While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin

If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.

This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

    I hear the song, "This Gift", on the radio a lot every Christmas and love it so much so I tried to find the album at the stores for the past couple years but couldn't find it. I was ecstatic when I finally found it at amazon.com, accidentally, at the time I was purchasing Nick's new album, What's Left of Me. Thank you guys; I'm one happy gal now and definitely a customer for life!

    The album is amazing. I can't stop listening to it even in May and June. The blending of their soulful voices is so pleasing to the senses and one can't deny Nick's talent. I personally prefer listening to the classic Christmas songs but once I heard this group's style and harmony, I was hooked and love their voices.

    I love Nick's solo albums and I would like more songs from him, but I would also like to see 98 Degrees reunite and make beautiful and soulful songs once again.

    BOCA 97-98 really is an amazing compilation. If you like a cappella then this is the CD for you. My personal favorites include "Secure Yourself", "Love is a Battlefield", and "Wanting Memories", but even if your taste in music is completely different than mine you'll still find something on here you like. Buy it today!

          This compilation totally rocks the casbah!!! I first heard this cd while working in a pub in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was my absolute favourite. It starts off with "The Ballad of Tom Jones" featuring Space and Catatonia's Cerys Matthews. It has to be one of the most creative songs I've ever heard. Lovers on the brink of killing each other, but are saved by the Tom Jones' Greatest Hits cd! It's absolutely hilarious. Then it goes on to a Catatonia song " Mulder and Scully", just absolutely original. A great start to an absolutely captivating cd. It mixes the likes of Iggy Pop's "Passenger" with "Firestarter" by Prodigy. From "Brimful of Asha" (everbody needs a bossom for a pillow) to "Karma Police" by Radiohead. A lot of these songs you wouldn't know if you weren't familiar with the UK music scene (Common People, by Pulp) of 1998, but it is great to become aware of the different tastes that made up an interesting year. Now I have to admit, the second cd, and this is just my opinion, isn't as great as the first. Maybe b/c I'm not totally familiar with the music, I don't know. BUT, nevertheless, it holds it's own. It was a favourite with the customers as well as the employees. SO if you need to pick up a cd that makes a good conversation piece, or just a good party cd, then this is the one for you. You won't be disappointed!!!!

            The AOR/melodic rock band Takara is one of many bands to feature the talented Jeff Scott Soto (Eyes, Talisman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Axel Rudi Pell, Soul SirkUS, and for a few weeks Journey) on vocals. Oddly enough for a band started in 1993, Takara rocks like the whole grunge scene never happened and melodic rock is forever king. Their whole sound is a warm embrace of bands like Journey, Foreigner and Bad Company.

            Released in 2004, Eternity - the Best of 93-98 provides a nice overview of what Takara's sound is all about. The disc is packed full of 16 tracks spanning the band's three studio albums - Eternal Faith, Taste Of Heaven, and Blind in Paradise - and also includes a pair of acoustic tracks for a total of 18 songs. That's a heck of a value for a "best of" compilation.

            If you're at all familiar with Soto's previous work, you know that any project he's involved with (save perhaps the Biker Mice from Mars soundtrack) is well worth checking out, and a compilation like Eternity is a great way to sample his work with Takara.
