Not since Maynard Ferguson's "Live at Jimmy's" have I heard a recorded live performance of a big band with the level of excitment and musical excellance as I have with Jim Widner's newest CD. The arraingements are great, the band is red hot and crowd sounds ready to riot. You can feel the excitment building between the audiance and the band and then explode through the soloists. This is a must CD for every big band lover.

Amazon.com

A dazzling and atypical musical score is the perfect tone for the gorgeous visuals of this anime film. Toshiyuki Honda's Dixieland jazz-influenced music is a daring counter to the futuristic vision of the three-tiered, near-robotic society. The title track is reminiscent of Woody Allen's theme for his futuristic film Sleeper. Half of Honda's score uses more characteristic orchestrations for several of the films' action scenes and the love theme ("Sympathy," which is later reorchestrated in the so-so end-credit song "There'll Never Be Good-Bye"). This is one of the indispensable anime soundtracks, and wonderful listening for even the non-anime fan. One demerit for the CD not containing Ray Charles's "I Can't Stop Loving You." The song beautifully counterpoints the explosive conclusion and is a vital part of the whole music score. --Doug Thomas

Album Description

The future of robots and humans . . . as predicted by Osamu Tezuka.

Based on the classic comic by legendary illustrator Osamu Tezuka, Metropolis has been brought to the screen by two of the most respected figures in Japanese animation today (Katsuhiro Otomo and Rintaro).

Metropolis is a futuristic story of the ageless class struggle, not amongst humans, but between humans and the humanoid, set in a futuristic city at the height of its civilization. Spectacularly rendered in its visual style, it combines the best in Japanese animation with the latest in digital technology.

The original soundtrack is composed by Toshiyuki Honda and the music blends the New Orleans & Dixie style jazz with classical music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-10-01

This CD is perfect for any of those out there who loved the movie "Metropolis" like i did. The soundtrack is wonderful giving in to that '30s type jazzy feel that goes along with the whole private detective era and the fast techno type music to give it that futuristic feel. Great combination of both. This CD is a fantastic buy.

5 out of 5 stars For people who loved the movie and jazz fans alike.......2004-04-05

There are two different types of tracks in this CD: there are those that sound like a movie soundtrack (in other words, you might need to have seen the movie to get the picture), and there are tracks that are downright great jazz. I played this at my home, and my father was tapping his feet to the opening theme.

This jazz is not the "smooth jazz" you hear in book stores. This is the kind of jazz you can imagine played at night clubs during the 30's, with musicians gathering together to play simply for the sake of music. From the opening "Metropolis" to the whacky "El Bombero" and the drumming "Run" this is music you can simply enjoy. If you haven't seen the movie, but you like jazz or the blues, then by all means buy this CD. Except for "St. James Infirmary" this is all original music, and the people who worked on it are gods of music themselves.

Buy it, pop it in, listen, and let the music take you over.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL AND STRANGE.......2003-06-25

THis is a superb soundtrack for a neat movie. The movie is loosely based on the 1926 sci-fi Metropolis (but with less of a moral point) and is supposedly some kind of breakthrough in anime cartoons. The music is strange because it is all American - jazz, ragtime, etc, but done by Japanese musicans and very authentic. Cool as heck!

5 out of 5 stars like the JAZZ.......2003-06-02

I love the jazz its great i saw the movie in theaters 3 times and i have it and watched it like 4 times. its so like jazzY honda did a great job composing it. Ilove it.Its a masterpeice get it NOW!. p.s the movie yeah parents cautioned violince some things not mature for kids

4 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2002-05-17

This is a very nice album. I loved the music while watching the movie. I finally got it when I was in the CD store last night. I wish they could include "I can't stop loving you", and improve the recording a bit. Overall a very very nice album with mixed type of music.

I recommand it wholeheartly.

I am a big fan of all things French. Last year was quite a year for female singers in the Francophile world. Brisa Roche is the latest thing in this world. She is not so much like Keren Ann or Carla Bruni. Probably more like some British or Swedish artists. She is bilingual. The first song "Airplane" is just her voice and electric guitar. "Mystery Man" is more like stuff by Richard Hawley. Of course there are some more French songs on her like "Dans Le Vert De Sex Yeux." Songs like "Dial Me Up" are energetic rock and roll. This album has a lot of styles and sounds. Brisa Roche is not limited in any way. Her voice is very appeal, and more similar to Joanna Newsom, than other singer songwriters.

This CD is a delight. Including some well-known gems by Jolin and Gershwin, the disc also offers some lesser known corners of the ragtime canon, including two selections by modern rag composer (and winner of the 1997 Scott Joplin prize for the best new rag), Brian Dykstra. The selections are brilliantly played by Lester and the sound is excellent. A winner all around.

5 out of 5 stars A literal tour de force on a plastic disc!!.......2005-12-26

Lou Marini Jr. has had a long and illustrious career as a jazz, pop and R&B(in the terminology of yesteryear)sax and flute player. Lou has won prestigious recording industry awards for his session playing, and his excellent chops can be heard in a truly varied and masterful discography. If there is a virtuoso on these instruments, a true maestro, Lou is it. The real deal.

That this music is amazing taken either tune by tune OR when considered as a whole is truly remarkable. I listen to it frequently. The album is compelling. A friend who is a former New York ballet and modern dancer and choreographer remarked that she tried to listen to it as she did household chores but was forced to quit moving about and sit down and actively listen to it. She said, "it makes you listen to it"! That is a powerful statement from someone whose life and work revolve so much around jazz music.

Perhaps the most interesting and esoteric part of this musical equation is the fact that here you have a high-dollar New York session musician who decided to come down to Birmingham, Alabama to record his very musically and technically demanding Big Band Jazz record. Lou has done time with North Texas State's One O'Clock Jazz Band, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, was a featured soloist with the band on the Saturday Night Live TV show for its' first eight years, was a member of the Blues Brothers Band, appeared in the movies, tours regularly with James Taylor, and I am betting he did not make the decisions about where and how to record this album in a vacuum.

The fact is that the total package, Dr. Ray Reach's big band charts and pre-production and production expertise, the quality of the local players and the engineers and studio equipment and space, was not necessarily superior to what was available to him in New York City, but he was able to find, in Birmingham, Alabama, an enclave of dedicated professionals who were up to the task of playing this excellent material very very well in the studio, and the technique was there to capture the performances for posterity very desirably I might add.

Because due diligence was practiced in the pre-production and production processes, expensive studio time was economized and the whole record was recorded in just a few days with stalwart mixing and minimal "overdubbing" or re-recording. Lou made a wonderful Big Band Jazz record in Birmingham, Alabama on a basis that was favorable to him artistically and financially.

More people, I predict, will get on the bandwagon. As a chart writer or composer, player and producer, Ray reach is one of the most prolific, only one of a handful of elite musicians who are staying busy producing recordings. With his many years of both experience and education he is ideally suited to preside over this future wave of Birmingham Jazz.

Anybody that loves any kind of good music, big band or no, jazz or no, who does not get this and listen to it is doing themselves and these incredibly complicated and talented UBER-musicians a grave injustice. It just makes it a bit more delicious to know that Birmingham is producing world-class music and it happens every day. More is in the works from the Marini/Reach collaboration.

5 out of 5 stars A review of this recording, not of preconceived expectations.......2004-11-13

It seems that the previous reviewer wrote a review about what he incorrectly assumed the CD in question should have sounded like instead of what it really is. This is not a Blues Brothers CD, nor is it an hour of saxophone solos. It is instead an adventurous, cleverly crafted, and consistently interesting collection of tunes that go through many different permutations of the jazz idiom. There's some progressive fusion, Latin, funk, straight-ahead swing, and even some country! The arrangements are brilliant and moving, and the performances are superlative. There is truly something for every jazz fan (with the possible exception of those expecting this to be the next Blues Brothers album). Anybody listening to this with an open mind is sure to enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars Misled and terribly disappointed.......2004-07-21

I am a saxophonist and clarinetist who totally enjoyed the "Blue Lou Marini" solos on the Blues Brothers Albums for years. I will always be enthralled by his solos on Almost and Flip, Flop and Fly. I looked for an album that would feature and spotlight "Blue Lou". I thought an album entitled Lou's Blues would be a heavens sent. Instead, it was filled with amatuerish arrangements, and saxophone solos that only a mother could love. I would never have recognized that it was, in fact, Blue Lou. Horrible disappointment! Take my word for it, or, choose to listen to it and be appalled at the sub par product that was put out by Blue Lou.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Big Band Jazz CD.......2001-10-30

If you've never heard the Jim Widner Big Band before you may want to start with the very exciting live set, "Rides Again." However, lovers of modern big band jazz will enjoy this fine CD, as well. Widner's band only comes together for short tours and summer band camps, but most of the musicians are veterans of the Kenton, Herman, and Rich bands, so they gel very quickly into a group with both power and personality.

What we get on this CD are 6 standards and 4 original compostions, mostly straigthahead swingers or ballads, the one notable exception being Kim Richmond's complex and somewhat moody concert piece, "Continued Obscurity." Overall, the music on this CD is very enjoyable but the arrangements probably won't contain a lot of surprises for veteran jazz fans. Many of us, however, have probably not heard Body and Soul played at such a lively tempo. This is one of the outstanding tracks on the CD and features arranger/trombonist Conrad Herwig and trumpeter Clay Jenkins in excellent solos.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the CD is the exceptionally strong solo team Widner has put together. The CD's opening solo is a very melodic flute solo by Kim Park (who also solos on alto sax on "Slim Jim, dedicated to the bassist/leader). A few of the other strong soloists include veterans Bill Perkins and Bob Burgess, on tenor sax and trombone respectively (who share solo duties on "Embraceable You, another outstanding track); Kim Richmond on alto sax, Rick DiMuzio on tenor and Dave Scott on trumpet. Especially memorable is pianist Ray Kennedy who burns through "Yours is My Heart Alone" with runs that will remind you of none other than Oscar Peterson. Why isn't Kennedy more well-known in the jazz world? Drummer Gary Hobbs is outstanding throughout the whole CD.
This CD is warmly recommended to fans of modern big band jazz and once you get one Widner Big Band CD, you'll want then all.

    5 out of 5 stars A long time coming . . ........2004-06-13

I have enjoyed all of guitarist/vocalist Carl Verheyen's solo CDs, seen quite a few live performances and always wondered when we'd get an acoustic performance CD. Well, it's finally here! If you've never seen Carl play live you probably don't know that during many songs he'll often switch between acoustic and electric guitar - the acoustic sound is really an integral part of Carl's live performances. There are often instrumental acoustic "showcases" like the Kinks "Sunny Afternoon," Jerry Reed's "Mr. Lucky" or one of Carl's own compositions like the Chet Atkins inspired "Not Yet Chet." For soulful and melodic virtuoso guitar music that can be enjoyed by one and all and not just guitar geeks, it's hard to top Carl's "Solo Guitar Improvisations." One of my copies lives in the car plus it's my favorite CD to put on first thing Sunday moring while the coffee is brewing. I've given several CDs as gifts and everyone loves it.

    5 out of 5 stars No Borders.......2001-10-30

If you're a guitar player, you often read how some guy is "a top studio player" and you wonder "why?"--what is so special about this guy? But Carl Verheyen manages to be both distinctive and amazingly versatile at the same time.

Although this is mostly acoustic Carl's versatility reminded me of Brent Mason (another guy who really IS "tops")

There are some really beautiful things on this album especially some of Carl's older tunes, redone. Best of all, he does not sing on this one.

If you like this try and find his first album, No Borders, which really cooks.

4 out of 5 stars Guitarist Who Knows No Limits!.......2001-08-16

Verheyen is a true guitar virtuoso. His past experience includes performing with many jazz musicians such as Dave Grusin, Richard Elliott, Dan Siegel, Stanley Clarke and Max Roach. He has also played with the likes of Robben Ford and was the lead guitarist for Supertramp replacing guitarist Roger Hodgson in 1985.

Verheyen's latest release, Improvisations, is a fingerstyle, Jazz and Classical recording which goes beyond anything Verheyen has released to date. If anything, this CD shows that Verheyen is capable of playing all styles from Country to Funk to Shred and everthing in between including Classical and that his style does not fit neatly into anyone category.

The songs include the light acoustical jazz number "I Love You Porgy" to a rearranged "Sunday Afternoon" originally performed by the Kinks which is treated to an acoustic facelift to the jazzy "the Notch". The performance is excellent but rather laid back. Verheyen continues to impress listeners with his seemingly endless mastery of the guitar in all styles.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty and varied.......2001-07-30

Carl Verheyen, the top LA studio guitarist, usually focuses on blues/rock with his band. This, however, is a rare treat, an album that features just Carl playing acoustic arrangements of his own mixed with standards. The playing is outstanding, and the recording quality is excellent. Two of my favorites are "The Notch", which he says recalls a mountain pass in Western Massachusetts, and "Howdy Control", an upbeat and impressive country/rock piece. This is one of those albums that will please guitarists and everyday listeners, and just gets better the more you listen to it.
