There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

4 out of 5 stars It's Beach Movie Tunes!.......2007-07-23

And that says it all.

If you've ever watched one of those old, goofy beach movies from the 1960's, you know what to expect. Corny Jokes, stock footage of surfing, an odd juxtaposition of conservative sexual mores and jiggling teen flesh... and music!

Perhaps what most defined these cornball masterpieces was not the goofy grins, and boy/girl dilemmas, but the music. The surf rock scene had come into it's own and had finally found an outlet to the mainstream. This CD showcases the best from those AIP films. From the well known (Dick Dale, Jan & Dean, The Beach Boys, Nanacy Sinatra) to the unknown (The Pyramids, The Exciters) to shoulda been better known (Donna Loren, The Astronauts). All are given a fair share of the spotlight on this disc.

This CD is fun, especially if you're a fan of surf music and even more so if you have a sweet spot for those hokey beach party films of old.

5 out of 5 stars Beach Music Bingo.......2006-11-05

If you are a fan of the Beach movies from the 60's, then you can not afford to miss this wonderful cd featuring Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Dick Dale, Donna Loren, Nancy Sinatra and many more. There is a good diverse sampling of songs from these movies. This is DEFINITELY beach music at its best!
If you remember characters with names such as Frankie, Dee Dee, Big Drag, Eric Von Zipper, Candy and Deadhead, you are NOT going to want to miss this cd.
I will admit that there are some good songs missing from this cd. But if you buy THE VERY BEST OF DONNA LOREN on cd as a companion piece to this one, you will have most of the best music from the AIP Beach movies.
What are you waiting for? Buy this cd before Eric Von Zipper comes over and hits you with the Himalayan suspenders trick.

2 out of 5 stars Well inentioned but narrow, weak collection of an intriguing genre.......2006-08-14

While the prior reviews are well written and helpful, they contain some errors that any potential buyer of this CD should be aware of.

First, there is much, much more to the musical legacy of the "Beach Party genre" than small number of pieces in this collection. The majority of the material contained on this CD is from the seven American International Pictures (AIP) productions made between August 1963 and April 1966 (Beach Party, Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Pajama Party, Beach Blanket Bingo, How To Stuff A Wild Bikini and The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini). However, during that period over two dozen "clones" of these films were made by competing studios, many containing music that in terms of quality far exceeded the AIP productions (not all studios treated their musical interludes as "ephemera.")

Secondly, there were indeed numerous full original soundtrack albums released back in the 1960s for many of these films, some of the better ones including Wild On The Beach (released by RCA in 1964), Surf Party (by MGM in 1964), Get Yourself a College Girl (also by MGM in 1964), A Swingin' Summer (by Hanna Barbera Records in 1965), Out of Sight (by Decca in 1966) and Wild, Wild Winter (also by Decca in 1966). Among the artists who appeared in those films and whose numbers are on the soundtrack LPS -- and whose pieces are not included on the Varese CD collection -- are Sonny and Cher, the Righteous Brothers, The Dave Clark Five, The Animals, The Turtles, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Freddie and the Dreamers, Lesley Gore and Dick and Dee Dee.

Third, not everything on this CD is "available for the first time." The Dick Dale number was released as a single by Capitol in late 1963. The film cast rendition of "Bikini Beach" and the Exciter's "Gotcha You Where I Want You" are both on Candy Johnson's 1964 "Bikini Beach" Canjo LP. The "wide stereo" version of Annette's title piece for "Pajama Party" is identical to the one released on the Buena Vista stereo version of "Annette's Pajama Party" LP forty-two years ago.

And fourth, neither Jan and Dean nor the Astronauts ever appeared in or were involved in any way with the AIP productions. Their pieces on this CD are from Beach Party clones (Columbia's 1963 and 1964 productions of "Surf Party" and "Ride The Wild Surf").

Those observations aside, what are the high and low points of what you get in the Varese collection?

Well, to put it bluntly a handful of treasures (as previously observed, the original film version of Loren's "It Only Hurts When I Cry" from Beach Blanket Bingo, as well as the second Pyramids number from Bikini Beach and the Beach Boys title number from the Universal clone "Girls On The Beach") mixed in with a lot of throw-away filler: everything from Muscle Beach Party (the weakest musically of any of the seven AIP films), Avalon's two forgettable numbers from Beach Party and the title piece from Dr. Goldfoot & The Bikini Machine being among the most notable wastes of space on this CD.

Unfortunately, the producers of this album seem to have had a limited appreciation of the range of music in the Beach party genre, for they focused on trying to cover almost every AIP film (irrespective of music quality) to the exclusion of all the other great pop in the contemporary clones. In addition, they -- for unknown reasons -- skipped over some of the best material in the AIP movies. Specifically, here are the "crown jewels" of the Beach Party genre that should be included in any good collection:

- Annette's classic pop love ballads from the AIP series. Specifically, "Treat Him Nicely" and "Promise Me Anything" from Beach Party, and her duet with Tommy Kirk in "There has to Be A Reason" from Pajama Party. For good measure, I'd also throw in "The Perfect Boy," Annette's upbeat moral ballad from "How To Stuff A Wild Bikini" (That song arguably being the best piece she did in the entire series).

- The Righteous Brother's screaming performance of "Justine" from A Swingin' Summer (why the rather bland Rip Chords number from this film was included by Varese is beyond me!)

- Dick and Dee's wonderful piece ("Heartbeats") from Wild, Wild Winter. The Jay and the Americans performance of "Two Of A Kind" at the end of the film also warrants a mention. Frankly, the soundtrack of this film is so good (probably the best of any Beach Party clone) I'd also include the orchestrated main title piece as well as the pounding, wall-of-soundish number (amusingly titled "Our Loves' Gonna Snowball") performed by the somewhat obscure -- but still glorious -- Jackie and Gayle duo on the beach early in the film.

- The tough version of "Round and Round" performed by the Animals at the end of Get Yourself a College Girl. Despite the silly scipt, Eric Burdon manages to grimace through this whole number in his classic swarmy form.

- The bouncy "Never Comin' Back" from Surf Party (a fantastic "were finally at the beach" number) sung by Jackie DeShannon, Patricia Morrow and Lory Patrick.

- Little Richard -- in his textbook out-of-control form -- pounding out "Scuba Party" early on in Catalina Caper, a 1967 production that was the last curtain call for the genre, the final movie that most film historians categorize as falling into the "Beach Party" category.

- And for good measure, the strange mix of The Supremes and the beach, in the form of "Beach Ball," the pulsing title piece they perform live in the 1964 Paramount film of the same name.

Ah, a collection containing these numbers would not only transport one back to the mid 60s - it would dramatically raise your appreciation of the Hollywood pop legacy of that period!

5 out of 5 stars What You Need To Know.......2006-07-07

Just in time for the summer season is the first release ever to collect songs from the beloved beach party films of the '60s. The core "Beach Party" films featured Frankie Avalon and Annette singing and acting, along with some of the biggest recording artists of the day (The Beach Boys, Dick Dale, The Kingsmen, Jan & Dean, Nancy Sinatra, Donna Loren), yet there never was any official soundtrack albums issued for the films. These musical numbers made the "Beach Party" films the full-length music videos of their day. Six songs are appearing for the first time anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Give Drew's a Break!.......2006-07-05

Ok, I have to preface this by saying that Drew's gets a bad rap around here because of idiots that are too stupid to know that "Wah! It's not the original artists! :-( "

No, Drew's aren't the original artists...do a little research before you buy & you'd know that.

But this CD is actually a good mix of songs with some decent singers.

Hey, pay a buck for each song & download the songs on this CD if you want the original artists...you'll have a GREAT CD then.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely the lowest.......2002-08-02

If there was a negative star rating I would use it. It doesn't even deserve a star. I thought the CD was filled with songs by the original signers. Nope - these signers would immediately get the "boot" in the American Idol contest in less than two seconds. I wish I could get my money back on this purchase but no luck.

1 out of 5 stars ... Awful.......2000-10-19

This CD was absolutly PAINFUL. Beware future buyers this cd is full of singer wannabe's who have no business singing in the shower let alone on a recorded cd!

1 out of 5 stars not by the original artists, bad bad covers!!!.......1999-08-17

this cd is a collection of covers by karaoke singers, something that isnt mentioned in the description. the singers are mediocre, don't buy this.

This is indeed a couple of great discs. Masterbeat once again delivers what we have become accostumed to. From the opening track of CD 1 to the closinf track of CD 2, it is one great track after another. This is going to be one of the hottest discs of the summer. The mixing is flawless, and so is the selection of songs. Some will defenitly become club classics.
So lather up, press play and enjoy yourself...

5 out of 5 stars THE party disc of the SUMMER!.......2005-07-14

Blue Water opens the disc, and is definitely one of those hi nrg funk vocal house tracks that makes you feel like you should be dancing in the bright sunlight. The track reminds me of something Kylie Minogue would record. It's followed immediately by a much darker track, Peter Rauhofer's elusive mix of How Would U Feel, coming in at a good seven minutes long. Jill Scott offers diva vocal, Robbie Rivera's club hit is a blend of house music with an alternative rock vocal edge-great track. From there, it's a string of peak hour diva anthems that pack a punch, including RuPaul taking on a house classic in an incredible hard dub. And disc 2 is virtually flawless, with one peak hour diva anthem after another. Track times are:

        2 out of 5 stars What's happened to Debbie?.......2005-04-15

I am not a staunch Gibson fan like most of the drooling 5-star reviews here. But I loved her in the 80's and think her to be a talented singer-songwriter who puts modern pop moppets to shame. I thought it was awesome when she broke into Broadway and made a steady career of it.
        Then I heard 'Colored Lights'.
I ask, Debbie!(sorry, DEBORAH), what has happened to you??
Like others here, I applaud her choice to include lesser-known songs. But in doing so, it really behoves her to SELL them as great songs, not rework them for her own interpretation. I felt like I was listening not to the pure-toned, crystal voice of our favourite teen idol, but someone doing a bad impersonation of her. There is hardly a single line she sings which isn't punctured by bad ennunciation, poor phrasing or a lack of respect for the intent of the composers.
There were no gravelly growls(meant to sound sexy, no doubt, but too overdone to succeed), breathy sighs, uneven tone, lacklustre dynamics, excessive scooping, wavery pitch and lack of top range in the Debbie Gibson I remember. But her voice on this album is such a mere shadow of its youthful self that she resorts to these irritating vocal bandaids to get through the song. Any track that had a 'big finish' invariably caused her to run out of steam long before she got there. A belter, Deb is not.
(and I know what I'm talking about, I'm a trained singer myself. If Deborah has a singing teacher, he/she should be shot).

This album was a huge disappointment for me. I love Broadway, but Deb fails terribly to give these songs the great renditions they deserve.
I should add, I have never had the fortune to see Deb sing live, so for all I know, maybe she COULD have done these songs justice had she avoided the pop slant. But this album shows neither the songs nor any talent she still has to advantage at all.

Listen to some Idina Menzel if you want a pop-feel voice that can also out-Belt them all.

        5 out of 5 stars A Taste of Broadway.......2004-10-13

I've been a fan of her since God only knows. I know she's not just talented but she is very passionate of (her) music. Knowing that she moved herself into broadways, it's rather of a challenge for me to listen to the songs especially when I'm too familiar with her pop genre. But after a while, I'm used to it coz Debbie is still Debbie to me. She's not afraid of re-arranging the original song to her style, at least she knows what she's doing and again she's proven it. My most favourite track is "Colored Lights", it's light, cheerful, somewhat witty and, in a way, brings up my imagination of seeing her (and the casts) on stage performing the song. All in all, Debbie still has a class and style for us to share.

        1 out of 5 stars OUCH!.......2004-08-23

Deborah Gibson is a talented rock star. With a good musical director, she has proved herself to be a wonderful musical theatre performer. This album, however, is a very uneasy marriage of the two genres. She sings every showtune on the album as if it's a pop tune with horrendous bubble gum arrangements. I have seen Miss Gibson in two musicals and have heard her sing showtunes live on other occasions- she knows how to sing showtunes. On this album, however, she's trying to pander to her pop audience and in the process, she created an album that fails as a pop album and as a showtune album. I can only hope that Miss Gibson finds a better musical director the next time she decides to record showtunes.

5 out of 5 stars (Deborah Gibson ) AT HER BEST!!!!.......2004-04-23

Deborah really sing's her heart out on this cd
and it is a must for all of Deborah's Fan's.
Please take the time out and listen to some clip's
of some of the song's from the album. Thank's.

        Love You Deborah!!!!
        You are the Best!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Deborah delivers deliciously.......2004-02-13

After more than 15 years in the business, Deborah Gibson has learned many lessons and fulfilled many dreams. After 2001's horrifyingly misguided "M.Y.O.B.," she returns to the adult contemporary sound that landed her two number one hits on the Billboard charts, and turns that up a couple of notches. By selecting 13 showtunes from varying Broadway musicals, Gibson satisfies immensely, and delivers a unique compilation worthy of at least one full listen.

"Colored Lights" is not meant to be a showcase of hit tunes; many of the songs on this opus aren't radio hits. Instead, Gibson puts together a delicious smorgasbord of rhythmic melodies and heartfelt ballads that complement her voice (that, strangely enough, hasn't seemed to change that much after more than a decade in the industry).

What is also important to consider in one's evaluation of "Colored Lights" is that, while comparison with the original works/performers is inevitable, we should also take the time to consider that Gibson's pop sensibilities will always shine through. Perhaps it is for that reason, that Gibson has had the best of both pop stardom and Broadway success, that she gives new dimension to these melodies.

The standouts on this collection include "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love," which radio would do well to pick up, as the soothing melody and heartfelt delivery will find AC audiences easily; "On My Own," off "Les Miserables," where Gibson as Eponine sounds both heartbroken yet hopeful; the playful title track, from "The Rink," which features some of the most whimsical lyrics I've heard off Broadway thus far; "Raise the Roof," which is truly enjoyable in its pseudo-Latino reincarnation in Gibson's hands (yes, it does beg for a house remix; Gibson's gay audience will see to its success), and "Anytime (I Am There)," which is heartbreaking in its stark delivery, and is easily one of my top five Gibson tracks of all time.

Admittedly, Gibson can't overcome comparisons to the definitive versions of some of the songs. Let's face it: Debbie ain't no Barbra. Her versions of "I'm the Greatest Star" and "Who Are You Now?," while stellar on their own, just fall flat when compare to Streisand's. "Let Me Entertain You," off "Gypsy," ironically, isn't very entertaining, and "Blame It On The Summer Night" drags on.

All in all, "Colored Lights" puts together a collection of songs that are quite distinct and classy, and is easily one of the more worthy albums in Ms. Gibson's discography. She would do well to continue producing albums along this line instead of trying to fight the Britney's and Christina's, because those fads fade, and only the classics remain. Trust in "Colored Lights" to earn a well-deserved place in that section of your record collection.
