5 out of 5 stars Long Awaited, and a Fantastic DVD.......2007-07-16

As a DJ, I have had access to Rabbit in the Moon material over the past 10 years, as it was released single-by-single. Like many of their fans, I was hooked on Dave Christophere's audio wizardry with the haunting and evolving O.O.B.E. - (mistakenly labeled "Outer" Body Experience on the liner notes - though not a surprising tactic for a new remix.). Several of the track on this new album have been previously released as singles, and/or have been included in their live performances. Though some may find this a bit anticlimactic, it should be noted that everything has been remastered to a degree that it actually does seem new and fresh.

As others have noted, RITM is best experienced as a live act. The music is brought to life through the larger-than-life, kabuki theater-like performance and vocalizations of Bunny (Steve Eachon). Perhaps RITM are destined to become the Grateful Dead of modern Techno, as every show is different, and devoted fans follow their shows, and see them again and again, noting the slight changes to the mixes and song selections, and the ever evolving and exciting Bunny Experience.

With that in mind, it is only natural that they would include a DVD that included some of their live material, along with new and creative original video along with the CD.

The quality of the video and audio on this package is flawless and very entertaining for old and new Rabbit fans. One can only hope that they gather momentum from this release to tour heavily, and release another album of completely new material within the next 18 months. The newer material also has more vocals by Bunny, which I find to be an excellent trend which they should continue to develop in their music and live shows.

5 out of 5 stars A great release from a the legendary RITM!.......2007-07-13

I think this is a *fanstatic* release, mostly because of the DVD content, but I like the CD a lot as well. Being the fan that I am, I couldn't give this any less than 5 stars for that DVD content being what it is. Yes, there is some dated stuff on the album, but it is called "Decade", and the song "Deeper" alone justifies that title. I see some of the other reviewers who are fans, but giving it low-star reviews, that's really too bad. It may be because they were expecting a full new CD of all new material, and didn't get that. Still, I see that those of us who "know the deal", so to speak, know that the essence of Rabbit In The Moon is the live show, I think the DVD content gives a pretty close approximation to what it's actually like to see them live. But tell me, who, of the RITM fans among us, especially those who have seen them live in the least year, didn't FLIP out when they were listening to the "Decade" CD and heard the phrase "Look into the eye!" for the first time, on track 8.. with memories flooding in of Bunny with his TV-on-a-stick?? I know I did. And that song is followed by the AMAZING rendition of David Bowie's "Let's Dance", followed by Deeper (which is admittedly old
but is a classic and couldn't be excluded) but then there's a brand new mix of O.B.E. that, correct me if I'm wrong, has never been released before. (And I own the original Phases O.B.E. 12" record). I love the new mix of that song, and I think it's a great album, even though every single song doesn't thrill me. But even with this CD, some of the older RITM songs that I never really liked much before, like Dubbasex for example, listened carefully and given them another chance, and found they are actually very subtle and beautiful songs.

There is more newer material on the album than some reviewers let on, in fact well over half of it is new. There are a few ommissions, IMO, for example I would have liked to see "Electro Accupuncture" on this CD, but then again that has been released before on a CD, still I think it would have fit in well here though as well. I love the DVD the most, because it reminds me why I've been such a huge fan for so many years, with probably about 7 shows under my belt. To all the fans out there, buy this album! Show your support! Remember the old Zen Festial 96-97 shows, with Bunny, in his disco-ball suit, being lowered by a cable from the ceiling! remember how you felt at those times. They have earned our suport! To those folks new to the electronica genre, this is a good glimpse into understanding the engima that is Rabbit in the Moon... RITM so much more than can possible be described in one album, album review, DVD, magazine article, or antyhing else. There's a whole history and culture behind these guys'one-of-a-kind stlye of performance art, and I think this release captures the essence of it almost as best you could with the amount of material provided. Buy it for the DVD, but then take the audio CD, put in in your car stereo, put on track 8, and crank it up!

3 out of 5 stars Great yet lacking.......2007-07-12

So, if your a rabbit head like me, you've probably heard most of these tracks at their shows. So why is this CD a great purchase? Quite simply because you are a rabbit head and they need our support. If you're new to Rabbit in the Moon then you need to hear what the music is about. The really cool feature is that in the DVD each suit comes with an explanation which will help new listeners/show goers to understand the meaning of the show as a whole and the suits individually. Are there tracks missing? Absolutely. The now famous jungle track used for the dragon slaying sequence is missing, so is the old light suit track which is a favorite amongst show goers. However, the single most significant fact about this release is the release it self. If this goes good, we will see a new Rabbit in the Moon CD sometime soon. Remember, this is their first attempt at this, so lets support them. After all, they have been connecting to us for over a decade, the least we can do is buy the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-07-12

Yes, many of the tracks have been previously released. Yes, much of the album sounds like a product of the 90s. Should that be a problem if the music is good?

I am pleased to witness this finally see the light of day. The music sounds great with a pair of headphones, and the DVD only makes it better.

4 out of 5 stars 15 years later, they deliver... but no surprises.......2007-07-11

I've been listening to Rabbit in the Moon for 13 years... heck, the first time I ever rolled was at a RITM show in 1994. I love these guys. Now, this album is solid, but not ground-breaking. It's not really phoned in, but then it's not really innovative either. That's partially because these are almost all old tracks. I think there's actually only one track on the entire album that wasn't previously released. Some of these date back, literally, a decade. In fact, "Out of Body Experience" was released in '93, so they could have called it "Decade and a Half". Anyways, the new track is pretty cool, a cover of David Bowie's "Let's Dance". For longtime fans though, it's really about the DVD. The footage is great, including some from a protest rally at the WTO in the Czech Republic. So even though the album doesn't have much new to offer old fans, it's still worth picking up. For interested newbies, it's a must-buy. It's put together very well, with appropriate mixes of each track chosen. It nearly brought a tear to my eye finally hearing all these tracks in album format. I think that alot of "long-time" fans will be highly disappointed because they've never heard these tracks sitting at home, sober. Yes, obviously, ANYTHING will sound better when you're high, on a gigantic soundsystem. Go pick up some decent headphones, find some good visuals, and let RITM carry you away into your own out of body experience.

When this material originally resurfaced in an earlier Rhino-celebrates-the-'70s program, many rock scribes contorted themselves into revisionist pretzels: this isn't so bad, they argued--none too convincingly. There'll be none of that here: much of the music on this colossal box set is godawful. The world doesn't miss the likes of Sammy ("Chevy Van") Johns and Sammy ("Candy Man") Davis. Or at least it doesn't miss the records they cut during the decade of disaster flicks and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. That said, this elaborate box is something to behold. The lovingly compiled 92-page booklet provides background on the ridiculous (David Soul, C.W. McCall, Carl Douglas) and the sublime (Parliament, James Brown, the Staple Singers), and the music swings on the same pendulum, with Harry Chapin, Bill Withers, and Cat Stevens sitting amid Wayne Newton, The Captain & Tennille, and Meco's jittery electro-take on the Star Wars theme. Seven discs, 160 selections! To paraphrase a popular ad slogan of the era, you won't believe you listened to the whole thing. --Steven Stolder

2 out of 5 stars yuck.......2007-07-13

I should have read the description better regarding the sound bites between some songs. I found them to be annoying. The Time Life collection is so much better and it doesn't cost much more.

5 out of 5 stars Peace, man............2007-05-31

O.K. I'm 38. I was born in 1968 and I wasn't into a lot of the 70's music until the decade was on its way out. But my parents had so many great vinyl compilations by that time and I had my cool new little record player that I HAD to listen to all the songs.
And now, I find that I'm doing the same thing with this set of CD's! It's freakin' 1979 all over again!
How can you cram so much 70's goodness into this box set? And to get the ORIGINAL songs from the ORIGINAL stars is just groovy. Too many compilations now have the original stars doing remakes of their songs and it just seems pointless to me.
Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), unabashedly my favourite song of ALL TIME, (just ask those that have to endure it EVERY time I karaoke) finds a great spot here in its ORIGINAL glory.
If you're thinking of getting a 70's compilation, STOP THINKING!! BUY THIS ON IMPULSE AND ENJOY A HASTY DECISION FOR ONCE!!
There'll be no time to feel any guilt when you're singing along to all the classics you grew up with.
"Billy, Don't Be A Hero!" "You're No Good" if you don't "Rock The Boat" and "Let Your Love Flow"! "Me and Mrs. Jones" will be "Stuck In The Middle With You" just "Smokin' In The Boys Room" if you don't "Get Down Tonight"!!
But hey, if you think "I'm Not In Love" with this set and you don't buy it?
Well....."Everybody Plays The Fool" "You Sexy Thing"!!

5 out of 5 stars The great, the good, the bad and the plain awful, in one delightful package.......2007-04-15

So the decade of the '70's corresponds to my junior high, high school and college years. During that time AM and later FM radio supplied the leitmotifs for that era of my life. This CD collection captures completely what we listened to as fed by the top 40 charts of the time. Much of this material is outstanding, some of it was silly and some of it was awful (Morris Albert's Feelings, Terry Jacks Seasons in the Sun! So bad it is fun to listen to). This magnificent compilation captures it completely in all its '70's era glory. And in typical Rhino fashion, it is elegantly packaged with an outstanding booklet and boxed set. True I'm biased in that I even liked the sound bites.

It is a bit expensive, and some have criticized the inclusion of the Top 40 single versions over the definitive album versions, but hey guys/gals, this is what they played on the radio at the time. Also missing are some of the superstars, but as the booklet says, you probably have lots of those already (e.g., Paul McCartney, Elton John, mid-period Stones, Billy Joel, etc.)

I was hesitant about the cost, but after one full listen through, I'm extremely pleased. Thank you Rhino (and thanks to Amazon, too who listed the delivery time as several weeks but it came within one week).

4 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC, DODGY PACKAGE.......2007-03-12

This is as comprehensive as a Seventies collection can get. The MIAs are obvious (no Eagles, Neil Diamond, Fleetwood Mac, Carpenters, Pink Floyd) but what's surprising is the number of major artists that DID get on here. The sound quality of 'Superstar' isn't great, the soundbites ARE fabulous, but the packaging is hopeless. While the write-ups are excellent, and the content generally flawless, the booklet itself fell apart after I read through it three times. I know for a fact mine isn't the only one this happened to. Is this a ruse to pretend it's more than 25 years old?

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-01-13

If you like all the old 70's songs then you have to get this nice box set, well worth every single penny.

This decade-spanning compilation charts the singer-dancer-actress's transformation from rebellious teenager to sexy diva, along the way check-listing major hits like "Nasty," "Miss You Much," "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" and "Rhythm Nation." Two new tracks bookend the set, but even the older material--most of it helmed by writer-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--holds up remarkably well. --Courtney Kemp

4 out of 5 stars Great compliation of Janet Jackson's hits.......2007-05-15

Great CD, as contains all of Janet's best known hits.

5 out of 5 stars THE TALENTED JACKSON.......2007-02-10

Janet once again shows that she is the talented one in her family by blasting out some amazing dance tunes along with a few slower ballads.

5 out of 5 stars design of a wonderful career.......2007-02-02

This was the first janet album I ever bought and from then on I became a fan for life. This album is full of her hits from control and RN in addition to a hit from the janet. album and 2 new tracks. I love to play this album when I don't feel like switching to different janet CD's for hearing different songs. I don't think anyone's r&b/pop collection is complete without this compilation of some of the greatest pop music of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Janet is a legend!.......2007-01-27

This CD is abslutely incredible. The one and only reason that I took one star off is because of the weird concept. It inclues all her hits from A&M records, as well as two new songs and "That's the Way Love Goes". I understand the reasoning, butit is still a bit akward.

Regardless, that doesn't take away from the fantastic music. It starts off with "Runaway" which is a classic Janet 'holiday' song in the vein of 'Escapade". The camera'click sound on each beat is very catchy and unique.

The next few tracks are from Janet's 1986 breakthrough "Control": "What Have you Done for me Lately", "Nasty" and "When I Think Of You". All classic singles that have the most seductive dance beats and attitude that makes Janet who she is.

It continues with four tracks from "Rhythm Nation 1814": "Escapade", "Miss You Much", "Love Will Never Do...", and "Alright" They all have futuristic, yet 80's pop beat to them which is the tone for the RN1814 album. Of course, they'll all extremely catchy. "Alight" appears in it's radio remix form, which is a nice little treat.

The album continues with two more "Control" tracks: The amazing "Control", and "The Pleasure Principle". Jimmy, Terry and Janet did great job on these. They are R&B classics that sound even better today. Next are "Black Cat" and "Rhythm Nation. The former is also in radio remix form which is a nice luxury. "Rhythm Nation" is basically the same as it's album verison, with the excusion of Janet's 'pledge speech' at the beginning.

The last four songs are slow jams, each from a different album. "That's the Way Lvoe Goes" from 'janet.' is J's biggest hit, and with good reason. The beat is so sexy, as are Janet's vocals. The groove is absolutely blissful. Next is "Come Back to Me" (RN1814), a fantastic soothing R&B ballad that sounds ahead of it's time. "Let's Wait A while" is Janet's first hit ballad (from "Control"), and it's a very sweet song about waiting to have sex. Last but not least is anoher new track "Twenty Foreplay" which starts off as a sweet slow ballad, and then changes it's tone to a straight-up funky, love-making jam.

All-in-all,this CD demonstrates what an amazing talent Janet Jackson is, and what pleasure it is to have her as part of he music industry.

4 out of 5 stars Missing a couple of good ones, but still an affordable and mostly well-chosen overview.......2006-11-26

All of the albums whose material are collected on this set should really be listened to in their entirety, but this is still worth obtaining for the two new songs that were on it, the whimsical "Runaway" and the dreamy sex ballad "Twenty Foreplay". Both of these were great songs that sounded more like vintage hits instead of tacked-on filler.

This three-disc release from Om Records coincides with the tenth anniversary of the label. They've dug deep into the vaults to provide one part house, one part downtempo, and one part classics. While the first disc gets the mix treatment from DJ Fluid, the remaining two stand on their own unmixed. Disc one features a cross section of some of the more contemporary vocal house sounds from the usual suspects, including Kaskade, Colette, Chuck Love, and Marques Wyatt. Disc two is where things start to get really interesting--the slightly more slept-on downtempo sound of the label is represented by a collection of soulful, atmospheric tracks. Tracks from all-star producers J Boogie, King Kooba, and Raasham Ahmad keep things flowing with a touch of the hip-hop vibe. Disc three covers everything from the classic Mushroom jazz track "Remember Me" to the Joshua rework of Naked Music's "It's Love." This disc is a tour de force of the tracks that have kept crowds moving for the last 10 years. Om is covering a lot of ground with these discs: veterans of the scene get a chance to fill out their collections and newcomers get to catch up on the classics. Though the tempo and style of these discs vary, the vibe doesn't waver: warm, funky, and signature Om. --Anish Acharya

4 out of 5 stars Some Serious Cali Funk.......2006-03-09

I just purchased this 3 disc set last weekend and I have been playing it non-stop in my car. My only past experience with the Om label was with Ming + FS, PUTS, and J-Boogie because I usually tried to avoid their cheese ball vocal house releases. The first disc is pretty hit or miss for me because, again I just can't get into the really pop/straight forward vocal house...but there were a few surprise tracks on that disc that I liked. Really just the Fred Everything track and the one from King Kooba. Although the ones from Uneaq and Afro-mystik are growing on me. Disc 2 is all down tempo, even a little experimental in places, and aside from the queso track from Kaskade...everything on that disc is ill. Now disc 3 (the classiscs) is not quite as dope as disc two, but very close...and J.Boogie's 'Golden Nectar' sounds like it could have been released on Ninja Tune. Even some of the house tracks on disc 3 are pushing some creative boundries. No doubt, since I am not the typical Om fan, I probably do not enjoy this compilation as much as some will, but I was seriously impressed by it.

4 out of 5 stars The Show Must Go On (4 Stars).......2005-01-20

Naturally, the first thing most people will point out about this album is the huge void left by the powerhouse voice behind huge hits like "Keep On Movin'" and "Back To Life". Caron Wheeler's shoes aren't easy ones to fill, but on their second U.S. release, Vol. II: 1990 - A New Decade, the voices of Lamya, Kym Mazelle, Marcia Lewis, and Victoria Wilson-James prove to be more than capable of carving out niches of their own. When you hear Marcia Lewis' soulful vocals on the powerhouse jam "Get A Life" or when you witness the strength of Kym Mazelle's voice on "Missing You" you begin to forget the fact that Caron Wheeler is even missing. What I thought was special was the fact that they didn't try to replace Caron Wheeler with a bunch of copycats, but opted for original voices who each brought something different to the table.

While I love Caron Wheeler as much as the next person and would never ever dream of taking anything away from her vocal ability, I have to say that by the time you finish with this album you probably won't even notice that she was absent to begin with. I rated this album higher than their previous LP because it was more cohesive and consistent. While some of their biggest hits are contained on Keep On Movin', on this album Soul II Soul offers up some smooth jazz, R&B, and dance tracks with a hint of pop in a fluid blend that makes this album more enjoyable than their previous LP. I highly reccomend picking this up if you haven't already.

Standout Tracks: Courtney Blows, Time, Love Come Through, Missing You (My Favorite), Get A Life, and 1990: A New Decade

4 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to Soul II Soul?.......2004-02-19

This is actually one of the first CD's I ever owned so it holds a special place in my heart...

That said, this has actually held up pretty well over the years. It's their second release; features a great combination of dance music, r&b, and even a little jazz. It's got a great vibe from start to finish; very solid throughout. Very head-nod-friendly.

Good stuff. It's too bad this band basically fell off the face of the earth after this release.

4 out of 5 stars Caron Wheeler's absence is sorely felt!.......2003-04-05

Although vocalists Kym Mazelle, Victoria Wilson-James, Lamya, and Marcia Lewis perform well on their respective solos, the powerhouse performances of Caron Wheeler from the group's first album drops this recording down a few notches.

With that in mind, the instrumental selections are clearly the better offerings here: "Time (Untitled)" and "Courtney Blows", are jazzy enough not to be pop and pop enough not to be jazz.

That is Soul II Soul's contribution to the music industry: being something for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars New Ways But The "Formula" Goes Astray.......2002-02-11

An album that's not much of a big deal for a band that closed out the '80s with a giant BANG. Soul II Soul's follow-up is still a listening delight but unlike their monstrous debut, it lacks the aggressiveness, rawness, and most importantly, the absense of powerhouse vocalist Caron Wheeler. However, the group still trys to retain the formula that made them a household name with the hits "Get a Life," "A Dreams a Dream," and "Missing You."

4 out of 5 stars This is a good recording!!!!!!!!.......1999-08-25

Get a Life is a good example of Soul II Soul. There first album was good, but this one has a little bit of all kind's of beat's.People has a house groove.Missing You has the original Soul II Soul vibe, like Keep on Moving. It is a great song for any occasion.I have alot of fun with this recording.

Decade is a greatest hits album containing singles recorded between 1981 and 1989 ranging from "Planet Earth" to "Notorious." This CD provides any Durannie a chance to reflect on the transgression the group had made from the stark pop of "Girls on Film" to the New Romantic chariot "Save a Prayer" and finally to the dismal Brit funk embarrassment "All She Wants Is." The album could have been stronger if commercial hits such as "Notorious" were replaced with better songs like "New Moon on Monday." Nevertheless, the purpose of this collection was to display representative songs from each album created before 1989, and in this it succeeds. --Beth Bessmer

Album Description

Dutch edtition of 1989 singles compilation for the new wave icons, currently out-of-print in the U.S.. Standard jewel case.

5 out of 5 stars Duran Duran Greatest Hits.......2007-03-22

If you are a fan of Duran Duran or 80s music in general you owe it to yourself to pick up Duran Duran DECADE. Chock full of the top hits by one of the hottest bands of the 1980s (was DD everywhere in 1983/1984 or what, only Michael Jackson was bigger --- albeit a lot).

Songs that stand the test of time like Hungry Like The Wolf, Rio, and tons more, if you want a solid compilation of great 80s music with synthesizers ablazing, pick up a copy of Duran Duran DECADE!

**** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Utterly Fantastic!.......2005-10-01

If you want to get into 80s music, forget all the other bands and focus on Duran Duran. They have a talent that is un-paralleled, and this shows on this hits album.
If you don't know what album to get, but want to get into this band, buy Decade, as it has every single hit they've ever recorded - "Rio", "Hungry Like The Wolf", "Girls On Film", "Save A Prayer", "A View To A Kill", "The Reflex" and "Wild Boys", amongst some other fantastic tunes.
Pop-tastic, in the 80s way.
This is strange for me to rate, as I am generally a rocker at heart, but the 80s are my weakness, and Duran Duran are my biggest weakness from that time. And yes, I am going to see them in about three months and can't wait.
But seriously, this album is absolutely AMAZING, and everyone must own it who likes this type of New Romantic music.

3 out of 5 stars Dated Collection, Covers 80s Very Well, Terrible Liner Notes.......2004-09-08

There was a time when Duran Duran was as big a band as any band of the 80s. During the early and mid 80s, the quintet from England were the complete darlings of MTV and Top 40 "Hit Radio". As the late 80s occurred and there was a more of a trend away from synth-pop and more toward hard rock and rap - Duran Duran would start to struggle to find themselves. This collection "Decade" basically is a dated greatest hits collection that was released at the end of the 1980s that chronicles the band during the decade.

The reason why "Decade" is dated is because Duran Duran has still gone on in the 1990s and have released several other albums. The band released "Greatest Hits" in 1998 and that particular collection has every song that "Decade" has, plus some of the major songs from the 1990s. "Decade" still does a decent job at providing a collection of Duran Duran's works from its peak period - the 1980s. In fact, the song that I would have expected to have on this collection, but isn't is "New Moon On Mondays".

Duran Duran would release six albums in the 1980s and there is representation from each of the albums, plus the title song from the James Bond movie "A View To A Kill" (which was their only U.S. #1 period). I normally like to see a greatest hits collection presented in chronological album order. "Decade" comes close, but doesn't do this exactly. For example, "Is There Something I Should Know" is from the self titled "Duran Duran" album, but this follows "Save A Prayer" from the Rio album. I think they may have followed the order when the singles are released, but I'm not really sure. Of the six albums, you do get a view for how Duran Duran evolved as a group - so this is a good thing.

"Planet Earth", "Girls on Film" and "Is there Something I Should Know" come from the debut album "Duran Duran". These are songs when Duran Duran first hit the music scene. At this time they were still somewhat of an underground new-wave group that go a lot of play in the clubs. These songs clearly reflect that.

When the "Rio" album was released, this put Duran Duran mainstream. This was the hey-dey of the early 80s music and clearly the songs from "Rio" represent this well. "Rio" and "Hungry Like th Wolf" were boosted by some creative videos by the band, yet these songs stand very well on their own. Also included from this album is a very powerful ballad called "Save a Prayer". This particular song showed that Duran Duran had depth with their music. All of these songs catered very well to 80s radio and MTV. The third album, "Seven and Ragged Tiger" was basically a solid follow-up to "Rio" and Duran Duran rode the wave very well. "The Union of the Snake" and "The Reflex" represent this album on "Decade". The songs from these two albums were from the synth-pop period of Duran Duran.

Things started to change as the mid 1980s occurred. The band members began to find themselves and this is where the group started to splinter in projects such as the Supergroup Power Station (John and Andy Taylor) and the Duran Duran spinoff Arcadia (with the remaining 3 members Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor). Right before these projects occured, the band released a live album called "Arena". One of the songs on that album was "Wildboys". Perhaps each of the members were starting to find themselves as they started to depart slightly from the formula that had worked. This particular song had some moments of some terrific drumming by Roger Taylor. The band would also do the terrific song for the James Bond movie - "A View To A Kill" (not on a Duran Duran album) which continued along this theme and also had terrific percussions.

As the 80s progressed, Duran Duran and the music scene around them changed. Roger Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor would leave the band. Meanwhile, the music scene moved away from synth pop. Tears For Fears was a top synth pop band in the 80s and when they released their 1989 "The Seeds of Love" album, they basically reinvented themselves with a more natural sound. Duran Duran did make some adjustments to their formula - but not a reinvention of themselves. On Duran Duran's fifth album, "Notorious" - they do start to move away from synth pop - however it just didn't work. The title song "Notorious" was clearly not on par with the previous work they did during the decade. The other song from "Notorious" is "Skin Trade" deviates further from their traditional early 80s sound and isn't bad. Duran Duran's sixth album "Big Thing" would continue along the same trend started in "Notorious" and "Decade" includes two weak songs - "I Don't Want Your Love" and "All She Wants Is". "All She Wants Is" does incorporate some slight rap elements (although the song isn't a rap). These two songs are pretty weak and as the 80s ended, Duran Duran were no longer the pop darlings. Following "Decade" in the 90s Duran Duran would find some success in reinventing themselves with the "Duran Duran (The Wedding Album)".

The liner notes are terrible - in fact as bad as can be. The song titles are printed in big betters and the credits are very hard to read. There is no credits listed for the band members as well. There are also no lyrics. It would have also been nice to have some sort of writeup for this collection. Yes the content is here with the songs, but you can also get this on the more complete "Greatest Hits" album. This wouldn't be something I recommend unless you can get a good deal on it.

5 out of 5 stars This is HISTORY.......2004-08-22

Reading past comment I was laughing very loud.
Although everyone has its own opionion I believe that this compilation is worths the buying.
DD made history. This is not an opionion. This is a FACT. Then you may say if you agree or not and that is correct. We all have opionions. But FACTS are FACTS.
Now, further to that, if you wanna take a junmp into DD history I wuld probably reccomend the laytesta Compilation, that is DURAN DURA GREATEST HITS. It contains all major hits until 2000 (medazzaland cd included).
But htis compilation is nice too: songs from DURAN DURAN, RIO, SEVEN and the RAGGED TIGER. Believe me: they made pop music change. Forward.

Cheers,
Enrico

3 out of 5 stars i give it a "3" but it's better than that.......2004-08-02

ahaha. well, what can you say about duran duran's greatest hits? "rio" is probably the only certified masterpiece, but others, like "girls on film," "hungry like the wolf," "planet earth," and "save a prayer" (also maybe a masterpiece) are fun, too. but really, who are you kidding? just go hunt down _rio_ in a bargain bin somewhere and call it a day.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!.......2006-03-23

Well, I bought this album twenty years after I was first into the Untouchables. In the 80's when I was in High School, I had "The Untouchables" Wild Child album on cassette and I played it so much that I actually wore the tape out. When I bought this CD so many years later it all came back to me and I remembered every song on the album word for word. This live album is so fun to sing to and even more fun to dance to. You can't help yourself from dancing to it. I just saw the Untouchables perform live at the Belly Up in San Diego and they rocked the place down. Everyone danced all night. It was fun to see the old ska scene 20 years later. This album brings back so many good memories of fun times! If you enjoy ska music, you have to get this album!

5 out of 5 stars Love 'em or Love 'em.......2004-12-11

If you were into the local L.A. scene during the 80s ~ 90s, no doubt you would've heard of the UT's. A couple of my friends actually attended that show at the Roxy and claim it was one of best shows ever by any group. If you dig the ska/funk sounds of Fishbone, you will like the UTs. I view the UTs as an L.A.-centric version of Secret Affair/Mod-revival group. But their music definitely transcends L.A. This album does sum up the widely varying styles of the UTs - from the ska sounds to the Otis Redding cover, good ol' rock-and-roll, pure funk, to Mod sounds. Highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the UT's as They Should Be Heard - LIVE!!!.......2001-02-28

As a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo during the 1980's, I saw the Untouchables several times during their college circuit tours of the West Coast. A UT's live gig was an invigorating aural and visual experience. I was consistently blown away by their relentless energy, musicianship and showmanship. The last time I saw them was at "The Catalyst" in Santa Cruz, CA in 1992. Having owned this CD for nearly 10 years, I can honestly say that the music contained on "A Decade of Dance" faithfully captures the spirit and excitement of this fantastic, but sometimes overlooked, ska 'n' roll band.

"I Spy" kicks off the set with a mysterious keyboard intro and then explodes into a frenetic pace. The UT's keep the vibe positively upbeat throughout the CD, even on the sweet and slower-tempo gem "What's Gone Wrong". "Shama Lama" boasts some nifty guitar work and a nice trombone solo. The back-to-back punch of "Twist and Shake / Whiplash" is my favorite part of the disc. The horn section is phenominal throughout! The album closer,"I'm Not Your Stepping Stone", starts off with a fairly convincing guitar riff from Led Zeppelin's "Bring It On Home" before bringing the house down, and leaving the fans, myself included, screaming and sweating for more.

I doubt we'll hear anything new from the UT's in the 2000's, but I'm glad that I was able to see them perform, and am thankful that the essence of their live show has been preserved on this CD. If you're reading this review, I suggest you rush out and get it! Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Great Original LA Ska Band live recording!.......1999-10-02

The Untouchables are an original band! One of the first bands from the LA ska scene. Their sound is a mix of ska, good 'ol rock'n'roll and a little bit of funk. Great horn section. This album was recorded live at the Roxy in 1989, and is high quality. Has all of their best songs and really is a live greatest hits type album.

A good disc, as it contains most of her hits. But they could have done more! Four stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfection before "Nipplegate".......2006-02-15

This album's bangin', pure and simple! If you don't know why, you need to buy this album.

Back in the day before Mariah and Mary J., an iconic performer and entertainer rivaled Whitney Houston and MaDonna for pop music supremacy.

I grew up listening to Janet through the 80s and 90s. This album perfectly captures her better days.

This album is a compilation throwback to a day when artists only put the finest tracks on their album (no filler) and if you had a blockbuster LP -- like Control & Rhythm Nation were -- it meant you put out 5+ singles from your album (so they all had to be fire).

Hard to pick a favorite Janet song -- it's like picking your favorite child.

*Come Back to Me -- Favorite slow jam
*24Play -- Favorite sex jam
*When I Think of You -- Best radio-friendly jam
*Pleasure Principle -- Best Janet song that was made into video
*Control -- Favorite anthem song
*Nasty Girl -- Favorite dance track

This is an album you can listen to all the way through with high energy and an urge to replay each song.

Very highly recommended LP to add to your collection whether you're a pop/R&B fan or not.

5 out of 5 stars Music from the Rhythm nation.......2005-09-09

`Design of a decade' is Janet's career retrospective of the previous ten hit filled years. A US #3 and UK #2. An amazing collection released when she was 29 and had amassed a staggering 19 US top 10 singles, most co penned by her. The songs are however not arranged chronologically. Released in 4 different versions with slightly different track lists, this is the UK/Europe version.

Unlike quite a number of other female (especially dance) artists, Janet does not have a powerful voice. Her forte is finding catchy, funky, incredibly danceable tracks to suit her very pretty but wisp like vocals to perfection, and this collection shows just how clever that pairing is.

Opening up with the brand new track, the oriental tinged pop/R&B of `Runaway', with lyrics taking the listener on a trip around the world, and an amazing video. A US #3 and UK top 5 hit.

Next up is the razor sharp dance track `What have you done for me lately', her first US or UK top 10 (US #4 UK #3), and the lead off single from her ground breaking `Control' album. Featuring man bashing lyrics, this track inspired acts like Jody Watley (`Lookin' for a new love') and Pebbles to name a few.

`Nasty', the Prince like funk track calling for respect. `My middle name aint baby/it's Janet/Ms Jackson if you're nasty'. US#3 UK#19. Taken from `Control'.

The upbeat pop/dance number `When I think of you' was her first US #1, and a UK #10. From `Control'.

The catchy, fun filled `Escapade' which is faintly similar to `Runaway' was from the ambitious concept album `Rhythm Nation 1814', and was a US #1 and UK #17.

The sparse Prince sounding but hard hitting `Miss you much' was a US #1 and UK #22. From `Rhythm nation'.

`Whoops now' is a sunny sounding, bouncy pop number, released in the UK, it hit #10. It was a hidden track on some copies of the `Janet' CD.

The slowed down dance/funk of `Love will never do without you' with its chunky beats was a US #1. Featuring Janet sinking is a smoky lower register in the opening verses before launching into her familiar range. This was the 7th single off the `Rhythm nation' album, a record setting 7 top 5 singles off an album, a record that still stands today.

`Alright' with its epic video featuring cameos from Cab Calloway and Heavy D was a US #4. Also from `Rhythm nation' and featured here in a remix.

Next up was `The best things in life are free', a duet with Luther Vandross from the soundtrack to the movie `Mo money'. An upbeat house number, it hit #10 in the US and #2 in the UK.

`Control' was a US #5. A funk/pop song with hip hop beats and lyrics like `When I was 17/I did what people told me/Did what my father said and let my mother mould me/but that was long ago/I'm in Control'. Janet was telling us she was all grown up and taking control of her life.

`The pleasure principle' is an upbeat synth driven dance song, US #14. Taken from `Control'.

`Black cat' penned solely by Janet is head banging rock, a surprise lone change in musical direction from the `Rhythm nation' album. Another US #1 and UK #20, and featured here in a remix.

Title track `Rhythm nation' is a clunky industrial sounding funk number. US #2.

`That's the way love goes', due to contractual issues, is the sole representation from her uber sexy `Janet' album. A mellow R&B song, it was a US #1 and UK #2.

`Come back to me' (remixed here) is a ballad off the `Rhythm nation' album, a US #2. The tender ballad `Let's wait awhile' (about taking things slow in a relationship) was the 5th top 5 single off the `Control' album (US #2, UK #3), a feat that was achieved for the first time by a female, and which she surpassed on her next album.

The brand new smoldering ballad `Twenty fore play' (with a nice change in tempo midway through) closes out this superb collection from one of dance music's premier songstresses.

Full of fabulous photos of Janet from 86 to 95 (including stills from videos), a very lengthy write up (including snippets from interviews with Janet and Jam & Lewis) on the evolution of her music from 86 to 95, as well as chart statistics and numerous awards received by Janet.

Superb!

P.S. The CD cover photo is different from what is displayed here on amazon; it is a black & white shot of Janet from the bust up, smiling and looking slightly to the left.

A great review album of all of janet top 10 hits feauturing a hidden track from janet's 1993 releaase JANET. and The Best Things In Life Are Free, a B- side single note that most tracks from the 1993 release janet are neglected due to contractual reasons because the album was released under virgin while DOAD was released under her former label A&M who have no rights to her music from virggin due to the kindness of the virgin record company and janet herself that's the way love goes and whoops now are feautred great buy and alittle bit better than the u.s release due to the extra tracks 99.9/100

5 out of 5 stars no-one could of designed it better.......2004-04-24

Woah !! Janet Jackson's career over the past 20 years has been just abousolutely amazing !! (21 years to be exact) Anybody who has given this incredible album less than 5 stars, then I just can't understand why, it's amazing !! I especially got a shock when a reviewer on Amazon.co.uk said that this was a cheesy little hits collection over the past decade and titled their review BAD. You just need to listen more ... Well, this album managed #2 in the UK Top 75 and did not top the US Charts but has been highly succesful selling more than 1000 million copies around in europe (? - or around the world) but anyway, has been highly succesful. Many viewers and listeners argued that Design Of A Decade 1986 - 1996 had no releases from her flopped albums in the state, 'Janet Jackson' (her debut) and 'Dream Street' which flopped even more than her debut ! Please note that there were no singles from those 2 albums. Her 5th album 'Janet' also nearly being completely wiped out ... Here is my review.

The album 'Design Of A Decade 1986 - 1996' begins with one of the 'new' songs, at the time of the albums release, just at the end of 1995. 'Runaway' (10/10) has a fresh new upbeat and a nice chorus, and verses for that matter. This song grew up to be in my Top 10 Janet songs !! We are next treated to Three unforgetable classics from the 'Control' album. Beginning with 'What Have You Done For Me Lately' (10/10) Janet's first ever single !! Not many people release it but it was. It got up to #3 in the UK Charts spanning a 14 week period. Next is 'Nasty' (10/10) a underrated #19 in the Charts with, this time a 9 week period. Includes the Tounge (sp ?) in cheeck retort 'Janet miss jackson -if you're nasty' the whole of it being 'No my first name ain't baby, it's Janet Miss jackson' and so on (mentioned above) i love that part !! Should have been a US No 1. Next in is 'When I Think Of You' (10/10) track 4. We are treated to our first US No 1 here. A great song spanning in the Top 10 UK, infact spanning exactly at #10 and 10 weeks to. (10,10,10 - Am I confusing you ?!) So yep, this song did do very well. The next 2 songs were also US No 1's and from 'Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814'. 'Escapade' (10/10) and 'Miss You Much' (10/10) I abouslutely adore both songs but quite dissapointing positions in the UK (Escapade - #17 , 7 weeks + Miss You Much - #22 , 7 weeks) Nevertheless, I enjoy them alot !! The next track is one of the two songs from her 'express sexual feelings' album, 'Janet.' 'Whoops Now' (10/10) is a track I was so happy to have with me when I relaized It was on here. I'd heard it on the radio millions of times before and was like 'Janet sung this ?!' when i heard it was on here. A B-Side single along with 'What'll I Do' also from the 'Janet.' album. UK Chart position was #9 spanning 8 weeks. OH MY GOD !!!!!! - the next song is my all-time favourite Janet song, 'Love Will Never Do (Without You)' (11/10 !!) was another US No 1 for Janet and a great one to - but just #34 and 4 weeks on UK charts ... Must be because all people bought it in the US. The next song is 'Alright' (10/10), look at Love Will Never Do (Without You) and Escapade for information on this song. All i'm going to say is it's a great song. 'The Best Things In Life Are Free (Janet & Luther Vandross)' (10/10) is the next song. It spanned #2 on the charts and 13 weeks. I not that keen on Luther myself but this song totally made me forget I hated him !!! The next 2 songs are more unforgetable classics from Janet's 'Control' album. The title track itself ('Control') (10/10) and 'The Pleasure Principal' (10/10) Control was the only Janet song not to get in the Top 40 (UK) at #42, apart from 'Funny How Time Flies' also from the album 'Control' which didn't really have any contact to it. Control faired better in the US. For more info, see tracks 2,3 & 4. The next 2 hits are from '... 1814'. 'Black Cat' (10/10) and 'Rhythm Nation' (10/10) are wicked !! I'm lovin' the beginnig of 'Rhythm Nation' and the guitar solo on 'Black Cat' !!! Track 15 is 'That's The Way Love Goes' (10/10) the last single on here from the 'Janet.' album ... Where is 'Again, Because Of Love, If & You Want This' ? Classics like that. That's The Way Love Goes spent 10 weeks on the UK chart and it's highest chart position being No. 2. However, it managed US No 1 topping the charts for 8 Weeks !!! The next track is 'Come Back To Me' (10/10) from '... 1814'. All I can say is it's Janet's bbest ballad ever !!! The next 2 tracks are 'Let's Wait Awhile' and 'Twenty Foreplay' (another 'new' track) both worthy of 9/10 stars/points because they just ... well ... not as good as the other tracks on the album. Toppa hits collection !!!

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" CD.......2003-12-14

The CD is amaizing. It's what we've been waiting for. All the old songs that we used to listen when we were teens. " What is love?", "Celebrate" etc. One of the CD that you will listen to from time to time alone or with your friends and this music will always bring good memories.

3 out of 5 stars good.......2003-09-03

but this series of cds has a tendency to use a dj technic of making songs sound like they are skipping. Plus they also add some really corny tunes which you would not normally want. Granted you do have a chjance to hear songs you might not have ever had the opportunity to hear but so aren't worth the space wasted on the cd.

This CD (2 of them actually) are sweet! I can't stop listening to them! There are lots of classic dance songs in here (hence the title - decade of dance). It's mixed together really nice so beats just keep flowing. It's got all of my favourite classics on it and some bit of new stuff too. If you love the continues dance beat that keeps you pumped up then you want to get this!!
