Muddy Waters had his second coming 30 years ago, when longtime friend and disciple Johnny Winter and his Blue Sky label returned him--after a series of listless recordings aimed at the rock audience--to the raw, powerful authenticity of his timeless Chess material with a series of powerful albums. Beginning with 1977's acclaimed Hard Again, a subsequent tour produced Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, recorded onstage in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia with Muddy's band, Winter, and harmonica player/vocalist James Cotton. Enough live material remained for Legacy to release an expanded version with an entire second disc of unissued concert material. It seems even that wasn't the end. This collection returns again to those remarkable concerts, featuring Muddy on five tracks, among them a rousing "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Trouble No More," "Caldonia," and the closing "Got My Mojo Workin'." Winter and Cotton are no less powerful, Cotton redoing Jackie Brenston's hit "Rocket '88'" and Winter ripping up John Lee Hooker's "I Done Got Over It" and "Mama Talk to Your Daughter." --Rich Kienzle

What an awesome album! It is great to hear these live performances by Muddy, Johnny, and James back in the heyday. This album is a must.

5 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: ?WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU MIX, MUDDY WATERS, COTTON & WINTER? ANSWER:" OLD-TIME COOKING BLUES!".......2007-07-14

This cd is a new release of a concert tour in 1977 with Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter and James Cotton. I vacillated for days before I bought this. I have deducted, that listening to the thirty second sound bites, are worthless, especially when making a decision on electric blues. In 30 seconds, the guy might not even be done tuning his guitar! I'm going to attempt, to help you, not to have to go through, the anguish, that I went through, before I made the decision to buy this cd. First of all, you can tell how much these three guys like each other. Since this is a live performance, you hear them kidding each other throughout each song. One guy sings: "Your mother ought to know..." And one of the guys not singing lead, is yelling: "Yea tell em!" or you hear enthusiastic screams like: "Ow!" "Yea" "Do it James!" "Do it Johnny", etc. I personally think James Cotton, and his mind blowing "harp" (For you non-experienced blues neophytes, that's his harmonica! Please make a note of that!) steals the whole show. That magic harp of his, is either screeching, scratching, waling, and always cooking. If I were to try to draw a verbal picture for you, of the type of blues these fella's are playing, I'd say, think about an old black and white detective movie, and you're inside a bar, smoke is slowly circling its way to the ceiling, and in the background you hear the blues. That's the kind of blues on this cd. James Cotton, when he's not blowing the "harp", showcases a voice, that sounds like its seen, a lot of cigarettes, a lot of whiskey, a lot of women, and left it with the blues. This entire cd, is old-time "roadhouse", feeling good, blues. There are 11 songs, totaling just under sixty minutes. This is a classic taste, of old-time jamming, ELECTRIC BLUES, with the "harp", being the pulse, that never misses a blue beat! Buy this!

5 out of 5 stars As wonderful as you'd expect.......2007-06-14

They were only together for one album and tour, but the Hard Again band was the most kickass assemblage of blues talent there has ever been. They simply never played anything, either live or in studio, that was not of extraordinarily high quality. This disc absolutely smokes, and it's a welcome treat that Cotton and Winter each get a couple turns on lead vocals. It's very encouraging that there's still this much great stuff left over after after the two disc edition of Muddy "Mississippi" Waters, because that means there's likely more on the way.

4 out of 5 stars Bringin' It Back.......2007-06-14

Muddy Waters' work on Chess Records from the late 1940s to the early 1970s is truly amazing. He was the most powerful blues artist and one of the best songwriters. Many fans think he was in decline in the mid-1970s when "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down" was recorded. This concert document should dispel those thoughts. It might have taken Muddy longer to build up a head of steam, but when he got rollin', he was as "mannish" as ever. With old pal James Cotton blowing away on harp and Johnny Winter (who ignited Muddy's revival by producing his later records on Blue Sky Records) as his co-stars on the 1977 tour, Muddy was pushed to the heights he regularly reached in his 1950s and 1960s heyday ("Pinetop" Perkins on piano, and Bob Margolin on guitar also shine). The live version of "Can't be Satisfied" - the second cut on the disc - is as strong as any live recording in his career. I saw this band at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. and the three stars were on fire and having a whale of a time. When I bought "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down," I thought, "there is no way this recording will be as good as I remember the show." But not to worry, it's all here and hearing it again made me smile at the memories of Muddy, James, and Johnny pouring out electric blues. A rousing "Got My Mojo Working" (the encore) finishes things up nicely. Someone once said, "In Muddy Waters' hands 'the blues' is a misnomer."

Have some friends who still haven't discovered what the Sarah Brightman fuss is all about? You'll find the perfect introduction to make converts of them all in Classics, so they'll have no more excuses to remain clueless. Sporting a Botticelli-inspired image of the platinum-selling soprano on the cover, Classics is a classy anthology including highlights from three of Brightman's chart-topping releases along with seven new tracks. Songs personally selected by the diva as her favorite classical interpretations are culled from her previous blockbusters: Time To Say Goodbye, Eden, and La Luna. And whether you're a fan already in the fold or one in the making, the new material here shows the diva at the top of her form, in new renderings of "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Nessun Dorma" (accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic)--fascinating displays of the operatic confidence she's developed over her career. Other new offerings include a touching version of Schubert's "Ave Maria,' "Winter Light," a fresh take on her signature song "Pie Jesu" (from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem). "Alhambra" and "Dans La Nuit"--a real treat, bathing the listener in Brightman's silky, sensuous vocalism--add two original titles to her famous adaptations of classical melodies to new lyrics (using Chopin's haunting E major Etude in the latter case). All told, a lovely affirmation of the directions Brightman has boldly taken in her career to date. -Sarah Chin

5 out of 5 stars Sarah's Best Easy Listening CD.......2007-03-15

Sarah Brightman's talent is limitless. Her soprano and/or alto voice is among the best and she lets it show in 'CLASSICS'. CLASSICS is a beautiful, easy listening, and peaceful CD. CLASSICS is one to listen to in tranquil or relaxing moments. "CLASICS" is a collection of great pieces of music written by great composers (Shuburt, Handel, Chopin, Puccini, and the like). I have listened to CLASSICS about 15 times now and it always puts me in a quiet and peaceful mood (I am ~50 years old).

5 out of 5 stars Best Brightman CD.......2007-02-07

A classical composition which showcases the beautiful voice of Sarah Brightman. A timeless CD which will continue to be a favourite over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah Brightman is a Classic.......2007-01-02

Sarah Brightman is at her best in "Classics." From Dvorak's "Rusalka" (Opera B.203) to Beethoven's haunting Op 52, slow movement (Symphony #7), Brightman's voice and lyrical style are a joy. I particularly enjoy her performances of Schubert's Ave Maria and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Pie Jesu. This is a great add to my collection of serious music.

5 out of 5 stars Not The Best - Not the Worst - From Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-30

After purchasing this CD for my iPod for iTunes, I must say that I'm a little bit dissapointed. 7 new recordings and 8 old ones, ones that I already happen to have. I do like the fact that they're all on one CD! Some of her new recordings, including, "Ave Maria", "Winter Light", "Alhambra", "Dans La Nuit", and the new recording of "Pie Jesu" are just too breathy for my taste. It seems as with every changing CD, Sarah's voice changes. I'm not saying that the result is bad; it actually gives the songs more of a dream like quality, but I'm used to the younger, more Andrew Lloyd-Webber integrated Sarah. Scooping continually occurs in new recordings of "O Mio Babbino Caro", and "Nessun Dorma". In some tracks from La Luna, like "Figlio Perduto", Sarah's voice is TOTALLY dominated by harmonizing recordings that sound almost mechanical.

OVERALLY - The new songs sound O.K. and the old recordings are just as good as they were back then. This album is still a great buy!

3 out of 5 stars Nice Cover.......2006-12-27

I'm a heterosexual guy who's not an opera aficionado - I only mention these facts because I seem to be right in the bull's-eye of the target market for this product. Sarah B. has a nice voice and she's pretty. Both of these are featured prominently on this CD. The cover and several pages in the insert are devoted to what must have been a very long and expensive photo shoot (and Photoshop) of a semi-clad Sarah looking marvelous. (The CD also comes with a flyer so you can buy various Brightman "Classics" apparel - perhaps not for the heterosexual male).

As far as the music goes: not bad, not great. I don't claim to have the most discerning ears for this sort of music, but everything was OK by me. However, the pieces on the CD with which I'm somewhat familiar, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro," didn't sound quite as good as other versions I've heard (and that includes by Charlotte Church, not just opera stars). Also, the solo version of "Time to Say Goodbye" didn't sound nearly as good to me as the duet with Bocelli.

In sum, there were 3-4 songs I liked enough to rip to MP3s - which is enough so that I didn't feel ripped myself...

Not to be confused with the collection Songs Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia, this album is Harry Gregson-Williams's instrumental score for the movie. Marking the composer's third collaboration with director Andrew Adamson (after both Shrek flicks), this score also is one of the more mature offerings from Gregson-Williams, best known for his work on family films. The music is lush and assured, if a bit predictable. Indeed, it fits squarely in the current style popular for big epics--even using (on a few tracks) the vocals of Lisbeth Scott, which fall halfway between those of Enya and the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser (both of whom, uncoincidentally, appeared on the Lords of the Rings soundtracks). The CD concludes with four songs, with Gregson-Williams cowriting Scott's "Where." On "Can't Take It In," Imogen Heap's vocal acrobatics eerily recall those of the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan, while Alanis Morissette's "Wunderkind" is an inspirational, almost girl-powerish track written from the point of view of the movie's Lucy. But the best of these songs is "Winter Light" by Tim Finn, four minutes of understated, piano-driven melancholia. Look for it tucked near the very end of the CD. Note that the soundtrack comes also as a two-CD special edition . The second disc is a DVD that includes galleries of film stills and concept art, a featurette about the recordings of the score and a making-of featurette. There's also a segment in which the (mostly) Christian bands involved in the Songs Inspired by... album talk about their involvement in that project. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This movie was a big success at our home. We saw it at the local theaters and decided to buy it upon release. We also have purchased other copies to give to friends.

We look forward to the future movies of the other 5 books.

5 out of 5 stars Depth of quality.......2007-05-20

I enjoyed the soundtrack immensely, except for the last three songs which have vocals. This is much better than the movie. I just wish they would list the companies would list the musician's that performed the music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant minds.......2007-03-14

This is one of the best soundtrack I've ever listened to.From the serene "Lucy Meets Mr.Tumnus"to the soaring theme found in many of the tracks,Harry-Greggson Williams does a masterful job at creating a magical Narnia.I listened to this nonstop when I first got it,and I still listen to it more than any other soundtrack.
The four(three really, because Winter Light is utterly detestable)songs at the end are reason enough to buy this CD."I Can't Take It In" is brilliant with Imogen Heap's incredible talent."Wunderkind" is so artful and expertly written,it has become one of my favorite songs.
So this soundtrack meets all the requirements for a great soundtrack-great theme, amazing creativity, and stellar songs.

4 out of 5 stars Piano, Vocal and Guitar Music from Narnia.......2007-03-10

This book has eight of the songs from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Some of the songs, such as Evacuating London and Father Christmas, include some fairly advanced musical notation. Evacuating London, Lucy Meets Mr. Tumnus, A Narnia Lullaby and Father Christmas do not include guitar notation. However, this is authentic Narnia music, as composed by Harry Gregson-Williams. The first eight pages consist of colored pictures from the movie. The only thing that would make this music book even better would be inclusion of The Battle, which we are still looking for.

Modern choral music for amateur singers may be America's biggest musical underground. That's the only explanation of why Grammy-nominated composer Morten Lauridsen can claim that his works are some of the most often-performed new pieces in years, although few among the East Coast intelligentsia have ever heard of him. Like the similarly popular John Rutter, Lauridsen inhabits an extremely conservative style directed simply and single-mindedly at showing off the beauty of choral singing while it illustrates inspiring texts. Unlike many of his fellow neo-Romantic conservatives, Lauridsen displays a brand of conservatism that is completely convincing and sincere. His music also has range, from the spellbindingly rapturous Lux aeterna to his playful settings of Rilke's poems about the beauty and thorniness of roses in Les chansons des roses. There is, moreover, a Coplandesque streak heard in his Mid-Winter Songs, which are settings of poems by Robert Graves. Though the Los Angeles Master Chorale has a suitably red-blooded sound, the music would be better served with more precise diction. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Review of Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna/Salamunovich, Los Angeles Master Chorale.......2007-05-13

This is a fabulous CD! I have sung at least one of the compositions on the CD in a choral society to which I belong. I am also familiar with the composer and love his music. The Los Angeles Master Chorale is a wonderful music group!

5 out of 5 stars So beautiful that it hurts........2007-04-27

Two days ago I had never heard of Morten Lauridsen (shame on me). Our local PBS station (WITF in Harrisburg, PA) opened its morning show a few days ago at 9 AM with his lovely "Sure on This Shining Night," a segment of a poem by James Agee. I could not work for an hour after hearing it. Students entered my office and left quickly at the sight of my dazed look. I immediately purchased three recordings, and this one, "Lux Aeterna," is my favorite. The music is so beautiful that it hurts.

Buy this album now. The music is truly exquisite. The performance is outstanding. The CD is a masterpiece. After one hearing of Lauridsen's "Lux Aeterna," I tell you the truth: I could not sleep the entire night. The music was with me all night, and it continues to resonate through my soul.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-06

Excellent recording - Lauridsen music represents the best choral composers of this age. This CD captures as many of his best compositions as one can expect - Great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-02-17

I purchased this CD a couple of years ago when my daughter was working up a couple of Lauridsen works for an audition recording she was doing for her college application (she got in). Besides the sentimental association with that time, this CD has remained a treasured part of out listening library. These are truly 20th century masterpieces of choral music. The recording is among the very best of any type that I have heard. Even if you don't normally like choral music this is a CD to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious, but not Perfection.......2007-01-20

Morten Lauridsen has a style as distinctively recognizable as Mozart or Beethoven--if you have heard or sung a few of his works, an unfamiliar title will still sound like an old friend. I have to admit I love the aural world which Lauridsen creates.

This recording displays Lauridsen at his best--the long-standing working relationship between the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the composer give these performances an authority and credibility which would be the envy of any group. The Chorale voices display a depth and maturity (particularly in the Bass and Alto sections) which I miss in college choirs, yet the control is perfect.

The works are recorded in the Sacred Heart Chapel of Loyola Marymount University--a very live acoustic, which contributes to the wonderful sense of blend and sonic depth in these pieces. This sonorous glory does have a price, however. The wonderful texts are quite frequently muddled a bit. The enunciation and diction are not as clear on this recording as one might have expected from this group. That is a small cavil, however--intonation and interpretation are flawless.

Buy this, put it in your CD player, turn it up, and enjoy it. If you love choral music, you need to own this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for milling about to on a long, hot summer's day........2007-05-08

One of the most striking things about Fields' debut album "Everything Last Winter" is the power of the guitar work, which impresses from the outset.
Both Jamie and Nick have the happy knack of fusing some powerful and psychedelically tinged guitar riffs with occasional shots of early 1970s folk that work well in tandem with the boy and little-girl lost vocals.
Several tracks begin softly only to explode into thrilling life; others merely deliver a pleasingly breezy listen that'll doubtless be perfect for milling about to on a long, hot summer's day.
Fields have, of course, been hotly-tipped for greatness since releasing their critically-acclaimed and much sought-after EP 4 "From The Fields".
Since then, they've won many friends during support slots with Editors, Snow Patrol and Bloc Party.
They hail from London and are comprised of Nick Peill (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Thorunn Antonia (vocals/keyboards), Henry Spenner (drums/vocals), Matty Derham (bass/keyboards/vocals) and Jamie Putnam (guitar).
Fortunately, they make good on their potential with debut album "Everything Last Winter", a rousing collection of songs that marry the exciting brashness of early Ash with elements of My Bloody Valentine and the wonderfully psychedelic qualities of America's Joy Zipper".
Things kick off in suitably stirring fashion with the signature track "Song For The Fields"; Peill's vocals taking centre-stage early on while the guitars build from folksy and acoustic to driving and electric.
By the time Peill and Antonia team up to deliver the chorus of "you're not the only one", the song should have you hooked and just keeps getting stronger and stronger.
It's followed by former single "Charming The Flames", another track that begins with simple melodies and laidback, almost serene vocals, before exploding to life for a rousing, guitar-driven finale.
"You Don't Need This Song (To Fix Your Broken Heart)" is a fine example of the band's folkier tendencies and a perfect summer track in waiting thanks to its breezy style.
But it's followed by the altogether more lively "Feathers" which pretty much launches into some more emphatic guitar chords from the outset - and then places Antonia's vocals to the fore.
Together with "The Death", they represent the sound of Fields at their most angry and confrontational - but such moments only give rise to more thrilling guitar riffs.
It's a measure of the group's strength, however, that much of their music is steeped in classic songwriting values - strong sense of melody, strong sense of structure and plenty of layerying.
Many of the tracks aspire to epic greatness and several reach some thrilling highs that have already given rise to some equally memorable live performances.
Further highlights include "You Brought This On Yourself", a hypnotic charmer that swaps the fire of "The Death" with something altogether more shimmering and nicely melodic.
While it's a neat trick to introduce the sound of birds singing to the intro of "Skulls and Flesh" and "More", a track so steeped in summery qualities that it practically makes a mockery of its Goth-like name!
"If You Fail We All Fail" comes alive with some vibrant guitar work before album closer Parasite eases you into a more relaxed place with its folksy hooks, cinematic strings and tender boy-girl vocal duet.
It offers a supremely satisfying finale to an album that genuinely impresses from beginning to end.
"Everything Last Winter" is a flowing album and there is very little driftwood.
In a perfect world, Fields would be musical royals.
There is so much to enjoy - in every track. But you also worry that their sort of musical bag has had its day. Retracing the steps of bands such as Chapterhouse, MBV and Slowdive will definitely have its pitfalls.
The difficult follow-up record will be key to their longevity.

5 out of 5 stars I will never forget...........2006-10-19

That day in 1969, I bought this album, put it on my hi-fi, and found out what blues guitar was all about. This is one of a handful of albums that I always have kept close at hand and updated. I saw Winter live in 1970 in Columbia, SC. He had then picked up Rick Derringer and was touring about the South with The Allman Brothers. I will never forget the sight of Winter thrashing about the stage his fingers a blur of white lightening: His pale skin and white hair were so exaggerated because he was otherwise totally dressed in black. What a show that was. Until this album was released, I thought I had heard what rock/blues guitar sounded like via the albums of Cream, Hendrix and the like...but for my money, if it's pure, nasty, sliding blues guitar you want, you won't do much better than this album. It's a classic sounding as good today as it did 37 years ago; it's truly one of a kind. This is definitely an album for anyone who loves the blues and wants their collection to be complete. This is a no brainer...

5 out of 5 stars 37 years later!.......2006-10-04

I bought this album in 1969 when I was in high school, and I was completly blown away. By the time I graduated from college I had pretty much worn it out. This year I "rediscovered" it on CD. It's still one of the best examples of blues guitar I have ever heard, and I've been listening to it at least once a week for the last 5 months. I'm still trying to figure out which version of "Dallas" I like better. (The next album I bought was BB King Live and Well, but that's another story).

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album!.......2006-06-26

Johnny Winter is quite simply excellent on guitar and vocals, John Turner and Tommy Shannon Round out his trio solidly and guest appearances from Water Horton, Willie Dixon and John's brother Edgar make the music excellent. The songs "I'm Yours and I'm Hers" and "Dallas" are quite different and both great, excellent sound quality and liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Now for some serious blues guitar.......2006-03-10

Thanks to the reviews that came before mine. I had been looking for a Johnny Winter cd (having nothing by him) and the reviews on this page convinced me to start here.

Glad I did. As a guitarist I am blown away by Winter's approach to the blues. No compromises to the current music scene going on in '69. This guy just brought the serious, serious blues to this album. He burns through a set of standard blues songs leaving the listener dumbfounded.

His brother, Edgar, joins him on a couple of tunes with keyboards and horns. Most of the songs are performed with just bass and drums backing up Johnny's guitar.

The sound of this remastered cd is incredible. I still have a hard time believing this was recorded in 1969. The only let down - it's kind of short. But that's not a real drawback. It's so good you'll just put it on replay or shuffle.

Along with the original album artwork you get a short but informative write-up on what led up to the recording sessions for this debut.

If you're a fan of Hendrix, Page, Clapton, and Beck and haven't heard Winter then this just might be like Christmas day for you.

5 out of 5 stars Mess'n With A Fool.......2005-09-25

I bought this LP in 1969. I then toiled for hours teaching myself how to play the lead in Messn with a fool. The technique, tone and style of JW at his peak is still unsurpassed. The music is simple put JW's guitar is a hurricane unleashed. His singing is also excellent. This man is no rock n roll blues afficionado. This man is the real deal.

4 out of 5 stars Only ONE thing could have made this a better CD..........2007-01-10

This awesome rock & roll album would have been even better had it included just one thing: the SINGLE version of "Free Ride", available on the "Edgar Winter Collection" from Rhino. It was the followup single to their huge hit "Frankenstein". Like Three Dog Night and a few other artists back in roughly that same time frame, a trip back into the studio was made to create even hotter versions of the songs to be played on the radio. The single version of "Free Ride" is just that much hotter, that much punchier and that much more full of life....and was a huge hit itself! One listen and you'll see what I mean. I'm not saying the album track isn't good...I'm just saying the single version just jumps right out at you, daring you to resist it. As for the rest of the album, I can't say anything that most of these other reviewers have said. One of the best of the 70s, full of great rock & roll music and a pure joy to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars Monster Album!.......2006-11-26

Arguably, Edgar Winter Group's best album, this chart topper fused standard rock with `monster rock' and plenty of synthesizers. Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer cut loose with these self penned songs. "Hangin' Around" and "Alta Mira" are fun dance rock numbers that portray Winter at his best. "Free Ride" and "We All Had A Real Good Time" became FM rock standards with their `party on' style. Not to pigeon-hole themselves as purely hard rock, "Autumn" is a rare and unexpected ballad showcasing the groups songwriting skill. Of course, "Frankenstein" was the monster hit here and it combined a new found use of loud drums and maximum synthesizer along with unique guitar riffs and Winter's own splendid saxophone. It's a killer album that stands the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable! Exciting and Yet Oddly Charming.......2006-07-17

I had really ever only known about Edgar Winter from their occasional spots on classic rock radio, with their tunes Frankenstein and Free Ride, never really thinking about what other type of music they made and shrugged them off as no more than a one-hit wonder.

But one I picked up the album about six months back and have listened to it probably fifty times through. It is very hard for myself to start playing it and switch to something out on my playlist without listening to it in its entirety. While none of the songs in my mind (except for Frankenstein) truly stick out (which is possibly why it is not more well known,) the album gels together as a whole so well that few albums match it in terms of pure consistency.

While many of the songs seem simple in appearance, the instrumentation, the dynamics, and the full-blown singing of the more uptempo songs give a level of sophistication, yet remarkable, fun sound to each and every song, all the while staying unique from every other. Added to this, is the even more surprising fact that the two love songs, Round and Round, and Autumn, are two of the most beautiful songs to ever come out of a rock album, let alone a hard rock one.

Hanging Around is one of the best openers one could ever hope to have for an album, infectious, fun, spirited, truly awesome.

When It Comes is possibly the raunchiest sounding Edgar ever sounded (if that's really him singing, I'm not really sure since it sounds as if there are nine different voices singing each of the songs with lyrics), other great, fun sounding song.

Alta Mira is very quirky, yet charming song that you can't help but sing along to. Has an almost Jamaician sound that makes it all the more infectious.

Free Ride needs no explanation, as it's impossible to live past the age of 10 and not have heard the song at least once.

Undercover Man is probably the only weak song on the album if only for the ending which I think it stretched out just a bit too long. Although, it's Edgar in very fine form in terms of loud, almost off-kilter singing.

Round & Round is possibly my favorite song on the album, with its wonderful mix and acoustic and almost country-rock sound. Beautiful.

A ridiculous change of pace from Round & Round (although that's not a bad thing.) The song is basically self-evident from the title... Rock and Roll Boogie Woogie Blues. It delivers perfectly.

Autumn, as said before, is quite possibly the most beautiful rock song I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Beyond gorgeous.

And almost lastly, another huge change of pace with quite possibly a song that perfectly exemplifies the college spirit (woot), with We All Had a Real Good Time. If there's a better song out there that keeps the fun, youthful spirit of us kids and of the basic tenets of Rock n' Roll, I've yet to hear it.

Well, if you're not convinced, then its at the fault of this reviewer and not the album.. for it is truly one of the best hard rock has to offer. Better than anything Skynyrd or Ted Nugent or Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin has to offer. And that's no lie. A wonderful standout from 1972 (although it's difficult for me to say that definitively, since I was -13 at the time.)

5 out of 5 stars A classic Rock And Roll Masterpiece.......2006-07-07

I purchased this album only yesterday and have listened to it over and over again. This is truly one of rock's few masterpieces. Hangin around is a fun opening song. Alta Mira is a nice rock and roll song. Free Ride is great well mixed too. And who could forget Frankenstein the masterpiece of masterpieces this is the best song in the whole world. You will be happy with your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Album..............2006-03-13

About the time this record came out, but before I ever heard of it, I saw the EWG at a roller rink in Elizabeth, NJ with my friends. They opened up with "Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll" but unlike the White Trash version with horns, it was dominated by Ronnie Montrose' raunchy guitar and I fell in love. I went as soon as I could to Korvette's, where I bought most of my records in those days, to get the new LP that Edgar mentioned while on stage. I took one look at the cover and said, "What is this......" I was happy that I bought it and I still go back to it frequently. In fact, I am probably in the minority here, but "Frankenstein" is my least favorite song and I usually skip it. But listen to all the other songs, starting with "Hangin' Around" and "When it Comes" and you will be hooked quick. The slow ballad "Autumn" and the latin sounding "Alta Mira" sound different, but all the tracks add up to one of the greatest LP's ever recorded. In my opinion, Edgar Winter never reached this level again.

5 out of 5 stars Second Winter is "First" in My Book.......2007-04-03

Awesome follow-up to Johnny Winter. As amazing and great as the previous album is, I have to give Second Winter the edge with regard to preference. This two-disc "Legacy Edition" is broken into two parts-
Disc One- The original LP + 2 bonus tracks
Disc Two- The legendary previously unreleased Live At The Royal Albert Hall concert recorded on April 17th, 1970.

The sterling remastering on disc one and the treasure that is disc two make this a must-own for anyone interested in late 1960's blues or hard rock.

5 out of 5 stars SIX stars--indispensable for all blues-rock fans!!.......2007-01-13

This album is the greatest re-release ever in the history of rock--period! Not only is the studio (original) portion of Second Winter an absolute gem, the live recording newly added here is even better! This package goes right alongside the Allman Brothers Fillmore East recordings as the greatest blues-driven rock guitar music out there--long overdue! Johnny will blow you away with his smoking guitar chops and soulful singing. And when he starts the intro guitar solo to B.B. King's "It's My Own Fault", you would swear you were listening to B.B. himself! The rapid-fire licks he throws off during "Mama, Talk To Your Daughter" are wicked.

A young Edgar Winter joins him onstage for the last half of the concert to show off his own prowess on keyboards, sax, drums, and vocals. Also a talented guy, no doubt. Sometimes his screechy falsetto gets a little old--that's my only gripe on this whole package. But's it's not enough of a blemish to take away from this being the most indispensable release of the past few years!

If you've seen Johnny Winter recently in concert, you know as well as I that he's past his prime, bless him. Well, Second Winter is his prime, for sure, so if you're not too familiar with early recordings of Johnny, you are sorely missing out. Miss out no more, and get this CD package!!!

Prior to hearing 'Second Winter,' one of my favorite electric Blues tunes had been when then-unknown Johnny Winter joined Michael Bloomfield on stage at the Filmore East and played an unbelievable 11 minute version of BB's 'It's My Own Fault.' I highly recommend getting your hands on that, but the slower 12 minute version included here is equally as good. It really showcases Johnny's amazing ability to combine lightning-fast speed with deep, emotion-jarring blues. This Cd validates that Johnny was one of the best Blues-Rock guitarists during his prime era. Another great blues track on this CD set is the live version of the classic 'Mama Talk to Your Daughter.' If you're looking for more great slow blues by Johnny, look for 'Be Careful with a Fool,' 'Life is Hard,' and 'You Keep Saying that You're Leaving.'

By teen-pop standards, Aly & AJ make a bold move on on their first holiday album and second disc. Instead of fizzing up the figgy pudding or decking the hall with a bunch of flashy hip-hop beats, they play it straight--"Silent Night" is justly peaceful (heavenly, even), "Let It Snow" lands as softly as a blanket of the newly fallen white stuff, and "Joy to the World" holds up its heartfelt peace sign by way of classic old-fashioned carol-crooning. Clearly the girls got a little giddy going through their parents' holiday music collection while conceiving this disc, and clearly they were thinking beyond its commercial prospects (how many underage starlets would challenge their cash-strapped core demographic with "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"?). Yet Acoustic Hearts, apparently, do not beat by yuletide sincerity and good-girl harmonizing alone--in an overt but not unlikable nod to the teen need to kick out the holiday jams, Aly & AJ let loose on three tracks: "Deck the Halls" gets into a George Michael-inspired groove, and two originals--one happy ("The Greatest Time of Year") and one sad ("Not This Year")--plumb the meaning of the annual sugarplum dance to semi-rockin' beats. -Tammy La Gorce

I got this cd on Christmas day,so I enjoyed it all day! I kept listening to it well into January. Although, I wish the cd had more up-beat songs. I thought their re-makes would be edger, but it help capture the true meaning of Christmas. They even wrote two of the songs on this album, " Greatest Time of Year" and " Not This Year" this song is about how it's okay not to be in the Christmas spirit when something really awful happens to you, you can cry. You should get this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Album.......2007-06-28

This is one of the best live rock/blues preformances I have ever heard. Johnny was at the top of his game!!

3 out of 5 stars Good but a little overrated .......2006-12-31

I don't mean Johnny is over rated cause he wrote the book . The Sound quallity is a little lacking on Live And ... Derringers Guitar is a lot Lower in the mix than Winters .The song list is good but better on other live albums like Walking by my self and Lone Star shoot out .There are great versions of JJ Flash and JB Goode on here . A drum solo and a full lenghth guitar spotlight solo arn't really needed here , there are to many other songs they could be jamming on .
I saw johnny and Edgar at the 97 show they recoded in NYC , Johnny and Edgar dual back and forth Edgar on Sax Johnny ,guitar. Loud and Clear

5 out of 5 stars Katie, Bar the Door........2006-12-26

This is one of my top 10 favorite rock guitar albums of all time. The energy captured on this live session is unbelievable. Rarely have I heard 2 guitarists propel and counter one another like Winter and Derringer do here. Sure some of the material is overly familiar (Johnny B. Goode, etc), but after hearing these versions of the songs, most others pale in comparison. Tight and driving stuff here. Check out this rhythm section!
Considering the deluxe treatment recently given to Second Winter, I can't help hoping that the PTB will see fit to offer a remixed and expanded version of this recording...and SOON.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like it on the planet.......2006-11-20

One of my huge regrets in life is not being at this concert. Missing Cream at Fillmore West is the other.

That being said, if you own 2 rock CDs, this should be one of them. It is one of the top five rock albums of all time and the hardest of the Johnny Winter albums, played when he was at his absolute peak. Not only that, playing off with Rick Derringer at his career peak, and the solid bass of Randy Jo Hobbs, and the driving intensity of drummer Bobby Caldwell will kick your body and head and leave you breathless, gasping for more. You WILL replay it, louder.

Every song is excellent, from memory: It starts with Good Morning Little School Girl, an old Chuck Berry song gone berzerk. Next is the most perfect rock 'n roll song - ever, period: Jumpin Jack Flash. OMG! C. Michael Bailey from All ABout Jazz says, "Jumpin' Jack Flash is as final a statement in Rock Music as can be hoped for". Or might I add, possible. It starts fast and rises perfectly to a peak and then comes down to just the right place. Next we're gonna slow things down and do some blues for ya - yeah, right: Its My Own Fault: The rhythm is blues, but the guitar is blazing fast. How does he do that? Next is the Rock 'n Roll Medley, a rising intensity of insanity thinly masquerading as three old rock 'n roll songs climaxing in a guitar explosion. Mean Town Blues is next, are you ready for it? No rest for you yet - A nine minute flaying of your sensibilities, the pace is laid down by a relentless Caldwell and wired over with almost sadistic guitar work. The drum beat increases in speed and ferocity to near insanity. Johnny B. Goode is last, but not least; a fast riff on riff slamming the album's door shut in your face. There isn't a mistake in the whole album, just an intensity that most guitarists can't even dream about.

These boys are the best; at their best. And they'll leave you breathless and wanting more.

Well?

4 out of 5 stars GREAT ROCK AND ROLL.......2006-05-25

JOHNNY WINTER HAS HAD SEVERAL PHASES TO HIS CAREER. THIS ALBUM DATES BACK TO THE EARLY 70'S, WHEN HE WAS PLAYING STRAIGHT AHEAD ROCK AND ROLL, WHICH HE HASN'T DONE NOW IN OVER THIRTY YEARS. WHILE HIS LATER AUTHENTIC BLUES MUSIC IS GREAT, THIS ALBUM JUST GOES TO ANOTHER LEVEL, WITH ITS HARD DRIVING RHYTHM, AND SCREAMING GUITARS (WITH RICK DERRINGER). IF YOU LIKE ROCK AND ROLL YOU WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM.
