The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Though she's made a name for herself in Boston as both a songwriter and as a chef, Mary Gauthier has little in common with her more refined New England folk brethren. Her aspirations and influences point toward the twangy lyricism of Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Townes Van Zandt. If the Louisiana native hasn't yet attained their mastery, she's headed in the right direction. Gauthier's first widely available release is filled with striking, unrepentant outcasts--from convicted murderess Karla Faye Tucker to, as she sings in the title song, "drag queens in limousines, nuns in blue jeans, dreamers with big dreams, poets and AWOL marines." Her characters are captured in words that are rarely sentimental, always keen, and often wise. Against a simple but vivid acoustic backdrop, Gauthier's thick drawl rings with the truth of deeply felt emotions. Whether in a peaceful love song or a brutally realistic vignette, Gauthier lends every line great affection, dignity, and respect. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Not pretty, but pretty brilliant!.......2006-03-17
I have not been able to take thus CD out of my deck. I'm not sure that is a healthy thing, as this music is not uplifting, and it's not pretty, it is down right brilliant poetic blues with understated accompaniment. Cut to the bone lines like "The truth is...hard to know so we go with points of view, now I count my lucky stars; (I used to count on you). If you are in the mood for some butt kicking self pity, by proxy of course, this is an album to get and er, enjoy, dark, dark dark.
Spare, stark, visceral, honest, grittyýbrilliant........2004-04-19
Last night I saw Mary Gauthier in concert, opening for John Prine. I'd never heard of her. As soon as she was finished with her set I went to the merchandise stall and bought this CD.
Drag Queens in Limousines is spare, stark, visceral, honest, gritty-all the things an honest folk music excursion is supposed to be. While many compare her style and substance to more contemporary musicians, who she reminds me of is a young, dynamic, angry and eloquent Bob Dylan. Her style is spare in the extreme-usually a guitar and some harmonica riffs make up the sum total of the musical support of these song. Her voice is also Dylan-esque-low and gravelly and charged with emotion. On the other hand, Mary has a knack for developing a light tune that enhances the story without detracting from it.
Charged with emotion would also describe most of these songs. "I Drink" is the unapologetic anthem of a feisty alcoholic who is aware of the disgust and opprobrium her habit and mere presence evince among those she encounter but who clearly doesn't give a hoot. Drag Queens is a tale of a runaway. Karla Faye the tale of a murderer.
This is gritty country-ish folk album. The characters and stories it tells are people on the margins and the woe that befalls them-and the innate spirit they have that keeps them going, head up, fighting to the end, all obstacles in their paths notwithstanding.
One senses that Ms Gauthier is not all that different form those she sings about. This lends an aspect of honesty and angst that permeates the whole exercise. This is a virtuoso performance and an extraordinary album. One can only hope that there are many more to come.
A lifetime ain't no time at all.......2003-03-26
Mary Gauthier writes songs in the vein of Lucinda Williams, and tells tales of life on the dirty boulevard in even rougher terms than Lucinda.
The CD contains songs about broken relationships, topless dancers, junkies, and misfits, and makes you wonder how much of it is autobiographical. Some might consider this subject matter depressing, but as you listen, a yearning for love and redemption emerges, and there's a sad sense of beauty in it all. In reading some of her road diaries on her website, it sounds like she's found at least some of the things she's been looking for, so don't be surprized if by the next CD, we'll hear more uplifting lyrics. Regardless, she's a great storyteller, something which isn't likely to change.
If you buy one CD this month..........2002-09-17
try this one. Think Bruce Springsteen "Nebraska" or anything John Prine, or Willie Nelson.... Heard "Drag Queens" on Boston radio WERS and had to own it. The rest of the album is terrific. Great lyrics, haunting melodies.
The Gauthier Way.......2001-02-15
This album was one of my great discoveries of the past year, a really pleasant surprise. For fans of really basic music, boiled down to brilliant traditional songwriting and a voice that hides nothing from you, this is a terrific purchase.
The sound is great: light guitars, stripped-down country backings all force Mary's great voice front and center. Good thing, too, because the words are often stunning, full of honey in their heartbreak. From relationships that appear to wear down like the nub of a pencil, to bleary nights spent holding up bar counters, Gauthier's lyrics plumb the depths of the dark and come up smelling sweetly of either gentle resignation or light laughter. Like Mark Eitzel, but without the near-constant self-flagellation, Gauthier seems to sing her way into self-discovery on each and every song. "Fish swim," she sings, and then, as if shrugging her way casually into her own true talent, "I drink."
The only bad thing I can say about this CD is that some of the songs sound a lot like each other, and that's only partly bad when songs sound that good.
One final thing: some of the publicity I've seen for this CD (including Mary Gauthier's website) has gotten into the annoying habit of trying to sell her life story rather than her music (ran away from home, big bad city, drink, drugs, yada yada yada; I have visions of Vanilla Ice screaming he's from the streets). The music speaks more about what Mary has been through/put herself through than any she-walks-the-walk marketing copy on a website is going to say. And Mary says it all better.

Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. But no small part of the show's intensely propulsive drive -- and much of its dramatic tension and atmospheric textures -- are consistently delivered by the music of young composer Sean Callery, who's won three straight Emmy nominations (winning once) for his contributions to the series. The composer personally selected and annotated the tracks for this anthology of his best work from the show's first three seasons, anchored by a complete version of the show's usually truncated theme. Though it shares similarities with Michael Giacchino's work on Alias, Callery's work here is consistently darker, an electro-organic fusion that spans tense, brooding orchestral passages and thrashing dollops of metallic-edged techno. Yet the composer also delivers moments of melodic, almost mournful solitude, while the third season's story line inspires some evocative Latin influences as well. Callery's background in sound effects editing contributes much to the rich sonic textures here, yielding a pioneering approach that portends a bright future for the composer. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
24 Soundtrack.......2007-06-02
For fans of Sean Callery's work on 24, this CD is a must have. This soundtrack is also very enjoyable on long drives, and it brings you right into the show.
LOVE 24 MUSIC.......2007-02-11
It was wonderful. As alway Sean Callery's music is outstanding. When you listen to it you can remember the scenes from 24. I would highy recomend it.
I wish..........2006-12-04
Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.
A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15
As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".
As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".
One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)
If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!
A excellent score for a excellent TV drama!.......2006-11-12
This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!

Customer Reviews:
Incredible first album.......2002-12-20
This first album is incredible. Because it's wild, true and spontaneous. You know, Bob Dylan doesn't write songs like "Hattie Carroll" anymore. Mary does. We feel the raw rebel thing: she's herself from the marginal people, and she sings for them - though it's not conscious: there's not any commercialism here (what's worse than the commercialism of the rebel thing?).
Actually, with many other singer-songwriters not very well known, Mary incarnates what's so human, real and exciting about what we call the "americana" today, a musical world which stands wild and true because the artists are performers on the road who make music by love of music, whatever they sell records much or not. They don't mind of reaching a wide young audience, they don't care of the rock'n'roll circus ("Rock & Roll Lies").
If you love John Prine, Fred Eaglesmith, Slaid Cleaves, Greg Brown... you'll love Mary Gauthier. You're in the same world. I'm not sure this is the one of Ryan Adams.
Let's speak more about this first album: you hear a voice - a provocative, defiant voice (this is how sounded the 60's Dylan); you hear a sound, an immediate feeling - punchy on upbeat songs, with excellent players; the slow ballads are scotching: how can a person sound so right to your heart? "Goddamn HIV" is pure and straight, it's unbelievable. Now just tell me here's not a great singer-songwriter: only the best ones can make that. And how about the music? As a french I can just be moved by the melody of "Ever Easy", without paying attention to the lyrics (though they're excellent). Her tender singing must be for something as well.
There is also light and humorous stuff with "You're All I Wanna Do" ("the way you leave the bathroom gives me a heart attack"...).
That makes of "Dixie Kitchen" an album as unpretentious as involuntarily important, because it keeps the music alive, as long as the music will be done that way.
Down Home As Country's Gonna Get.......2002-07-06
The Fred Eaglesmith discussion list was abuzz with news of Mary Gauthier; so I decided to pick up her disc & see what all the fuss was about. Dixie Kitchen is about the most down home that country's likely to get. Mary didn't go to opera class to learn how to sing country; she doesn't pull any punches; she lays it on the line; and lays it down clean. "When you're 10 years old, it's cute to be a tomboy, but in a couple of years you gotta deal with the ways of the world," she sings on the opener, shouting out, "Sorry, Mom," as her live wire acoustic guitar sails through the song. The breakup song "I Don't Know Nothin' About Love" is a track that went past me the first few times with this CD, but now is one of my favorite tunes. "The Other Side of Free" with its slow mandolin is pretty good. In a most unlikely country setting, Gauthier does a real good job on the anti-AIDS ballad "Goddamn HIV." "I've been a queer since the day I was born," she sings from a gay man's point of view recounting the ravages of that brutal disease. "Old Love Never Dies" is a soft song that she as much moans as sings. "You're All I Wanna Do" is a lustful country tune with a bouncy guitar line, "Sexual satisfaction turned into a chicken fight." Matt Leavenworth's gorgeous fiddle enhances the simple melody of "Ever Easy," "I don't want to leave you; and I don't want to stay; I don't want to keep going on this way." "Skeleton Town" is a peppy little tune about terminal illnesses. In "Rock & Roll Lies" Gauthier references Jack Kerouac, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley & Jim Morrison with a vocal holler straight from Hank Williams, "What's left when the glory consumes you & you can't tell the truth from the lies, while the one thing you still believe in, you must sell to whoever will buy." She nails the contradictions of popularity and commercialism. The CD concludes with country hoedown "Mama Louisiana." Mary Gauthier's music is rustic, rough edged, not perfect pitched -- she won't be doing duets with Celine Dion. But on Dixie Kitchen, she sings with honesty; her music is about something; and the musicianship is first rate. U snooze U lose!

Hail Moloko! Long live Moloko!.......2007-04-13
Although they have disbanded, Moloko is one of my favorite bands, and this effort is one reason why. In fact, everything they do is fantastic, and unpredictable; Roisin is a true artist and risk taker in ways that I wish the "pop divas" could be. Roisin probably never will be a superstar, even though she can really sing, and is very attractive. Her desire to create, and not just ape current trends will prevent her from reaching a larger audience, which is a shame, in a way. Get this album, get ALL Moloko albums, and get the fun "11,000 Clicks", the DVD of their Brixton concert (which I am grateful they made before they broke up. Don't believe the first reviewer above, Moloko is
wonderful.
Moloko: I Am Not A Doctor - Don't do it!!.......2006-01-19
I heard Moloko newest dance version of "Sing It Back" on the radio the other day (1/06) and HAD to have more. So I hit Amazon, read these reviews and bingo - I dropped $45 bucks for two of her CDs (this being one), both imports. Got them today and was INCREDIBLY disappointed. Yes, they are quirky, curious and fun in their own way, but NOTHING like her newest single - nada, zilch, zip. Very experimental, which I applaud, but a bit too experimental if you ask me, and of course I was expecting something way different based on the other reviews. In all honesty, between the two discs (32 songs total!), I MAYBE like ONE...SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy them USED if at all. Really...Trust me!!
IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?.......2004-07-09
I just got this CD and to say it surpasses Moloko's debut, "Do You Like My Tight Sweater" is an understatement. This go round on "I Am Not A Doctor", Roisin Murphy's vocals are more mature and tighter than on the first release, and the production is flawless, mixing various styles together into a cohesive package that is sure to impress any funkateer, pop-fan or clubhead! Highly Recommended!
Trippier, hoppier, and even more fun for you..........1998-09-13
If you were blown away by Moloko's debut release ("Do You Like My Tight Sweater?"), you'll be even more tickled by their follow up, "I Am Not A Doctor". The fifteen tracks show Moloko at their most infectious -- even if there's not a doctor in the house, you won't mind waiting around for a cure once this album gets under your skin. Although some of the tracks ("Sing it Back", "Caught in a Whisper") are a wee bit more more generically "dance" oriented than those on "Sweater", fans of Moloko's zany improvisiational, Freud-gone-amok lyrics and beats won't be disappointed by such standouts as "Knee Deep", "Be Like You", "The Id", and "Over My Head". Those curious little interstitial tracks you loved on "Sweater" (i.e., "Dirty Monkey") are back here again as well -- "Sorry" gives you a minute and a half of beats a la Kraftwerk circa 1981 with a lyrical delivery Yoko Ono would be proud of. If all this sounds confusing and pretentious, relax, it's not -- "I Am Not A Doctor" is 70 minutes of unabashed fun and groovy beats with intelligence and style. Worth every penny of the import price for the gorgeous cover graphics alone.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.
The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.
