Introduction To The World's Most Overlooked Supergroup.......2007-04-28
Under the Milky Way: The Best of the Church" is primarily a good compilation of mostly 1980 to 1990 Church CDs that were very good to great. Starfish was their only masterpiece in this era. The songs "Under The Milky Way" and "Metropolis" gave them warranted fame and acclaim. Suddenly in 1992 the Church began to make superlative CD's on a par with Pink Floyd, Radiohead and vintage U2. Tragically, the music industry ignored or forgot about the Church. They have five CDs that are better than Radioheads or U2s five best CDs. They are called "Priest=Aura","Sometime Anywhere", "Hologram Of Baal", "After Everything Now This" and "Uninvited Like The Clouds". The latter four CDs are so deep and complex a few listens are needed. The Church's lead vocalist, Steve Kilbey, is the key but the three other band members are equally vital. The Church are totally innovative and unique but their dreamy, elaborate and mesmerizing sound is a hybrid of quality Pink Floyd, U2 and Radiohead. Everything this band has recorded since 1992 is musically gold but not nearly enough of these superlative recordings have been sold. This is the biggest musical travesty since the grievous implosion and demise of the Beatles's inspired band called Badfinger in 1975. I am so glad that the brillant Church have somehow endured and continue to do their best without the Universal Acclaim that they indisputably deserve !
very nice .......2006-10-11
I'm not an expert on The Church--I've always liked the song "Under the Milky Way", but didn't know their other songs. After listening to a few of the tracks on this web page, I decided to buy it.
I'm very happy with it. All the songs are good--there isn't any "filler". Good vocals, good guitar, and good melodies and song writing. If you like the sound of "Under the Milky Way", you'll like the rest of this collection.
The Impossible Task.......2006-02-25
It is impossible to make a greatest hits package that satisfies everyone, especially when a band has been around as long as the Church. Another problem is that I think their hit, "Under The Milky Way", is one of their most boring songs. I've tried so hard to like this song, but I have come to realize I am just the only person alive that just will never get anything out of it. Since it has to be included this album falls way short of my expectations. I usually find true fans of a group don't like the radio hit, but what baffles me more about not liking this song, is that even longtime fans love it so I am really out of touch with this album. Therefore I doubt my Greatest Hits will work for most, but I feel compelled to list it any way. Why 3 songs for the first CD and 2 or less for every other release. It doesn't make sense so I will do away with that format. Here goes: "Unguarded Moment", "Too Fast For You", "Destination", "Hotel Womb",(I do agree Starfish is absolutely brilliant. I could take many songs off this album, but will ignore "Reptile" and "Under The Milky Way", which to me just don't measure up and include two of the best songs ever.), "Tantalized", "Roman" (I thought "Myrrh" was easily left off, but again many thought this to be among the best the Church ever did. I of course could have went with tons of other songs from "Columbus" to "Youth Worshipper", but decided on "Roman", I would agree with "A Month Of Sundays", "Ripple", and if you are going to include "Two Places At Once", which I will also than I have to include "Day Of The Dead", and even "Metropolis" and for another off this album, "Disappointment". I guess I have to include "Under The Milky Way" because that is how business works and the rest can be filled with obscure tunes like "The View" and maybe some prime b-sides.
Very Impressive!.......2005-01-28
This album is a great introduction to the music of the Aussie band The Church, which recorded in the '80s and '90s, and I believe is still putting out music today. Their style is creative electric rock, with terrific melodies, vocals and musicianship. This album is a well-compiled "greatest hits" style collection. Enthusiasts will want the actual albums, but for the casual fan this is a very good selection of tunes. Highlights include "The Unguarded Moment", "Reptile", "Ripple", "Metropolis" and of course the title track. In fact, nearly all the songs are terrific.
Field of Mars.......2004-11-14
If you're here for Under the Milky Way - GET STARFISH!
Then you will find yourself collecting their whole catalog -don't say you weren't warned!
This collection is kind of an odd mish-mash. It is not "the best of." The songs pulled out of their albums just don't have the same impact and the sound quality is not up to par as on the album releases. I initially bought this, but when I got the full albums, they became my favorite band of all time.

Don't wait too long..........2005-09-21
This collection is fantastic, The Five Stairsteps were so very talented and this CD has assembled their recordings from their different labels and put them all in one package.
Seventeen cuts and not a clinker in the bunch. "Danger! She's A Stranger", is a personal fave of mine. And then there's, "World of Fantasy" and "O-O-O Child". I recently purchased the Cameo Parkway Collection and they have a few selections from The Stairsteps and I remembered how much I liked them so I, 1 Clicked ,"The First Family of Soul: The Five Stairsteps" and I am very happy I did-hey, they're on my IPod right now!
One of My Top 5 Favorite Groups All Time.......2004-12-29
Wow! It's marvelous to be able to still get these great songs that I grew up with! I had every single 45 and LP that the Stairsteps ever made. Somehow lost a few of them over the years to people who borrowed them, etc. I am an absolute 5 Stairsteps fanatic! I remember being in love with Aloha when they were all kids, as she and I are the same age. Their songs have truly stood the test of time, and sound just as good to me today as they ever did. Amazingly, I have NEVER stopped playing them in my car or at home, over the years. I have LP's and 45's by all of the old Soul and DOO WOP groups, and I definitely am pleased with this one. I have everything except "THE GIRL I LOVE", which was so hard to find, so I'm very pleased it's on this CD. That's my favorite song by them, EVER! In any event, this compilation of songs by the Stairsteps is every collector's dream! I'll truly enjoy it.
THIS IS ONLY FOR THE SEXY PEOPLE !!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-21
I AM A THIRTY ONE YEAR OLD WOMAN THAT WAS INTRODUCED TO THIS ALBUM OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO. AND AS GOD AS MY WITNESS I CAN NOT BELIEVE THE SUPERB SPLENDOR OF THIS CD. MY MOTHER GREW UP ON THIS CD WHEN SHE DATED MY DAD. EVERY SONG ON THIS CD IS HOT TO DEF. I AM IN AWE OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S VOICES ON THIS ALBUM. THIS ALBUM IS UP THERE WITH MICHAEL JACKSON'S THRILLER . AND YES I AM DEAD SERIOUS ABOUT THAT.
THIS ALBUM IS A MASTER PIECE.

Sweet Jesus!.......2007-06-11
I discovered this group by reading in the liner notes of the Grateful Dead's 'American Beauty' album, I also read that Jerry Garcia contributed some Pedal Steel Guitar to Brewer & Shipley's 'Tarkio' album, and then a good friend of mine played me "One Toke Over The Line" and I knew that I had to hear more.
Basically what I was dealing with a singer/songwriter duo that easily rivals Simon & Garfunkel, America, and CSNY. However, their sound has a more country twang. Starting off with the hippie anthems "People Love Each Other" and the title hit, I knew that there was something special with these guys.
These guys do good political songs like "Oh Mommy", nice folk tunes like "Ruby On The Morning", and good road trip anthems like "Rise Up (Easy Rider)" and "Tarkio Road". They even jam out a little with "Fifty States Of Freedom" and their superb covers of Jim Pepper's "Witchi-Tai-To" and Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower".
If you like the country-rock stylings of Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, or The Grateful Dead, you'll love Brewer and Shipley, and this is the best place to start with their music.
A nice overview.......2007-03-30
This is a nice overview of Brewer & Shipley's work. It includes their one big hit, the classic "One Toke Over The Line", and their minor hits "Tarkio Road" and "Shake off the Demon." It also includes some hippie favorites like "Rise Up Easy Rider", "People Love Each Other", and "50 States of Freedom." A solid collection of early 70's hippie music!
Too much missing, but what's here is Great!!.......2004-06-12
Looking at the track list for "The Best Of" I was hoping for more of "Weeds"-Brewer and Shipley's 1969 Kama Sutra debut. Even with 7 tracks, the powers-that-be chose to miss 3 of the best ones; 'Indian Summer,' 'Too Soon Tomorrow,' and 'Oh, Sweet Lady.' all three offer some of the best melodies and harmonies on the album.
In fact, I don't think there is a track from "Weeds" that doesn't belong on a true greatest hits, really. And, of course, "Weeds" is out of print!
"Tarkio" is a good album, too. I know you have to stop and make a choice somewhere. It seems a shame, though.
Oh yes, get this CD. All are strong tracks. A decent overview.
Brewer and Shipley left the craziness of LA for Kansas City in the late 60's. And KC still loves 'em. Wonderful to hang with and perfect match for making music. Very adequate for a duo live.
Fortunately you can now get the first two albums complete from
Collector's Choice Music with amazing liners!
Woefully incomplete.......2003-11-07
I suppose Brewer and Shipley were "one hit wonders" to most, but not where I came from (Kansas). Tom & Mike were our local heroes, KC area boys who made a name for themselves doing what they loved, making music.
Much of their best music didn't get AM radio airplay. "Oh Mommy", was our pseudo-hippie anthem and, thankfully, is included in this woefully inadequate compilation.
Tom & Mike harmonize as well as any brother act. Their songs have a wonderful folkie sound that harkens back to a safer, simpler time when "make love not war" was our slogan.
I originally gave this CD 3 stars because this "collection" misses quite a few of my favorite B/S songs like, "Song From Platte River", "Don't Want To Die In Georgia", and Jackson Browne's "Rock Me On The Water".
But I added back one star because it includes my favorite B/S song, "Rise Up (Easy Rider)", and another great one "Fifty States of Freedom".
It's a shame that Rhino or some other smart label hasn't put together a decent B/S package.
Nice Collection Of Their Hits!.......2002-07-23
I can relate to the comments made by a previous viewer regarding the fact that Brewer and Shipley were really one hit wonders, but they were by no means a one-trick act. On the contrary, they were very talented and very skilled performers and artists. For example, anyone who listens closely to their "Shake Off The Demon" album will quickly recognize the depths of their abilities. So, although their catalogue of hits is short, the range of their work is much broader, and it is a shame that much of that work is not included here. I would much prefer to see an anthology that addressed a lot of the excellent folk-rock releases they produced, including a lot of the material from the "Shake Off The Demon" Album. For example, their treatment of Jackson Browne's "Rock Me On The Water" is probably the single best interpretation of the song I have yet heard, yet it is not available anywhere for anyone not having the original vinyl album.
What is included here is good stuff, but there is too little of it and it is not fully representative of all their work. Once again, like a previous reviewer I feel that much more should be included from their earlier and more elemental phases. Yet this is not to deny the appeal of what is here, including "One Toke Over The Line", "Tarkio Road", "Oh, Mommy, "People Love Each Other", and a lovely cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower'. Also here is "Shake Off The Demon", "Yankee Lady", and an interesting number called "Fifty States Of Freedom" which is kind of an instant ticket back to those fabled times in the sixties when such commentaries meant something. All in all, this is an interesting album, and one I am glad to own, but I am hoping for a more complete and more representative release of the corpus of their work, including the bulk of the songs from "Shake Off The Demon" someday soon. Enjoy!

Oh Happy Day!.......2007-05-26
I first noticed Edwin Hawkins when I heard "I'm Going Through" on an episode on Homicide Life on the Street - The Complete Season 4, called "For God And Country". I thought at the time that it was an excellent tune but after making a note of the performer, didn't really think much else of it.
Then "Oh Happy Day" turned up recently on TV adverts for chocolate biscuits. I'd heard this one before of course but didn't know who performed it. I certainly didn't realise that it was the same choir who performed the tune I'd noticed on "Homicide" just a few weeks earlier. I immediately knew I had to get my hands on this CD and placed my order.
I'm not a religious person by any means (any more) but there's something about the sound of a gospel choir with its collective voice raised in praise, that just gets to me. I try to rationalise it but fail every time. This is about more than just a bunch of people with very good voices. It's purely emotional and maybe even spiritual. I just love the sound of gospel choirs. It's the main reason I bought The Preacher's Wife: Original Soundtrack Album. For me, that album is less about Whitney Houston, much more about the Georgia Mass Choir.
And I certainly love the sound of The Edwin Hawkins Singers. "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord", the album opener, is very moving. "Joy, Joy" I could listen to all day. Other favourites include "Give Me A Star", the jazzy "I Shall Be Free", "To My Father's House", "Jesus, Lover Of My Soul", "Ooh Child", "Precious Memories", "Late In The Evening"...
And of course, "Oh Happy Day" and "I'm Going Through".
In fact, to be honest, I love the entire album. It's called "The Best of The Edwin Hawkins Singers", after all.
O Happy Day! Yeah!!!!!.......2007-03-21
Yeah....couldn't believe I found this....My mom still has the record & used to play when I was a little girl.....I can remember most the songs....love it!!!I'm a music director in our local church and wanted my choir to do this for Easter, I have the perfect soloist.....this song is so filled with the presence of the Lord!.....sounds like the original recording too....
Great Christain Music.......2007-01-10
I've been in love with this song for years. Everytime I forget it, it comes back to the forefront. Most recent was in Sister Act II. I've been to see the Hawkins Singers several times and have always had a blessed and enjoyable experience.

AAAAAAAAMENNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-15
When you have a rough day the sounds of Edwin Hawkins can lift your spirits! My number one recommendation is OH HAPPY DAY!! It's another one of the songs I am proud to have in my collection! The hand clapping and gospel singing will lift your heart like is does mine! Enjoy!!
If you can't make it to church.........2002-03-05
If you need a spiritual uplift and can't make it to church on a particular Sunday, listen to this an enjoy. Much of the material from this CD comes from another great gospel classic, Edwin Hawkins & co.'s "Oh Happy Day" album from 1968. However, there are some excellent tunes form other later Cd/Albums. The gospel version of the 5 Stairsteps Classic "Ooh Child" is a standout that's comparable to the original (best listened to on a sunny morning to give your day a good start). Tramaine Davis (later Hawkins) solo on "Precious Moments" is also worth the price of admission.
The Hawkins Singer's gospel version of Dylan's "Blowing In the Wind" is one of the best and most inventive interpretations of a Bob Dylan song I've ever heard. The piano, drums, and organ workout during the chorus must be heard to be beleived. But in either case, just buy this wonderful CD if you are in need of spiritual uplift or just a lover of good music.

Sha Na Na rocks but this album isn't their best.......2004-07-25
This album wasn't even relesed by the band, just put out by previous record labels. If you want some real, studio recorded, Sha Na Na, check out their Rock and roll dance party, and of course the Grease soundtrack. Their website (shanana dot com) has a list of their tour dates, which trust me (i saw them last week in danville, ca) still rocks.
Sha Na Na YES! ...This CD NO!.......2003-11-20
I do not want to be redundant. Read the other reviews given they are well done...these guys have talent and have always been able to walk the fine line between serious rock performer and a send up of the rock stars of the 50's and 60's. That is their genius. Unfortunately, it gets lost on this CD which has mediocre sound quality and incorrect tempo for some of the songs. Buy Sha Na Na CDs, just not this one!
Major Disappointment!.......2002-12-30
As a huge fan of the movie "Grease," I was looking forward to this CD. I used to watch the Sha Na Na variety show in the '70s and have enjoyed their cover versions on the soundtrack for the last 24 1/2 years. But what a disappointment it turned out to be. First of all, it's not advertised...but about half of the tracks are live. Secondly, the sound isn't all that great. Now I'm sure (as the previous reviewer stated) that the group is a terrific live act. However, I don't think this translates well to record and CD. In this instance, I would have preferred the polished sound of the studio versions.
No Substitute For the Real Thing.......2002-08-18
I saw these guys in concert back in the early Seventies when I was in college. They put on a heckuva show and provide more than competent covers of classic Fifties material. I even bought a few of their albums before I started buying the originals. Sha Na Na were always more enjoyable in concert than on record. Don't get me wrong. These guys aren't hacks, but they bring nothing new to these songs. My advice--stick with the original artists. But catch them live if you get the chance.

The Best of Norman Connors........2007-04-05
There's a reason this CD is called the Best of Norman Connors--it's because it is the BEST hands-down. "Valentine Love," especially, is my all-time favorite. It is timeless.
A smooth. relaxing album........2007-01-27
I love Norman Connors. Although I am only 24 years old, his music is very interesting. It is easy to fall in love with every song. This album is Norman Connors at his finest. My favorite songs on this album would have to be You are My Starship, Dindi, Love from the Sun, and Mother of the Future. I can't wait to get my drivers license, so I can cruise to the sounds of his music while I am driving in New York City!!!!!
Best of Norman Connors.......2005-09-20
It took to long to get this on CD. This is a classic from the 70's and a timeless treasure.
not a shoddy cd, but just missing one good song..........2005-03-24
this is the first real good collection of norman's music that i've come across. the hits are all here, including the late nite quiet storm classic 'you are my starship', featuring michael henderson. some cool tracks i discovered on this cd were " be there in the morning" featuring miss adaritha on vocals, and the title track to norman's 1977 lp "romantic journey". for the missing song, that would have to go to the song "invitation", which rapper mos def actually sampled to perfection on the 2002 "brown sugar" soundtrack. other than that, this is a stellar release. thanks to buddah records and norman connors.
Considering Norman's vast catalog, this CD is too shoddy!.......2003-08-08
Most of Norman's classic Buddah albums deserve to be reissued on CD. While this one has all the big hits, maybe it should have been a 2-CD set. Connors was a very important figure in 1970s jazz and he deserves a better and more complete anthology.

Fabulous.......2006-08-09
I really love this compilation of Mr. Mister, all the songs are great, have good rhythm and harmony and are fun songs to listen to. It takes me back to the 80's and I also feel that Mr. Mister is very underrated they were one of the best groups of the 80's. My personal favorite has always been "Broken Wings", but really I love all of the songs on this disc, they all make me feel really good.
A pleasure through and through. Upbeat and tuneful........2004-10-16
OK, I'll admit it. The only song I remember hearing by Mr. Mister is their wonderful single, "Broken Wings." But now I have this collection and I'll say emphatically that far from being a one-song group, they have a breadth of style and a depth of harmonic and melodic skills that let them come up with this bunch of songs that'll make you tap your fingers, rock your head, or maybe even dance. These songs will certainly make you smile, help relieve your cares and lift your spirits. Dare I say it, this music will make you feel good. It's got a relentless surge of optimism and romance, and a heck of a good beat. This is a gifted group, and their music is a treasure.
What a band!.......2004-01-27
As far as I can tell these guys are as clean as a whistle, meaningful and morally correct lyrics along with stellar musicianship and production. These guys had a sound all their own that was both entertaining AND thought provoking, if only they would make a comeback!
It's ok..........2002-09-22
The only songs I knew were Kyrie Eleison and Broken Wings. The rest of the songs weren't as good I thought, but I bought it for those 2 songs so it was ok.
Pretty Good!.......2002-08-26
Clearly, Mr.Mister was trying to sound like and be the American version of the Police.{Note,"Control" from "Go On".} If you ask me, I think that they were a pretty good band who were trying to be popular. I saw them as a warm up act for Don Henley in the Eighties, and they were just great! I think that "Go on" could have and would have been better if the single hadn't been "Something real [inside me/inside you." Their second album,"Welcome to the Real World," was definetly the best. Just buy that, because it had all the best hits. In general, Mr.Mister was one of those bands that was good, but didn't get too much publicity.

Terrific and a real blast!!!! Oh & Simon said I could review them!!!.......2006-04-20
Along with The Ohio Express came The 1910 Fruitgum Company and gee am I glad they did.Another Bubble Gum group with a vast list of very popular and catchy songs. The cd is very inexpensive and well worth the money. The songs are all the originals but remastered.Great sound quality and the cd consists of 16 songs which are.....1) Simon Say 2)May I take a Giant Step 3)Please me, Tease me 4)Sweet Lovin' 5) Play Our Sog Mr.Music Man 6)1,2,3 Red Light 7)Candy 8)Liza 9) Indian Giver 10) Dee-Licious 11) 1910 Cotton Cany Castle 12)Bubble Gum World 13) Special Delivery 14) Goody Goody Gumdrops 15) The Train 16) Reflections from the Looking Glass.A very catchy and upbeat compilation of songs that make you smile and the memories can be over powering if you listened to 1910 FGC growing up as I did.I splendid collection of pop and fun songs with that Bubble Gum sound.Try it you'll like it.
Fond Childhood Memories.......2004-12-30
when i was thirteen i wore out 3 copies of Indian Giver. i bought the others in the 3 for a dollar bin. these included Simon Says, 1-2-3 Redlight, Goody Goody Gumdrops, Special Delivery, and May I Take A Giant Step. the sound is the best ever and album tracks like The 1910 Cotton Candy Castle, and b-side Reflections Of The Looking Glass are welcome additions. unfortunatly, i wish they included the single versions of Simon Says, Goody Goody Gumdrops and Special Delivery. they are all vastly different. Simon Says is available through the verese bubblegum series. still, you can't go wrong with this one.
Sixties bubblegum at it's best.......2002-09-15
Bubblegum pop was never meant to be anything more than lightweight, fun music. Despite the critics, people bought the music because the songs were very catchy and well performed.
Perhaps the best of the bubblegum groups was the 1910 fruitgum co, who's biggest hit was Simon says - it was #4 in America and #2 in Britain. I remember being a little boy in the fifties playing the game Simon says, and I remember being a teenager hearing the song Simon says played at teenage parties and everybody dancing to it.
There were several other hits in America, but not in Britain where they remain a one-hit wonder. All their American hits are here, the two biggest apart from Simon says being 1 2 3 red light and Indian giver, both of which peaked at #5. Two others (Goody goody gumdrops and Special delivery) just made the top forty, and they had two other minor hits, these being May I take a giant step into your heart and The train. The rest of this collection is made up of the best album tracks and B-sides.
Music like this is not meant to be taken seriously, but it's very catchy and great fun.
Essential bubblegum classics.......2001-12-11
Admit it - you dug the 1910 Fruitgum Company in the fifth grade and you want to hear those great, naughty-but-silly double-entendre bubblegum hits again. Delight, then, in this beautifully-produced anthology. Excellent remastering, excellent liner notes, all the tracks you remember and then some. I'm not saying this is "Abbey Road" or something, but it's certainly essential in its own way, and if your friends and family make derogatory comments, tell them how the Talking Heads used to faithfully cover "1-2-3 Red Light" in concert! Recommended also is the Ohio Express collection and, to a lesser extent, the Lemon Pipers.
Great Bubblegum lasts forever!.......2001-08-10
Yes,yes, yes! The 1910 F.C. had some of the catchiest, fun pop music EVER!Sure,it's debatable who played/sang on what, but who cares? The great songs are what matters and this is a top-notch collection of "their" best stuff!Rock on,Bob PS:INDIAN GIVER is one of the best songs of all time!

What a Hoot!.......2006-04-20
I was glad to see this cd of Ohio Express. It brought back many fond memories. They have that very distinct bubble gum sound all us fans love. The cd is very well made and the sound quality is terrific. The cd is also inexpensive.Ohio Express was popular back in the 60's to early 70's and had many hits. There are 14 of their popular songs on this cd and they are as follows.....1)Yummy,Yummy,Yummy 2)Sweeter than Sugar 3)She's not coming home 4)Gimme,Gimme 5)Chewy,Chewy 6)1,2,3,Red Light 7)Down at Lulu's 8)Sausalito 9)Pinch Me 10)Mercy 11)Lucky 12)Firebird 13)Nothing Sweeter than my Baby 14)Nighttime. My Favorite was Yummy,Yummy,Yummy. My 25 year old daugther was brought up listening too the Ohio Express and now she loves them too. They were and still are great in my eyes.A very upbeat type of music with that good old fashioned Bubble Gum twist.Listening to them will make anyone smile. How could you not?.....:).I recommend this cd very highly.
Ohio Express Fan.......2006-04-17
This CD has fantastic sound. Too bad more songs weren't included.
Kim Coopers liner notes are great. Especially like the pictures on the Cd cover. The Mansfield, Ohio guys are a nice bunch of men. It was too bad they were jacked around. Musically they still perform as the Ohio Express, with Tim Corwin and occasionally Doug Grassel.
Also check out the Website www.bubble-music.com. It's really a great site for us bubblegum fans. Also check out Joey Levine's 2005 Bubblegum Achievement Award. That was in Los Angeles last October. What a cutie!!!!!!!!!!!
I would highly recommend this CD to all Ohio Express Fans.
A couple of classic songs, some interesting filler..........2005-09-17
Haven't bought the Collectables disc yet, but on the basis on this disc, The Ohio Express weren't exactly interchangeable with 1910 Fruitgum Co.--they were inferior. Is it because of the songs selected for this package or the material the band was originally issued? A garage band who got "discovered" and then chewed up by the heartless music biz, Ohio Express became a faceless musical outfit, a name to stick with a song, and the only evidence they had promise as an early outfit comes with the evocative, self-penned "She's Not Comin' Home" (one of the very best tracks). I don't know why "1,2,3 Red Light" is here--there's no discernible difference from the 1910 Fruitgum version, and the liner notes don't explain why this is so (I always thought of it as a Fruitgum song). "Chewy Chewy" has a really sophisticated, Phil Spector-ish arrangement and is this group's crowning achievement (although "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" actually charted higher), but the last few songs offer absolutely nothing. B-
More R&B Influenced Than The 1910 Fruitgum Co........2004-12-30
another group that i found all the singles in the three for a dollar bin. lot of single versions not included here, such as Chewy Chewy, Down At Lulu's, Mercy, and a harder Yummy Yummy Yummy. also not included are the two cameo releases Beg, Borrow Or Steal and Try It. the former can be found on nuggets box set as by the Rare Breed. these two do not have joey levine singing on them (most likely a different group with the songs bought outright by kasanatz-katz). two others that don't feature levine are Saucilito (it is really 10cc) and Pinch Me (Baby convince Me), both released in 1969. the single version of Chewy Chewy can be found on the varese bubblegum series. still, the sound is great and i would give this five stars if the single versions and the two cameo releases were included.

My inspiration.......2005-08-20
I'm a big lemon pipers fan for one giant reason, their triangle player was the gold standard as far as triangling went. Along with being the top frontman on vocals on the Gretna scene, I also played an off the charts triangle. I played triangle in a speed metal cover band called Rotweilers Buttcrack. We played covers of Pantera and Gorky Park songs and just tore the roof off of club after club. I didn't front this band as I really had to concentrate on making the triangle howl. I would play it on my back, doing cartwheels, on my head and just straight headbanging triangle. There was a solo I played on one of our original songs called, "The trip to hell on the triangle of doom" where I was so on that three girls in the front row fainted at the sheer force of what I was doing. Unfortunately I got all caught up in the scene like most triangle players do and I was pulling all nighters at waffle house. I was ordering hash browns with all of the fixings and pouring chocolate milk on them. Yes, it was messed up and I'm having a hard time holding together even as I type. I've got my life turned around now and play the triangle like it was meant to be played, for the fans and not myself. This band got me hooked on the greatest instrument though and for that I thank them.
3 Degrees of Separation..........2005-06-28
Rather than offering a critique of the album, I'd like to point out some interesting connections to this band:
1. The group Steam, who sang "Na Na, Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" held in its membership one Paul Leka, who was part of The Lemon Pipers.
2. The group The Peppermint Rainbow, who sang "Will You Be Staying After Sunday" and "Don't Wake Me Up in the Morning, Michael", also includes Paul Leka. And they even included a near-identical cover of "Green Tambourine" on their album.
So, if you want to get a really interesting snapshot of the evolution (or perhaps lack thereof, should you decide such) of a group of musicians, listen to the recordings of all three groups.
Psychedelic bubblegum.......2004-12-31
while not the hitmakers the Ohio Express & the 1910 Fruitgum Co. were, they had the best song of the bunch with Green Tambourine. also great were jelly Jungle (Of Orange Marmalade), Rice Is Nice and Blueberry Blue. they certainly could have included the single version of Green Tambouine which has a more bassy mix and less echo. four stars is being generous.
the best compilation available for this band.......2002-01-12
The Leka/Pinz songs are the "bubblegum" part of the collection, and while the lyrics on some of those are juvenile, the music is always enjoyable. Good lightweight orchestral pop with many instruments, along with the band's own guitars, keyboards and drums. Sitar, horns, harpsichord, and violin, are some of the other instruments added, that make this music more creative than typical "bubblegum." These atmospheric songs are best appreciated with headphones or careful listening. The group originals are rather good, "Wine and Violet" is an obscure gem of the psychedelic era with demented lyrics and backwards guitar, along with an echoed flute. The closing near 12-minute track shows a progressive side to this under-appreciated band. Any fan of psychedelic music should get this. Because the sound quality is top of the line, this is the best compilation for the band, even though it is missing a few good tracks. Check the page for more information, and my ratings of their songs.
Well done anthology.......2001-12-11
Excellent remastering, excellent liner notes, all the tracks you remember and then some. Their material, though, was never that strong -- self-conscious ersatz psychedelia that doesn't hold up as well as that of the childishly naughty Ohio Express or 1910 Fruitgum Company, whose Buddha CD antholgies are more highly recommended. Still, if it's "Green Tambourine" or "Rice Is Nice" you want, this is far-and-away the best CD to go for.
