3 out of 5 stars Don't Start Here to Understand the Evolution of Lenny Bruce.......2007-07-17

The Berkeley Concert, complete and unabridged, provides insight into the brilliance of Lenny Bruce. Please understand that this concert took place less than a year before Lenny died, and most of the material is NOT funny. What the listener gets is a diatribe by a man so beaten down by the legal system, that he waxes on about the hypocrisy of the legal system. It is laughable and absurd to realize that Lenny was busted for language that is so tame by today's standards. Regular cable stations, such as FX, expose viewers to objectionable language that it is almost surreal to imagine that Lenny's transgressions took place a little over 40 years ago! This not to excuse the fact that Lenny was a drug addict, and this too, led to his demise.

Now, on to the CD: As I stated previously, the first half, Lenny is self indulgent about the law. Then, toward the latter part of the concert he returns to his time-tested comedy: the horniness of men, race issues, Catholicism, Judaism, women (he always mentions women), and the laughs emerge. Interestingly, he mentions Bela Lugosi's drug habit. Was he "projecting" here? Despite being a complete concert, the ending is rather abrupt.

If you want to explore Lenny Bruce, do not begin with this CD, but listen to his work chronologically. What you will witness with the Berkeley Concert,is the deterioration of a brilliant mind. It has been said many times before: There would be no Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Lewis Black, Chris Rock, et.al, if Lenny Bruce had not paved the way.

3 out of 5 stars Lenny Bruce is not afraid!.......2005-01-13

Until last month, I had no clue who Lenny Bruce was. I remember his name from a R.E.M song, but that was it. Then, last month, I had the chance to see Dustin Hoffman portray him in the film Lenny and I was hooked. I wanted to get my hands around as much of this cultural icon as possible, so to start my journey I bought this album. Maybe it was the wrong place to start, or that Hoffman created a better character than he was, but Lenny didn't make me laugh. His jokes in this concert are dated and longwinded (I know that was his style, but without the visual it just didn't work). While there are some bits that had me thinking of the parallels between this time and his era, most of the 78 minutes were left listening to his ramblings that never really went anywhere. I think to fully appreciate Bruce, you needed to be a liberal living in that generation. He was truly speaking to them about their lives, and I think that is why the translation is not as good today. I would recommend seeing the film Lenny, but skipping this album. It isn't his best.

      Album Description

Robert Ackerman is a rarity among musicians in our day and age: more than a performer who composes or a composer who performs, he transcends musical genres and styles, not only in his compositions, but performs all styles of music on four instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone and piano). As if this were not enough, Ackerman has made a life of the study of acoustics and instrument design and has shared this information with generations of students not only as a public school music teacher, but also as an international lecturer and published author. His compositions have received Ford Foundation and National Endowment grants; he has performed with Steve Reich and Philip Glass; his big band charts and jazz tunes have found their way into the repertoire of some of the most influential jazz players of his age; and he has performed at most of the important jazz festivals the world over. Robert Ackerman was born in Irvington, New Jersey in 1940. His music studies began in New York City with Joe Soldo (Bell Telephone Hour) and the legendary Joe Allard (Juilliard School of Music) continuing with master teachers such as Thomas Nyfenger (Yale University), Keith Underwood, Eddie Saulkin, Harvey Boatright (Dallas Symphony), and Bob Morris (New York Philharmonic). Ackerman received degrees from Montclair State University and Columbia University in New York. After spending the 1960s in the New York concert music scene, Ackerman left for Europe and entrenched himself in the jazz scenes of Italy, Switzerland, France and Sweden, only to return to the States in 1985. This recording marks the first commercially available representation of his concert music.

That's really all there is to say about the Y100 Sonic Sessions line of CDs... but good luck finding this or any of them, because they go on sale for a short time right before Christmas and after that, it's extremely tough to pick them up. Anyway, solid acoustic performances on this disc, and I highly recommend picking up a copy if you can find it. Don't listen to the first reviewer, he obviously doesn't listen to the radio station nor understand what the CDs are all about.

In 1979, the Duplex Planet began as a magazine published by graphic artist David Greenberger chronicling the lives and writings of residents at the Duplex Nursing Home near Boston. On this charming double CD, Greenberger reads various excerpts to a live audience while Terry Adams (of NRBQ) leads a small jazz band. The music, an engaging blend of Sun Ra's big band style and Carla Bley's dinner music, serves as interlude to the written material, which takes up the brunt of the recording. This is, by and large, a spoken-word CD. Greenberger's choice of material and delivery indicate great affection and respect for the residents, who respond to a range of questions, from their opinions about the Beatles ("Oh, yes. They chirp and play around.") to why people kiss ("Because it's easy. The same reason people give the finger. Because it's easy."). Of particular interest to music fans is "Ken's Corner": funny, enthusiastic responses to a wide range of music from Ken Eglin, tap dancer from the '30s and true music lover. --Wally Shoup

        4 out of 5 stars Duplex Nation.......2005-11-21

This CD feels like being at a live recording of a radio show. Better than Lake Wobegon though. There are about a half dozen other CDs from Greenberger, my favorite might be Mayor of The Tennessee River but the newest one, Whispers, etc. has one of the saddest pieces ever - it is so great. Also a good website for more of his stuff (including those elusive Brookings compilations) [...]

5 out of 5 stars Looking for more?.......2004-09-18

If you appreciate this disc, you may want to check out the "Lyrics By Ernest Noyes Brookings" series (only one of which is on Amazon: Lyrics by Ernest Noyes Brookings Vol 4: Outstandingly Ignited"). The CDs in the series consist of various musical artists setting the poetry of this longtime resident and Duplex Planet contributer to music. The music is presented in many styles (mostly rock/pop) by a broad range of independent artists, some of which you may be familiar with. Some songs/bands work better than others, with results that vary from funny to frightening. Yo La Tengo fans will be interested to know that the band contributes "Artificial Heart", a hard-driving song they sometimes play in their live shows, to one volume.

5 out of 5 stars Complex Duplex Planet.......2002-06-17

I was painting the ceiling when I put this CD on and I had to stop because I was laughing so hard and little droplets of paint were going all over me. David Greenberger asks all the right questions, and the answers the residents give back to him are all pearls. Everyone should buy this album, and then they should find some older person and ask them the same stuff.
