Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Blend!.......2006-12-31

I've enjoyed the techno/trace/rave scene for many years now, and am familiar with a variety of artists and styles. Since none of the songs listed for this track are available to be sampled via Amazon, I took a gamble buying this somewhat pricey CD. Wow! I am glad that I made this move.

First, let me get it out of the way that this is NOT a CD for those seeking absolute, "pure", happy hardcore. Instead, Trance Rave's "Happy Hardcore Best" brings listeners a fantastic mix of solid happy hardcore tunes and rich remixes of many classic songs. Second, the CD is made in Japan, so your computer may not read the track names (or CD name) if you do not have a Japanese character set installed on your machine. This isn't of worry, though, all of the songs play just fine, and it's easy to simply edit the track names on your computer so that they read properly if you don't have the character set. That emphasized, I doubt anyone into electronica would be disappointed with this CD. There's truly something on this disc for everyone.

Individual tracks... (using a 1 to 5 rating, 5 = awesome! listen to it again and again; 1 = makes my ears bleed in agony).

Vinylgroover's "Let it Be (My Guardian Angel)" easily hits a 5. This track kicks off the CD with pep and style, featuring lyrics taken from a classic Beatles song. I'd not say this is a remix of the Beatle's classic work by any measure; Vinylgroover seems to have captured a whole new essence here, one that I find terrific. (5 out of 5)

"Vol. 3" by BNH starts off with a quiet and almost mystical sound, before the echoing lyrics quickly blend with fast beats as the track rapidly gains momentum. This is one of the quicker works featured on this CD, and is another hit. On almost any other CD, I'd rank this track a 5, but there are so many excellent selections on "Happy Hardcore Best" that I feel "Vol. 3" scores a 4. (4 out of 5)

Shadow K continues "Happy Hardcore Best" with "Way of the Wind". This track seems more somber compared to some of the others here, but is nonetheless another terrific piece. This is one of the several tracks on the CD that feature few, if any, vocals and has something of a trance feel to it. (4 out of 5)

Take Pachelbel's Canon and transform it into happy hardcore and you get DJ Angel's (with DJ Chucky?) "Flowrish." Since I enjoy classical music, I find "Flowrish" delightful. Thankfully the artists here were able to keep much of Canon's simple elegance in the "Happy Hardcore Best" rendition. With the piano in this track, I think "Flowrish" will appeal to those who like the older happy hardcore style, as well. (4 out of 5)

DJ Sharpnel brings "30 Min Harder" to this CD. "30 Min Harder" boasts an enchanting vocalist whose melodic voice conjures forth from a fast-paced beat. This is one of the songs on the disc that really makes me move and is the start to a solid battery of tracks on the disc. (4 out of 5)

D-Frag's "The Wizard" is one of the best tracks on the album. Lacking much for vocals, the track seems a little more hardcore than some of the others here. "The Wizard" is also something special, to me, as it seems to expertly synthesize sounds from a variety of happy hardcore artists (e.g. I hear some sounds reminiscent of DJ Brownout's work - no prizes for figuring out who influenced who, of course). In any case, this is a true happy hardcore track worthy of hearing. (5 out of 5)

"Ray of Light" by Select is another top track. Combining a deep, rich piano with superior vocals casts "Ray of Light" as one of the best tracks on the CD. The lyrics featured are crisp, clear, and meaningful - uplifting as happy hardcore ought to be. Enjoy it. (5 out of 5)

Seeing the "Bridge Over Troubled Water" track on this CD made me think of those Anne Murray cassette commercials from the early 90's. Either way, E-Logic's & DNA's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" holds little in common with slower songs sharing the title; fast and with a unique sound, this is one of the more unusual tracks found on "Happy Hardcore Best". Frankly, I'm mixed on how much I like this track. Some of the sound reminds me of Blue Man Group's "Hamster Dance". (3 out of 5)

DJ Jo-Keng's "Illusion" is a dramatic transition from the previous track and is another best on the CD. Superb, moving of body, mind, and spirit - "Illusion" has become one of my all time favorite songs, ever. Lacking vocals, the piece transforms piano notes and synths into something otherworldly all while maintaining a quick tempo. (5 out of 5)

"The Hardcore Fever Remixes" (DJ Energy) is a good follow-up to "Illusion"; DJ Energy's work is upbeat and quick with saccharine lyrics so distinctive of the happy hardcore genre. (4 out of 5)

Sound Assassin's "You Got Me" reminds me of some selections from DJ Icey's CD's, yet "You Got Me" is just so short a track (1:30) on this CD that it disappoints me some. This track has such quick, no-nonsense momentum to it that I wish it'd play for at least double the time. Ah well, all can't be perfect. (3 out of 5)

"Tokyo Raver" (DJ Champ, DJ Zet, Inful-8) is a buffet for the ears, the track transitioning frequently and with little warning. The unique sounds featured in this track make it a good one. For comparison, this track along with "The Wizard" have sounds similar to some of the tracks in mixes I hear currently (December 2006) on the happy hardcore internet radio stations. Good stuff. (4 out of 5)

Vinylgroover boasts a second track on this CD, a remix of "Time After Time". Much of the song's original lyrics are preserved, and this track will be appealing to 80's fans. Personally, the track is a little repetitious to me, but it's nonetheless quality. (3 out of 5)

"The Key", by Dougal and Mickey Skeedale, kicks off with echoing vocals and a building beat that takes off into a happy neverland. This track is one of the most fast-paced on the CD and is a winner. (4 out of 5)

Finally, the CD concludes with DJ Kawasaki's "Maria". Taking lyrics from the Blondie song of the same name, DJ Kawasaki's rendition is a fine conclusion to "Happy Hardcore Best" and maintains a fast pace until the end. My only quibble with the track is it's long closing - having almost 30 seconds of just drums at the very end, though this might be of interest to those who prefer to mix their own CDs. It's a good track. (4 out of 5).

Now, looking over my ratings here, you might think the CD is more a "4 out of 5" stars. No. In truth, all of the tracks on this CD are superior and joys to hear. This CD offers something for all techno/trance/rave listeners: there are songs that are great just to kick back and listen to, others that have a delightful trance feel, and yet more that make you want to dance. This is a good buy for a CD and comes with my recommendation. "Happy Hardcore Best" is a treat to listen to and groove to.
