Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The foursome come roaring out of the blocks with their latest collection. The album's first single, "Beautiful Day," raced to the No. 1 slot on the U.K. singles charts and received a similar rapturous reception stateside. From its shimmering preamble to its sweeping, infectious chorus, it perfectly stakes out the middle ground between the anthemic U2 of the '80s and the more grounded group of the '90s. With Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno sharing production chores again after having taken a break with Pop, the U2 team enters the new millennium with their lineup--and mission--intact. --Steven Stolder
Amazon.com essential recording
If U2 hadn't used the title already, "A Sort of Homecoming" might have suited this, their 10th studio album. All That You Can't Leave Behind sounds, at various points, like any or all of U2's previous albums, as if the band is sending postcards back from a protracted ramble through previously conquered territories. The euphoric opening track, "Beautiful Day," reintroduces Edge's signature delay-laden guitar, which has been pretty much absent since The Unforgettable Fire. Elsewhere, the gospel stylings of Rattle and Hum resurface on "Stuck in a Moment," and the deranged, Prodigy-influenced dance textures that characterized 1997's Pop crop up on "Elevation." None of which suggest that this commendably restless bunch is running out of ideas. Having spent the '90s making three of the most bizarre and adventurous albums ever delivered by a stadium-rock band (the consecutive masterpieces Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop), it's as if they're now trying to figure out what is the one particular thing they've always done best. Based on the evidence presented here, their forte remains a facility for making the epic statement alongside Bono's increasing lyrical intimacy: "Walk On" and "Peace on Earth" are two of the best things he's ever written or sung. All That You Can't Leave Behind confirms that U2's laurels are still making them itch. --Andrew Mueller

U2 For You If For U2 You Are True.......2007-03-27
This won't be one of my typical long reviews. I will simply say that I started buying U2 when they 1st came out with what I call protest songs. I haven't stopped. To me they are the band of the 80s and 90s and even into the 21st. century. I own every cd that U2 ever brought out. I will always buy U2 as long as it consists of Bono, The Edge, Clayton and Mullins Jr. I don't even have to think about it....their music is my music and I will buy them.....this cd is a U2 cd and reason enough for me to buy it...if you love U2 you will buy them all or you are not a true U2 fan...the preceeding was a Joliet Jayke the Bluze Brother Editorial opinion and only reflects my opinion..nuff said.
I just love this cd.......2007-03-25
This cd is one of the top three in U2 catalogue, the other two would be "The joshua Tree" and "Atchung Baby". I can listen to this one many times each week and never get tired of. This is what we can call "A desert Island cd" if you see what I mean. Eleven great songs, the ballads are really good, "Stuck in a moment you can't get out of", "Kite", "In a little while" are incredible, lot of emotion and the voice of Bono is awesome. This band gets better with age.
All That You Can't Leave Behind unheard.......2007-03-09
This is one of the best album of U2. As an album it is number 3 after Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby. It is one of those records you better not stop at all. Not only for fans.
THEIR BEST; EVEN BETTER THAN JOSHUA TREE!.......2006-12-25
Six years now since the release, and this magnificent grouping of songs is still fresh! Beyond the obvious hits "Beautiful Day", "Elevation", and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of", take a new listen to "In a Little While", "When I Look at the World", and "Grace." Bono's voice never better on these cuts. I never tire of this album!!
Released before 9/11....Really?.......2006-12-06
I have to say that one of the most remarkable things about this CD has nothing to do with its engineering and songwriting. What has always struck me about this CD is that it became such a tribute album to the events of September 11th, but it was released almost a year earlier. The lyrics are uplifting and eerily fore-shadowing all at once. For example:
-As some reviewers have noted "Walk On" has become an anthem to rising above the ashes and carrying on in the face adversity.
-"Beautiful Day" is a tribute to wonderful day that is laid out before us.
-"New York" is an ode to a city that is collectively stronger than anyone thought possible.
-Lastly, "Peace on Earth" has got to be one of the most fore-telling songs in the past twenty years. "They're reading names out over the radio/All the folks the rest of us won't get to know/Sean and Julia, Gaerth, Ann and Breda/Their lives are bigger than any big idea." It's scary, but I think U2 kind of knew where we, as a society were headed.
It's been a point of discussion between my wife and I, becuase she insists that there is no way these songs could have been written before 9/11. But they were and it makes it all the more remarkable.

good stuff.......2007-07-16
A very good album with many memorable songs. I know I will be able to throw this cd in my player 10 years later and still enjoy it.
Incredible, a must have.......2007-07-03
A incredible CD. Its really refreshing to hear a new band actually produce something worthwhile to buy. "Leave a Whisper" demonstrates Shinedown's ability to mix up song styles and not deviate from a good niche. The bonus tracks are worth while to listen to as well.
My only complaint about this CD is that the "Enhanced CD" style often skips on my stereo in my Room. I'd wish they would have just delivered a straightforward, Audio only cd. This can be easily fixed though by just ripping the songs to your computer and then making a audio cd of just the songs.
That said, I highly recommend this CD and this band. Theres very few "filler" songs on here, and if you are half as happy as I am with this CD, then you'll be glad you forked over the 15 bucks or so for this album!
Brilliant album.......2007-05-12
This is how music is ment to be. From the day I first heard about Shinedown I became a big fan of them. Nobody knows them in Holland, so it took me a little while to get to know them.
This album has many goods songs. Fly from the inside, Burning Bright, In memory and 45 are my favorites.
One of the better hard rock bands out there........2007-05-09
These guys are one of the newer bands that are carrying the modern hard rock scene on their backs right now. They are hit-makers and have a raw, hard-edged style with soaring vocals. Check out the hits "Fly From the Inside" and ".45", but the whole cd is pretty great.
THIS is music at it's finest. .......2007-04-24
Firstly, I'll start by mentioning the fact that I have not gone a day without listening to at least one of the tracks from this album - in three years. Yes, it's really that good.
Shinedown is not your average mainstream rock band. They are mature. They know music. People here have attempted to describe this album, and usually unsuccessfully. Therefore, I'm not going to try to do so, because I just can't define what makes it so GOOD.
Here's the overview:
Fly From the Inside - What a way to kick things off! This is the most upbeat and fast-paced song on the album. The lyrics are uplifting and inspiring. My third favorite song on the album. 10/10
Left Out - I never really listened to this song as much as some of the other tracks. It is very meaty, with a lot of solid guitar and bass backing it up. The lyrics are so-so. 8/10
Lost In the Crowd - I love this song. It's a slower track, yet it heats up during the chorus. The style reminds me of Alic In Chains somewhat. It's a very dynamic song, great tune and easy to listen to. Includes a small guitar solo. 9/10
No More Love - Great, rough song. Lot's of blazing guitar intertwining with loud and in-your-face vocals. The chorus can start to get somewhat repetetive, but not nearly so as to ruin the song. 8/10
Better Version - For some reason this song appealed to me most when I first listened to the Album. In reality, it's an okay song, but nothing smashing. The lyrics are very clean and to-the-point. Can also become slightly repetetive, but a very good listen overall. 8/10
Burning Bright - THE song of the album. A slower song, but written and performed beautifully. Extremely melodic, a song that you can really get into. The lyrics are amazing, and the song itself is very focussed and directed. 10/10
In Memory - This song is on par with Better Version. It's a good song, but not amazing. (All of the tracks on this album are excellent, so keep in mind that I am being very picky with my ratings.) Very solid song, with a great bridge. 8/10
All I Ever Wanted - This is an awesome song to just listen to, very catchy. Not a whole lot to say about it, other than mentioning that it's, like every other song on the album; really solid, with good lyrics. 9/10
Stranger Inside - I rank this song and "Crying Out" in the same exact category. Both are amazing songs, both have well-written lyrics, both are well-performed. Yet another solid track.(Bet at this point the review is starting to sound robotic, eh?) 9/10
Lascerated: To break the cycle, this was my least favorite song on Leave a Whisper. In it's own light, I have a feeling I would have liked it more, had it not been in such great company. Guess the rest of the album spoils you. It's a deviation from the solidity of the rest of the CD, you can tell they were going for a different style. 7/10.
Crying Out - See Stranger Inside above. 9/10
.45 - (Also known as "Colt .45".) This is My second favorite song the album. The lyrics, the simple guitar, and the beautiful vocals, all really merge to make this a memorable one. 10/10
Bottom line: Best Album I own. If you like a mix of southern, classic, and modern rock, you will love Leave A Whisper.

This album's title cut finds the veteran folk-blues troubadour, now in his early 60s, pondering the possibility of living to be 100, thus setting the thematic tone for an uncommonly reflective, meditative set. The ragtime Zen of "Open Up," the philosophical "Seems So Real," and the rock-bottom despair in his cover of Peter Case's "Cold Trail Blues" all suggest that the virtuosic fingerpicker and evocatively smoky vocalist has reached a point in his life where he's pondering the biggest issues of mortality, a perspective that informs the complex relationship in "Father's Day." Not all of the material is that introspective, as the uptempo, electric rock of "Diplomacy" is as sardonic as Randy Newman, while "Origin of the Species" encapsulates Adam and Eve, Charles Darwin, and intelligent design. Smither also pays homage to two seminal influences, transforming Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" into an acoustic, accordion-laced waltz and reviving Lightnin' Hopkins's version of the traditional "Blues in the Bottle." Ollabelle provide harmonies on two cuts, with mandolinist Tim O' Brien also offering instrumental and vocal support. --Don McLeese

Lovely as Chris Smither always is..........2007-06-08
We were so pleased to get Chris' latest and as we had hoped the cd is Terrific. He's a great guitarist and somehow his lyrics tells stories that allow us in to know more about him...a great story teller. This is our 7th Chris Smither cd...he's incredible.
Smither is the best.......2007-05-15
Chris Smither is the kind of singer/songwriter/guitar picker that you want to go out and see whenever he comes to town. His every song sounds like music, and his lyrics give you cause to think.
another piece by a largely unrecognized master musician,songwriter........2007-03-31
i have been a fan of chris smither`s for about 35 years since first hearing cuts on the now long gone radio station WHFS,102.3 in bethesda,md. (D.C. and vicinity listeners from long ago should recall the station affectionately, also.) smither`s guitar playing is a unique and distinctive blend of folk, blues, and country that can only be described as superlative. his songwriting and way with words are unmatched, and comparable to Dylan, in my opinion. my favorite albums are "don`t it drag on","up on the lowdown", and now this most recent offering to those who can appreciate his talents,"leave the light on".
Leave the light on.......2007-02-24
I couldn't think of a better title for my review, listen to the the song and I think you will agree. Chris Smither gets better with every cd that he makes. He has a sound of his own and sees and hears life through a very unique perspective. There is not a cut on this cd that I don't like. Try it you want be disapointed.
Awesome.......2007-01-13
Chris Smither is a guitarists' guitarist. Even when his discs include orchestration they are incredible. If you've been to a solo concert, you're better off buying his two solo "live" discs in a small studio, because it's what you've heard, but if you like all Chris does, you won't be disappointed with this one.

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Interview with Renee Fleming
Renee Fleming speaks about recent projects, including her memoir The Inner Voice and her recent Handel CD, in our interview.
Customer Reviews:
Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13
The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!
The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.
So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).
Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06
Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.
Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10
I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.
I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.
To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!
Brava Renee.......2007-04-09
This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.
Art is always new. .......2007-03-10
Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.
I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

wonderful!.......2007-05-13
Eydie Gorme is the original queen of the "torch song." Forget Barbara Streisand (who is also great)--this is the real thing!
Don't Go to Strangers/Softly as I Leave You.......2007-04-26
The performance of Ms. Gorme in just one of the songs ( I want to be around ) is worth the 5 stars for the CD. The orchestration and sound is spectacular!
The Greatest Torch Singer!.......2007-04-11
My long playing record of Don't go To Strangers got lost and all I had was a sorry tape that I had tried to record. I pestered everyone about putting the tape on a CD but no one obliged. How thrilled do you think I was when I found her album among your CD's!? I am so thrilled with my CD of Eydie and I even got a bonus of Softly AS I Leave You on the same CD. I searched high and low to find this and now I have it. It is a true treasure to hear Eydie belt out all those great songs. Thanks, Amazon!

My Father bought the "SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU" & "GREATEST HITS" albums on vinyl a long time ago back in the 60's and it somehow managed to survive in good shape. Later, I myself bought the "DON'T GO TO STRANGERS" album from a used vinyl store and was fairly happy with how these albums sounded on my Linn Turntable. WOW! When I heard these GL Music remasters on my Linn CD12, I could not believe the difference! (And this from a guy who usually finds the vinyl version sounds better.) An absolute must have, for not only Eydie Gorme fans, but ESPECIALLY all the people who think "WHAT'S NEW" is an album by Linda Ronstadt. The smooth soothing relaxing sound of these Eydie Gorme versions will make you forget about ever listening to the Linda Ronstadt versions again. Both of these albums are again one of MY ALL TIME FAVORITES in my collection.

Slightly less primitive than the Ramones' debut, Leave Home is somehow more melodic, poppier, and heavier than its predecessor. "Glad to See You Go" name-drops "the passion" of Charles Manson, while the terrific "Commando" ("First rule is the laws of Germany / Second rule is be nice to mommy") brings to mind a funnier MC5. But "Oh, Oh, I Love Her So" is pure classic pop--metallic bubblegum and their first foray into the Beach Boys-inspired harmonies that would be used to greater effect on Rocket to Russia. The "bruddahs" even do a speeded-up version of "California Sun" to drive the point home. "Pinhead" gave birth to the "Gabba! Gabba! Hey!" rallying cry. This splendid remastered reissue includes the original artwork, superior sound, and excellent liner notes by heavy-metal Ph.D. Dr. Donna Gaines. Also included is the band's August 1976 L.A. debut show at the Roxy Theater. Leave Home is the album that clued in a lot of people that this band was more than a novelty. --Bill Holdship

RAMONES AT THEIR BEST.......2006-12-01
This is the best album by the Ramones. Followed by Road to Ruin, Rocket to Russia, and then "Ramones". That's just my opinion."Swallow my Pride" is one of their greatest songs. Maybe it's just my ear. "Winter is here and it's going on two years" tells how Joey was so frustrated without success. Yah, I read their book. Anyway, get this album and say goodbye to the Beatles.
5th Rule is: This 1-2 punch will Knock You Out........2006-08-26
As years pass, it will only become more apparent that the Ramones produced some of our most beloved rock songs. Few lyrics and fewer chords somehow found a way to establish so much.
The 2nd in the great trio of Ramones titles from 1976-77, 'Leave Home' has been combined with a memorable 1976 west-coast gig. The 1-2 punch will simply knock you out.
*Glad to See You Go*, *Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment*, *Suzy Is a Headbanger*, *Pinhead* and *Commando* will all have you chanting and dancing along. *Oh Oh I Love Her So* succeeds where others have not dared to tread - and yes, some of us do remember similar moments in our young, Queens, New York lives.
After getting in the mood, what better way to wrap up this experience but with a thunderous 16-track live performance where we can hear a virtual greatest hits of their early material. I was floored by the [musical & historical] weight of this disc, and I have little doubt that you will as well.
Let's get it started ... 1-2-3-4 !!!
The Bonus Material Alone!.......2006-07-15
This is the greatest reissue of a CD in music history. Not only was it a great Ramones album, but Rhino Records added practically an entire concert. 16 live tracks of some of the greatest Ramones songs ever. So you can listen to the great tracks on the original recording like "Commando" and "California Sun," and then hear "Judy is a Punk" and "Blitzkrieg Bop" live. Incredible! All Ramones fans should have this CD.
Could they possibly improve over their debut?.......2006-01-30
The punk landscape is littered with bands who were capable of blowing one load and one load only. The Sex Pistols, The New York Dolls, Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers come to mind quickly and I'm sure that if I give that notion any more thought I'll be able to double that number up in no time flat.
While these bands were busy dissapering from the scene, The Ramones were busy crafting their second masterpiece, one that wouldn't even crack the Billboard 100 in the U.S. but would prove to be part of rock's glorious pantheon.
This CD contains what is perhaps the single best romantic song ever written about American teenagers living in the city - "Oh Oh I Love Her So" and a nod to The Beatles "You're Gonna Kill That Girl". And that's only two great songs out of 15.
This particular reissue sound luscious and I'm especially thankful for the number of live cuts included. Rhino does it right again.
Their best album and their best reissue.......2005-10-08
This is THE album to have by the Ramones. No, it doesn't have either of their biggest hits (Blitzkreig Bop - although there is a great live version on this CD - and I Wanna Be Sedated), but what Leave Home does have is the best all around collection of catchy, punchy, funny, heartfelt rockers that the Ramones ever released. And unlike their debut, this album has excellent production values - double tracked guitars and a bunch of well placed tamborine hits make such a difference!
There are many favorites on this one ... for example: Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment, I Remember You (recently played live in tribute by U2), What's Your Game, and my favorite Ramones song, Swallow My Pride. For completeness and historical accuracy, it also features the once-controversial (but also somewhat tepid) track, Carbona Not Glue.
What sets this CD apart from 99.999999% of all reissues out there is the inclusion of a FULL FREAKIN' LIVE SET FROM L.A.1976!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!! Added to a first rate sophomore LP from the boys, we lucky CD-agers get to hear a phenomenal live recording of their show at the ROXY, 8/12/76. I was seven years old, and no, I was not there. In any case, this is top notch live rockin' from the masters in their early days.
This album would make an ideal stocking stuffer.

Not quite what I thought - 2 1/2 stars.......2007-02-09
I investigated Ms. Hart after hearing her on "American Made World Played
Les Paul & Friends" where she had a cut with Neal Schon titled "I Wanna Know You". After hearing her on this cut - I had to dig deeper. Her voice is amazing. This album, however, is very disappointing. She should be singing "bluesy" material with her vocal talents. The material on this album is just too average. I will say the last half of the album is better than the 1st half. Maybe I just choose the wrong album??
Karen T.......2007-01-07
Raw emotion pervades all of Beth's music. If Janis Joplin could hear Beth Hart perform, she would say, "Wow, man!" I just saw her in concert again tonight and can't wait for her new CD to come out. Ballads or kick a#& rock - she does it all and well. Personally, I like this CD better than the others but what I heard in concert tonight is possibly even better!
Just discovered her.......2006-11-19
I had never heard of Beth Hart until last night. A friend of my boyfriend told him how good she was, that she sounded a lot like Janis.
She was playing at The Knitting Factory on Hollywood Blvd last night, so we decideed to see her. The place was sold out but some how he talked our way in. She was singing some mellow song that was really good but I thought his friend was NUTS!, this chick didn't sound a thing like Janis at all. Then she sang Monkey Back....Well I'll be damned! She did sound like Janis! I liked her so much last night I bought this CD.
As much as I like this CD, she's 100 times better live! If you ever have the opportunity to see her, don't miss it!
Incredible album........2006-09-29
This is an amazing album. I've had it for over a year and the more I listen to it the more I love it. There is nothing superficial about it. There are layers and layers of meaning and emotion here, as well as brutal honesty.
Beth is the best rock/blues singer ever and she is a great songwriter. Every album she does is better than the last.
There is so much emotion in this cd that no matter how many times I hear it I find my eyes watering when I least expect it.
This is the type of album that unfortunately only comes out of a painful experience or a series of painful experiences (abusive relationships, abandonment, self abuse, alcohol, drugs). Out of those experiences something astonishing is created. Despite the pain and heartbreak and shame Beth chooses hope and faith. This is a very cohesive album with a central theme of someone struggling yet determined to break the unhealthy cycles and start over again. She takes the lessons learned and moves forward to a better, healthier place and embraces life and all it has to offer.
DO YOURSEF A FAVOUR & BUY THIS CD.......2006-03-05
This is one of my favourite cds,& the one that's more often playing-so I guess it is the favourite...Anyway,how come you Americans go nuts over Britney or Gwen and not Beth!!!She is absolutely fantastic and deserves to be better recognised in US.'Leave the Light On' is a cd to listen to any mood and up loud. Many a time I've listened to the cd & longed for a voice as achingly beautiful as Beth's.The strength of her self as well as voice is in the songs she sings. Many of them are her facing up to her demons.'Leave The Light On' is as good as 'Sky Full Of Clover' is as good as'Broken& Ugly'...DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR & BUY THIS CD!I can't wait for her next cd!If I could I'd rate it 10 out 5.

The tale of a mother who poses as her son's estranged father in letters, yet eventually has to enlist a stranger to play the role, director Shona Auerbach's intimate indie became a film festival perennial. Given the movie's tearjerker tendencies, its musical score becomes an even more crucial component of its deft, if relatively non-manipulative dramaturgy. Young composer Alex Heffes more than rises to the occasion, providing a delicate score fueled by spare, elegant piano and emotionally-longing string arrangements. Heffes work here mines the same intimately scaled, soulfully resonant vein as Rachel Portman's Oscar-nominated music for Lasse Hallstrom's Ciderhouse Rules and Chocolat, a skillful musical tack that's openly emotional, yet seldom cloying. The contributions of modern rockers Clarksville (the buoyant "Everyone Will Have Their Day" and more intimate ballad "Reprise") and singer-songwriters Obi and Jesse Harris organically mesh with Heffes' score in a way that's all to rare in an era where pop songs often contribute little more than marketing shuck to film projects. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Uhhh... It's Ok..........2007-05-01
I really loved the movie and especially little Frankie. There where three songs that just stuck in my head for weeks, so I bought the CD... unfortunatly out of the three songs, only one was on the CD... I was alittle dissapointed but overall it is a good CD. I really like Jesse Harris. He is the best on the whole CD.
Key songs are missing.......2007-02-21
After watching "Dear Frankie" on cable several times, I decided to buy it and the soundtrack album. I did not read the detailed list of songs before buying. Although the soundtrack is good for what it is, I was disappointed that the song "Delicate" by Damien Rice was not included. Nor was the song about the "white horse" that was sung twice during the movie, once by Lizzie and once by the club singer. It would have been nice also to have the "Macarena" song which was in the movie.
Nice mix of score and soundtrack.......2007-02-07
This album is nice because it has all the score music along with all the other music played in the movie on one CD. The "Dear Frankie Main Title" is especially nice to have. I bought this CD for my sister for Christmas, but now the whole family wants to listen to it. I would recommend it for anyone that liked the movie!
Beautiful, sensitive, sad and hopeful. .......2007-01-21
I stumbled upon this quiet little movie and feel like I've discovered a wonderful jewel. I was immediately enamored by the soundtrack and worked hard to purchase it right away. The music along with a few dialogue excerpts communicate much of the emotion and power of the movie. There's one song that was, regrettably, not on the soundtrack but I recommend be added to the CD or your collection: Damien Rice, "Delicate" from the "O" album. The music communicates such a sense of loss and longing while maintaining just enough of a glimmer of hope that you end up feeling alright.
It's a wonderful soundtrack and definitely worth the purchase.
Dear Frankie- CD.......2007-01-09
I liked the music in the movie so much that I bought the CD and was not disappointed at all. It's wonderful and I listen to it constantly.

Yes, it's true that 90% of the time Broadway fans will want the original Broadway cast recording over any other version, and 95% of the time the full recording will beat any set of "highlights." But this collection of songs from the Rent movie may defy both trends. Rentheads surely have the two-disc Broadway version already, and this well-selected 65 minutes may satisfy their desire to have performances from the movie as well (and the movie has less music than the show anyway). On the other end of the spectrum, people who enjoyed the movie but don't feel the compulsion to own every note of what they heard might well be pleased with a single disc of highlights. Pick it up and live La Vie Boheme all over again. --David Horiuchi
Album Description
One of the longest-running shows in the history of Broadway, and one of its most beloved, Rent was the winner of the Pulizer Price for Drama and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Based on Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme," Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic in New York's gritty East Village. Now the powerful musical marks its tenth year on stage by coming to the big screen, acompanied by RENT Highlights From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

This is the perfect CD for those who love the music from the film, or even the Broadway show. I just bought this CD because I am new to "RENT". I first saw the movie 2 weeks ago and I am completely hooked!! I am also addicted to this CD, I listen to it atleast once a day (if not more)!! This is perfect for any "RENT" fans out there!!

We're Not Gonna Pay Rent!.......2006-06-11
I loved Rent, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money for the full version of the soundtrack. Highlights from Rent was PERFECT! It has all the main songs from the movie I was looking for, and that was important to me. I play this soundtrack constantly, from beginning to end, singing along the whole way. Every song on her deserves to be on here - it's amazing.

I got Rent the CD for my birthday, and I looked and I thought it did not have my favorite song on there:No Day But Today well I was exploring the Rent website, and I found out that it was NOT called No Day But Today, it was called Finale B I was so happy and I listen to it over and over and over and over again without me getting sick of it! Great CD totally recommended ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Compialition.......2006-03-29
This is truly a highlights cd, with the only dissapointment, to me, being that the song "Another Day," is not included. But the rest of my favorites Without You, Rent, Tango Maureen, and, of course, La Vie Boheme, make this a great cd for any Broadway lover.
Was very very impressed with special features.......2006-03-24
An original "Rent Head", I saw this movie at the cinemas and was less than impressed with the finished product. I found that on watching the DVD I have since completely changed my opinion. The CD is fantabubulous - I love IT!. It is all the wonderful music from the movie and if I gush anymore it will come across as very very ridiculous! Just buy it - its great!
It is an absolute must for anybody who fell in love with the musical!
