What's surprising about this collection is not that they did it, but that it took them so long. Windham Hill records, and the label it swallowed, Private Music, wrote at least a chapter or two on chill-out music. But they've never targeted that audience before. This double CD draws from the usual Windham Hill-Private Music suspects and creates a seamless listening experience, ambient on disc one, acoustic on disc two. Disc One: Ambient features some of the pioneers of ambient music: Mark Isham, Tangerine Dream, and Patrick O'Hearn. But most of the disc draws from the melodic, bucolic, and orchestral side with State of Grace, David Arkenstone, and even Yanni. None of them are ambient by any stretch, but they do fall into an elegant flow that's more evocative than chilled. Disc Two: Acoustic has all the Windham Hill pioneers, including George Winston, Will Ackerman, Michael Hedges, and Philip Aaberg. Together, they create a pastoral flow from solo guitars to small chamber ensembles. I wouldn't bring this disc into a chill-out room, but for elegant atmospheres and pastoral moods, Windham Hill Chill has more than enough charms. --John Diliberto

The Wonderful, Magical Unicorn Should Not Have its Horn Used.......2003-05-20
As a horse-shoe ringer-spike. I mean all of these musicians, are well-accomplished artists and have performed for many-many fans. Yes, I was leary about that 3-star rating and Windham Hill's compilations are mostly masterpieces. It's a Great Deal and a Super Listen both magical and thunderous, delicate and sweeping and highly thought-provoking. This music sounds nice with a portable; but will really make your home stereo come alive. This music is 10 stars. All pieces are flawless,(personally)I like playing disk #2 first---Ave Maria is one of my favs. So don't delay. Buy this masterpiece today! It's great!
An OK-sounding album, but very little new or interesting.......2003-01-09
This is really more just a label sampler than a successful "chill" compilation. Windham Hill has put out many excellent collections in the past, most notably the underrated and genre-setting "Path" CD. That was a CD with many new tracks and new artists. It really opened my mind up to some great music. This new "chill" set does a very poor job of backing up the boast from the album's subtitle - "30 essential tracks from the original chill out label."
Start with disc one, the "ambient" disc. So many of the cuts are from previous albums - even from previous W.H. collections! Often this is the 3rd or even 4th compilation appearance for some tunes! Windham Hill is getting like Higher Octave, endlessly re-packaging the same songs over and over. Some of these cuts are not even "ambient." The Ravi Shankar theme is nice enough, but isn't "chill" OR "ambient." It clashes with the other songs on disc one. The piece from Yanni is like watered-down Vangelis. Of course he is from the Tesh school of muzak and doesn't really belong on any compilation looking for credibility anyhow.
The 2nd disc, "acoustic," has some excellent themes from Nightnoise, Will Ackerman, and others. Again, though, many of the songs have been anthologized to death already. If you own just about ANY W.H. compilation, you've probably already got "Rickover's Dream" from Michael Hedges and "Wedding Rain" from Liz Story. Instead of putting out the same music again, it would be much better if Windham Hill would come up with something new for a change.

Amazon.com essential recording
One of his finest '90s recordings, Chill Out balances the guitar-glitz of Carlos Santana's guest shot on the karmic title cut with a handful of profoundly deep Hooker solo performances. Among those are new versions of his standards "Tupelo" and "Annie Mae," and the soulful "If You've Never Been in Love," where expert slide-man Roy Rogers provides subtle accompaniment to Hooker's spontaneous storytelling. The band numbers that bookend the album are weak, relying on Hooker's strong vocal presence to overcome sketchy writing. Van Morrison, pianist Charles Brown, and M.G.'s leader Booker T. Jones also lend a hand. But Hooker doesn't need anybody's help to get to the passionate heart of his blues. One last note: Anton Corbijn's CD-booklet photographs of ol' Johnny Lee are terrific. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
Chill Out.......2001-11-07
This is a very good album from one of the greatest men in all of music history, John Lee Hooker. This album has a mellow mood to it that makes it perfect to listen too when you want to Chill Out. The title track, is a collaboration with Carlos Santana, a long-time fan of JLH. That song is a classic and was the reason I bought the album in the first place. Other stand out songs here are KIDDIO, ANNIE MAE, TOO YOUNG, ONE BOURBON ONE SCOTCH ONE BEER, and MEDLEY: SERVES ME RIGHT TO SUFFER/SYNDICATOR. Many songs here are updated classics that will sound fresh to new fans. I think that some of the songs on this album where it is JLH and his guitar are without a doubt, the songs that we are able to see how great his talent really voice. He had that perfect voice for his storytelling type of blues music that kept the listener hooked.
Hooker's best contemporary blues recording.......2001-06-22
CHILL OUT was Hooker's fourth album since his triumphant comeback began in 1989 with THE HEALER. CHILL OUT also won a Grammy in 1995 for the Best Traditional Blues Album. The title track features long time supporter Carlos Santana and his band. Van Morrison further cements their long-standing friendship with a duet on" Medley: Serves Me Right To Suffer/Syndicator." Charles Brown and his band join in on "Kiddio" and "Annie Mae." Unlike some blues CDs filled with guest performers, the guests on this CD do not dominate the songs. John Lee certainly is the front man. In fact, of all the Hooker albums I have heard, and there are hundreds, I would have to say the best display of his vocal talents of all his contemporary recordings.
I had the privilege of seeing Hooker two years before his death during his last performance on the East Coast. The CD's last track is slower blues ballad; "We'll Meet Again." If there is blues in heaven, hopefully we will indeed, meet again.
Take Your Shoes off and Sit a Spell.......2000-08-10
Though true JLH fans probably have found some of his earlier CDs to be a better reflection of his talents, this is a fun blues CD for those who are just getting into Blues. After just a few plays, you'll be humming "Kiddio" as if you've known it for years. Hooker's rendition of "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" is more likely to get you doing "air-band" than George Thorogood's version. Finally, the title cut ("Chill Out") is a great piece that should have received substantially greater attention. Much of the CD is just Hooker's voice, a guitar and a tapping shoe, with an occassional piano thrown in, but a few cuts have a bit more. Don't let that scare you... this is a good buy.
Get the early stuff!.......2000-04-24
There's nice stuff here, but most of these songs are retreads of numbers he's done much better on superior albums much earlier in his career. DO NOT MAKE ANY HOOKER RELEASED AFTER 1980 YOUR FIRST PURCHASE (or second, or third, or fourth, or fifth, or..) Earlier Hooker is much, much better. Trust me.
You heard the man--Chill Out!.......2000-02-20
Even though John Lee Hooker does not need any help when he talks the blues, he brought in some excellent backup: Santana, Booker T., and Van Morrison, which alone should pique your interests to at least take a listen to this disc, if not buy it outright. Overall, the disc has a fairly mellow/slow feel to it with tracks like "Too Young" and "We'll Meet Again"; however it does pick up a bit with "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and "Kiddio."
If you need a relaxing, laid back, excellent blues CD to add to your collection, I highly recommend you make room for this one in your library. You won't be disappointed.

WOW WOW WOW.......2006-07-15
This guy makes John Mayer look like a hack. And I love Mayer. Jak is my new favorite singer-songwriter,though. Sorry, John. Get this CD. You'll love it. You'll wear it out. I did.
Amazing! Great guy too!.......2005-04-07
I just heard Christopher Jak for the first time when he came to my college the other night, and i was happily surprised with his beautiful voice and great new songs. comeon, how cute is it to hear a guy singing about his dog? (check out "i dont know what you're thinking" (nevermind that the same song was used for a romantic scene in a movie, haha)plus, he was the nicest guy! it was a very small venue, so he gladly chatted with everyone who wanted to say meet him, and let me buy his CD for half price when i told him i only had a $5 on me. in conclusion, awesome sound, awesome guy, check him out!
Great new Artist!.......2005-03-06
Christopher Jak's Album "Applause of the Rain" is simply fantastic! He has a smooth melodic voice coupled with great rifts and varied tempos you find yourself listening to this album over and over. I found myself almost internalizing it if you will - finding myself humming it in the middle of different moments of the day. Think Bebo Norman meets John Mayer and that's kind of how you might describe him. Enjoy!
A Suprise........2004-11-07
I stumbled on to Christopher Jak completely by accident. He opened for a Vanessa Carlton concert I went to recently, and all I can say is wow. He really surprised me; originally I thought "Oh great, another Mayer wannabe," but he turned out to be so much more. His CD is excellent and he really has talent, unlike most of today's musical artists. Definitely give it a try.
The Real Deal!.......2004-10-12
Jak Christopher is a star in the making. His songs are well crafted, melodic, and incredibly catchy. Treat yourself and buy this album now. You won't regret it.

Album Description
Windblown Kiss is the first full-length album by Lovespirals, the beautiful, and beautifully surprising collaboration of RYAN LUM (the driving force behind legendary Love Spirals Downwards ) and new collaborative singer/songwriter Anji Bee.
Reknown multi-instrumentalist Lum once again creates musical landscapes of breathtaking beauty - and with vocal styles ranging from ethereal to earthy, sweet to sensual, Bee shows off her remarkable vocal range, and allows the full force of her voice to soar into the sublime.
Drawing inspiration from Flamenco, Bebop, soul, folk and the stacks of early vinyl they each grew up loving, Lovespirals has created a timeless world of romance and intrigue. Leaving behind the conventional restraints of dance-floor tracks, this latest endeavor is at once a dreamscape of nostalgia, and a kiss blown to the future.
Using half a dozen different guitars, and featuring the extraordinary talents of Doron Orenstein (of Frescoe ) on saxophones, and Sean Bowley (of Eden) on acoustic guitar and vocals, Windblown Kiss is a celebration of creative anachronism: the past and the future negotiate a gorgeous balance.
Customer Reviews:
Can't get enough of this great album........2004-06-19
I bought this CD over a month ago and just can't get enough of it. I'm reading these reviews now, and I think it deserves a higher rating than it's got. Well, I keep returning over and over to everything that Love Spirals Downwards has recorded, especially songs like City Moon and Sunset Bell from Flux and Noumena of Spirit and This Endris Night from Idylls, Madras, Will You Fade, etc. But this is fast becoming one of my favorite cds of all time. There are so many great things about this album. Anji Bee is just divine. Her vocals and harmonies soar into that perfect harmonious space that great singers know how to hit. What a great remake of America's You Girl. I listened to this song on repeat for about 8 hours over two days on my trip through Arizona and Utah. Her backing vocals at the end are just delicious. Same for how her backing vocal comes in with the lines "toda se pasa" on Dejame or "his voice is like a song..." on He Calls Me. The Spanish lines flow so nicely in Dejame- "y los suenos, suenos son." Oh man, more people should buy this CD. I can't get enough of the gorgeous and intricate saxophone melodies in the 3 songs that feature Doron Orenstein. It inspires me to get more sax cds now. Ryan Lum's guitar work is great as usual, but this album is so varied, with all the different styles. I love the solo on Windblown Kiss and his mood setting picking on Swollen Sea. Anji Bee sings just off key at times to also add to the atmosphere of Swollen Sea- "will you return here, engulfed by a bleak fear..." I drove through a Death Valley sunset listening to this great song. Then comes the last track, which is currently my favorite track. I just love the way the sax repeats his line about two minutes into the song and then she repeats "no I, no I can't see you..." It's just brilliant, and one of many brilliant moments on this album. If these songs are a sincere expression of their love for each other, then I feel it. You guys are great- I so much look forward to your next CD!
Um....not what I expected, and to be honest it was not good.......2003-05-23
After reading these other reviews, I was psyched to get this album and give it a listen. I loved Love Spirals Downwards, and figured it is basically them anyhow so it should rock. Well, from the first song on I forced myself not to turn of the disc player! It is a totally different vibe then LSD, so if you are expecting anything like the other LSD albums it is not. The vocals are similar for the women, but a guy sings now, if you can call it that. It had 1 or 2 songs that were OK at best, but it was not worth the price I payed. I would return it in a heartbeat if I could. This sounds harsh, but so does the album.
Lovespirals need a new audience.......2002-10-08
"Windblown Kiss" is obviously misunderstood by many Projekt Records fans. Clearly, this album was not recorded with them in mind. None -- or at least, few -- of the typical ethereal music cliches are present in the songwriting of this new Lovespirals release. While there is certainly an ethereal mood to many of the songs, there is never an abundance of quote-unquote ethereal style going on. Lovespirals compose songs, not ambient passages, with clearly defined verses, choruses, bridges, solos -- the whole nine yards. Not content to stick to simple mood pieces, they offer fine musicianship and variety in the sound and song structures of this unconventional offering. There's no easy pigeonhole for Lovespirals' music to fit into, least of all darkwave, gothic, ambient, or ethereal. Jazz is really not an apt description either, as jazz is merely one element of their songwriting. Folk is certainly also present, rock, even a bit of world music. This album doesn't cater to any one class of music genres, which makes it very refreshing to some folks, and fairly difficult for others. The fact that it doesn't live up to someone's idea of what a Projekt record -- or a Love Spirals Downwards record -- should sound like does not make it a "bad" record. This record needs to be discovered by a much broader range of music listeners to be truly appreciated for what it is; an extraordinarly brave new blend of musical genres, taking the most profound and beautiful essense of each, and wedding them in blissful harmony.
[Bad].......2002-09-25
i heard this band at projektfest and thought the music sounded cool enough so i bought the cd....got it home and didn't enjoy it...
Sultry and Sweet.......2002-09-14
Let me start off by saying that Lovespiralsdownward has been one of my favorite bands for over 10 years. Suzanne Perry's delay laden, processed vocals were wonderful. Now with that said, Windblown Kiss is not a Lovespiralsdownward album. IT'S BETTER!
What we lost with the departure Suzanne Perry, we gained in the sweet voiced Anji Bee, who really shows off her talent with some sultry Jazz vocals. As for Ryan Lum, he's still creating great music. Windblown Kiss is more eclectic than some of his recent work, and reminds me more of his first album Idylls. The tracks I like most on Windblown Kiss are "I can't see you", and the America cover "You Girl". I can't really compare Lovespirals to another artist, but I will tell you that after listening to this album I had a strong craving to listen to artist like Peggy Lee, Nina Simone, Chris Isaak, Leonard Cohen, Cocteau Twins, and Tricky.

Album Description
Joining the dots between the digital and anologue 'Acoustic Chill' offers a much-needed alternative to the perma-frost of chill out albums currently filling the racks. Compiled by Chris Coco, one of the scene's most respected DJs and artists, the album offers tracks from the most exciting artists on both sides of the electronic/acoustic divide. Featuring tracks from Blue State and Turin Breaks together with Royksopp's sublime remix of Kings Of Convenience's 'I Don't Know What I Can Save You From', 'Acoustic Chill' is the sound of a new generation of musical pioneers. 29 tracks in all. Sony. 2002.

not your average chill cd...........2002-04-12
What a great compilation! The CD features 30 or so UK artists, such as Kings of Convenience, Ed Harcourt, and Kathryn Williams. I had not heard of any of these artists before, and now search high and low for their individual cd's. Some songs are mellow dance-y, some are indie, some r&b-ish, some singer/songwriter-y. It's just a real nice mix of stuff, that flows beautifully from one track to the next.
My particular favorites on Acoustic Chill would include: Beautiful Crazy/The Space Raiders (r&b-ish with a nice smokey guitar riff), Always Your Way/My Vitriol (very indie, live sound), and most especially-Evening Sun by Gemma Hayes-a sweet little track-acoustic guitar and acoustic bass-sounds live. It's such a simple song with awesome lyrics.
Buy this CD. Turn off the TV and chill...
