Breaking the Silence - Koner sounds GREAT on MP3 !.......2007-05-15

Thomas Koner is a respected artist who has
produced several excellent CDs featuring
his unique brand of ambient music. As one
who hunts his music will see, much of his
previous work is VERY expensive. What to do?

I had waited years - hoping in vain that he'd
reissue his perpetually out-of-print material,
(rather than paying the ridiculously high prices
his catalogue commands). The upshot is that I
broke down and subscribed to an MP3 site that has
virtually all of his released albums. I paid a few
dollars for all of it and I'm not sorry I did it - the
quality of the MP3s is great!

IMHO, Koner should simply reissue his music
rather (and get paid for it), rather than play up
to this cult-of-personality nonsense.
Its long overdue.

Outstanding! Koner evolves..........2004-02-20

I have five or six of Thomas Koner's albums and am a big fan. I think that this work was an obvious progression from his more subterranean minimalism. Don't get me wrong: this is still very minimal, but the addition of some environmental sounds flushes out what is obviously one of the "lighter" Koner outings. I listen to his stuff at work on some noise canceling headphones and he really creates amazing soundscapes. If you like the darker, dronier side of ambient music I can't recommend this 2XCD set enough! Get this while/where you can as it will obviously be a collectors item as soon as it goes out of print and command big $$$ on eBay like his previous releases.

This "experiment" is nothing like the earlier (better) releases. The processed gongs were relaxing and meditative..This CD has cheesy sound effects called "field recordings" (static, birds chirping etc) which are really annoying and distracting. This CD sounds more like a desperate attempt to sound new and different..and totally blowing it.. I 'll never buy another CD by Koner without listening to it first. Too bad..save your money.

A Breakthrough For Köner.......2003-07-21

This must be the first time I hear sound sources other than his famous processed gongs on a proper album of his. The trademark drones are still there, but this time they are mixed with field recordings - yes, FIELD RECORDINGS of birds, crickets, wind, water, static buzzes, urban noises etc. which sometimes completely take over. The result is not unlike playing 'Permafrost' and any Eric La Casa disc simultaneously. The first CD is a single, involving 60-minute piece entitled 'Une Topographie Sonore : Col de Vence' and features mostly natural sounds, while the second disc contains 4 shorter tracks of various live recordings and installations. I know this diversification of sound sources would probably push him into the same league as La Casa or even Etant Donnes (the whispering in French helps), but heck, the presence of the clouds of tones does retain the ability to engulf the listener as in his best previous works, only now enhanced by the concrete sounds.

A vast improvement from the last release 'Daikan', this has the potential of becoming my favourite Köner piece.
