Julia Stiles (The Devil's Own) and Sean Patrick Thomas (Cruel Intentions) star in this romantic musical drama about an interracial couple drawn past cultural barriers and united by music and dance. The soundtrack has no shortage of notable R&B and hip-hop performers. However, as the title Save the Last Dance implies, this is primarily a platform for the art of the slow dance. Rappers Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and the late Notorious B.I.G. (featured as part of 112's track, "Only You") represent the harder end of the spectrum (however, Snoop is paired with Q-Tip and Lucy Pearl for a smoother ride than usual). But the dramatic shuffle of the soundtrack's first single, K-Ci & Jo-Jo's "Crazy," represents the best of what's offered here. Pink's playful "You Make Me Sick" and Donnell Jones's "U Know What's Up" are among the other tuneful highlights. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Good, but missing song on song list:(.......2007-03-20

The song breath & stop by q-tip is NOT on the cd:( which probably would have been the best song on there. But other than that, pretty good fast, dance songs. Good movie, i'm from chicago, so it was nice to see the train i used to ride to work and other chicago sites. Good movie, i bought and have watched it over 5 times.

5 out of 5 stars Great dance movie!.......2007-03-18

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Finish.......2005-06-03

I love this Cd. It's one of my top 10 favorite CDs in my collection of over 600. Every song is great, and i think i'll always own this CD. The reason i entitled this review "A Perfect Finish" is because this is the last decent Warped Tour comp that has been released to date, and none will ever top it.

5 out of 5 stars Warped.......2002-08-27

I don't know why everyone doesn't like this CD. The songs are all unreleased and awsome. Greatest punk bands. Best songs: Rancid-Sick Sick World
Anti Flag-Don't give up
AFI- A Winter's Tale
Vandals-SWM
Mighty Mighty Bosstones-Providence is... (this should go on their next cd!)
Casualties-Fight For Your Life! (Saw them at the warped tour, fans went crazy over this one!)

Also check out the new 2002 one

4 out of 5 stars AFI owns this comp.......2002-08-19

Well I have to say that AFI made this comp worth buying. A Winters Tale incorporates everything about AFI that is great. Tsunami Bomb also has a strong showing and Bigwig had an awesome song. Rancids effort was sub par but they make up for it in their real albums

5 out of 5 stars This CD is almost as good as the real thing!!.......2002-03-09

I went to warped tour last summer, and saw most of these bands, and loved them, and loved the cd almost as much, but in the last few weeks I have totally fallen in love with the ataris song on this album...the recording quality sucks, but it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life...it is worth buying just for this and the new found glory song, but all of them are great!

i think punk rock is awesome. this cd has a few good punk songs but u could listen 2 a lot of it buy it u wont regret it but it is not as good as the first 5

5 out of 5 stars this cd got me into punk.......2004-03-08

when i looked at this cd on the cd rack, it was only 5 bucks so i bought just for the hell of it. so one day i put in that cd and i was blown away. songs like blackeye, can i borrow some ambition, bath of last resistance, true believers, coming down with me are all great. I LOVE THIS CD. ITS WORTH IT TO BUY IT.

5 out of 5 stars Punk-O-Rama.....Enough Said.......2003-10-18

This was the first Punk-O-Rama CD I listened to, and boy I was not dissapointed. Most of the songs on this CD are the type of punk I would listen to, Quite fast and energetic. The best song on the CD has to be either NOFX - Bath of Least Resistance (NOFX being the greatest punk band of all time, of course), or Beatsteaks - Let me in. I heard the Beatsteaks for the first time on this CD and there absolutely bloody excellent. Obviously, The Cd is made complete with songs from the Descendents, Pulley, Pennywise, Dropkick Murphy's. The only let down on this CD is Noise Conspiracy, there song on this CD, well plainly sucks i'm sorry to say. But overall this CD is one hell of a good listen if your into punk. That's all, oh yeah, buy it! bye

5 out of 5 stars turned me on to punk!.......2003-03-11

This CD is great. One of my punk friends told me to try the punk-o-rama series if i wanted to get into punk. This was the only one they had at the store so i got it and it is fantastic! It starts of really great with guttermouth, then it doesnt slow down till the end. i really love "bath of leaste resistance," and "the gauntlet." anyone whos interested in getting into punk or likes good music should buy this cd... the punk-o-rama dvd is great too!

4 out of 5 stars cd....that it is........2002-05-03

at of all the punk-o-ramas i have.....this is not the best one. i do like it alot though. its got some great bands like PENNYWISE, deviates, guttermouth, nofx, dbs, etc...the best song on this album undoubtedly is 'the gauntlet' by the dropkick murphys. the reason i actually wrote this review...is not because this is a great cd, but because of someone else who reviewed this cd. joe from minnesota wrote a review from this cd...and stated "such as 60 dollars on a burning bridge's 'death by stereo' and whatnot". that really made me mad. death by stereo is the band! not the song! dbs is one of my favorite bands out there, and if you dont know that they are the band you shouldnt be writting a review including it. thats all. o yea, buy this cd. bye

As Chuck D. put it, "most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps." But quite a few of them have been signed to Def Jam records. Aside from a brief period in the early '90s (anyone remember Downtown Science?), rap's premier label has remained ahead of the game for the past 15 years. Proof positive is this collection. Starting with LL Cool J's classic "Radio," it gathers many of the label's early hits--singles that were wildly successful at a time when hip-hop didn't have many commercially viable outlets--along with several of its new generation platinum-plus selections.

Besides the well-chosen inclusion of Domino's sadly overlooked "Getto Jam" and Oran "Juice" Jones's classic "The Rain," there aren't many surprises in the lineup, which is a good thing. From EPMD to Jay-Z, all the songs you wanna hear are right here. On the minus side, 3rd Bass and Nice and Smooth could have been better represented, and we could have done without the Foxy Brown and Ja Rule tracks. All told, however, this is a bit of History worth owning. --Rebecca Levine

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Def Jam Needs To Open The Vaults (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2007-05-29

With a title like "Def Jam 1985-2001: The History Of Hip Hop, Vol. 1" you would think that they would take you through the history of their record company over a 16 year period. Well they do...sort of. Since '85 (the year I was born), Def Jam has had a major spin of artists that were on their roster, that had big hits. Artists like LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy really held down the company through the mid to late 80's with chart topping singles like "Radio", "Fight For Your Right" and "Fight The Power" respectively. Some of the lesser known artists from the 80's were on here as well like Oran "Juice" Jones with his song "The Rain" (the reason I bought this album, because I couldn't find the song anywhere else). Then in the 90's they have most of the artists who are currently hanging around today like Jay-Z (of course), DMX, Redman, Method Man, Foxy Brown. Most of them all scored hits and chart topping singles with the songs on here.

So why such a low rating? Good question. Every one of these song here bang, but this doesn't cover all of Def Jam's roster within the 16 year period. You're probably thinking that as big as Def Jam was, everybody wouldn't be able to fit on one CD. True, but the problem that I have is that most of these songs are easily accessable, with the exception of a few, and mostly on their solo albums. Notice how there are few artists from the west coast on here. In fact there are only two; Warren G. and Domino. Many people may not know that Def Jam left out a boat load of artists who had singles just as good as the ones on here and could have blown up if they had the correct promotion. Artists like Jayo Felony, Richie Rich, South Central Cartel (just to name a few) had banging singles just as the ones on this CD, but suffered poor promotion back in the 90's. Who ever was on Def Jam's marketing team should have been fired. Those people should have a place on this album as well as others that should be accessable to fans of Def Jam at a reasonable price. It sucks that we are given a CD full of people that everybody knows (not to mention there are aready a few other Def Jam Greatest Hits CD's that are floating around). Most of these songs were already played into the ground back in the day, and fans already have the albums that these songs are on.

What I'm trying to say is that Def Jam needs to expose the artists that they just forgot back in the day, not to mention let their albums go out of print. Here are some of the albums/artists who suffered poor promotion that didn't make it on the album: Take a Ride, All Day Everyday, Conversation, Seasoned Veteran, This Is the Shack, just to name a few. Given those album might not have had banging singles like the ones on this album, but if they had the proper promotion and air play, they would have gold/platnum plaques. Some of the lesser know artists get exposed on the Def Jam Music Group Inc.: 10th Year Anniversary, but not all of them...let alone paying a high price for that. It sucks that Def Jam has forgotten a chunk of their roster, and doing whatever it can to make sure they stay forgotten by not putting them on this LP. Buy this if you're looking for some old big name hits by big name artists at the time the songs came out. But you can make a Def Jam Greatest Hits CD yourself, and not spend any money on this here. Hopefully Def Jam will open their vaults, and dig deeper to expose fans of artists that they forgot on the "History of Hip Hop, Vol. 2" album, but with all the new artists and it's new management, there is a lesser chance of that happening. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars good.......2005-03-30

this is a good compilation but where the hell is t la rock and jazzy jay's it's yours? thats a rap classic for sure and i reckon def jam's first record should at least be on the greatest hits. its not on here and it ain't on the other one either. WTF?!?

5 out of 5 stars Def Jam Classics.......2001-08-10

Def Jam has developed the reputation of being the staple of hip-hop music. From the days when LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys ruled the airwaves to the modern times of Ja Rule and Method Man, theyv'e always been able to sign the superstar artists. Def Jam's History of Hip-Hop compilation captures the shining moments of their time as rap's dominant label in one album. Only the classic rap anthems make the record.Slick Rick's "Children Story" and EPMD's "Crossover" are too joints alone that make this album a must have. Throw in the G-funk of Warren G and Nate Dogg's Long Beach duet "Regulate", Jay-Z's club-banger "Can I Get A" and Mary J and Method Man's "All I Need Remix" and there are just too many jewels to pass up. All of these tracks belong on any bodys musical collection and theres no better way to get them than in one dope cd.

4 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2001-02-20

This is a great CD with alot of good songs on it, spanning three decades. It has a variety of different styles and doesn't get old. It is great for me because I like new music as well as old school music.

5 out of 5 stars All Of These Are Just Dope!.......2001-02-19

Man, unless they remix these all to hell, there's no way this list can screwed up. I mean you have old school stuff like Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys, new school stuff like Jay-Z and Ja Rule, plus all of the isht in the middle. Thing is destined for stardom! Yeah, well I guess that's all there is to say.

Album Description

Run DMC were one of the true pioneers of rap music. Formed in the early eighties they had a string of hit singles and multi-platinum albums through the decade, which helped to define the sound of contemporary rap music. They also pioneered the crossover with rock and pop typified by their worldwide hit "Walk This Way", which they recorded with Aerosmith. This concert at Montreux in 2001 was one of the last they performed before the tragic death of Jam Master Jay in 2002.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The "only" Run DMC live concert captured on film!.......2007-04-12

Artist: Run DMC
DVD: Live at Montreux, 2001
Label: Eagle Vision
Sound options: PCM Stereo; Dolby Digital 5.1; DTS Surround Sound.
Note: There is a separate audio CD now available.

The latest in a series of DVDs capturing performances from throughout the history of the Montreux Jazz Festival, this captures what was apparently the only performance of Run-DMC at the festival in 2001. Darryl Mac, Reverend Run and Jam Master Jay perform their hits to a capacity club crowd. For the uninitiated, Run-DMC were one of the key acts to prove that hip-hop could be a viable performance art and served as defacto ambassadors for rap music to international audiences. Here in Switzerland, the ambassadors have returned.

Pros:
Jam Master Jay warms up the crowd with his expert turntable skills before the group's signature MC's take the stage. Dressed in black with their fedora hats and Adidas shirts, the group's energy doesn't seem to have dampened from their heyday, delivering enthusiastic renditions of their classic material. Track for track, there are four cuts from Run DMC ("It's Like That, Rock Box/Sucker MC's/Here We Go (medley)", three from Raising Hell ("It's Tricky", "Walk this Way", "Peter Piper"), "King of Rock", "Down with the King", "It's Over" and "School of Old (a cappella)" from Crown Royal, with some freestyles and ad-libs interspersed.

The stage show is unadorned; only one assistant occasionally comes out to help JMJ sort his dub plates during the set. No 50+ homies crowding the stage and no confusion on who the stars are tonight. The end of the concert is particularly bittersweet, as Run switches place with Jay and the latter gives a brief exit monologue, exhorting everybody to throw up the peace sign.

Cons: The set is just a little over an hour - maybe enough for casual fans but short enough to leave die-hard fans begging for more (my beloved "Beats to the Rhyme" is reduced to part of a medley). Also, as of 2001, DMC's voicebox problems were clearly audible- he makes the best of it, though, with Run & Jay (and his own original recorded voice) at the assist. Run does quite a bit of cursing for an ordained minister ("just throw your go*damn hands in the air!" uh, alright, rev..) lending some unintentionally humorous subtext to the proceedings. There is also no bonus material (i.e., discography, interviews, etc.)

No, this isn't Run-DMC at their "prime", but hit-for-hit and for stage charisma, they blow away most of today's performers. Curiously, this is the only all-Run-DMC concert film released (the 1995 performance documentary "The Show" featured them in one segment). Unfortunately, Jay's untimely demise means there will be no more Run DMC performances with the original trio intact. Whoever has footage of the Fresh Fest, Raising Hell or Tougher than Leather tours is sitting on gold; if there's any justice in the world, it will be on shelves someday.

5 out of 5 stars Off tha Hook!.......2001-11-24

This is a tight cd. when i saw it i couldn't believe it. ya, it has a couple overplayed song but the blast by hi-tek and talib kweli, gravel pit by wu-tang clan, oh no by mos def and many others were not played enough and this cd is definitely worth getting even with overplayed songs like southern hospitality, ms. jackson, and shake (it fast).

    3 out of 5 stars 1/2 n 1/2.......2001-08-16

the tracks on this cd are decent but half the songs on here are played out. its something you might wanna get, just to have but if you play it out yourself you'll never wanna hear this cd again. the source has always held it down but with the way hip hop was in 2k, its hard to put together a good cd without having the same three artists over n over again.

definetly check out the source hip hop hits volume one and three, you'll see that this cd cant compare. still there were some tight tracks on there you need to hear cuz i know they need more exposure; 04. Bonnie And Shyne - Shyne 06. The Blast - Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek - classic 10. Gravel Pit - Wu Tang Clan - different style from RZA but decent 11. Look Me In My Eyes - Scarface - banger 15. Ante Up (Robbing-Hoods Theory) - M.O.P. - tight 17. Keep It Thoro - Prodigy of Mobb Deep - raw beat

4 out of 5 stars Another good one from The Source.......2001-08-14

This is just as good, if not better than the other Source CDS! They continue to put out good music, just as we will continue to buy it!

      5 out of 5 stars brayn.......2003-06-01

this is the start of the new progressive house music for the new millenium. in 2000 it was like disco stuff getting over the house disco thing. this was ahead of it's time but really good you can droove to it all night long but it seems like such a change fm 2000 into 2001 it shocked alot of poeple but it did change the style of house forever. this is the foundation for the new rave scene for the next ten years or so check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album of all time........2002-02-12

This is my favorite album of all time, period. Words cannot express how much I love '2001'. It still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Its been almost a year since I first bought 'Clubbers Guide to 2001' and I listen to it almost daily. This, in my opinion is MOS's greatest. But, I'm biased as Tall Paul is my favorite DJ.

3 out of 5 stars Up and down outing from MOS.......2001-09-07

Ministry bombard us with yet another compilation, which is not a bad thing as in general I find them to be a good way to wind up an evening. This time round the provided tunes are a mix of chart toppers, club tunes and a couple of fillers. My main problem with this CD is that it never really gets going for an extended period of time, the studio work appears to have broken up the levels of adrenalin. While a good CD I would say it pales in comparison to last years Guide to 2000.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME GUIDE TO 2001.......2001-07-27

This is one of the better all around compilations I've EVER heard!!! Tall Paul's track selection is unbelievable. He has brought in every "Going" to be big track of 2001 into this miX. My personal fav. is Rythmkillaz Wack A. M.F. on CD02. CD02 is a much harder mix than than the first with the first bringing home the best of trance & CD02 hitting you in the face with several great hard house tracks!! Then bringing home with a few trance anthems. Buy this album now!!! You can't go wrong!! This is more of a "Who's Who" of dance culture!!!!! And you don't want to be missed do you with tracks from X-press2, Fatboy, Schiller, & on & on & on.

1 out of 5 stars fool me once.. shame on u.. fool me twice.. shame on me.......2001-07-05

this is the last ministry of sound cd i will buy. almost all the songs on cd 1 are just endless boring loops of synth and drums. if a club actually played this music people would be heading for the door. there are only two songs worthwhile in the whole set. i would pass on this mess.
