5 out of 5 stars Keep your eye on this guy!.......2007-07-12

First the bad news: I wonder if Jay still needs to work on forging his own "signature" sound. He sounds like Chuck Loeb on one track, Jeff Golub on another, Norman Brown on the next, Chieli Minucci after that, and Zachary Breaux on yet another.

The Good News: If you put together an album with one or two killer new tracks from each of those guys, this is what it might sound like. I know it's hard to believe, but Stay a While is *that* good.

Stay a While (a title which is just bad grammar and not clever) is filled to the brim with that golden, dripping smooth jazz guitar that is so sweet, you swear it gives you a high. There isn't a single track on here you'll want to skip. And when, from practically out of nowhere, Jeffrey Osborne shows up on track 8, it's a welcome surprise.

After an outing like this, Jay will almost certainly join the pantheon of Smooth Jazz Guitar greats. And once he does settle on a signature tone (likely the next time around) that he can own, watch out!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have CD!!!!!.......2007-07-03

This CD ranks as one of my all time favorites. Jay is definitely one of the best guitarist on the airwaves today. Each track on this CD stands out as a great track to me. We all love to put a CD in, and just let it go. This is one of those CDs. The productions are simply fabulous!!! This is a must have CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars This Should Be Your Summer Cruise CD.......2007-06-11

This is the CD that you'll want to pop into your car for that summer trip. Hopefully, it will turn that frown after you fill up your gas tank into a grin. It is an extremely uplifting and energetic album. You can tell that despite wearing the mantle of both musician and writer, that Mr. Soto is just having fun on this CD cutting loose. I think that allowing jazz icons like Jeff Lorber and Paul Brown and company to do the producing really allowed him to concentrate on the other fun stuff ... like playing. The album is great from start to finish. In addition, the mastering and sound quality are excellent. In this age of numerous great contemporary jazz guitarists, I think Mr. Soto stands out because being also an accomplished pianist, his tunes don't sound like a lot of the other guitarists. In any event, some of the tracks that stand out on this CD are "Stay A While," (the ultimate cruising song), "Love Has Found A Way," (a beautifully written vocal tune that Jeffery Osborne just takes the ball and runs with), "Slammin'," (an extremely fun and funky tune, which looks as though will be the hit single off of the CD), and "Daydreamin,'" which takes me back to my youth in the 1970s, of listening to those classic CTI recordings. Also, being a lover of the saxophone, I have to send out my props to Michael Lington who contributes some beautiful playing on this record, just like he did on Mr. Soto's first CD, "A Long Time Coming." There's definitely something for everyone on this CD, and definitely no sophomore jinx for this jazz artist with this fun and funky release. Go out and pick it up today and start cruising down the highway!

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2007-05-30

This is unquestionably the big breakout album for Phoenix-based guitarist Jay Soto. This guy's got the goods... the jazz chops, the looks, the poise, the panache. Add to those elements the all-star support team (Jeff Lorber, Paul Brown, Michael Lington, Euge Groove, and Jeffrey Osborne) and you've got a killer sophomore release that's already showing its stuff as it moves quickly up the Smooth Jazz charts. If you like Jeff Golub, Paul Brown and Chris Standring then you're gonna love Jay Soto. His playing is superb, and STAY AWHILE has that magical quality about it that marks it as a hit effort. The songs... every one of them... are solid, led by the first radio single, "Slammin'," which is rocketing up the charts. Ten of the tunes are either written or co-written by Jay... there's one cover, Stevie Wonder's "Send One Your Love," which sparkles with Paul Brown's production and Michael Lington's alto sax work. Then there's a Paul Brown original, "Jaywalking," that cranks out some energetic funk with the help of Euge Groove; and we can't forget Jeffrey Osborne's classy, smooth vocal on "Love Has Found a Way." So, let's review: Great songs, world-class production, as you would expect from people like Lorber, Brown, and Darren Rahn (Wayman Tisdale, Jonathan Butler), and a magical vibe. The result: An album that stacks up beautifully against all guitar albums on today's Smooth Jazz charts. Jay Soto's STAY AWHILE is a no-brainer for my "highly recommended" list! ~SANDY SHORE

Bridging the channel between smooth jazz and hip-bop/acid jazz are Down to the Bone, a band that mixes live horns with grooves and beats and comes up with something classy smooth. Down to the Bone are more about the dance floor than the listening room, but they do spice the mix with some up-front horn charts and often use interesting instrumentation (is that an oboe?) to keep things moving. --S. Duda

Best price!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best listening experiences ever.......2007-04-12

Rarely do I listen to an album that I love beginning to end, but this one succeeds easily. I never get tired of hearing it, and like another reviewer commented, it just makes me happy all the way through -- it's a great pick-me-up after a long, hard day. I can't help but MOVE to the complex layers of rhythm and music, all interwoven with amazing balance, and even though I've listened countless times now, it seems I'm always picking up some new element in the sound. Some groups play music, others MAKE music. DTTB is definitely in that latter category.

1 out of 5 stars Can someone explain.......2005-10-25

why this album cost nearly $60? I was looking to buy it, but not for that kinda price. My "lone star" rating does not reflect my review but it's cost.

2 out of 5 stars NOT THAT INSPIRED.......2004-08-31

When I heard "brooklyn heights" I hoped that this band had other songs in the same vein, but they do not.
The rest of the cd sounds like uninspired acid-jazz, with not enough musical chances taken.

"Brooklyn Heights" is such a great track, that it makes the rest of the cd seem inferior!

It seems like these dudes have the right idea of musicality, but they don't seem to take it as far as they should.
It sounds like they don't want to scare off their "smooth jazz" audience, so they keep the songs flat, and boring.

Had potential, but falls flat.

This is still better than average. After all, there are not many good Nu Jazz CDs today. Jazzelicious did a good job on Carmen McRae. It does not sound like old classical vocal jazz. Some people may think that it is not based on Carmen McRae, who is famous for straight vocal jazz.

4 out of 5 stars Club Music, No Nu Jazz.......2007-06-27

Many DJs were trying to do some magic to old classical famous jazz, such as Sarah Vaughan or Nina Simon. Unfortunately, I could not find good ones until I bought this CD. Jazzelicious did a great job on Sarah Vaughan's Lover Man. It could even be appreciated by people who usually do not like classical jazz. It is nothing but Club Music with a little bit of Jazz. He did the same to Blue Bossa by McCoy Tyner!

I first became familiar with Tony Guerrero a few years back when I heard Mysterie from this CD on Music Choice. I picked up this CD in a used CD store and it turned out to be a great find. There are a number of smooth and relaxing songs featuring flugelhorn on the CD including "Mysterie", "Uptown", "Beautiful", "All Night Long" and "First Love". This cd is usually only available used now and rather inexpensively I might add. Don't let the low price scare you as to its quality, it's very good.

4 out of 5 stars Jazz fusion that you can listen or dance too........1998-11-22

This is one of those undiscovered gems that you come across once in a while that easily falls into your most played category. This is jazz fusion that is eminently danceable ( take the opening track "free fall" forinstance); but has many other elements like the soothing, sensuous vocals of Judy LaRose on tracks like "heaven in your eyes". The album is good mix of foot tapping up tempo grooves offset by beautiful midtempo melodies. My one rejoinder to the producers of this album(CD) is that I am getting really upset at the lack of any notes with CD,s. Who infact plays that kicking sax on most of the tracks?????

    4 out of 5 stars wasn't NU Groove's catalog a bit larger than this!?.......2002-02-10

Little Louie does it again...blah blah blah...
Although it's an above average compilation, it fails to really capture the innovative, uncompromising essence that was once NU Groove (and Burrell), as other, even better, tracks were left out!
Louie has played many NU Groove tracks before, it's not like he's unfamiliar w/ the label, but still...
Also, at least 5 additional tracks could've been "mixed" into this compilation, if they really wanted to mix it.
This wouldn't appeal to most of the younger cats, but I would strongly advise them to research NU Groove on 12" vinyl format!

2 out of 5 stars A Bumpy, mediocre ride at best........2001-05-15

Being a fan of Little Louie Vega I expected much much more from this cd. I was very disappointed and I caution anyone looking for the greatness of some other Louie Vega house music works to look elsewhere. This dance set reminds me of the music dj's play at clubs before midnight, you know, before the party actually starts. There is no continuity to the set at all and it sounds like Louie was given ten records to mix as best he could. I hate to think there were other records to choose from to make this set. The mixing is good but the music selection is less than average. The only tracks worth mentioning on this cd are "I'm Glad You Came To Me", "I Desire You", and "Somebody Skat'n." The rest is average or just plain bad. Tracks 2 & 10 could have very easily been left off this compilation. This cd would have been a little better if the music weren't mixed, thus the listener would at least know the various tracks weren't necessarily supposed to go together. I can't even imagine trying to dance to this entire cd non-stop. Without the three tracks I really liked, the rating would've been my first ever 1 star. What we have here is a dj's nightmare and just because a skilled dj can mix anything, doesn't mean it's to be done!

5 out of 5 stars Get Ya Hands on This One.......2000-11-05

Here's a combination of mixing and production I was delightfully surprised to see; with Louie Vega and Rheji Burrell collaborating to bring a great sampling of the Burrell's work from the legendary label, Nugroove. Rheji and Ronald's contribution to the classic New York house sound is extraordinary. This CD contains some tracks not included in previous NuGroove compilations, such as, "I'm Glad You Come To Me", "Somebody Skat'n", and "I Desire U". Even this CD does not begin to cover the amount of excellent tracks by the Burrell's NuGroove years, but any chance to find more of their classic material released on CD is a treasure.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic early 90's Garage.......2000-06-18

I have this cd, and it is fantastic. Songs I listened to on the radio and in the clubs in NYC. When I purchased it I only recalled knowing some of the songs by name. Once I listened I realized I knew almost all of the songs. Excellent buy for those true house (garage) fans.

Guaranteed hard to classify into just one category Cuban pianist and composer Romero's latest cd Cuban Jazz Funk breaks through with percussive piano, striking sax, tight drums and funky bass topped off with raw percussion.

Romero's compositions are all original. He pushes himself to stay unique with a style all his own. So if you are ready for a ride, a "rollercoaster ride" then fasten your seat belt for a journey that can only be described as urgent and in the moment.

"Descarga Palmieri" pays homage to Charlie and Eddie Palmieri. "Sunrise" gives you a melodic visit to the islands. "Zorro Rollercoaster" takes you into tame and wild places. "Citizen of the World" is jungle. "In the Moment" is jazz at its best. "Sieston" stretches and stretches. "Meditation" totally surprises with its simplicity.

Challenge yourself and your ears into Cuban Jazz Funks open spaces and tight corners. Like a fine painting that reveals something new each time you look at it, the same is true with every listen of Cuban Jazz Funk. It's all good. It's all CUBAN JAZZ FUNK.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good latin jazz.......2006-07-06

I bought this CD based on the reviews on the Amazon website. While it is good and I would play it at parties, it certainly isn't one that I would automatically grab for when I have a yearning for great latin jazz. It is; however, fun and sometimes provocative.

5 out of 5 stars Cuban Jazz Funk Delivers Just What it Says.......2001-09-02

This cd ignites fire and can go up against any new lions. Romero is one hot percussive pianist and the rest of the band adds to the fire. It's not for the tame, no Buena Vista here, but if you want a walk on the wild side this is where jazz today should be.
Descarga Palmieri breaks open the cd and starts this most enjoyable voyage.
