    5 out of 5 stars "Sit back...and we'll pour you a drink!".......2007-05-07

Welcome, tired and weary shopper, to the innermost sanctoms of rock and roll. Put your feet up, and let Anton and his wandering retinue of minstrels delight your senses with the greatest rock and roll album made in the lat 20 years. The Morning After Girls, The High Dials, and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are the titans of today's rock movement. But even these elite few worship at the feet of this venerable sage. There can be no comparison, ye, for this is art of the highest caliber!

5 out of 5 stars this is the best BJM record.......2006-09-19

All of BJM's records are excellent but this one is my favorite. The songs are memorable, dreamy, evocative. The mood is a bit somber, and the production appropriately moody. This one tends to favor acoustics a bit over electrics, and has a less hard-rocking sounds than Give it Back or some of the others, but each song is a gem. There is no filler, there are no mediocre tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Mutton Chops Forever.......2006-07-01

This album could possibly be one of the best pieces of contempory art in the United States. Listening to the music conjures images of Jack Kerouac, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Undergound, yet the music is strikingly original. Mutton chops forever.

5 out of 5 stars Cool as God.......2006-06-04

This band doesn't ride the waves of the many pathetic and short-lived musical fads that have dominated the last 15 years of mainstream music. And it is this rejection of the increasingly parasitic mainstream musical culture that will leave this band's music strong and unwavering against the relentless wind of time and change. Forget your fast food, quick fix band's like `Jet'; this is the Brian Jonestown Massacre! Bravery, Repetition and Noise contains some of the bands strongest work. Some of these songs you simply cannot explain in words. It is not derivative in any sense...it is an absolutely original take on modern music. Nevertheless is a near pefect song, as are many on this album. Telegram is another highlight...but the listener must listen and experience this album. It is more than a collection of songs. It is a body of beautiful sound and must be experienced in the same way that an informed listener may experience something like 'Abbey Road' or 'Magical Mystery Tour', except this is better.

    5 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-05-16

This album is amazing. I hadn't heard of this group until recently, so I bought this along with DIG! Most of the songs are really catchy; for example, just for today, telegram, open heart, nevertheless, sailor, you have been disconnected, & leave nothing for sancho. They're all fantastic.

Unwound's fifth record is yet another masterpiece of perfectly sculpted aural chaos. The rhythm section creates sublimely looping, mesmerizing rhythms for guitarist/vocalist Justin Trosper to scrape his guitar across in jagged slashes or deliberate, well-placed riffs. As with Sonic Youth, the rhythm section is the musical anchor. Bassist Vern Rumsey and drummer Sara Lund are the band's unsung heroes, and together they create a hospitable musical atmosphere for Trosper's unique guitar attack. But what makes Unwound (again, like Sonic Youth) so immeasurably great is their ability to mix sly, subtle melody into their rather amelodic songforms. Repetition is as varied as anything Unwound has previously done, incorporating keyboards, saxophone, and even a dub tune, and it certainly moves this amazing trio a step closer to their destiny as Sonic Youth's West Coast equals. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff methinks.......2007-04-09

This CD was randomly lent to me by one of my friends. I didn't really get it at first, but eventually, I suppose that it grew on me and I always find myself returning to those half-lucid, half-insane tunes.

Listening to it as an album provides certain rewards and displays the definate presence of a flow from song to song, but the songs can be listened to as individual entities as well. Corpse Pose and Repition are, at least for me, the stand-out tracks, while other tracks like Finger Nails on the Chalkboard are a tad annoying when listened to intently (they don't really say anything except those few words), even though I personally do like that track very much.

Overall, I got into this band when I certainly was not ready to listen to similar music. This band for me stands out as unique in some way or other and suggest that all who want to listen to some musically adept and well arranged music to listen to this. Good times.

5 out of 5 stars one of unwounds best.......2002-11-16

If i could describe this cd in one word, it would be dark. Compared to Unwounds other releases, this cd is more mellan cholly for them. Its great though. Unwound is such a good band. Every aspect of them is great. Justin is one of the best guitar players/singers around, Sara Lind is definately one of the best drummers around, and vern rumsey is one amazing bassist(he has a side project out now called "red rumsey"). I could go on and on talking about how each one is one of the greatest musicians around. The guitars and vocals blend perfectly together on this cd, a good example of this is on track two. This cd is not as heavy as "future of what," and its not as upbeat as "challenge for a civilized society." Its a great blend, but it has a sound of its own. Lady Elect is the greatest song in the world. If i hated the whole cd, and only liked that song, that song is so good, i would buy the cd just for that song. But thats not the case with this cd, every song is great. This cd is more focused on music than vocals comparing to "challenge for a civilized society." if you like unwound, check out the bands Q and not U, and you will know us by the trail of dead, fugazi, hella, and red rumsey.

    3 out of 5 stars Practical Advice.......2002-08-13

I love Unwound and I love this albumn, but if you're new to this band, this is not a good place to start. Hear NEW PLASTIC IDEAS, MK ULTRA, FAKE TRAIN, and LEAVES TURN INSIDE YOU to discover what Unwound was really all about. Find your way to REPITITION from there.

Of course anything by Unwound (especially after Sara took over drums) is an essential piece of noise-core history that will stay in your present tense.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......1999-10-10

If you like music then do yourself and get this cd because it rocks and it will get you chicks

5 out of 5 stars This album is one part of the music bible of the 20th C.......1999-09-08

I heard this album about 2 years ago and I have been in love with it ever since. The album is pure genius. Everything from the snare rattles during the bass parts, to the incredibility of the chorus lead line in Corps Pose, is pure musical genius. The songs on this album have had such an immense impact on me that I can't even describe why. Justin Troper is easily one of the most creative guitarists around. The chords and the riffs that he has written are truly mind boggeling, purely because they don't sound like the type of riffs that you would play on a guitar.Amazingly origional. Being a drummer myself, I can honestly say, without any sexism intended, that there is not a great amount of impressive female drummers around, but the drummer from this band (who is female incase you didn't know) is absolutley incredible. This opinion is purely bassed on her creativity and origionality, there is something so incredible and inspiring about her drumming, but that is also another thing that I just cannot put my finger on. With regards to the Bass lines all I can say is that they cosist of simplicity at its best. This dude is also a musical genius. All in all, an absolutley amazing and truley inspiring band.Ther is something about them that just cannot be described with words. Hear them for yourselves and then make up your own mind.

      4 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2000-12-18

I heard this playing in a local independent record shop and immediately became transfixed by its mesmerizing sound. Everyone in the shop was grooving to these most excellent tunes. I bought it right away and was not disappointed. The production is marvelous, evoking that vacuum-packed wall-of-sound Phil Specter perfected in the 60's. Although it sounds retro, this music is far more interesting to me than what bands like the Apples in Stereo are currently doing. It sports some of the best use of organ that I've heard in a long while. This music is addictive. Enjoyed it so much I picked up "Strung Out in Heaven" which is also excellent - though a bit more stripped down in sound and without the multi-tracked, echoey vocals. If you enjoy The Dandy Warhols and itch for something a bit more raw and unpolished, I recommend this. I'm kicking myself, because I just moved from San Francisco and recall that this band often play there.

      4 out of 5 stars Four+ stars.......2003-06-02

This one did it for me on second listen. Trancelike, sursurrant energies are all in place. I trust anyone (I suppose) who's worked well with M. Gira, of Swans. He and Dan Matz have collaborated on WHAT WE DID, which is more song-oriented but also atmospheric.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Trance Rock.......2003-05-27

Subtle guitar lines weave around each other while plain but honest vocals feature more prominently than before. This cd has a very medieval feel to the melodies and production; it almost sounds like the soundtrack to the Renaissance Faire, if the Ren Faire were set in the dark ages instead of "mythic high fantasy..."

Songs like dirges, the repetition of notes and patterns is definitely featured, as the title suggests. This album opens up with each listen, determined to become more complex every time you hear it.

4 out of 5 stars acoustic guitar minimalism.......2003-04-18

This release will appeal to anyone who appreciates quiet guitar-driven music. Overall this is an ambient album on the verge of being minimal rock. It brings to mind Joy Division/early New Order, Labradford, Brian Eno, Stars of the Lid and Erik Satie. The music itself is very repetitive and entrancing. Highly recommended to listeners who appreciate any of the aforementioned artists/bands.

      5 out of 5 stars absolutely beatiful.......2001-10-04

this cd is absolutely beautiful. this is music that seems to 'touch' you, a quality a band like spiritualized once had before they got commercialized. the titel reflects the music really well: there is, indeed, much repetition on this cd, but yet, underneath it, there are also subtle differences. it's like floating on an ocean on a beatiful day. it's like laying in the grass and looking at the clouds floating by. it's like staying home to watch the rain. this is really really so beatiful. for those of you who like for instance hood or bedhead - wftd is more or less the same kind of band only much, much better. gira knows good music when he hears it!

      5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2000-03-07

This is one of those albums that opens up and gets better and better every listen. Subtle and hypnotizing. If you enjoy instrumental post rock sort of music, you will love this.
