The 22-year-old son of two of rock's most enduring icons releases his debut album with production help from his girlfriend, Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto. Unfortunately, Sean has neither his girlfriend's sense of humor, his mom's experimental boldness, nor his dad's pop genius. The bulk of the album is devoted to soft rock, singer/songwriter material delivered at deliberate tempos in Sean's thin, wispy voice. Periodically--just to prove he's a '90s guy and not just copying the '60s--he throws in a hard rock interlude, a bossa nova rhythm, a jazz instrumental or a hip-hop sample before getting back to the same, dreary balladry. He does have a knack for appealing chord changes and melody lines, but he doesn't have the vocal chops to execute them. --Geoffrey Himes

I bought this CD when it first came out and loved it. It's not as good as his new album "Friendly Fire" (2006)which is AMAZING but it shows you how he got his wings.

The Freewheeling Sean Lennon.......2007-01-06

I must say, I really quite dig the cd/dvd set of Sean's 2006 release "Friendly Fire." I dig it so much that in an inspired state, I recently ventured to the local record store and bought "In the Sun," Sean's first slbum and the album that you my dear friend are reading a review of. Now, on to the review. While "Friendly Fire" has recuring themes and a fairly uniform style from track to track, "In the Sun" is far more freewheeling and eclectic, jumping and skipping around different genres. A sense of breezy fun is what I got out of this record. Lennon even kicks up his heels and rocks from time to time on this album (outrageous!) It's a pleasant record from start to finish as well as being more fun than a barrel of monkeys to listen to. It's keen!

I give this cd 3 and a half stars. Sean is Absolutely 1/2 Yoko and and 1/2 John, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. It must be hard getting any acceptance as an artist and musician having to follow a father as famous as Sean's. I want to resist comparing the two (Julian as well) but it's extremely difficult. So I won't fight it. Sean's Yoko half dominates (much like Yoko seemed to dominate John) in that most people would consider much of this album to be a little extreme and uneven. The John in Sean seems to shine through in some spots and creates some great moments on this album. At least there's no Yoko-like screeching.
Songs from John's psychedelic period have some similarities in their use extensive texture and trippy arrangements. Sean uses some suprisingly organic synth parts (Mystery Juice, Queue), the panning (using of left and right stereo channels) is quite similar to a lot of Beatles stuff (check the placement of drums and guitar being extreme left and right respectively on Bathtub). I don't know if Sean had much to do with it, as it could just be the sound engineer's choice. Sean's voice sounds like John only subtlely on this album.

Mystery Juice - A strong track with a great melody and ballsy chorus. A smart choice to begin the album with this track in that it sort of sums up the flavor.

Into The Sun - Weaker track. Islandy jazz duet with his GF that goes on a little too long in my opinion.. although, the melody is strangely infectious. I like Sean's voice in his low register best.

Home - A decent track. Cool use of vibraphone and neat backing vox creates a nice mellow feel. The chorus on this tune is catchy and rocks.

Bathtub - A decent track. Beatle-ish production quality and mixing. Lacking both a climax and a catchy melody.

One Night - Throwaway (but sometimes those are good, right?). Lacks dynamic.. and just sort of goes on... luckily it's short enough to avoid becoming tedious. Very 'singer/songwriter.'

Space Ship - A stronger track. Cool finger picking on the guitar, excellent chord progression. These lyrics seem stronger than the rest. Great melody. This songs seems more developed than most of the others.

Photosynthesis - A Throwaway. These are talented guys, but this little interlude doesn't do anything for me.

Queue - Strong track. It sounds more like a Beatle song than any of the rest, although some compare it to the Beach boys, I think it's more Beatle-ish because of devices like the reversed instrumentation, organ intro, jaunty "penny lane"-ish beat and simple voiced harmony parts.

Two fine Lovers - decent. the melody is catchy and the groove on the wah-bass combined with a few tasteful synth parts makes this track more dynamic than the weaker tracks on the album.

Part one of the Cowboy Trilogy - Novelty song. Rocky Raccoon meets Bungalow Bill, only not as good.

Wasted - Throwaway track. Sean improvising over two chords.

Breeze - Weaker track. Good melody but drags on and on.

Sean's Theme - throway track. Starts out with a decent melody and instrumentation but suffers from lack of development and Yoko-type weirdness towards the end.

I'm suprised that this kid's melodic sense seems to be stronger than John's in some ways. John had a habit of sticking to one note for many of his melodies, then moving up or down in small intervals (think Lucy in the Sky "follow her down...", Julia "half of what I say", and Come Together "here come old flat..."). When he did move, it wasn't as frequent as Paul, who liked to jump around more with his melodies. Although this kid's melodies are suprisingly dynamic I don't feel that it's enough to match his father's stuff... but again, it isn't really fair to hold him to that standard.
The stronger componants of this album are Sean's sense of melody and texture. Songs like Mystery Juice, Spaceship, Bathtub and Queue take full advantage of this texture sensibility. Songs like 'Photosynthesis' and 'Sean's theme,' where his jazz influences dominate, are probably too artsy or weird for most casual listeners to enjoy.
Though extremely unique in sound, Sean's voice is very weak and nasal... not to mention out of tune! If you're Bob Dylan and a great poet, then it's easier to overlook this kind of thing.. but much like John, Sean's creative ideas seem to out-pace his musical talents... though not technically a good singer, John's voice was more in tune and had a very present quality to it (even though John liked to have it run through filters during the Beatle years). Sean has no power or presence to his voice, but he makes up for it with good melodic and harmonic ideas. Perhaps some voice lessons and a few years will yield a stronger voice in the future. Sean's songwriting on this album is uneven, but he's bubbling with good ideas. I'm looking forward to his next release.

This is the worst album I've ever heard. John Lennon is the most overrated act in history, and Yoko's an absolute joke. Sean just proves the apple never falls far from the tree. What did we expect?

I have been listening to Rusted Root for quite a while now, and somehow had never listened to this CD. I never knew what I was missing. This CD is great. It not only has a great version of Send Me On My Way, but the Cat Turned Blue is amazing. The song Won't Be Long is one of my personal RR favorites now. I would recommend this CD to any RR fan.

in no way can one classify the sound of rusted root into one genre. it is unique, so much so that i'll be redundant and say it's very unique. if you haven't heard their music before, imagine taking an african, an american or englishman influenced by rock & roll, one from the land of a billion people, two women with a feminist spirit and a shaman, give them instruments with which they are highly skilled, and let them play. that will sound something like rusted root. who gives a feck about the lyrics?, albeit they aren't bad.

Best acoustic jam band.......2004-03-13

I'm probably biased writing this review since I grew up listening to Rusted Root in Pittsburgh. I've never heard any band like them and that is a rare thing. I'm on my fourth copy of this CD, having worn out the others. This CD never gets old. The Root strayed from their original raw acoustic sound in future albums. When I Awoke is their first outing on a major label, it's good but not great. Crual Sun is great. Just buy it and you'll see.

Classic Rusted Root -- REMASTERED!.......2003-11-26

Ah Rusted Root! A good old-fashioned jam band, unaltered by commercial popularity. This newly remastered version of their original, self-produced album reminds us why we love this band so much. A definate keeper for anyone who loves RR and hasn't gotten their first album yet. And my personal recommendation -- if you love this band -- go see them live. I've seen them twice, and they are by far and away the best band I have ever seen live. Amazing drum breaks, great banter, and music that frees your soul.

brilliant.......2003-04-05

As an electronic music fan, I've always been a stickler for recording quality and a technically refined sound. Well guess what? This disc has neither and is about the most charming thing I own. It hasn't left my changer since I got it. The songs are very rough - many of them have seen more refined versions appear on later Root albums - but nothing except perhaps for When I Woke has the same kind of jam band charm as this disc.

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David Vernier

Choral work at it's finest........2007-06-03

I really enjoyed this work. I was first introduced to this title through American Gramophone's website and was also my first introduction in the works of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. You do not have be religious to enjoy this work. I find the music uplifting and very sublime. I have listened to it many times, and I find that my favorite period to play it is in the morning hours. .

I have since purchased many other Rutter titles including "Images of Christ", and more recently "Lighten our Darkness"

13 years ago, I had the tape of brother sun, sister moon and as a teenager and I would play it every night as I slept, I loved it. I dont know what happened to it and I have ever sence been looking for it, and I just baught the CD and am so excited.

Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.

--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.

--Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.

I do love this cd, but tend to play certain tracks as my first love is chant. I play the Victimae Paschali Laudes in the car and sing along - it is so very beautiful that this rendition of this Easter Chant is worth purchasing this cd alone. I love that one track so much, my only criticism of the cd is that I wish they'd centered the entire cd on chant - and I hope they will do one like that in the future because the quality of the voices is stunning.

I originally obtained this CD through Minnesota Public Radio. The first time I listened to the Ubi Caritus, I was moved to tears. The CD became my favorite to play at Christmas and other times. I gave the CD to a friend who has moved to Oregon, deeply regret that it is no longer in production.

After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Irving Berlin at his best.......2007-06-26

OK. Full disclosure: I'm one of those helpless souls who is just madly in love with the sounds that emanate from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's vocal chords. I suppose there are many artists who can interpret Irving Berlin's songs with more, what's the word, authenticity?

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.

But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.

We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.

I, for one, feel privileged.

Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

This album exemplifies Kiri's amazing, vast dose of talent for musical interpretation. Though I tend to enjoy mostly classical music, this album has opened doors to a wonderful world of classical-jazz, which I find quite beautiful! Perhaps for some, it is an aquired taste...yet I was hooked the moment I heard track one...and have since become quite the "modern Kiri" fan!~Brava once again~

If you like Irving Berlin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!

I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.

Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!

Just terrible! Although her voice has mellowed and is quite beautiful, Ms Te Kanawa has absolutely no instinct or feel for this distinctly American music. She's just lost in her own peculiar Kiwi wonderland. She is not aided but what have to be some of the worst arrangements of this music ever recorded.

"Touch the Sun" is the third installment of pianist Eric McCarl's "Trilogy of Light," a collection of original pieces written over the course of the past twenty years. The fifteen piano solos range from quiet and pensive to upbeat and jazzy, with the majority being more on the reflective side. Overall, this CD has a warmer, more contented mood than the two previous releases, although it certainly isn't breezy. The music has enough structure to hold it together, and enough improvisation to make it feel spontaneous and in the moment. McCarl's playing style is always expressive and full of color, and the sound of his piano is beautiful.

The CD opens with "Journey's End," a piece that has a sense of moving forward and also of looking inward. Perhaps triumph without victory as yet? The title track is a bit more ambient and floating, with lots of open space between the musical phrases. "Alone Place" is also very open and minimal, with the damper pedal creating an echo effect that is both lonely and chilling - this is definitely one of the darker tracks. "Soft Light" is very calming, peaceful, and gentle. Most of the notes are in the upper and middle registers on the piano, but McCarl brings in some deep bass notes here and there that give the piece a different dimension. I really like it! "Walk On Water" is another favorite. The first part is structured and melodic, and then segues into a more improvised section that seems both reverent and questioning. The simple rhythm is quietly intense, creating a sense of peace and calm. Very effective! My favorite piece is "Sun Goes Down," which begins with a bluesy feeling and a slinky rhythm that is infectious. The piece is very free, but weighted by some deep bass accents. Some sections sound improvised, and the second half of the piece is more rubato with the original rhythm weaving in and out. My other favorite is "Blue Blue City," which is rhythmic, jazzy, and very, very cool ( a double-entendre where both meanings are accurate!). The closing track, "Window SIll," returns to a reflective mood with lots of open spaces between the musical thoughts, and passages that are full of passion - a serene way to end this impressive album and the Trilogy itself.

Having spent so much of his adult life working on the music for this project, it will be interesting to see where Eric McCarl goes next, musically. In the meantime, treat yourself to "Touch the Sun," "Atlantis Lost," and "Seeking the Light," aka "The Trilogy of Light." This is music that is meant to be listened to, not relegated to the background. Find a comfy spot, close your eyes, and let the music take you away! Recommended!

Another album from an Austin band that I stumbled upon and ended up liking quite a bit. A very nice and engaging sound centered around guitars and pianos. Actually, the music contains a lot of the same sounds you would hear on a lot of mainstream radio stations. Take a little Tom Waits and mix it with some Leon Redbone and toss in a little Randy Newman. Now that has to perk your curiosity some?

Excellent melodic hard rock album.......2007-01-11

Wow, you can add another name to the list of top-tier melodic hard rock acts - Tony O'Hora. The journeyman vocalist, who has spent time in various bands like Onslaught, Praying Mantis, and Highwire, issued his first solo album in early 2006, and it is an absolute winner.

Escape Into the Sun is a highly melodic, yet heavy hitting record that fans of TNT, Pretty Maids, Pink Cream 69, Last Tribe, and Starbreaker should love. It doesn't hurt that Magnus Karlsson (Last Tribe/Starbreaker) is on board handling production and songwriting duties. The combination of Karlsson's skills and O'Hora's dynamic voice (think of a more restrained Tony Harnell) works quite well, and the result is a triumphant melodic hard rock album.

If you like any of the bands listed above, you owe it to yourself to check out Tony O'Hora's debut Escape Into the Sun. You won't be sorry.

Debut from underrated band.......2006-06-28

I'm mostly writing this review to dispute the only other review on this album. While DMC's debut dabbles in New Wave territory, there's much more bouncy power-pop to be found. From the loose, earthy acoustic jams of "Everything" and "Sing Hallelujah" to the light pop-punk of "Need A Love" and "All Good Generals" this is a well-rounded snapshot of early '90s SoCal Christian Rock. The lyrics are evangelical without being preachy and YES, the lead singer Davia Vallesillo is a beautiful girl. She also stayed with the band for at least the next release, the more developed "Welcome Race Fans". Having seen Dakoda Motor Company play live more than once I can say that it's a shame more people didn't know about them. I guess it only costs a quarter to enlighten yourself. It would be well-spent.

Christian New Wave?.......2005-11-17

Professional Surfer Peter King formed this band and cut a few CDs. The music slants towards Southern California New Wave Christian music. All the lyrics are without a doubt Christian.

This CD "Into the Son" is the best of the band's three releases primarily because of the beautiful voice of young lead singer Davia Vallesillo. Davia left the band shortly after this CD was released. She has a beautiful voice and sings passionately especially in the song "Grey Clouds".

Rather than placing the focus on Davia's voice, Peter King pursued his interests in the style of music that caught his ear which is fine. He probably enjoyed every moment of it. But I would rather have heard a few more gentle ballads sung by that beautiful voice of Davia.

Unlike most live albums, A Groove So Deep is not a recording of a performance before a screaming audience. For this project, Marlon decided to bring his band, Mood Control, together for a series of sessions in which the musicians experimented with different approaches to favorites from his critically-acclaimed debut release, Enter My Mind, and songs written especially for the new project. From over 14 hours of recorded material, Marlon selected just over 70 minutes to become A Groove So Deep: The Live Sessions.

A Groove So Deep: the live sessions is Marlon Saunders' second solo album. His first critically acclaimed album "Enter My Mind" was realeased in 2003. A Groove So Deep is a selection of live recordings where Marlon and his band Mood Control go as deep into the groove as their musical spirits and wits take them. And that's very deep in the heritage of black music.
A Groove So Deep contains thirteen tracks full of jazz, soul, funk and emotions. Five of them you'll recognize from "Enter My Mind" while Love Philosophy has previously been recorded with Jazzhole.The track Declaring Love might remind some of you of a superb edition of Soul and The City ,a column Marlon writes for SaveOurSoul.nl, which also has a spoken version for the radio broadcast. This guy is for real. I came up listening to all the great soul singers of the 60's and 70's and none of them has anything on Marlon Saunders. I have the studio album, Enter My Mind and it is great, but I am partial to well recorded live albums and this CD makes me want to go hear him live right away. I hope somebody brings him to Seattle soon. He is not well known out here so I would recommend he try to play something like Bumbershoot, the Labor Day music festival where a lot people would be able to hear him. A Groove So Deep and Coolin' are my favorite tracks on the CD but they are all slammin'. His band Mood Control sounds great too, real musicians.

I love Marlon Saunders and I especially love this new CD. I loved his first CD Enter My MInd but this live joint is amazing. I saw Marlon live with his band a few weeks ago at the Cutting Room in NYC with Angela Johnson. It was so amazing to see him live. He is so beautiful and sexy and he sang my favorite song Inspiration! If you want to hear good soul music then look no further. He is soul music's biggest star. I love you Marlon.

I loved Marlon Saunders' Enter My Mind, but A Groove So Deep is on another level. This is some raw soul music, where the whole band is together at the same time, not performing for an audience, but vibin' together as musicians. No matter how many times you listen to it, you will hear something new--somethin' cool the vocalists do creating background harmonies, somethin' funky happenin' on the bass or drums, somethin' jazzy on the piano, flute or sax, just the right rhythm on the congas--It may sound strange to say about a contemporary R & B recording, but Groove is actually exciting to listen to...This one's worth the money, because you'll want to play it again and again...just to see what you missed the last time.
