5 out of 5 stars Nadas - Tranceiver.......2005-09-18

Great album, first heard some of it on "Pinks" on Speedchannel.
Nice guitar work. I think these guys would be great live as there is no high tech garbage, just good tunes performed well.

5 out of 5 stars The Nadas top themselves once again..........2005-04-12

I saw many of these songs at Taste of the Quad Cities 2003, before they were released, and the only thing this album cannot do is encompass how good their stage shows are. Drowning kickstarts the album with a thick oldies sounding riff, but goes start to finish with great stuff. If they came out with a greatest hits record today, about 7-8 of these songs would be on there. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have CD!!.......2004-02-14

Transceiver is a great CD!! It is a must have in every collection. A great Valentine's Day gift for your loved one.
The Nadas should be the state band!

5 out of 5 stars Des Moines Finest.......2003-06-16

The Nadas just might be one of the best things about Des Moines. Being a Des Moines native, I have seen them play countless shows and seen their popularity skyrocket over the past few years. They are a Des Moines institution. There is nothing better than a summer concert with The Nadas rocking by the river. This new album brings a new sound to the Nadas (partly because of the addition of the new bassist John Locker). They have taken their folk rock sound and updated it with a slightly harder/more electric sound. Long time fans, don't be worried, they still are same ol' Nadas, our local hometown heroes.
I reccomend this cd to anyone who digs the following people:
-counting crows
-John Mayer
-Sister Hazel
-O.A.R.
-Jason Mraz
-anyone else like those guys

OK, there's no way around it. Pennywise often sound an awful lot like Bad Religion. But in some ways Pennywise's biggest flaw is also their greatest strength. The band's melange of power and melody suits them well, making songs like "My Own Country" and "Victim of Reality" as engaging as Bad Religion cuts like "You Are (the Government)" and "21st Century Digital Boy." Indeed, Pennywise's penchant for hooks maximizes the impact of their more bombastic material, allowing them to play at blistering speeds without dissolving into a dissonant blur. "Can't Believe It," for instance, pummels with hard-core beats and buzz-saw guitars, and still manages to incite uncontrollable bouts of grinning and head bobbing. And when Pennywise find a groove, as on the metallic anthem "Can't Take Anymore" or the harmony-laden "Alien," they're one of the most captivating pop-punk bands on the indie circuit. --Jon Wiederhorn

    5 out of 5 stars 200 bpms!.......2007-03-16

When the punk rock ska thing was big in bricktown, nj this was the first album i was introduced too. This cd would pump me up to go surfing in the winter at seaside when the water and air were both in the 30s. Classic punk power chords, hyper punk beat drums, poignent lyrics sung well. The album is long and hard to listen all the way through unless youve had a few cups of coffee, but dont quit at track 9 every song deserves to be heard and appreciated, take an interlude if you need too. You will not be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars "Go Straight Ahead".......2006-03-26

Following Jason Thirsk's tragic death in 1996, Pennywise released what is probably their most popular (and darkest) album in 1997 entitled "Full Circle". And after having conquered their demons with their previous release, where would they go from there? Well "Straight Ahead" is indeed the answer, because it's apparent with this release that the band was moving straight ahead. This record serves as a perfect means for Pennywise to get back to what they were always known for, and that is writing edgy, energetic punk with a positive message. And did they ever return to form with "Straight Ahead". Fans of the band will be more than pleased with the quality of this ability, and if somehow it has been skipped before, this is one of the most essential albums Pennywise has put out to date.

What needs to be said about these guys that hasn't already been said? Speedy punk riffs, powerful vocals, fast drumming and great song writing are what they have always been about, and "Straight Ahead" showcases that perfectly. Songs are a lot more positive this time around and less concentrated on death like their previous album "Full Circle". There's something for every fan of their sound, as they continue to pull out political messages ("My Own Country", "American Dream"), passages of positive thinking ("Straight Ahead", "Still Can Be Great") and social issues such as peer pressure and alienation ("Alien", "Watch Me as I Fall"). Musically they are still one of the best punk bands around, and every song shows that. Fletcher continues to write catchy yet aggressive riffs and coupled with Jim's voice, the band keeps their signature sound in tact. Byron and Randy of course back the band in true fashion and make sure the album is just as full of energy as any of Pennywise's discography. This is probably the only 17 song album that is a breeze to listen to straight through and never gets repetitive. Not many bands can claim a feat like that.

What's most impressive is that Pennywise (who have been around for the better part of 17 years or so) continue to put out album after album of amazing songs, when other bands have come and gone in the same time period. For their fifth official album(they have since turned out 3 more, bringing the grand total to 8) the band showed no signs of slowing down, and continued to prove why they are one of the greatest punk bands of all time. This album is essential to all Pennywise fans, and in all rights is probably in the top 3 for the best of the band's catalogue. It was great to see that Pennywise was able to move on from Jason's death and return so triumphantly. In all rights Pennywise could have ended in 1996. But "Straight Ahead" is a testament to the band's determination and ability to write absolutely astounding songs. As the titled track says, there's nothing left to do, but "Go Straight Ahead."

5 out of 5 stars To mister Jon Wielderhorn.......2004-11-11

You don't know what you're talking about, man. Comparison is the worst form of judging a band (and art, for that matters). I hate when people criticise something using a comparison as the strongest point of their views. This is ridiculous. Althoug BR is also an awesome band (even older, maybe wiser and a direct influence over every hxc band such as Pennywise) you can't say they sound like PW. If you do think so, then there's something wrong with you and you shouldn't be allowed to review albums like this. If you have an oppinion, then it's OK. But never compare. Yes, they are fast. They are melodic. And they're the best on what they do right now.

This album is epic. 17 songs of pure power tearing apart the walls of conformity like no other punk release. Unforgettable songs and yelled vocals which will make you jump without control. This is Pennywise.

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO PENNYWISE!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-02

I actually give this album(and Pennywise)10/5 stars. They are a perfect band. They are great musicians and their lyrics are raw and relate to real people. This is by far my favorite album, there is not one mediocre song on here. Badge of Pride is one of the all-time great punk songs and a Pennywise classic. They have never sold out and always stay true to their roots. so many of my favorite Pennywise songs are on this album, it's hard to count, but here's the top 5-Badge of Pride, Can't Take Anymore, Greed(Byron's drumming is out of control!), Straight Ahead, My Own Country, and American Dream. Buy this album, you won't ever regret it!

4 out of 5 stars The most radio friendly album.......2004-09-28

You can say that Pennywise sold out because they had a couple of singles, "victim of reality" and "Alien", off this album. The truth is that even though this is a little slower album in some parts. It is probably the most branching out that Pennywise is going to do. Most of the songs are still very aggressive and the lyrics are always meaningful. I think this is a very good follow-up to Full circle which is a good album. Best songs: "Greed", "my own country" and " badge of pride"

Nowadays there are those who prefer their shot of Basie with some kind of mix. Perhaps it will be a vocal group such as the Mills Brothers, as in The Board of Directors or Annual Report. On other occasions and other labels it could be a solo vocalist, a rock singer, a set of Disney tunes or current pop hits. This time, as the album title makes unmistakable clear, there is no mix. This is Basie on the rocks.

Another fantastic remastering of Basie music. Anyone who really knows what Basic sounded like will find this CD most rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Basie at His Best!!! .......2005-09-05

When this album was recorded, Basie had just finished about seven years of collaborations with singers, vocal groups, and rock stars, all with varying degrees of success. His orchestra even recorded two albums of Beatle tunes. However, this album put Basie right smack dab in the middle of where he belonged, in the world of straight ahead swing (as the title so aptly discribes). All soloists are high level and very much in the style and tradition. The drumming of Harold Jones is impeccable, and sparkling. This album has become a classic, for all of the before mentioned reasons. It is stongly recommended for all Basie fans and especially jazz ensemble directors around the world. We should all be indebted to Grover Mitchell, the lead trombone player in the band, for introducing Basie to Sammy Nestico, the composer and arranger for the date and for many others to follow. Their collaborations become the most important and significant since Basie worked with Neal Hefti from the mid-fifties to early sixties. Nestico's compositions are very substantive and his arrangements have never been better. Check out how he developes the arrangement of "It's Oh So Nice" from a four note melody. GREAT, GREAT ALBUM!! FIVE STARS!!!!!

    -Clarence Acox, Seattle WA.-

    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT BAND!!.......2001-05-13

This is probably Basie's best band and Nestico the best writer/arranger he ever had. Harold Jones does some fine drumming along with some great musicians like Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Charles Fowlkes, and Freddie Green just to name a few. The Count even playes the organ on "That Warm Feeling". What you hear on this cd is just plain good music played by the best.....Count Basie. Well worth owning!

Unguarded was my first Amy Grant album, purchased in 1985, and it's a very good album. ----- BUT, on a song-by-song breakdown, I have to give the "best album" credit to her previous release Straight Ahead.

This album has hit-after-hit-after-hit, plus great songs to make you reflect upon your life & your goals. 10/10 good songs.

4 out of 5 stars STRAIGHT AHEAD, track by track.......2005-05-29

"Where Do You Hide Your Heart": a great song, and a musically advanced CCM song for its day

"Jehovah": this is probably the best song on this CD; has a great message and some addicting music

"Angels": if you need to hear mid-80s pop CCM music, listen to this song

"Straight Ahead": nothing I can say about this one, it's just a great song

"Thy Word": a very powerful message; the music fits just right

"It's Not A Song": probably the only non-religious song on this album, still a great song

"Open Arms": I don't know why this song was written because it really doesn't say anything

"Doubly Good To You": truly a masterpiece, just as powerful as "Jehovah"

"Tomorrow": if this song was a poem, it would be a great poem

"The Now And The Not Yet": I never really understood this song; nevertheless it's a great song

Overall: STRAIGHT AHEAD is the best thing to buy if you want to hear how CCM sounded in the mid-80s. Had this been released instead of UNGUARDED, it could've been just as successful.

5 out of 5 stars Get back to where you once belonged.......2004-12-10

This was the first Amy Grant album I ever listened to and, I think, still the best. All of the songs were enjoyable and theologically deep. She sang like one who believed in what she was singing and the messages behind the songs were a true blessing to everyone who heard. And they still are today.

I have two personal favorites on here. One is "The Now and the Not Yet" (written by Pam Mark Hall), about the waiting period we are now in while we anxiously await being with Christ for all eternity. The song echoes Paul's lament from I Corinthians 13. "Now we see in a mirror dimly...then we shall see face to face...Now we know in part...Then we shall know fully." (I'm paraphrasing here since I don't have the Bible open in front of me.)

My other favorite song is "Doubly Good To You" (written by the late, great Rich Mullins). This song is perfect for when you've had a rough day. The lyrics are classic Rich Mullins:

When you look in the mirror at the end of a hard day
And you know in your heart you have not lied
If you gave love freely and you earned an honest wage
And if you've got Jesus by your side

You can thank the Father for the things that He has done
And thank Him for the things He's yet to do
And if you find a love that's tender
If you find someone who's true
    Then thank the Lord
He's been doubly good to you!

4 out of 5 stars Amy with a ROCK voice.......2004-05-09

this is the first album i ever listened to, and i still listen to it. its inspiring. i think its cool how she sings,i like the synthisizers and guitars too.
she doesnt sing like on this album anymore, but she is still awsome!

4 out of 5 stars Complex Pop and Issues.......2004-02-22

First album to show Amy's songwriting complexity, and true heartfelt pop sensibilities. So many gems besides the popular Thy Word. Use of synthesizers is creative, but would love to hear songs like Where Do You Hide Your Heart updated without so much 70s-80s synth. Thank goodness for Rhodes beds on the driving It's Not a Song and Open Arms. And piano on the standout and touching Doubly Good to You written by Richard Mullins.

The whole second half of the set moves emotionally and musically to the thoughtful The Now and the Not Yet. The "realness" of her voice quality and interpretations come through. Easy to understand why she would soon be doing duets with Peter Cetera, etc.

From the late 70's until now, Larry Gatlin has been an absolute favorite of mine. This CD is full of Gatlin's best vocals; rich, melodic and soulful. His "Midnight Choir" brings tears to my eyes and every song on this CD is pure enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars It Does Not Get Any Better Than This.......2004-04-13

Greatest Hits albums by definition are generally a good way to go, most are populated with hits and songs that have received radio air play. This album is no exception all the tracks are good some are even great, to mention a few, Love is Just a Game. Broken Lady, Night Time Magic, I Don't Wanna Cry, ok I admit it, I like them all.
Straight Ahead is an outstanding album. With the huge hit All The Gold in California (their signature song), two of my favorites, Piece by Piece and We're Number One and a big request at live shows, Midnight Choir, this collection has something for everyone. It has the country band sound of the late 70s and early 80s and features the songwriting talents of Larry as well as the tight harmonies these guys are known for never evidenced more than in the bonus track I'v Done Enough Dyin' Today.
The Brothers retired from the road in 92 but in 2001 embarked on what they call The Neverending Reunion Tour which they claim will go on until it doesn't. If they aren't appearing near you you can also catch their act in Branson during the Fall and Christmas Season.

5 out of 5 stars Straight Ahead Lives!.......2002-09-07

Straight Ahead is by definition Larry Gatlin's masterpiece. The music gives listeners a taste of two different types of music: 1)Larry's conventional folk music and 2)VERY dated late 1970s country music sounds. If you're a fan of the orchestral sounds behind country music you'll love this album. It features Gatlin's hit "All The Gold In California", "Mogen David", and my personal favorite "We're Number One". Gatlin retired to Austin, Texas where he owns a clothing store and can frequently be seen on a church broadcast on Sunday mornings in the Austin/Central Texas area.

1 out of 5 stars NOT AMY LEE OF EVANESCENCE!!!.......2007-06-16

Judging by the items in "people who bought this cd also bought..." apparently I'm not the only one to think that this was a side venture by the lead of Evanescence.

IT IS NOT AMY LEE OF EVANESCENCE. ITS SOME OTHER JAZZ PLAYING AMY LEE.

Chances are, if you like Evanescence, you're like me and you don't like elevator music.
So, whatever you do, don't buy this! Buy the OTHER one by Amy Lee.

5 out of 5 stars Great Eclectic Jazz debut!.......2004-11-26

This CD ranges from smooth Jazz to traditional Jazz quartet, with some R&B thrown in for good measure. Amy is truly a talented performer, and always surrounds herself with the highest caliber musicians.

    1 out of 5 stars P.S........2004-11-15

Just so people know...this Amy Lee isn't from Evanescence.

P.P.S. I did not buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Jazz...you will love Amy Lee.......2003-12-28

For afficionados of beautiful saxophone music...this is an album to enjoy.

The ability to infuse the mood of the song into the listener is rampant in this collection. It may be jazz, but some of it is mellow, some of it is sexy, and some of it is romantic. For easy-listening...you can't go wrong with Inside the Outside.

Danny Stiles is by far the greatest trumpet player that has ever lived. Please note, the proceeds from sales of this do not go the musicians or their families.

Bill Watrous is the smoothest, most talented trombone player out there today. It is such a joy to listen to his music. If you like jazz, and if you like the trombone, then buy this album -- and his others, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Trombone and Trumpet Pyrotechnics of the Highest Order.......2002-03-03

Bill Watrous has been woefully underrecorded in his brilliant career, and this reissue is like manna from heaven. He and the late great Danny Stiles on trumpet tear it up on the composition Don't Tell Me What to Do, with a killer introduction of the late Milt Hinton's walking bass followed by a brilliant opening solo by the marvelous Hank Jones on piano. Then listen to Steve Gadd's brilliant drumming on a blazing version of Lester Leaps In. Danny Stiles hits the Maynard Ferguson stratosphere with his burning runs up the scale, and then Watrous ignites it further with a breakneck solo only he could play that cleanly. I still have the LP, and I'm thrilled to have a CD that won't wear out. I defy anyone to not start finger snapping and hip shaking while listening to this CD.
If you like your brass hot and blazing, GET THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Famous Door re-issue.......2001-09-03

This is a re-issue of a recording Watrous and Stiles made in late 1972 and early '73. The playing is first-rate as Harry Lim assembled an all-star group for the session including Al Cohn on tenor sax, Milt Hinton on bass, Hank Jones piano, and Steve Gadd on drums. Despite this recording being nearly 30 years old it doesn't sound dated. The ensemble is tight as can be and of course the rhythm cooks! Watrous' superb technical facility and Stiles' range are highlighted throughout. It is always interesting to hear alternate takes and this recording features 2 takes on "Don't Tell Me What To Do", a Watrous original. My only complaint is that it is only 38 minutes long, even with the addition of the second take. But I admit I never get enough of great music.

5 out of 5 stars The Mother Lode for this Wonderful Artist.......2004-01-20

It has been 30 years since I listened to this on vinyl. I still consider it to be one of this artist's best. Her interpretations of "Blue Monk" and "When Malindy Sings" simply are unforgettable, and "African Lady" demonstrates her very strong tie to the third world. Ms. Lincoln to me is second-generation Billie Holiday. She doesn't have the widest range or the purest voice, to be sure, but what she has is the biggest heart. She comes to the table and brings it with everything she has, and in the process, creates something original. Buy this one, then one of her early '90's classics, such as "The World Is Falling Down" or "You Gotta Pay the Band", and prepare to be mesmerized.

5 out of 5 stars hangin' on from year to year..........2000-10-12

This is widely recognized as Abbey's finest album, and I'm happy to see its back in print again. Not long after this recording her musical career was put on hiatus--apparantly no one would touch her in those troubling political times--a crying shame, as it means more albums of this caliber were not to be. (Her later recordings do hold up surprisingly well, however, quite "smoky" still, as my friend put it.) A stunning, powerful album with gutsy vocals that indict the many injustices of the day [and are still relevant]. Impressive back-up band includes Coleman Hawkins, Julian Priester, Booker Little, Max Roach. A Thelonious Monk cover with some fun lyrics. "Malindy" is the obvious classic; "Straight Ahead" and "African Lady" are two of my other favorites. A long way to go for a former supper-club singer... Maybe they'll reissue her album with then-husband Max Roach, "Freedom Now! Suite"...

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Straight Ahead.......2005-09-05

This was the sixth of eight Prestige family of albums Nelson recorded (March 1961). As with all his work for the label, these are solid performances. The up-tempo STRAIGHT AHEAD might be the highlight of the CD, while the medium-slow blues (the only blues piece on the album) is also excellent. All the tunes are originals (typical for a Nelson recording session), and all are distinctive. The rhythm section [Richard Wyands (p) George Duvivier (b) Roy Haynes (d)] is solid and Dolphy is, well, Dolphy. (I liked him a tad better on the SCREAMIN' THE BLUES Prestige album with Nelson and a lot better on THE BLUES AND THE ABSTRACT TRUTH.) A very nice album.

5 out of 5 stars A tragically underrated player, a rightly heralded composer.......2005-07-31

Oliver Nelson has always gotten what little respect seems to be available for jazz composers. However, his playing is often not mentioned and this is unfortunate. Listening to Mr. Nelson's solos is to get a glimpse into the process of composition. In Mr. Nelson's solos there is a level of logic and compositional thought occurring that is rare in jazz. Thinking of other players in whom this trait is evident, Sonny Rollins comes to mind. Oliver Nelson lacks the technical wizardry of Mr. Rollins, but in some ways that makes it even easier to hear his thought processes.

That being said, Mr. Nelson probably wouldn't make for a very interesting album on his own, but he more than makes up for it by playing alongside Eric Dolphy. The contrast in this case is delightful. Where Nelson restrains himself, Dolphy let's fly with his trademark flurries of notes and very vocal style.

The rest of the band is strong too, providing a very solid base for the soloists, and navigating their way through the superb compositions with aplomb. Roy Haynes' drum work is particularly noteworthy here. It's sad that this album is not better known, because it has all the elements of a classic, great composition, a strong appreciation for the blues and a diverse collection of brilliant soloists backed by an outstanding band.

    5 out of 5 stars It Works!.......2004-09-19

At first glance I didn't think this front line would work. Certainly Eric Dolphy's slashing frenetic style of playing would not work well with Oliver Nelson's more mainstream bluesy approach. But not only does it work, it works very well indeed thank you. At times it's fascinating to compare the two styles; at other times it's amazing how well they compliment each other. One is also reminded what an adventurous musician Nelson was. Another treat is hearing Dolphy on bass clarinet, an instrument not heard much in jazz. And while we're discussing treats.....a big treat here are Nelson's compositions especially the mysterious "Images" and the bluesy "Six and Four." Richard Wyands contributes some smooth piano work while bassist George Duvivier and drummer Roy Haynes hold everything together. Duvivier's presence is especially interesting to me. Somehow I think of him as being more of a mainstream player performing with the likes of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. It just goes to show what a versatile player he was!

4 out of 5 stars You may as well get the Dolphy Prestige box =).......2004-07-09

I'll start by saying that this is not the issue of Straight Ahead that I own. I have this as part of the Eric Dolphy Complete Prestige box-set that I reviewed here however many years ago, which was remastered more recently than this issue. So, my review is just on the performance and the quality of the album, not the sound.

I love this album! It will always stand in the shadow of Blues & the Abstract Truth because unlike Abstract, this album isn't packed full of as many of the big names in jazz, but don't let that fool you. This is also a classic album.

There are times here where Dolphy swings like a demented circus performer, and Nelson is (as usual), dripping with blues and soul. The tunes are great and the performances milk every last drop of loveliness out of them. This is one of those albums where I tend to think that no jazz collection could be considered complete without it.

5 out of 5 stars When Dolphy's On Board, It's Never "Straight Ahead".......2000-11-04

"Straight Ahead" is the third and final collaboration between tenor saxophonist and noted arranger Oliver Nelson, and iconoclastic reedman Eric Dolphy. The first was Nelson's "Screamin' The Blues" also on the Prestige label, and the second was the famous "Blues and the Abstract Truth," recorded for Impulse a week earlier than "Straight Ahead." On March 1, 1961 Nelson and Dolphy went into the studio for the third time, along with Richard Wyands on piano, George Duvivier on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Five of the album's six tunes are Nelson originals ("Ralph's New Blues is a Milt Jackson composition), with "Images" and the title-track the standouts. The results were magical on this session, but not quite as impressive as the Impulse date. All the same, fans of Nelson and Dolphy will enjoy plotting this course "Straight Ahead."
