An awesome party!!!.......2006-03-10
This album is so much fun. For those of you who want to hear what a southside show is all about, this is the album for you. Filled with upbeat, fun, happy, house party type songs, from song 1 to the end you simply can't go wrong with this one. If you are in a bad space in life and need a pick me up, if your having a party and need a cd with the energy to keep everybody up and dancin' or if your cd collection needs a kick in the ass, you should BUY THIS CD!!!!!
Paridise it's not but may have to do!.......2005-04-19
I love early Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes. And the only way to hear them is LIVE. But not on this album. For a really LIVE experience, purchase Live at the Paradise Theatre Boston, Massachusetts December 23, 1978 [LIVE] a seamless recording of one concert, not a mish-mash of different shows, performances, venues, and nights just slapped together with no cohesion like this album. With that said, if you can't find that album at a reasonable price, this one will have to do as for some reason Live at the Paradise is hard to find and people are just plain greedy in pricing this album used on Amazon. If Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes ever come to your town, go see them. They put on a great show and are still touring from time to time and without the high prices of many of todays acts.
A Great Live CD, But Is Roll Out The Barrel Missing As Well?.......2004-08-03
Recorded from several venues, Reach Up And Touch The Sky captures the early 80's sound of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes.
This is a decent release, and sounds great on CD.
My problem with this album is that the songs, while taken from different venues, are not mixed together to create a seamless concert feel. You get a song, then a fade out, then another fade in to the next song, which I find distracting. This is especially evident with the first two tracks, as "I'm So Anxious" fades out with a drum roll, then "Talk To Me" fades in with a starting drum roll. Thankfully this does not occur between all the tracks.
The other complaint about this CD is the removal of the stunning 7 minute version of "Stagger Lee", which I'm sure was due to CD manufacturing standards of the time (CDs made with a time greater than 74 minutes would cause many players at the time to have difficulty reading the last track. This has been corrected on newer CD players.) .Unfortunately, this title is not likely to be reissued with the complete track list from the original LP and cassette.
It appears that "Roll Out The Barrel" is missing as well.
Overall, a good release with some notable flaws.
1. I'm So Anxious - An okay version. Good, but not phenomenal.
2. Talk To Me - High energy. GREAT version of this song with opening rap by Southside. Some interesting comments by South in the middle section of this song.
3. All I Want Is Everything - An absolutely SMOKIN' version!
4. Hearts Of Stone - A truly heartfelt version. This songs was awkwardly sequenced as Southside thanks the audience and says goodnight, even though the CD continues on for another 11 songs!
5. Trapped Again - Nice energetic version. Fun.
6. Why Is Love Such A Sacrifice - Another great version. One of my favorite SSJ songs.
7. Restless Heart - This song did nothing for me.
8. Vertigo - Dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock! Sounds like he's saying "Ver-ti-joe" in the chorus! A nice version, but not significantly different than the studio version.
9. I Don't Want To Go Home - A nice version - faster paced than the studio version. Contains the classic line "Whatever happened to... your mother and I?"
10. The Fever - This version is on fire! Sultry and triumphant.
11. Sam Cook Medley - This was okay, but came off to me as just a quick run through tribute to Sam Cooke.
12. Bring It On Home - Didn't care for this one at all. Was too slow, with some dreadful background vocals. Your mileage may vary.
13. Having A Party - What would a SSJ show be without this one? I still prefer the late 70's version found on the "Having A Party" and "Live At The Bottom Line" CDs.
14. Back In The USA - This one rocks out! Interestingly, there a some (very brief) alternating dropouts on the left and right
channels around the 4:18 - 4:20 mark. I never noticed it before, but picked it up now as I was wearing headphones.
15. Having A Party, Roll Out The Barrel - The set closer. Did I miss something, or is "Roll Out The Barrel" NOT on this cd? I did not hear it during track 15.
Reach Up & Touch the Sky: Live [LIVE].......2004-06-20
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were/are a band that sounds as good as they did in the `70s; their music is infectious. The horn arrangements are great and really enhance the tunes. My introduction to SJ was this title as an LP (yep, long ago). This album rocks. What a joy to listen to it on CD. You will not go wrong to buy this title. It was a mistake to delete "Stagger Lee," a tune on the album, but deleted on the CD version. Warning!!! Listen to this in your car and you might end up with a speeding ticket! Enjoy.
Edited From the LP.......2003-02-17
As I see it, there are two ways of approaching this review. On the one hand, this CD is a great deal. Lots of great R&B by a great live band for an insanely low price. They tear through their own hits, as well as a great Sam Cooke medley (although I've always considered medleys a bit of a tease), followed by Cooke's "Bring It On Home" & "Having a Party" in their entirety, & finally Chuck Berry's "Back in the USA". On the other hand, as I looked at the set list, I thought I remembered "Stagger Lee" being on the original LP version. How they could edit out "Stagger Lee" (of all tunes), especially a 7+ minute version, is beyond me. As far as I'm concerned, this easily warrants taking a full point off. Bottom Line; If you like great live R&B, you can't go wrong with this. But it could've been so much better!

He is the voice of smooth jazz on Detroit morning radio and an underrated pioneer of the genre, who has been making records, featuring his flute, for 20 years. His comeback effort is a pleasant addition to his otherwise hard-to-find catalog. With an all-star cast and big-name producers, including smooth-jazz stars Jeff Lorber and Kirk Whalum, Zonjic doesn't take any musical chances here or fly beyond the smooth-jazz radar. Seven of the 10 tracks are familiar cover tunes, ranging from smooth-jazz classics by Bob James and Chuck Mangione to pop gems by the Beatles and Carole King. Zonjic's fellow Detroiter, Earl Klugh, spices up the early part of the disc, while the sterling production and the light flute style keeps the album moving the rest of the way. With the absence of new music from Dave Valentin, Nelson Rangell, and Sherry Winston, Zonjic could easily establish himself as the flute voice of smooth jazz with this album. --Mark Ruffin
Customer Reviews:
A matter of preference.......2004-09-17
Alexander Zonjic cannot be beaten when it comes to smooth jazz on the flute, where he is to the flute what Pete Fountain is to the clarinet. Mr. Zonjic used to play in the evenings at as restaurant near me, and we usually ate early, compared to when the music started. The result: on several occasion, we were treated to hearing Alexander Zonjic rehearse many different pieces, including those listed here. Good food and great music for no extra price! So, why not five stars? That is purely an issue of personal preference, as I am not a big fan of jazz vocals, and some of these pieces have vocal segments. I cannot fault the quality of the singing; I'd just prefer the instrumental music by itself. How about 4.8 stars?
Satiny Smooth Flute.......2002-07-24
Long time listener to Zonjic in the morning here in Motown, this CD was a natural.
Marvelous arrangements of pop tunes plus some jazz greats played by this smooth jazz flutist, accompanied by very jazz greats the likes of Klugh, etc.
Enjoy this more than the Tim Weisberg stuff, which at times went to far towards reverb and rock sound. This is just nice, smooth sounds with beat and class.
Super Smooth.........2001-10-31
Really great tunes.. Great musicians.. the smoothest vocals I heard in a long time.. Reach for your drink... Reach for your Date...and Reach for the Sky an UNBEATABLE COMBINATION!!!

sunrise and astronaut in general.......2005-12-05
many people review astronaught and make comments about the time the boys were away from one another, how bad the music was when they were apart, etc. that may be so, but as a true fan of the fab five, i have purchased AND LOVED each and every track of each and every album/cd/dvd/etc., they have ever put out. the only one i truly had trouble with was the album LIBERTY however, its not that hard on the ears. simon - the voice - was never lost in all these years of the bands turmoil - he stood for DURAN DURAN while the others were finding their way back. i never lost the faith that they would. and in sunrise and other tracks on astronaut it is very apparent that the other 3 have definitely come home. you hear rogers unique sounds, andys missed guitar, johns lamenting bass, as well as nicks keyboarding/synths. but it all gels together - no matter who is behind him - as long as simon is there. this has to be THE number 1 cd - astronaut does not have 1 bad song on it. i was in a hospital room awaiting a heart for a heart transplant when i was up that morning i first heard sunrise on good morning america. i kid you not, the nurses came running in and tried their best to keep me from being too excited. but it could not be done. THE BOYS ARE DEFINITELY BACK AND WERE MUCH MISSED.
5 months after my heart transplant, i was in the corestates spectrum in philadelphia pa absolutely enjoying my boys back on stage where they belong. if you dont get this cd, you will have missed the meaning of the last 25 years of duran duran and all they mean to us duranies.
Sunrise--very good! Know it all---FLAT! .......2005-03-02
I just bought the single for the Know It All song that is not on their Astronaut album. While Reach Up for the Sunrise is very good and sounds like it was recorded in an arena in front of thousands of fans, I didn't like Know it All. Know is just eerie sounding and more of an instrumental song, with one member singing over a vocoder. Sometimes, you hardly know what they are singing in the song. I can see why they left it off of the Astronaut album, where the 12 songs on there are very superior. So while you're dancing to Sunrise, skip the CD button on Know it all. It sounds flat.
Back Together and with an Out Of This World Album.......2004-11-15
Five British pop stars hailing from Birmingham, England and starting out at a local pub called the Rum Runner Club and playing catchy tunes like 'Planet Earth', 'Careless Memories', and 'Girls On Film'. You know who I am talking about. Duran Duran.
They were the pin-up boys in the 1980's and now they are dads. They have a new album out called 'Astronaut'. Very much a danceable album and has great rhythmic tunes such as 'Sunrise', 'Astronaut', 'Bedroom Toys', and 'What Happens Tomorrow'. They are just a few to mention as well as other great songs off the new album. 'Astronaut' has launched Duran Duran into high gear ever since they have reunited back in the year 2000.
After reuniting together again in 19 years, their world has become astronomical. They have received 'Lifetime Acheivement Award'.Duran Duran has been playing sold out shows, appearing on national TV at the Super Bowl in 2003. And now they have a new album. Congratulations.
Their success has been long overdue and with 'Astronaut', it's not far behind. Lead singer Simon LeBon and keyboardist Nick Rhodes, has teamed up with the Taylor boys. They are drummer Roger Taylor, bass and <a href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=11&k=acoustic%20guitar" onmouseover="window.status='acoustic guitar'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">acoustic guitar John Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor. None of the Taylors are related. Bu needless to say, Duran Duran is where they should be in life. They have this great connection with each other. And the last time they ever had a number 1 hit, was back in 1985 with 'A View to a Kill'. Which is also the last song Duran Duran ever did before they split.
Soon after that there was no more number 1 hits and no more Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor. Then in the next few years, John Taylor decided to do a solo career. Which by then, John has left Duran Duran as well. But one thing was realy clear to Simon and Nick, they wanted to have a number 1 hit again and to have the Taylor boys back.
So now they are back together again in full swing with their new appearances as being dads and putting out a great album. And they could not be any happier in life as of right now. Duran Duran sure has come a long way. But to put everything into perspective, they are still making music, making history and still making very woman in the world crazy over them all over again.
Duran Duran is back and better than ever!.......2004-10-13
AS a longtime Duran Duran fan, I have to admit that over the past 10 years or so I really lost interest in their music. Albums like Pop Trash and Medazzland never really appealed to me, and judging from the sales and reviews from critics, most everyone else in the world felt the same way. The lineup was a shadow of it's former self and it was truly reflected in their music.
Now that the whole band is back together, they have found their groove once again. "(Reach up for the)Sunrise" the first singel of their "Astronaut" LP is an uplifting, upbeat song that shows that these guys never lost it...it just took all of them getting back together to realize it. With Roger Taylor's "Girls on Flim" sounding drum line and Simon's suprisingly straightforward lyrics (remember, this is the guy who had lyrics like "Shake up the picture, the lizard mixture"), this song is sure to be a hit if the radio stations programmers get off their butts and relize that this is not just a one-off song from a nostalgic band, but a great song from a band that has managed to weather the ups and downs of the music industry for over 25 years! Give it a chance...Duran Duran will not let you down!
Awesome !!.......2004-10-08
No doubt that this single marked the Big Five come back. Yes, their back together again!! And its really really a great single ever!! It's like the old days coming back again.... back to the glorious era of Duran Duran. Its a must have single to all duranies all around the world!! Its a very Duran Duran's style which combined Nick's touch with all the Taylors' style along with the sexy voice of Simon!!

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

This was a remix of 2 songs from th mid-80's, and they were a both staple 12" items in any dance DJ's footlocker. The popularity of hot-mix was gaining a foothold in cities like New York and Chicago, and although D train never garnered the popularity they deserved in the US, they were respected by club DJs worldwide, as was Tony Lee. Both these artists were best known for these 2 songs.

RED HOT + COUNTRY, in addition to supporting AIDS research, will fund a special education project which will target rural communities throughout the nation.
"Teach Your Children" was nominated for Best Country Vocal Collaboration, and "Keep On The Sunny Side" was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
RED HOT + COUNTRY is the fourth album in the very successful RED HOT series of genre-specific recordings benefiting AIDS Awareness. This time it's country music's turn, and under the guidance of Kathy Mattea, numerous contemporary Nashville superstars chose a song or a style representing an influence on their own artistry. For the most part they chose songs of hope and healing.
From the opening "Teach Your Children" featuring Mattea, Suzy Bogguss, Alison Krauss, and Crosby Stills & Nash to the closing Carter Family tune, "Keep On The Sunnyside," featuring bluegrass greats Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, the entire album offers a ray of light in these fearful times.
