This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

My Favorite SOS Album of All Time..........2007-05-11

Love this cd ! It is one that I play more often than any of their other releases. This one is soulfully consistent and just has a deep groove and vibe througout. Whether you want to classify this as pre-neo soul or an homage to 70's soul, SOS does not miss a beat.Could lead singer Corinne Drewery's vocals be more bluesy and soulful? Sure. However, she has never claimed to be a blues or soul singer; Her vocals still possess the finesse to go either way(pop or R&B) without alienating fans of either musical genres... A couple of tracks,including one instrumental, have a 70's-Isaac Hayes "Shaft" atmosphere! Not a single minute on this cd is fodder or filler. This one receives high marks.

I just got this CD at the start of the year and it's my new favorite. It's just timeless northern soul, downtempo, and soulful strut.

Gorgeous! And it's on Internet jukebox, so you can play some select favorites while you shoot pool or down a few ales at your favorite watering hole. trust me, people will go up to the machine to figure out who's rocking the joint with this masterful mix of soul, stylin' dance and penthouse pop. My God, Corrine never sounded better than she does on this one. Her voice soars and hits bullseye after bullseye. Sweetspot redux!
This should be in every home and should be studied at an academic level by musicologists worldwide--ok that's a bit much, but trust me, you won't be sorry.

Strong mix of 70s sound, modern production.......2006-01-19

With few exceptions, Swing Out Sister can tackle any style of jazz-pop with credibility. This 1992 set proves that the act can lift elements of Seventies soul and make them their own.

Corinne Drewery is in fine voice, as usual -- think your favorite cabaret singer meets Diana Ross -- especially on "Notgonnachange" and "Incomplete Without You." And the title track, a tough rebuke to a wayward lover, is one of Swing Out Sister's best songs.

It helps that Drewery and keyboardist Andy Connell -- and the duo's longtime collaborator, producer Paul O'Duffy -- are again joined by some of the best musicians in British pop. That includes the "Henpecked Horns" -- sax player Gary Barnacle and trumpeter John Thirkell. Thirkell's jazzy, brilliant solo in "Understand" may be even than his tour-de-force on SOS's "Surrender" off the group's 1987 debut.

Tasteful, first-class music, just what fans have expected from Swing Out Sister for nearly 20 years.

This is a great CD, the kind of music from SOS that their fans have come to love & expect. There are great uptempo, cool, jazzy tunes on this CD. If you only get one SOS cd, make it this one.

It is wonderful to have Ms. Demby move away from the atonal and morbid sounds of Attunement and Spirit Trance to the uplifting sounds she gave us in Novus Magnificat and Set Free. This is definitely one of her best works.

A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

this record....is amazing. as time goes by, and millions of bands come and go, there are few that had the strength and power of tar (did it come from the shiny metal guitars?). being a tar fan for a loooong time, it's funny that i keep coming back to this album, even more so than their genius "jackson." whenever i see it used anywhere, i hope that the person who sold it was unfortunate enough to have needed the dough very badly...and used it to buy food. otherwise, how could you!?!

Very sick. I was blown away by this album the first time through. If you're into Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Slint, or the more recent but curiously underrated Giddy Motors, etc. you should probably already know that you'll love this album (which is not to minimize in any way the surprising variety or unique way that Tar approaches the Chicago post-hardcore sound, a sound I love more and more with each successive discovery). If you're new to Touch and Go however, this album is just more inventive, far more interestingly produced, and many times more honest than all the "hard rock" most people listen to on FM radio. And it just kicks @$$. Fantastic!

Tar has always been one of my favorite bands, and this last effort was their most solid of their Touch and Go years. It has the bright crisp sound and production I loved them for, but shows diversity in tone, feel and rhythym. Many lyrics (and the title) hint that this was their parting shot, and though there's a lot of different sounds on this record (especially for Tar), it sticks together as a unit perfectly. This and Jackson on AmRep are their 2 5 star albums. Great token guest vocals from Al from Shorty/US Maple to boot.

Tar we miss ye! Tar saves the best for last with this release. While great albums like "Jackson" and "Toast" smacked you around with Tars powerful guitar attack, "Over & Out" has a more cerebral approach ala Sonic Youth but still keep their unique sound intact. Every track on this album is a winner. Buy it!

"Over and Out" is the final stroke of genius from one of North America's most under-rated "rock" bands. Tar's music is loud and beautiful ... subtle and chaotic ... all in one song. Never mind what you know about Helmet, Jesus Lizard, Big Black or any of the other bands you associate with AmRep or the Chicago sound. This is the stuff! Exquisite pop/guitar/noise from four regular guys like you and me. Ahhhhh ... (if you can, dig back and check out the "Roundhouse", "Jackson" and "Toast" albums as well) ... enjoy.

Perfect

I found this CD in chicago, where this brit now lives, and the tunes and themes are such a retrieval cue for sunday afternoons watching these old stiff upper lip black and white movies on tv. Just what I needed, although the addition of 4 weddings is slightly odd. Good quality recordings...:-)

I felt it was strange why "Reach Out & Touch" was left out from the other release of Diana Ross' The Best Of...Love & Life (2CD).
"Reach Out & Touch (Somebody's hand)" has been an anthem for Miss Ross for years.
This collection covers some of her best recordings but many more are left out. I still don't understand why the label included "Touch by Touch" & "Eaten Alive" ?? Where is "Touch Me In The Morning"?
Anyway, I would still recommend the other double CD titled "Love & Life. The Very Best Of Diana Ross".
