2 out of 5 stars Hed Kandi - Mark Doyle = Forgettable..........2007-05-19

I absolutely loved the first three installments of this series, but since it's "rebirth" last year, I've been completely disappointed with the selections. Apart from a few good tracks (Koop, Aim, Kenneth Bager), this compilation is pretty lackluster. I've been waiting for another Winter Chill album since 2005, but with the direction Serve Chilled has taken since Mark's departure, I can only imagine that it would also be a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Serve Chilled Returns.......2007-06-14

I was a pretty vocal advocate of Hed Kandi's "Serve Chilled" series. I tried out a few of their other compilations too, Winter Chill and Beach House specifically. But neither really grabbed me the way the Serve Chilled series did. Maybe it was because of the time I got the first one... towards the end of 2000, I saw it in the Virgin store in Vegas while there for business and picked it up having recognized S-Tone Inc. and some others. I loved volume one and quickly became a fan of volume two before volume three ranked amongs my favorite compilations. So hearing that "Serve Chilled" was returning, I was very happy about the decision.

After all of that, when I checked this one out, I wasn't really disappointed but it didn't pick-up where vol 3 left off some 5 years ago. It starts out nice enough with a great 4Hero track (those guys are quality!) and the Lars Bartkuhn track is a nice surprise too. It wasn't my favorite track of his (Treasure Everywhere is) but I like Lars' music and his approach. But then there's pretty cool soulful track by Secret Stealth that has a neat beat and feel to it. Very promising start! But that's really it for disc one IMO, outside of the interesting "Crazy Girls" which gets you more for it's originality.

Disc two comes on and I'm taken back to the fantastic disc twos of the franchise. This one starts out well with Henry Mancini's "Lujon", a song that was done over by a few "chillout" groups in the early 2000's. I want to say it was "Ocean Beach Cybophonia" by Black Mighty Orchestra. Another stand-out was Crazy Penis' (horrid name, I know) "Sweet Feeling". The name and the song together... pretty poor. But it is a nice song. Sandboy's "Viver", given a remake by Butti 49 is very nice and laid back - a real throwback to the great times in the series. Sung in portuguese but with a real modern vibe to it and splashes of orchestration. It's been on a few other comps too. Finally, Defender's cut was alright... a bit redundant after the first minute and it ultimately goes nowhere. But it has a unique sort of mid-80's feel to it.

So this was a decent return for the HK Serve Chilled Series. But like all the other releases of theirs that I own, it's got loads and loads of filler that drag it down. In fact it follows the blue-print of its predecessors perfectly... mediocre disk one with a few stand-outs and superior disc two that still has a few crummy & boring songs. But HedKandi's approach was always top rate - they didn't follow the run of the mill series' bent on making a quick buck (even though they still want to) like M.O.S. or Ultra. The songs are always the full edit and there's no cross-fading here - just full tracks which always gives the series a full star in my book. 3.5 stars - a good summer album, but be very wary of the filler & it's not as strong, in the end, as Volumes 1 and 3 which are sadly out of print.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-04-13

I really like this CD. It's great background music for a cocktail party or just studying and relaxing. I've had comments from party guests about the music I was playing. They liked it too. It isn't good for driving music because it will put you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic chill/ambient/background music.......2007-04-05

I know this is an expensive import, but it has 2 CDs full of great music.

5 out of 5 stars JfromNY.......2006-08-31

If you're looking for a great chill, poolside, or even a great evening late-night low -key album this is it. I have 7 Hed Kandi CD's and this is my favorite, along with, but a totaly contrast to, the twisted disco set. I can't recommend this album enough.

5 out of 5 stars Glad it's back.......2006-08-07

I bought the new Serve Chilled album. Like the other reviewer below, it was nice to have something different after Hed Kandi's last few dance albums, which have been a little disapointing. I like that Hed Kandi is now bringing back older compilation series that I thought were long gone. Now if only they could bring back Deeper, I would be very happy! Serve Chilled is a nice collection of chillout tunes that are more upbeat than the dark and acoustic tracks from their Winter Chill compilations (which I also love). Nice summer listening!

Imagine '60s London dolly birds Lulu or Petula Clark fronting a power-punk trio of the Ramones school and you get a good sense of where Visqueen is coming from. Seattleite Rachel Flotard, like the aforementioned '60s thrushes, knows the score, but she doesn't waste time keeping score. The compassion of "My House" (she volunteers her home as a place to stay "because you've found a friend in me") and "Last to Know" (in which she professes to be "sorry that you're losing your heart and your dreams") seem genuine and refreshing. The unaffected spunk of Flotard's hook-filled songs are powered by chugging riffs and high-octane support from former Fastbacks bassist Kim Warnick and drummer Ben Hooker. The catchy likes of the slashing "Vaxxine" ("Take the sting out of my heart") and the punny "Omaha" ("You and me are mutual like Omaha") signal the arrival of a band that's smart, tart, and open hearted. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Visqueen rocks out!.......2005-03-06

If you are too pretentious to enjoy good rock music, ::looks at negative reviews and coughs loudly:: then you probably shouldn't listen to this album.

If you like to rock out, if you like catchy melodies and harmonies, thought provoking lyrics, and just like to listen to GOOD music, then you should definitely listen to this cd.

I don't listen to corporate radio, and this is really the first time that I have been excited about a band in a very long time. Obviously it is hard to put the energy and vitality of a live show into a studio recording, but they do a very good job of it. For me, it is the type of CD that I liked the first time, but like it more and more every time I listen to it.

All of the tracks are really good and all could have easily been chosen as a single. I would recommend heading over to their official website, www.visqueenonline.com, and checking out the video for Mrs. Elder, a great song, and listening to the mp3s available here on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Power Pop is Alive and Well.......2004-09-30

From start to finish an excellent offering. Is it possible to wear out a CD? I'm going to find out with this disc. Also, don't miss them live. Rachel restored my faith in rock and roll.

pardon me for retreating to an overused phrase, but:

This CD ROCKS!

Short Review - Great stuff, buy it now!

If you're not sure, check out the free downloads - they are very representative of the sound of this group.

Longer review:

If you like up-tempo get off your ass and rock music with fun lyrics, great hooks, great harmonies, jump out on the dance floor, flail-your-arm air guitar (or in my case, air bass), rock-out music, this is a CD for you.

buy this CD now, hopefully you'll encourgage the band to get back in the studio to record their 2nd cd - it'll make ME happy anyway!

The only thing I don't understand is why pop radio isn't all over this stuff, but hey, I grew up in the 60s when all the songs on the radio were 2:38, didn't cuss, didn't degrade anybody, talked about havin' fun and didn't require a phalanx of scantily clad dancers and microphones that sang the songs on their own :).

One thing I do think is Joey Ramone is smiling down on these guys from Rock'n'Roll heaven, knowing the music lives on...

2 out of 5 stars Sorry Seattle.........2004-01-29

I was disappointed with this purchase. "Vaxxine" got me excited for this disc, but sadly, the remaining songs don't compare to the fire of the lead track. Mid-way through the CD I find myself very bored by the uninspired chugga-chugga guitar riffs. On the brighter side, the vocal harmonies are a plus.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Why, Hedkandi, Why??.......2005-09-16

Hedkandi's a label that's known for putting out some cool double disk compilations loaded with full 12" cuts. Through the years they've dabbled with almost any music style that's 'in', from disco, soul, house, trance and even a little latin thrown in for good measure. The Serve Chilled series was actually my favorite of the bunch but Hedkandi probably got rid of it due to overlap - they have another 'chillout' inspired series titled "Winter Chill". However "Serve Chilled" was the one I enjoyed.

I have a strong love for this cd, as I remember when I got it. The songs featured are very strong although I enjoyed disc two far more than disc one. Disc one opens up with some more traditional chill-out ala Hedkandi style. So there's plenty of women moaning and crooning on it. There's certainly some good works included like "Ready for Us", "Day by Day" and even "Always the Sun". Disc two though is where the fun begins with a decidedly more Brazilian vibe. It's a healthy dosage of cool beach and club cuts, kicking off with a smokin' Zimpala track loaded with a true beach style "To the Bass". The version of "La Septima Ola" featured here is much different and more ambient than the one on Los Ladrones feature album titled "Montana Rusa". Beautiful song, very dreamy. Then you've got a killer cut from S-Tone Inc. with the original take on "Arejar". Manuela Ravaglioli... this song and "Ainda Sonhar"... her rich voice just absorbs the songs. "Barabeu" picks it up a bit with a cool tropical beat while "Pandejero" by Cantoma has a steady guitar to it that reminds me of Grupo Batuque's "Taruma". Other smokin' tracks on disc 2 were Atjazz's twistin' and deep house/electronica inspired "Harmony" (love that song & it's beat), Russ Gabriel's amazing cut, "Jelba", and "Wanna Go Somewhere and Chill?". Heck, I even enjoyed the clubby "Sensacao" by Racoon although the cuica was overused!

All in all, I STILL recommend this and wish that HedKandi hadn't given up on this franchise. I loved the first one, enjoyed the second, and really loved the third but on the other hand I didn't really enjoy the "Winter Chill" series which seemed far too 'warbly' (well put, Richard!). Each one of them had a different set of tracks and this one was more latin/Brazilian twinged but very, very good. And remember, the cuts are not cross-faded or mixed & they're the FULL 12" tracks, not the carved up hack-jobs that Ministry of Sound tended to do at this time period (2001). If you dig this, you DEFINITELY want to check out Brazilution edicao 5, Brazilectro 2 & 3, Pure Brazilliance, and maybe a few of "The Chillout Album" releases.

4 out of 5 stars South American flavors save the day with a quality disc two.......2003-04-17

What is it?
As with all Hed Kandi releases, two dozen or so full length records are collected for your listening pleasure. Here 26 "True Chill Out Tracks" are evenly split between Ibiza-level beach chill and (decidedly better) Latin flavors.

And?
Disc one's a bit skimpy: Organic Audio effortlessly offer carefree spirit with their ode "Always the Sun." Fug drop the slow jam "Ready For Us," a breathtaking combination of laid back instrumentation and faint vocal that shows up most of the chiller filler on here. Excepting duos Badmarsh & Shri and Rae & Christian, it's sadly all by the numbers fare the rest of the way. And why is it that Chris Coco can deliver quality mixes but come up short with his own work - here the scratch & vocoder (!) combo "Gemini."

But?
Thankfully disc two saves the day, seeking South America for inspiration. Warm, friendly and lively Latin fare abounds, from sprightly piano nod Zimpala "To The Bass," the soft hues of Bebel Gilberto's multilingual "August Day Song," flute, horn and wordless coo of Los Ladrones ace "La Septima Ola," welcome instrumentals from Cantoma and Butterfinger, with added bonus bossa faves S-Tone Inc. Throw in five more pieces of equal appeal, subtract discordant ape-sound filled duffer "Sensacao's" and you've got one of Hed Kandi's better start to finish efforts.

So?
Why can't the Kandi crew deliver consistent work like this more often? Sort it out folks! Disc 1: 2.5 stars Disc 2: 4 stars

4 out of 5 stars Hed Kandi's Debut Downtempo Collection........2004-11-22

Released in 1999, "Serve Chilled" is the debut entry of Hed Kandi's chillout series, and it appears to have been cast aside in favor of the more popular "Winter Chill" compilations. As is the case with "Nu Cool," Hed Kandi allowed another quality franchise to die, which is unfortunate because this double disc is easily better than the last two "Winter Chill" compilations combined. I searched extensively for this hard-to-get release, and when I finally found it at a record store in Manhattan, I had to grab it while I had the chance. Disc 1 has some of the more familiar names which includes Thievery Corporation's "Glass Bead Game," Nightmares on Wax's "Les Nuits," and Groove Armada's "Dusk, You and Me." But other standouts include the piano-flavored "Resist" by Outside (featuring Karime Kendra) and "Enchant Me" by the Amalgamation of Soundz. Disc 2, however, is my favorite, featuring mellowed tracks that have a jazzy/Latin feel. "Marching On" by Ballistic Brothers, "Who Do You Love" by Jose Padilla, and "Hudson River Revisited" by Black Science Orchestra all have that cafe/laid back feel that's typical in a chillout compilation. Though released in 1999, the material in this compilation of unmixed downtempo jams is still fresh and makes up one of Hed Kandi's best chillout compilations. A smart alternative to the "Winter Chill" CDs.

    4 out of 5 stars Sit Back, Chill-out Tracks.......2003-12-14

This was the first of Hedkandi's "Serve Chilled" series, released back in 1999. It spanned to 3 volumes with the final (and IMO best one) released in 2001. Now, Hedkandi seems to only do "Winter Chill" as their chillout franchise, and focus on Beach House, Disco, etc. What a shame! The most annoying thing about Hedkandi's compilations is the consistency. Like another reviewer stated, they have a lot of room to set the mood but just don't. This is perfectly seen in the first disc, which is very much lagging in consistency adn top tracks. Sometimes it's too slow, or too fast, and then there's a cut here and there where you're left thinking: "What the heck was that?"

But the second CD is much better, as is usually the case with all of Hedkandi's chillout compilations. It mixes a few latin tunes in with Bebel Gilberto and S-Tone Inc. You have a cool Ballistic Brothers cut, and some funky tunes that wind you down with the most notable track being Fourth World's "Silvia" - Brazilian singer Flora Purim is on vocals there.

Hedkandi is cool in that you get the full mixes of tracks, and it's not a mixed dj'd cd. And one thing I do have to give credit for is that some tracks are hardly heard, and they did try to stand-out in a saturated "chill-out" market via the product itself and the packaging. For instance, instead of using the overplayed "Underwater Love" by Smoke City, they used "With You", which is a fantastic tune!

While this one is perhaps a bit old now, there's still some terrific music here and unlike some of the later Winter Chill additions, you don't have the relentless warbling of female vocals - there's variety. I recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars This album delivers.......2001-08-02

Ignore the so-so reveiw of this album unless you are a DJ with an expensive and extensive CD collection or are a music snob who thinks you are too cool not to make pretentious comments about what SHOULD have been on this CD. Bottom line, it delievers what it promises and it's a great compilation, well worth the import price. I first heard this CD when I was living in Europe three years ago and it has held up for me. I have since ordered a bunch of the hedkandi CD's and have not been disapointed yet. If you're tired of buying albums and only liking one or two songs, or don't have the time to research what to buy, this is the easy way out. And even if you have the time to be really really cool, it's still a decent album...

5 out of 5 stars NOON TRAIN REVIEW.......2001-06-06

This is by far the best bargain I've found yet in this category. There is not one bad track on either cd and the music flows effortlessly with no obnoxious tracks to break that perfect buzz. You can press play and walk away with confidence knowing your in for nearly two hours of "the business" This is great conversation/dinner party music as well as those occassions when it's just you and the water bubbling at the bottom of your apperatus. You won't find a better value in the chill category. Especially with Claude Challe bangin' you for 45 beans for his stuff. Enjoy! Peace out!

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, but WAY flawed.......2001-06-04

This collection has a LOT of track room (2 CDs) to get the mood right with, but it doesn't quite rise to the occassion. There's some decent stuff, a few really good tracks, and a lot of cannon fodder.

The problem with a lot of chill-out collections these days is that the genre is still a bit ill-defined; there's a lot of house or trip-hop music with a little latin thrown in to make it "exotic" and it gets labeled "chill-out" or ambient. The genre is fast becoming what "electronica" was in the 80s and early 90s: the genre you put weird stuff in. Unfortunately, a lot of discs suffer from this, and this one is no different in that respect.

There's some genuine good stuff on here: CD 2 #9 Ballistic Brothers "Marching On" CD 1 #6 45 Dip "Lizzie's Balloon" CD 1 #11 Lewis Taylor "Lucky"

...but not enough for you to blow over 20 bucks on just because it's from across the pond. Even when I counted stuff in that was just okay, I ended up with a list of about 9 solid tracks. That's out of 28. That's not good by anyone's count. More focus on chilling or house or latin or SOMETHING, just get the project on the same page next time. I'm not impressed by how big a DJ's collection is, even if it is Hedkandi. I want a solid CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best collections of chilled-out tracks yet!.......2004-04-02

I am a collector of Hed Kandi compilations, and I have to state that this one in particular is definitly one of my favorites. Almost every single track is worthy of a 5 star mention. There were a few tunes included in this compilation that I've heard elsewhere but was not able to find out who the artist was.I would definitly recommend this CD to any true chill-out fan who is in the mood to be blown away my a great mix of music.

4 out of 5 stars Sophomore Slump? Nah..........2004-03-17

Admittedly it was only a little over a year ago that I managed to pick this one up. I was a big fan of the Hedkandi chillout series and even remember where I was when I picked up Serve Chilled One (before catching a bus to the airport in Vegas) and Serve Chilled 3 (in "B" Bookstore on Picaddilly or Oxford on Sept. 12th 2001). Suffice to say that this series has a very special place in my heart - the first was from a great great time I had while the last one through a very difficult time being away from home, with no way of getting home. Both the first and third have terrific cuts on them, and you can tell by the tracks and musicians that the series has changed through the years.

First the positives. The second one is a terrific release too, although the track selections just aren't as strong as the other two IMO. You still have the trademark HedKandi mentality of introducing some artists that may not be so popular "yet", and featuring full uncut versions of the tracks. You have very talented artists like Nitin Sawnhey along with Hedkandi regulars 45 Dip and Afterlife included. You also have some dramatic big tunes by Mr. Hermano and Kinobe (oh, you have to hear this full version of the song - such an underrated artist!) while Ziriguiboom's Suba, Zuco 103 add some Brazilian flair, respectively. With Blue States included along with a whole slew of other great acts like Solar Sides, King Kooba and Morcheeba, its safe to say this is a strong chillout line-up.

The bad? Well, there is still the usual filler tunes that bring down the general quality of some of Hedkandi's releases. And admittedly I found CD 2 to be stronger than CD 1 (as was the case with the other two Serve Chilled Releases). All in all, this one just wasn't as strong as the other two. The first had a terrific mellow vibe with some great acts and CD 3 was all about the nu-brazil tracks with some nice latin beats. If you like this, definitely check out The Chillout Room vol 2. It's pricey (just like this! Wow! I didn't pay half of this for any of them) but with a track selection stronger than this one and it's from the time frame between Serve Chilled vol 1 and this one. It's a double disc set like these are too.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of late night mellow grooves........2001-03-12

Hed Kandi has compiled a second two-disc edition of the Serve Chilled series that does justice to the first. It continues the tradition of mellow grooves that are great for setting the atmosphere. Of particular note are Mandalay's "Beautiful", Morcheeba's "The Sea", and Lux's "Northern Lights". Definitely a companion to the first `Serve Chilled'. Similar offerings are the `Winter Chill' series also by Hed Kandi, the Cafe Del Mar series, and the Om Lounge albums.

5 out of 5 stars Sit back and close your eyes.......2000-10-01

What can I say, Hed Kandi have done it again ! I got home from work, poured myself a whiskey, put Serve Chilled into my player and pressed play. I woke up the next morning in the same couch I had been relaxing in the night before!

Disc 1 has to be my favourite, with tracks that smack of Cafe Del Mar and Mono. CD 2 is even more chilled and of course my all time favourite Morcheeba kicks the CD off with a good swing.

A must for all Hed Kandi Fans !

4 out of 5 stars The Will to Chill.......2000-06-16

Press play, lay back and close your eyes. Float away in the warm summer breeze, and lose yourself in the vast landscape of your mind. And every now and then use the skip button on your remote.

Though there are some absolute pearls here, there are also one or two marbles. The album suffers from a couple of tracks that seem to have been misplaced, and might sit better on a jazz/hip hop outing. Maybe I'm a little harsh but I like my chill to be fully chilled. However one should not be discouraged as there are some truly beautiful tunes.

Disc 1 is definately my pick of the two disks. Recommended listenings include : The Space Bros' "Your Place in the World", Mandalay's aptly titled "Beautiful" and the ulta cool "A Man and a Woman" from 45 Dip. Kinobe's "Slip into Something" on disc 2 is chillingly catchy.

Definately worth buying, if not just for the cool cover and "do not eat" warnings. Gotta get back to work *sigh*
