Traces of trance's trippy trails can be found on Deep Dish's mix CD Yoshiesque, albeit slowed down to a more manageable BPM. The Washington, D.C.-based duo Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia and Sharam Yayebi display their distinctive sound (an odd amalgamation of trance, techno, and poppy house that is truly weird) on this two-disc set, featuring tracks from artists as diverse as Underworld (Rob Rives and Francois Kevorkian mix), Lo Fidelity Allstars, and N'Dea Davenport. Hints of the duo's early collaborations with epic house producer BT, a.k.a. Brian Transeau, are many--tracks extend themselves, stretching out their symphonic limbs over bumpy bass lines and pleasant, willowy vocals. But the key to Deep Dish is their overriding funky feel--something that is often sterilized out of typical trance or mainstream house. --Tricia Romano

1 out of 5 stars One good song.......2007-01-08

I only bought this cd for the song "Under the Water" that is unavailable anywhere else. The rest of the cd is dull and will most likely give you a headache after listening to three songs.

5 out of 5 stars Progressive House At Its Best.......2005-08-28

Simply One Of The Best Progressive House Compilations. Some of the most soughted out DJs of our time. A neat duo of Iranian-American, US based duo is yet to be a superstar. Electronic music is yet to be discovered by many. Great Electro Sound Put With Soothing Vocals! It also contains a state of Trance, which makes me love it more! You Should also check out Volume 2, which is a tad bit better, yet nonetheless, Deep Dish are one of my favorite remixers. Great For Listening To Anywhere In The World (whether at home or in the car)! This is some of the best "stuff" to chill to.

4 out of 5 stars classic.......2004-11-25

I keep on coming back to this set even though many others from 1999 are bypassed. I can't quite define why this is way above the rest.
One has to have it as part of a collection.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2003-11-14

This is like one of the best sets i have ever heard after hearing this set I wanted to say that Deep Dish could be the world's best but then again maybe its just me! I really dont know what to say but this is my kind of music! This cd is my best its up there with Hong Kong by Digweed even though the music is a bit different! I end up listening to the first disc more then second cause i guess it is more laid back and that is how i am laid back! The second disc is more hyped I lisin to it when i am in a very good mood thats when it works the best! I would recomend this set to anyone that likes house and pro house! So just lisin to the samples and buy the sets its a special one!!!

4 out of 5 stars very smooth and very nice.......2003-02-08

Hi all!! Well I was at the record store the other day and I picked this bad boy up thinking I've gotta give this a try. I'm impressed. If you like house music you will like this. Compared with Tenaglia, Deep Dish tend to be more accessible with less of a tribal sound and more vocals. At first, I wasn't sure how much I would like this album because this clearly flashes back to some oldies such as Fluke 'Slid' and Culture Club's 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?' However, the mix does come off well.

Disc one starts of with Atmosfear and continues on with a great and eclectic set of classy house with a good measure of vocals done just right. For me, I like this best, because I feel that it takes the groove that has been built and extends it to new highs with the vocals. The only exception, is the 'Mohammad is Jesus' song which I philisophically disagree with as I am Christian. Mohammad is not Jesus. Jesus is God! Overall the disc is excellent and I give it 4.5 stars.

Disc two starts off great with the Lo-Fidelity All Stars but then stutters with track 2, 5, and 9. Overall, this disc doesn't flow as well as the first because it adds elements of the progressive house and old school trance that don't blend as well. After repeated listening, though, the effect is to really highlight the truly sensational tracks captured here. Overall 4.0 stars.

So if you like Deep Dish this is a true classic circa 1999 that won't dissapoint. Cheers and happy listening!! rock the vote;}

I had this cd for a week now, and when I listen to it while driving down the highway, I find myself driving faster , track 5 of the 1st of the 2 discs is my favorite!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Deep House.......1999-10-20

Deep Dish deliver an excellently mixed collection of deep, dubby house. On this set, they expertly incorporate european influences into their trademark sound.

5 out of 5 stars A new Benchmark for mix CDs........1999-10-07

OK you're reading this so you're a fan of dance music. If you have any experience of DJ mixed compilation CDs, then you've probably picked up a duff title or two in your time.

Not so with Dubfire and Sharam's latest offering. These guys are held in high esteem in the UK and Ireland for their ability to fill dancefloors while sticking to their own instantly recognisable brand of down and dirty house. When you hear tracks as diverse as Brother Brown's 'Under the Water' and Basco's Music With a Feel', you'll understand why.

Both CD's are exceptionally well mixed and build from a nice slow tempo to the sort of tunes you'd like to be dancing to at home after a long night sweating it out on the dancefloor of your favourite house club.

If this mix doesn't end up on best of '99 lists wherever it's heard, then I'll eat my keyboard. Deep by name, deep by nature. Don't think, just buy.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Chill Harmony.......2003-11-05

I've been listening to this all day, and it's the first album i've been able to sleep to listening because of it's chill beats and sounds. Without a lot of unnecessary noise and clatter, this album makes for great background noise, keeping a steady pace from the beginning to end tracks.

I probably wouldn't drive around listening to his, and I can't dance to this, but I've enjoyed the subtle color it's added to my mood today.

5 out of 5 stars deep intelligent sound - what one should expect from DD.......2002-09-25

Yoshiesque 2 is the best mix album of 2001. I was a little disappointed with GU 21-Moscow because it doesn't portray the real talent of the DC duo. Yoshiesque is not as progressive nor anthem-based, and sounds much more Deep Dish-like. I agree with most reviewers that disc 2 is superior. But I also like the first CD - it is more relaxed, chill-out, melodic, kind of deep house, not bad, just a differen mood. Great for listening in the car on my way back from a night of dancing in a club. My favorite track on this disc is Lovely-Johnny Fiasco's Lovely Vocal Remix.
Disc 2 (Eastcoast) is more of an energetic club mix but it also sounds pretty deep, and you can't mistake it for anything else - it's Deep Dish! The 'Eastcoast' CD starts with the excellent track - Finally - a big hit in clubland last summer (2001). Track 4 is an awesome remix of Disted - Always Remember to Respect + Honor Your Mother, and is a tribue to Danny Tenaglia by Deep Dish. Another one of my favorite tracks is Afrika by Oliver Lieb which slows down the tempo a little, then the set goes deeper with John Creamer's and Stephane K's 'Wish You were Here'(Also found on GU 21), and then explodes again with the great Deep Dish remix of Delirium's Innocente - one of their best remixes that just makes me wanna dance!
Overall 5 stars - Yoshiesque is everything a mixed album should be - it takes the listener on a journey and never gets boring. Did I mention that the mixing is flawless? Hopefully Deep Dish will deliver more mixes of such great quality in the near future.

4 out of 5 stars More Trance, Less House, but Still All Good........2002-08-09

Instead of repeating the winning formula of "Yoshiesque," Deep Dish return with a solid Volume 2 that differs in mood and flavor. The tempo is a bit faster, and we get more trance than house this time around. Disc One didn't appeal to me at first, but it succeeds by the excellent mixing and melange of diverse grooves featuring the mid-tempo beats of Chemical Brothers to other upbeat, energetic house grooves with a dash of techno. Give it a couple of listens, and it will grow on you. Disc Two (which, like Disc 1, is 78 minutes) is more my flavor, with more traditional house numbers and less trance. Standouts include the opener "Finally" by Kings of Tomorrow and Morel's "Funny Car." Sequels may have a reputation of disappointing, but Volume 2 is a smart step forward for the remixing duo of Dubfire and Sharam. In my school of music, this CD gets a B.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Dish shows why they're one of the top DJs in America.......2002-06-06

Let me start off by saying that I was not immediately taken by this CD set. I started off by listening to disc 1 (called Westcoast). For what it is, it is a very good mix of chill-out house music which would be perfect for the drive home from a long night of partying. However, some of the tunes can tend to wear out their welcome and can sometimes lead me to reach for the skip button. I quickly moved on to CD 2 (Eastcoast). This is where you'll find your hard-earned money was well spent. This, in my opinion, is one of the, if not the best mix of progressive house and trance I have ever heard. Deep Dish shows you how being a DJ is not just about being able to mix two tracks together (which they happen to so superbly), but to take the listener on a journey. This CD not just should be, but DEMANDS to be listened to from beginning to end with no pauses or skips. To do it any other way would be like taking a quote out of the context of a conversation, it doesn't have the same meaning. The journey begins at the most minimial level, with the stunningly soothing vocal of Julie McKnight singing King's of Tomorrow's "Finally". The atmosphere builds through some driving progressive house to a beautifully trippy remix of Dusted's "Always Remember to Respect & Honour Your Mother" to the peak explosiveness of Greed's "Strangeworld" where the powerful sub-bass hits you like a freight train. Things level off with the bleepy apocalyptic mixes of "Afrika" and "I Wish You Were Here". Leigh Nash of Sixpence None The Richer never sounded so good as her sample on "Innocente" and Morel and Espiritu lend the perfect come-down to this heavenly mix. Throughout the mix is a liberal use of sub-bass patterns (my personal favorite) which lend a feeling of power to even the most meek tune. This CD grips you and doesn't let go, taking you from blissed out house, through tripped out progessive madness to full-on club-shaking trance and back again. Make sure you have a good hour to yourself before starting this CD because it deserves your undivided attention.

      4 out of 5 stars Chill... chill............2002-02-02

So Deep Dish is always pulling out some original stuff... this is no exception. Great album to just relax to before or after a club. They throw some awesome jazz-funk into a few songs on disc 1 which is a nice change from the traditional electric accompaniment of trance.... all in all a great album... probably does not top their recently released GU-Moscow... disc 1 rocks from beginning to end.
