in English Folk Song on this disc--these selections were taken from the album and published in a compilation for BBC Music. But may I say that this disc is worth a purchase for these pieces alone! As a clarinetist, I can attest that these are outstanding performances. Cohler has excellent tone, and he and the piano consistently have a great balance. The Duo concertant is a delightful piece that is absolutely effervescent. The English Folks Songs are played with extraordinary sensitivity that reveals the genius of Vaughn Williams and the maturity of Cohler. The Folk Songs are so short, but so deep and thoughtful, while being absolutely accessible to even the youngest and most unknowledgeable of listeners. I might even suggest that this would be a good disc to introduce someone to the possibilities of the clarinet.

Moonflowers, Baby is a good recording. It combines some interesting music pieces. The Hindemith is well played, but Mr. Cohler uses too much vibrato for my taste. There are a few gems on this, one of them being the Duo Concertant, by Milhaud. The other piece worth listening too is the title track, Moonflowers, Baby. It is a jazzy little piece that is played very well. It is about 20 minuts long, give or take a few...but it worth the time.
I recommend this c.d. to anyone who is looking for some off-beat but well played music. It isn't my favorite kind of music, but it is a good addition to any collection.

          The Moonflowers was one of the greatest bands the world has ever known, creating a mad blend of psychadelic, folk, jazz, pop, funk, politics, ambient, experimentalism, and the ideals of peace and love to create lovely, beautiful music.

          This album was put together from a few random bits leftover from earlier albums....and it's still pretty good. However, I'd suggest buying it from their own label's page, at Colours and Sounds (for some reason, Amazon.com won't let me put a url into this review...just google search for "Colours and Sounds", you'll see it, and go the mailorder section). They have all of the Moonflowers albums, as well as different side projects and friends...I'd suggest starting with "Colours and Sounds" as an introduction to them, arguably their finest album, and the one for which their new label was named! After that maybe "From Whales to Jupiter". Still, I really reccomend getting into their music....it's free and wonderful, and I hope you enjoy it.
