Tomorrow will be brilliant..........2007-01-03
Múm's debut album is subtle in its excellence, but hypnotic when its at its best. The Ballad of Broken Birdie Records will surely tickle your spine and leave you gasping for more.
The future is oh so bright...
Igloo Magazine's REVIEW.......2005-12-01
Review by: R_Garcia, Igloo Magazine (www.igloomag.com)
(10.09.05) I will begin this review with a paraphrase from the included one-sheet: "This album was recorded very shortly after me and Gunni met Kristin and Gyda and became a four people band... It was originally released on an Icelandic label called Thule but early on a number of disputes came up which ended up dragging on for many years... We have the rights for the record back now and are really happy to be re-releasing it on our friends label where it seems to fit in like home."
If not for that disclaimer, one might take this re-release as new compositions from Múm (which I accidentally did when I tossed the CD in my car's player without reading a word.) If this indeed was to be a new release for Múm, it would most certainly be a step back. The sound quality is not exactly on par with what a Múm fan might be used to, and the major-scale over clicky-click beats thing has been beaten to death by a zillion aspiring laptop rockers in countless indie and net-releases for the last five years.
But... this release was recorded in 1999, which if memory serves, was around the time that the clicky movement was first being born (that would place Múm at the vanguard, where they belong.) This disc also provides a candid look into the Múm toolbox; the clean, patient sounds, ethereal keyboards, live instrumentation and pulsing rhythms are all there in infancy, offering up a missing link in the evolutionary story of Múm.
Highlights are "Asleep on a train" which features a hypnotic drum loop, melodica, and bells weaving in and out of a sinewave bass and water-drop melody; "The Ballad of a Broken Birdie Records" which highlights a wispy female vocal over lethargically crunchy clicks and synths; and "Sunday Night Just Keeps on Rolling" which forces the user to wait in anxiety for six of eight minutes before delivering an ejaculatory, up-tempo, bit-degraded drum rush.
All in all, this disc will find its way into my car collection and will most definitely get spins alongside other Mum discs like Summer make good and Finally we are no one. It will also serve as a stopgap until the next collection of new Múm tunes is born.

quaint, homespun electronic songs.......2006-06-11
mum's mysterious world revolves around childlike melodies and tranquil, haunting homespun electronica. there are some very beautiful moments gathered within these songs that reflect a sense of childhood memories and innocence. although this is a good cd, it's not something that i find myself listening to all that much. it has it's moments and for what it is...it's nice. recommended for fans of Plone.
musical imagery.......2005-05-05
my love of electronic music is endless, and though my collection seems the same, i always felt like there was always one album missing.
i first discovered múm with 'finally we are no one', which was a very accessible album that showcases all the unique elements of múm's style: electronic, traditional, and vocals. next was 'summer make good', which in my opinion had a much darker feel to it and moved into a more traditional and less electronic style with more vocals, although still equally as good. finally i obtained a copy of 'yesterday was dramatic today is ok', and i finally felt that the missing piece in my collection had been found.
'yesterday...' is on the other end of the spectrum from 'summer make good', in that it is much more electronic driven while still retaining the qualities that make múm so distinct. the whole album creates a beautifully psychedelic, dreamy recreation of the space between dreams and waking consciousness. as other critics of múm have stated, their music is very reminiscent of (fleeting) memories of childhood, and this album is especially moreso than the others. each song stirs up mental imagery so vivid that it's rivaled only by aphex twin's 'selected ambient works vol. 2'. the standout tracks are 'smell memory' and 'asleep on a train', which absolutely take you to another place entirely.
if you have the opportunity to get a copy of this album, don't hesitate. it is a must have for any electronic fan... even worth the pricey import cost. this album delves into areas of your mind that you didn't know existed. highly recommended.
Get it on Vinyl too.......2005-05-03
Mum make us chill, light candles and drink heaps of red wine. We are out like a light after that. Just kidding. This is certainly danceable stuff and I recommend this is you like Bjork, Sigur Ros or Dada Pogrom. It is kind of light and fuzzy though. You will smile your way through it, right to the cash register.
music fan.......2004-11-09
LOVED IT....the opening track had me hooked....and the electronic percussion always gets me...so........with the nice melodies in the backround....I would reccomend playing this cd while sippin a cold one...watching the sunset...
Something wonderful in a sea of mundane..........2004-06-02
There is a lot of music out there that is really good. Unfortunately, it is surrounded by all sorts of filler. Like anyone that heads out in to the hills with a tin pan and a dream, I have spent a ridiculous amount of time searching for musical gold. This is one album that qualifies. It is the type of album that I will put on when I am in the mood for chilling out with a nice glass of scotch and a book. It is mostly instrumental, and takes a couple listens to get the feel for the flittering beauty it lays out. A lot of people have compared this band to Sigur Ros but, other than being from Iceland, it is not a fair comparison. Having said that, if you are the type of person that likes Sigur Ros, you will probably like this album (don't expect it to sound like them, though).

Great..........2005-07-20
yesterday... is an album that takes a few listens to get used to, but grows on you extremely quickly. I am a great fan of the band and i think this is thgeir best realease, deffinately much more experimental and less mainstream than "finally we are no one".
My track reviews are as followed:
I'm 9 today - 9.5/10. a nice feel, with a simple tune that grows to a nice climax, quickly gets you in the mood to hear more and is one of my favourite tracks on the album. Quite electronic.
Smell Memory - 8/10. an almost dancy track, in a way. It is hard to distinguish much the exact tune, but the drums keep the tune intresting for the whole track.
There was a number of small things - 9.5/10. a dreamy tune that is very chilled but keeps you listening, the last minute or so is well worth it and is a great climax. another favourite.
Random Summer - 7/10. not really a song, more a filler but is very realxed and has some interesting sounds, although having no percussion it is quite a nice track.
Asleep on a train - 7.5/10. quite different to the rest of the album, quite loud percussion but a very nice tune with a range of different sounds, interesting but not one of my favourites.
Awake on the train - 8/10. A constantly changing song. simillar to asleep on a train. a nice sound but the tune is a little rough for me
The Ballad Of The Broken Birdie Records - 8.5/10. A relaxing song with an interesting beat, the singing is in almost a wisper but is very soothing, a little repetitive but all in all, a nice song
The Ballad Of The Broken String - 8.5/10. very different, very strange but enjoyable and builds up nicely over the song, much less electronic sounds here and has a nice feel to it , repetitive but never boring.
Sunday Night Just Keeps On Rolling - 10/10. wow...... i love this song, ablsolutely unskippable, brilliant. so calming ,so amazing. i listen to this song so much but i have never got tired of it. i enjoy it more every time. definately my favourite track on the album. hear the song and you will know what i mean. the climax is brilliant, and it builds up extremely well. i haven't heard a song like it.
Slow Bicycle - 8.5/10. a fitting end to a brilliant album, maybe a little long but it has a beautifully simple melody and is another great song
Overally i give the album 5 stars, which i feel is well deserved. yesterday.. is a lovely, varied and beautifull album which is consistantly good from start to finish.
Listen to it more than once.......2003-07-15
Boy, the first time I heard this album, I hated it. All I could see in it are the cliches of IDM; the bizarre instrument selections (in all the songs), the part where the notes seem to be picked at random (the end of Asleep on a Train), and songs that are too repetitive for their own good (Random Summer and Slow Bicycle). After hearing much praise for this album after looking into it a little more, I decided to give it another try. After the second listen, I had totally changed my mind. I'll tell you why point by point. The instruments selected for this album are quite unusual, but give the album a unique feel and often turn a somewhat ordinary melody into something more interesting. The strange note progressions on some of the songs (most notably Asleep on a Train) are a little jarring on first listen, but I find that they complement the warmer melodies that they are played on top of. As for the repetive songs, well, I have really softened on Random Summer. It is repetitive, but very short and, you have to admit, it does sound pleasant for the short time it's around. It's a good interlude, nothing more. Slow Bicycle on the other hand, is really long and there's just no need for it on this album. The rest of the songs on the album have so much going on in them, they didn't need to add a boring song onto the end. Anyways, the real strength of this album is in its catchy melodies, most noticable on I'm 9 Today and There Is a Number of Small Things. What I like about this album is how the songs, especially those two, are so warm where most IDM is cold and calculated. Now, I wouldn't call myself a fan of IDM by any stretch, but I always find myself giving it another chance, and at least with this album, I'm glad I did.
Pure Magic.......2003-06-05
Unlike another reviewer, I feel like Mum's music might just be life changing.
I heard them for the first time by accident on an excellent radio program called "Spinning on Air" with David Garland on WNYC in New York. Contrary to WNYC's typical weeknight classical music schedule, they will play some groundbreaking and original music on Friday nights. One such friday night last summer, they played and interviewed one of the most wonderful bands I've ever heard, Mum.
I have been fascinated every since.
Both of their albumns are absolutely magnetic. They will gently lull and sometimes assertively lull you into a musical fantasy land where everything is beautiful and just a little bit off center.
Even the frightening and lonely music is at the same time comforting and lovely.
Mum's music is at the same time incredibly new and incredibly familiar.
I feel as though they are true artists hitting upon a greater truth with their work.
Somewhat (and underdine the somewhat) related to the following:
Brian Eno: Music For Films
Boards of Canada: Music has the right to bear children
Sigur Ros: ()
In a way I hope you don't check them out because I like thinking that I'm one of a few people to know and appreciate them... but that just isn't fair.... to you or Mum.
If anyone out there reading this knows of any other music that could be conisdered similar to Mum, please post it!
Electronic Music with Mass Appeal.......2003-03-23
I'm not normally fan of electronic music, especially of the mellow variety, but I love this album. Why? Three words: It Is Beautiful. Songs like "Smell Memory" and "Awake on a Train" are stunning and evocative. I realize that not everyone will like this, and the hefty price for importing may turn some off, but I encourage all to give it a chance--even if you dislike all other electronic music you hear, there's a good chance you'll still like this.
beautiful.......2003-02-21
Beautifully sensual bleeps and scratches. Imagine Aphex Twin in love. Seductively mellow, thought envoking and most relaxing.
