Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03
I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!
just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09
loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.
Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06
Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.
Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04
I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.
Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05
Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

Enjoyable.......2005-08-23
If you like TV/movie soundtracks, and Andromeda, you should like this. Good Andromeda music, also contains the two different opening themes. (Remember, it is a TV soundtrack so it contains synthesized music.) I enjoy listening to it, and can have it playing in the background at work too without it being bothersome.
A Great Soundtrack.......2005-02-01
The soundtrack to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is one of the best sci-fi soundtracks to come out in quite a while. I found the music exciting, interesting and intriguing, and on several tracks simply exhilarating; composer Matthew McCauley really does take you on a musical roller-coaster, from the stately High Guard Theme to Dylan's theme to Trance's and Beka's themes to the Nietzschean Attack theme. McCauley musically explores each character, underscoring and enhancing their unique personality. The album has kind of a New Age-ish sound to it on several tracks which gives it a mysterious ethereal quality. A great score for a great series. Composer Matthew McCauley certainly knows his stuff. This is just great music whether or not you're a fan of the show!
love it.......2003-08-08
Great presentation of soundtrack. Interesting instrumentals for even those who are not familiar with the show. I listen to it practically all the time!
A great television score!.......2002-03-27
First off, this is a television soundtrack, not a movie soundtrack-- many of the "instruments" are synthesized. Okay, that aside, this is a great album! It's been a long time since I've heard so many different character themes on a tv soundtrack. From the Heroic "Dylan Hunt", to the brooding "Rev Bem and Magog" music, to the outright ominious "Neitzscheans" themes, this album is a winner. It's nice that the producers also included Alex Lifeson's "March of the High Guard" theme from season 1, which is regrettably no longer used on the show. The music on this album takes you on a emotional roller coaster-- from mysterious, to brooding, to heroic and back again. High recommended for fans of both scores and the television series alike!

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11
Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

Customer Reviews:
Decent, but not the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK.......2004-07-05
This is not the exact music heard in the movie. It is a remake. Someone should issue the ACTUAL music soundtrack heard in the movie on cd. They Could Take The Original 6-Track 70mm Optical Soundtracks, and use a mixing board to get rid of the dialogue and sound effects, and edit the selections to how they are heard on this CD, but they would be the originals heard in the movie (maybe throw in some extra music from the movie that has never appeared on any of the soundtrack albums in the past 41 years, hint, hint :). Until then, I guess this is as good as it gets.
Loved the movie, loved the CD.......2001-08-09
If you loved the movie, you'll love this CD. I have seen the movie dozens of times and it's just wonderful to have the music available when I drive around, though somewhat less madly than these characters. The CD has all the essential musical elements from the movie and immediately calls to mind those parts of the film that are assocaited with it. Thanks, Mr. Gold, for having the foresight to produce it. The information that comes with the CD is great, too.
Original music, but not original "Soundtrack"... technically.......2000-12-23
Though touted as an original "soundtrack" recording, this is in actuality an original "score" recording. The soundtrack was recorded with the 106 member Los Angeles Philharmonic. This disc is a re-recording with a 65 piece orchestra, helmed by composer Ernest Gold. However, all of the well remembered themes are here, and some bits of memorable dialogue. Also included are full versions of "Thirty One Flavors," and "You Satisfy My Soul" - the songs heard during the scenes with Dick Shawn and Barrie Chase. All in all, a fun listening experience of music which was as much a character in the film as any of the actors.
Classic Ernest Gold.......2000-03-27
This soundtrack is one of my favorite Ernest Gold works. I waited years for this to be available on CD. The score was touted as one of the stars of the film, and those who have seen this wonderfully humorous epic, like myself, would certainly agree. Even though no single cut from this soundtrack was distinctive enough on its own to ever make its mark in radio play, listeners will vividly recall scenes from the movie as they browse the tracks. I particularly enjoy the Main Title, Music at the Big W, and Adios Santa Rosita, among others. This soundtrack is reasonably listenable on its own. It includes a variety of musical styles wrapped together with a recurring theme that identifies itself as part of this classic film that is a who's who of comedy actors of it's time. If you haven't seen the 1963 film, get that as well - an all time comedy classic.
Any of Ernest Gold's soundtracks are worth having if you like his music. Judgement at Nuremburg is a reprint of the original soundtrack and is now available. Other Ernest Gold soundtracks that I have heard include Exodus (with its famous theme music that did make radio play in its time), Ship of Fools, and On the Beach, an early cold war doomsday classic. By the way, with the exception of Exodus, the other films mentioned here were all directed by Stanley Kramer. Another collaboration between these two men was The Secret of Santa Vittoria, a WWII comedy/drama. Get your Ernest Gold now before it goes out of print.

Magnificent jams!.......2000-01-29
Delightful! A brilliant lineup of musical greats and not-so-greats weigh in with golden jams from forgotten films. If you dig the Now sound or fancy yourself to be some kind of hipster, you need this. The import price is steep, but if you like swinging Latin-tinged jazz and overheated sixties pop, this is a great compilation.
