Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. I had to buy this album as soon as I heard "Rehab" just last month. I can't stop listening to this album. Every song is it's own stand-out. Buy this record if you love soul music and "smart" lyrics. I still can't believe Ms. Winehouse is only 23; you would think she was 43 when reading her lyrics or straight out of the the 1960's.

I couldn't agree more with Amin. Months ago, I saw her on late night TV and thought at the time: "Oh...this is interesting..." Unlike 100's of forgetable performers on TV, she stuck out like...well, like a sore thumb. The "Rehab" song was instantly memorable. But that's just the appetizer. I heard her sing "Back to Black" on Youtube at the SXSW in Austin with just her astonishing voice and an acoustic guitar and I could not believe what I was hearing. Who else sounds like that? Lauryn Hill perhaps...but Amy is Dinah Washington without the godawfull strings, Sara Vaughn without the sappy arrangements. The big question to me is not whether she'll be a big star. She already is. But will she live long enough to make more great music? OTOH, she's already "opening", if you will, as a kind of flawed diamond, certainly not squeaky clean- so she's not going to shock anybody if she falls face down in the gutter...but still, I'm hoping to hear more amazing stuff from this gifted young woman for years to come.

After hearing her Rehab single,I knew that there had to be something else good on the album. Was I right. A nice mix of tunes. You Know I'm No Good,Back To Black and Wake Up Alone are the other standouts. Not typically my style of music,but this caught my eye. After one listen those songs stood out. I'm sure after listening to more,I will like more. If you are new to her like me and don't know whether to get it,I would recommend it. Very unique style. I give it 4 stars and may raise it a few after a few more listens. Check it out...

Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. The title track, a politically right-on-time environmental rant, steers him back toward "Purple Rain" territory, as does "Lion of Judah" ("Guitar," oddly, doesn't--it's more of a straight-up, shout-it-out modern rocker). And the flirty numbers are seriously flammable: "Somewhere Here on Earth" seduces with a crackly jazz vibe, while "Mr. Goodnight" gets friendly with a refined slip of rap. Planet Earth is an aptly named addition to the Prince collection. What I consider to be even better than last year's 3121, Prince takes more chances here and proves that he clearly a genetic freak. He pulls off country, funk, rock, and everything that is swinging in between. Horns here, a riff there, tasty lyrics that make you want to sing along. Prince blankets us with musical mastery, injecting an acoustic tinged album that rocked my socks all the way off. Strong points are certainly the title track as well as The One U Wanna C, Chelsea Rodgers, Revelation, and Guitar. In the end, the whole album flows and almost reminds of a 21st century version of Dark Side Of The Moon. Check it out, boys and girls, this dude unfurls solo after solo and yelps and screams! Buy it now!

This is a solid album with no filler. Planet Earth is Prince's most spine tingling, spirit lifting, booty shaking album in years. There is something for everyone on this album, from rock, funk, classic r&b, soul, and yes even a little rap by Prince. There is nothing Prince has to prove with this album and please do not call this a comeback. Prince has established himself very well and it shows.

The album opens with the title track, "Planet Earth" a very well written and well arranged rock song. This song will make you think. "Guitar" is a fun rock/funk romp and is really cool to blast in your car while riding around. Another cool song to groove to is "Chelsea Rogers" it'll have you shaking that booty "like a Juicy Juice". These are just a few tracks from the album. The whole album is solid, no filler just songs from a musical and marketing genius. Planet Earth is the place 2 b and Prince is the one you wanna see.

"Planet Earth", Prince's 26th studio release will most probably end up remembered for the furore it stirred on release, that of being given away free in the UK with a Sunday tabloid, rather than the great music it contains.

At 10 tracks, it is compact, and continues the winning formula of its two funkier predecessors, "Musicology" and "3121".

Comprising ballads; "Planet earth" (an epic piano/guitar ballad about the sad state of the world), the quiet storm feel of the sax sprinkled "Somewhere here on earth" (nice jazzy piano), "Future baby mama", and "Mr Goodnight", and upbeat pop/rock numbers; the aptly titled "Guitar" (with great guitar riffs and lyrics about preferring his guitar to his lady, it reminds me a bit of "Girls and boys"), "The one u wanna c", "All the midnights in the world", "Lion of Judah", and closing cut, "Resolution" (with shifting moods).

Standout to me has got to be the disco/funk of "Chelsea Rodgers" (the story of a model), with its nice pulsing bassline, peppered horns, and shared vocals. Brilliant!!!

Nothing ground breaking, but a relaxed, free flowing vibe runs through this disc which despite being literally given away is no throw away.

Coming off the heels of two of his most accessible albums in years, Prince continues his steady and consistent stream of releasing some solid material for the masses to hear.

Planet Earth - This title track opens to an eerie piano intro that eventually progresses into a grandiose production of heavy drums, spirited guitar playing and passionate vocal work. For some Prince fans, it may echo shades of the "Empty Room" and "Gold." A dramatic way to open the album - almost daunting to here the first time around. (5/5)

Guitar - Prince's most mainstream approach - a light pop/rock track with lyrics that almost anybody could write. It's a throwaway track, but it's got some spunk. Fun, nonetheless. (3.5/5)

Somewhere Here on Earth - A ballad track that taps into the jazz portion of Prince's varied forte. Renato's keyboard and piano contributions are a welcome change to this track, adding to the wonderful muted horns and trumpets with provoking lyrics. One of the more inspired ballads Prince has had in a while. (4/5)

The One U Wanna C - A very catchy track that dips into the country-rock category, but this maybe one of the few tracks that loses its appeal after a while. Plenty of fast guitar work, with thumping drums, a cool bassline and an energetic vocal delivery. But I think the country-twang attached to it gives the song its own charm. (3.5/5)

Future Baby Mama - An R&B melody that would fit comfortably on an Urban radio playlist. Touches of the old Linn-drum machine are scattered throughout, giving off the slight retro vibe that you would associate with Prince's sound. Cool and sensual are pretty much the words I'd use to describe this little ballad. Cool and sensual. (4/5)

Mr. Goodnight - Some Prince fans will have a problem with this track, since he brings out his dreaded "rap" skills on this one. In my opinion, it sounds more like spoken verse, so I had no problem with it, but that doesn't go without saying it won't give you a chuckle - it's slightly cheesy. This bassline reminds me of something you would hear out of the West Coast in 1994, but to the Prince fan that's familiar with more material, the overall track might remind them of "Player." I don't mind this track. It's a laidback R&B cut - nothing more. The guy's 49 years old, he's gotta chill every now and then. (4/5)

All the Midnights of the World - The shortest track on the album, with some pretty interesting arrangements. It's on the sugary side, but it has its charm. Its vibe is almost reminiscent to "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" and "Starfish and Coffee," but I wouldn't put it in that league. It's more of a segue than anything. A decent segue, at that. (3/5)

Chelsea Rodgers - Finally, some FUNK! A fun disco-funk number with Prince bringing in the whole band to contribute - lots of bass, lots of horns and trumpets, and assisting vocals. Prince's vocals are turned down a bit to mix in with Shelby's soulful singing, reminiscent of the arrangements Earth, Wind and Fire brought to the game. Prince sounds like he's having a lot of fun - full of energy and spirit. Definitely a standout track, especially for the funk lovers. (4.5/5)

Lion of Judah - A nice pop/rock number that sounds like a cross between "Cinnamon Girl" and "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" - could have fit easily onto the Musicology album. Prince's vocals sound sincere, with nice guitar work and effects to boot. (4/5)

Resolution - Another light pop/rock number that could have fit easily on Musicology. It's simple and to the point, not too much to elaborate on here. Another nice production, in terms of arrangement, once again. (4/5)


Prince obviously isn't out to reinvigorate the music industry, he just wants to make music in his own quirky way. No shame in that, considering he's got a 30 year legacy and doesn't have to prove anything to anybody. He just wants to hang around and make music for as long as he wants, when he wants. Compared to Musicology and 3121, Prince doesn't sound like he's being forced to do anything - it seems like he made some of these tracks effortlessly. He's definitely more vibrant and energetic on Planet Earth than he was on his previous two albums, which helps it out in the end. Solid stuff.

One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Like the book and the play, the Wicked soundtrack is mystical and magical. The cast is amazing and Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are enchanting. I recommend the soundtrack to anyone and everyone who loves a great musical fantasy. This is one soundtrack that truly sends you back to OZ. I never liked a whole album of music before Wicked. It is one CD I completely love.

Actually, I'd give it no stars. But Amazon is too charitable. Couldn't the house have fallen on the Wicked Witch in the first scene. "Wicked" is disappointing. It's as if the pyrotechnics, a la "Starlight Express," can make up for the lack of songwriting and original score. It's derivative. It's laughable in non-comedic sense. Its an incredible money machine for some reason. At least I feel for the actors who deserve the continuing paychecks. But I need a few magic monkies to fly in and pickup some of the teenies in the audience who always manage to use their cells they are so bored. Wave your magic wand! Make it all disappear. "Mommie, Mommie, rescue me." "Sorry, babe, Glendora told you to turn off your cells!."

As someone who loves Broadway musicals-- this soundtrack/songs include some of the best out there- the original cast soundtrack is amazing with songs you will eventually memorize and sing along too-
The CD comes with the lyrics as well as the other important information for each song (producer, etc). If you haven't already seen Wicked, you may have trouble following what the show is about just from listening to the soundtrack-- you will get a feel for it but reading the Grimmerie (the Wicked book- also sold on Amazon) or seeing Wicked either on or off Broadway will make you fall in love faster with this soundtrack-

5 out of 5 stars The Wicked Witch of the West is misunderstood........2007-07-14

I have tickets to see the play in Philadelphia this August. I purchased the Music CD, the original Wicked book, and the Grimmeri, a well designed book about the Broadway play, its history, costumes, and character profiles with full color pictures and stories, a great trio. The book tells a story, so unexpected, when I got to the last page, I sighed and smiled. I was totally satisfied. Even more I had already been listening to the music, which is totally fabulous, I listened again and again, some of the songs are happily stuck in my head, and then my reading the book made the music make total sense, it brought the story to life in the songs. I can't wait to see the play.
My sisters refuse to read the book they are afraid it will take away from the show. I say they are dead wrong and the book and music reviewed ahead of time will definitely enhance the theater experience. You decide, either way it's a great read, 5 stars for the generation who grew up with the Wizard of OZ classic.

There are two, for me, outstanding pieces to this recording of the Original cast recording of the musical 'Wicked' The wizard and I and Popular. Both sung with great fun and gusto.
Over all I enjoyed the CD, being a massive wizard of Oz fan, it was interesting to listen to the story from an altogether different perspective. Enjoyable, memorable and fun- a great purchase, that comes highly recommended.

If you thought Black Eyed Pea-sized bites of Fergie might be all you could handle--that a full plate of Fergie is possibly too much for any discerning musical palate--The Dutchess might change your mind. For here the lumpen lady throws caution to the wind and threads her pop needle with an ambitious ribbon of yet-to-be-conquered genres: reggae and ska on "Mary Jane Shoes," with Rita Marley; vintage soul on "Here I Come"; '80s hip-hop on "Fergalicious"; and sophisticated R&B on the John Legend-assisted "Finally." It's a tremendous and unpredictable expenditure of effort that mostly pays off--echoes of more talented vocalists like Pink, Beyoncé, and Christina Aguilera poke through in places. Okay, so I admit to being a bit naive when it comes to buying music. I saw the explicit lyrics warning but couldn't figure out why it was there, I'd heard the CD and it seemed okay to me. I looked through all the reviews, no one said there was a "clean" version. Well, now I have a CD that I can't really listen to with kids around and will probably have to list it on eBay to get rid of it.

When there are 2 versions of a CD (explicit vs. clean) it should be listed somewhere that there are 2. I like the CD. The music is upbeat and Fergie has a terrific voice but unless I'm by myself there is no way I can play this with a carfull of kids.

Fergie could have been just some great eye candy and no substance artist, but she is far from getting that label.

If you are the person who turns your nose up at tracks like Fergalicious and London Bridge then you don't deserve this outstanding album. This album is solid from top to bottom, and beginning to end.

First, Fergie really can sing. She moves from rap to ballards with a smooth ease that makes we want to see what she does next. Second, Ms. Stacy Ferguson doesn't lip sync when on TV shows, and the confidence she has in her voice is displayed in the album. Finally, in my opinion this is the MUST HAVE pop record for 2006/2007.

There's a cool new development in summer singles: they no longer need to be sunny. In fact, the wetter the better. "Umbrella," the first single off Rihanna's ragingly good third album, may be her strongest ditty yet, and that's saying something considering her run of past summer chartbusters. Rihanna definitely made the effort to step up to a more mature sound on this album. The new sound is not half bad either. However, alot of the tracks sound rushed and like no effort was put into them. The beats are solid and there are some memorable lyrics as well. Overall, Id say this cd is worth lending an ear to. I listened to this at work and heard it quite a few times over the course of around 5 days. It annoyed some of my workmates and others didn't mind it - I quite enjoyed some of the music on this album, which is undoubtedly well produced. I imagine that it would sound quite good played up loud at a party or in a club.

Some of the song lyrics struck me as being a little silly, but that didn't bother me too much.

I don't think I'd listen to this album very often, but if I had a lot of guests over for a party, I'd consider playing it if people looked like they may want to dance.

Like Wicked, this show is a girl-friendly extravaganza; the main difference--and it's a big one--is that the score of Legally Blonde is better. Based on the hit Reese Witherspoon movie, the zippy, frothy show tells the story of SoCal, pink-loving sorority girl Elle Woods, who enrolls at Harvard Law and goes on to prove that appearances can be deceiving. The opening number, "Omigod You Guys," gives an idea of what the Broadway-pop score by Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy--The Musical) and Nell Benjamin is up to, embracing its over-the-top cheer with goofily infectious energy. Sure, a couple of numbers feel a bit derivative (the show with the witches has "Popular," this one has "Positive"), and the Celtic detour ("Ireland") is rather puzzling, but overall the songs are firing on all cylinders. Just check out the use of a marching band on "What You Want" for instance. Laura Bell Bundy (Amber von Tussle in Hairspray) is a charming Elle, and she delivers numbers such as "So Much Better" with the requisite elan. But this is not a one-woman show, and Bundy is surrounded by a crack team, including the endearing Christian Borle as Elle's love interest Emmett, power-piped Orfeh as hairdresser Paulette and up-and-comer Leslie Kritzer as Delta Nu's Serena. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have tickets to see this show on Broadway in September, so I have been anxiously awaiting for the CD to be released as I like to be familiar with the tracks before seeing it on stage. Let's just say this album lives up to the hype! Laura Bell Bundy's voice is phenomenal, especially in "So Much Better". This is a must-have to add to your Broadway collection.

When I saw this show at The Palace, I wasn't expecting much, but "Legally Blonde" was my favorite show of the season. Jerry Mitchell's direction is amazing, the cast is perfect, and the music is fantastic. The CD captures the excitement of the score perfectly, and everyone sounds great. The opening number "Oh my God..." is hilarious, and I also love the end of Act One "So Much Better." The title song is sweet and smart. This is a great recording of a wonderful show.

I saw the show on Broadway in May, and by the end of "Serious," I knew I would have to have the cast recording as soon as it was released. I have had this CD on repeat in my car since the day it arrived. I have never known another show's lyrics to be as clever and catchy. The writing is brilliant.

I did not expect to love this musical as much as I do, but now, I am sharing it with everyone I know.

I didn't have high expectations for this album, if I'm being completely honest. I thought the movie, while fun, was a little unoriginal, and add that to a relatively inexperienced cast and my expectations were low. The album jumped way past my expectations to one that has had a spot in my CD rotation for over a week now.

When I first listened to it, two shows came to mind, Wicked and The Wedding Singer. This soundtrack is a combination of those two shows, almost exactly, in my mind. The marketing and target demographics are similar to Wicked, so there should be no doubt there. It took a very similar path as The Wedding Singer, even hiring the same "bad guy" with Richard H. Blake playing that role well in both productions, although drastically overshadowed in both.

For the role of Elle Woods, they went to Wicked and took Laura Bell Bundy, who was the understudy to Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Glinda. Seeing as how it is easily believable that Glinda could have been a Delta Nu, they also dipped back into the Wicked pool and hired Annaleigh Ashford to play Margot. They played the Delta Nu sisters in throughout the show, making them, on the whole, basically an additional character in the cast.

The CD isn't perfect. Some of the songs are a little tedious. I could have done without Ireland (let alone a reprise of it), or Whipped Into Shape. However, the pluses far outweigh the negatives on this album. The very first number is an engaging, almost obnoxiously upbeat song entitled "Omigod You Guys" and it plays perfectly to set the tone. Christian Borle provides a nice steadying influence in the musical, making sure that it doesn't get too far out of hand and the chemistry between the two sounds excellent on songs like "Chip On Her Shoulder", "Take It Like A Man", and "Legally Blonde" which is a particularly emotional number in the production.

This show is more than just the light fluff of The Wedding Singer, without quite reaching the meaning or appeal of Wicked, but still entirely worth the buy and without a doubt worth listening to.

Who would have thought that Duncan Sheik would succeed where Paul Simon and Randy Newman failed, successfully transitioning from the pop-rock world to the Broadway stage? With Spring Awakening, Sheik and book writer/lyricist Steven Slater (who had already worked on Sheik's 2001 album Phantom Moon) have created a thoroughly exciting show that incorporates a contemporary art-indie idiom (including a small rock band instead of an orchestra) into a dramatic musical-theater context. The unlikely setting is that of a Frank Wedekind adaptation, but as it turns out, teenage angst is perennial, whether it's in contemporary America or in a 1891 German boarding school. Songs such as "The Bitch of Living" ("with nothing going on, asking just what went wrong"), "The Word of Your Body," "I Don't Do Sadness," and "Totally Fucked" ("You're fucked if you speak your mind and you know you will") resonate with the rage, frustration, confusion, excitement, joy, anger, and of course budding lust of those hormone-driven years. Having seen the musical of Spring Awakennings at the beginning of this year I would strongly reconsider purchasing this broadway cast recording. I am a theatre goer (at the age of 29) and have seen the majority of the lastest musicals for example, Grey Gardens, and The Pirate Queen. Anyway I was discusted with the musical of Spring Awakennings; why is it cool to show a couple simulating sex and watching a ploke pretending to toss off? constant swearing etc... - How sick is that!!!!... and you call this a musical worthy of nominations (of the year awards)! What is the world coming to! and what drugs are these so called critics taking?

In my opinion buy something else with your money such as 'The Pirate Queen' which has no longer showing.

The Pirate Queen, with a score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), took a critical beating when it opened on Broadway, but as this catchy cast recording demonstrates, that reception was really unnecessarily harsh. Set in the 17th century, the show (which closed after only 85 performances) tells the story of Grace O'Malley (Stephanie J. Block), an Irish ship captain and pirate who defied Queen Elizabeth I (Linda Balgord). The combination of that setting with the fact that the producers also brought us Riverdance means an overall Celtic flavor. But fans of Boublil and Schönberg should not fear. The duo delivers plenty of the over-the-top, super-emotional power ballads they're famous for--it's hard not to wonder what Celine Dion would make of songs such as "Woman" or "I'll Be There" (the latter sung by a man, but no matter!). Special kudos to Balgord, whose deliciously campy stage portrayal of Elizabeth I comes across well on "The Waking of the Queen," "The Role of the Queen," and two harpsichord-driven, vibrato-laden duets with Block, "She Who Has All" and "Woman to Woman." Also of note to fans of traditional singing is the participation of Áine Uí Cheallaigh (known from Riverdance) on several tracks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I had the pleasure of seeing Pirate Queen both in Chicago 2006 and on Broadway in 2007. While I was disappointed that the cast album is only one CD long instead of two, I was quite surprised by the high quality of the recording and the amount of music packed onto the disc (25 tracks). This is a must-own for any fan of musical theatre, and the most exciting new musical to open in the past several years.

As a musician, I enjoy the chance to hear Schoenberg's musical style evolve through the years, starting with his solo French pop album, his first musical, La Revolution Francaise, and then the big three, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, and Martin Guerre. Pirate Queen is a worthy addition to that impressive body of work. As I listen to PQ, I enjoy hearing moments where a little feature of his style reminds me of one of those other pieces. But I can also hear how his writing has evolved; PQ is full of action, but it's imbued in placed with a subtle hint of melancholy that rivals the most touching moments of the other big three shows (much of this is due to the use of a flatted 6th scale degree, which is a recurring musical motif of the show). I'll mention a few key points here:

1. Overture: much as in Miss Saigon, here local color is added to the score through various Irish instruments. The overture sounds very Irish, yet still evocative of the original slow introduction of Martin Guerre (London version).

2. Entracte: it's all instrumental, and when I saw it in the theatre audience members were sometimes talking over it, but this is the most exciting music in the score. It's in 5/4 time, with plenty of 4/4 and 2/4 measures thrown in to keep it sounding on-edge. Wild, tempestuous music. The 5/4 time signature reminds me of the amazing overture to La Revolution Francaise -- although I like the PQ entracte even more.

3. Woman: this "girl-power ballad" has a unique sound compared with most of Schoenberg's other work, although the build up to the climax follows his trademark strategy of letting the orchestra play the main melody and while the singer comes in later and sings in counterpoint for a few measures. It's my favorite musical device of Miss Saigon, Les Miz, and Martin Guerre, and it shows up here too on the words "I'm meant to fly, sail unrestrained..."

4. I'll Be There: a huge bring-down-the-house torch song for a tenor. It's closest in structure to Why, God from Miss Saigon, including a rather exciting bridge section (here with a lot of electric guitar) and the 2/4 measures of descending bass notes leading into each chorus. This song is nearly perfect -- I just which it were longer (it's 3:16 but feels over far too soon). Schoenberg uses electric guitar melody rather sparingly, but it shows up in just a few key points in Les Miz, for instance, and features quite prominently in this song, sometimes in unison with the string section.

5. If I Said I Loved You: This is a gorgeous love duet in act 2, with some amazing harmony. It really builds in passion, and makes nice subtle use of that Irish sound in the orchestrations.

6. Sail to the Stars: This Act 1 finale is an exciting, intense chorus number. It doesn't compare with the end of Les Miz Act 1, both nothing really does. Instead it's a melancholy but intense funeral scene, and is surprisingly effective.

7. My Grace: This is sung by the Valjean father-figure in the show, and it sounds a lot like a song missing from Les Miz. But it has a unique PQ sound to it, with the flat 6 scale degree. It's extremely moving.

8. Here On This Night: Originally this was my favorite song in the show, although If I Said I Loved You recently stole the #1 spot. This is the main happy love duet from an early part of the show. A classic Boublil & Schoenberg love song, with a sound that makes me feel as if I'm at love on a ship under the stars. Like the best of their love songs, the melody starts on scale degree 2 over the tonic, like Sun and Moon from Miss Saigon.

9. She Who Has All: The most unique aspect of this show is the harpsichord + high operatic soprano role for the Queen. It's an amazing performance, not too much vibrato, so even non-opera fans can enjoy it. This track is a duet between the two lead women of the show, so we get a Broadway singing voice in duet with the opera soprano. Amazingly, it works very well. I can't believe Schoenberg combined these two sounds so effectively in a duet near the climax of the show. Impressive! The duet Woman to Woman also has some of this quality. And the rest of the queen songs have a great early-music harpsichord sound fused with the modern musical orchestra.

10. The Wedding: mostly orchestral (with some chorus), this is a big Irish step dance number. It has a great sound for Irish step music fans; it sounds pretty classic but more bass-heavy, like The Chieftans fused with a rock band.

11. Boys'll Be Boys: this is like Master of the House meets Gaston, only I don't like it as much. Sort of disappointing, but it's an important and funny number.

12. The Sea Of Life: a nostalgic song towards the end of the show, this sounds like what Turning in Les Miz should have been. Turning was always my least favorite part of Les Miz, but Sea of Life is incredible. In a subtle thematic move, the opening melody is the same as the solo flute in the original London opening of Martin Guerre, with a slightly different rhythm and added accompaniment. Even more surprising: probably just by coincidence, the middle of this melody includes 8 notes (with different rhythm) from the "victory" music from Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

All in all, highly recommended!! My only complaint (besides it's premature closing on Broadway for no apparent reason) is really that we can't hear all the additional material that 2 CDs would give us, such as Grania's father's death scene (a modified reprise of My Grace, sort of like the scene at the end of Les Miz), and a very pretty Lullaby Grania sings to her son in Act 2.

The songs in this album were just not that great. The lyrics were not very singable (and indeed some of them didn't even scan properly.) The music also suffered quite a bit from a lack of Irish instrumntation. Most of the music seemed to be just standard, cookie cutter Broadway show tunes and not very memorable ones at that.

The cast did very well, though, considering the poor material it had to work with

All in all, it looks like this play was a lost opportunity. The story of Grace O'Malley is a compelling one and deserves to be told better than it was here.

When I ordered this soundtrack, I completely ignored what the other reviews said (which is ironic because I expect someone to read mine: ) Thinking on my own was the right choice.

Do you like Boubil? Do you like Schonberg? If so, you will most likely like this recording. The farther I get into it, the more I love it!

The recording is powerful. The slow ballads carry its weakest attributes. There are power ballads left and right. Up beat and very cultural to the Irish heritage, this is a wonderful recording. It's not my favorite.

Personally, I would prefer "A Class Act" or "Loving repeating", two soundtracks I just bought and LOVE.

This could be be for you.

It's a good buy. 11 something for a power ballad musical. I currently have about 57 musicals, and I can honestly say this ranks in the top 15. However, that doesn't mean it's staying in my car forever. I am still waiting to receive "A View from Here". hehehe. I love musicals.

3 out of 5 stars A Few Good Moments, But Disappointing Overall.......2007-07-13

I saw this show twice during its run: once in Chicago, once in New York. Loving both "Les Miserables" and "Miss Saigon", I had high expectations for "The Pirate Queen". Sadly, the show was disappointing - primarily from the once aspect I assumed would be great: the music.

The score's orchestrations sound terrific and the cast is quite good (esp. Stephanie J. Block), but (as this cast album reflects) only a couple of songs maintain any real staying power:

Not bad, but could/should have been so much more.

One spin of FutureSex/LoveSounds and it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake was ever a boy-band barnstormer--no modern-day male artist beats him when it comes to single-minded self assurance or suavity. "SexyBack," the inescapable summer sizzler of a first single off this short and thrillingly unwholesome disc, makes that clear on its own: If there was ever any question about whether sexy was in need of reviving--a doubtful proposition at best, given the sheer volume of JT's gyrating counterparts--he lays it to rest instantly over a small but insistent Timbaland-concocted beat. I bought this CD mainly for the Sexyback song and thought the other songs on the CD would have a similar beat/feel to them. I was unpleasantly surprised to find that I really only like 3 songs on the entire CD. Many of them do not sound at all like Sexyback, some of them do not even sound like Justin Timberlake, and some sound like rap-type music. It's okay - but if you are expecting a similar sound/feel for the songs, it is not there.

I must say that I was very surprised that the whole CD was unbelievable... not just tracks Sexy Back and What Goes Around that is now being played in most radio stations. Every song was amazing, with great lyrics and jammin' beats. It just underlines and reiterates the incredible artistic tales of this dude. I will say that this is my first CD from him as I have bought only single tracks in the past - and definitely will not be the last. Thanks Justin, for a totally kickin' and rockin' album. LOOOOOOOVE it. Definitely blasting this on the way to Vegas!

When I first got the CD as a gift, I only listened to the songs I had heard on the radio. One day I decided to sit down and listen to the entire thing. With the exception of maybe two songs, I love the CD. Second time was much better than the first. Good job!!

Curtains is an entertaining play within a play, as well as a "whodunit" new musical comedy featuring one of the last scores by legendary, Tony Award-winning songwriters John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago, New York, New York). Starring David Hyde Pierce (Spamalot, "Frasier") and Debra Monk, the Curtains original Broadway cast album is produced by nine-time Grammy Award-winner Jay David Saks.

Sadly, Curtains is the final entry in the long and fruitful partnership of lyricist Fred Ebb (who died in September 2004) and composer John Kander. While the show doesn't reach the heights of the team's previous masterpieces, such as Cabaret and Chicago, it's certainly a lot better than, say, their middling 1997 offering Steel Pier. Deliberately old-fashioned (it even features a real overture, something that's fast becoming a rarity), Curtains is a whodunit rolled into a musical--or vice versa. Set in 1959 Boston, it takes place backstage at a singing-and-dancing Western corker titled Robbin Hood. Someone gets killed, and a show tunes-crazy homicide detective (David Hyde Pierce) is called in. The plot is just a pretext for a series of very entertaining, characteristically brass-heavy songs that may not have the bite of old Kander and Ebb but are still very catchy. Above all, Curtains is (both thematically and stylistically) a love letter to old-school showbiz, and it's delivered on a silver platter by a cast of pros that includes the aforementioned Hyde Pierce, Kander and Ebb habituée Karen Ziemba, endearing Jason Danieley and, a notch above the rest, Debra Monk. Unsurprisingly, she chews the scenery and spits it right back in a pair of rowdy numbers: "Show People" and "It's a Business." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The show which spawned the OBC album was no "Producers", in fact it reminded me a lot of an old show "Crazy For You". The music was pleasant and one of the cast members has a wonderful tenor voice. Other than that the score is forgetable.

Isn't it great to have an other show by Kander and Ebb who have giver us such
pleasure in the past. The cast are perfect not one dud in the whole pack.
I can thoroughly recommend this show to everyone with a love of musical theatre

In the tradition of good old-fashioned musicals that entertain for entertainment's sake comes this terrific, witty, clever, fun musical with a top notch cast and some swell songs. We were lucky enough to see this show several weeks ago. And as grand as it is to watch-- it is super to listen to as well. David Hype Pierce is totally terrific, as is Debra Monk. Karen Ziemba and Jason Daniely are first tier performers as well. The show moves along at a great pace, consistently entertaining. There are some wonderous Kander and Ebb melodies--maybe not on par with Cabaret and Chicago--but nonetheless still extremely good. Everything about the CD says high quality. It is well recorded and the performances are excellent. If you get a chance to see the show, grab the chance! If not, you can still enjoy the show with the playing of this CD. Highly recommended!!
