5 out of 5 stars Gravity Kills' First.......2007-02-19

Well, where do I start. This is Gravity Kills' first release and I must say it's their best. I had, for the longest time, had a tough time deciding on what was better "Perversion" or the "Self-Titled". Both are great but I feel the first has a much darker atmospheric style. The whole album seems to flow in and out until you reach your destination of the end. Even the opener "Forward" sets the tone, preparing you for what's to come. I don't think there is one below average track on this cd. My favorites from the release are probably "Guilty", "Here", "Inside", and "Hold". Here's the ratings...

2. Guilty - 10/10
3. Blame - 10/10
4. Down - 10/10
5. Here - 10/10
6. Enough - 10/10
7. Inside - 10/10
8. Goodbye - 8.5/10
9. Never - 10/10
10. Last - 10/10
11. Hold - 10/10

Overall: 98% A

It's a really good start for a pretty good band. I'm suprised they didn't get more popular than they did. The whole album is awesome. My only complaint would be that the track "Inside" is too short. Also, I would strongly disagree that this band is a ripoff of other Industrial acts like Nine Inch Nails just because of how different it sounds. The vocals make it unique and the fact that it never slows down and gives you a more sad side like with NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine". It's just much more angry unlike NIN which has a sad and angry side. Both are great though, and have plenty to offer. Anyone who enjoys acts like Filter, Nine Inch Nails, or even Ministry should check this out.

4 out of 5 stars Dunno why everyone's so down on this one.......2005-11-20

I think Gravity Kills gets unfairly dumped on just because they happened to get famous after NIN and Skinny Puppy. Quite frankly, I don't know what it is you wouldn't like about this CD if you liked all those other ones. OK, so it's not the most original thing on the planet, but so what? It's fun to listen to, and that's honestly all I ask. Maybe others demand some kind of earth-shattering experince, but I think that's just being unreasonable.

There are some slight dragging moments in here, but overall it's a solid, if conventional, idustrial rock production. If "breaking the mold" is what you want, then maybe stay away, but its by no means a bad album.

1 out of 5 stars Few FEW catchy parts, but mostly generic..........2005-05-13

I'm finding it hard to believe that this received a 4.5 cumulative review. Now I generally love this kind of music; I am a huge NIN, Skinny Puppy, and somewhat of a KMFDM and Stabbing Westward fan. This is just so lifeless, and by-the-numbers though and you really can tell listening to it. Take the lyrics for "Guilty" for instance (one of the higher points of the album). "1 and 1 and 1 make three. 1 and 1 why can't you see. Im killing you, you're killing me" Don't kill me if those aren't the exact lyrics but whatever, just generic uninteresting stuff. There's a reason you can buy this used for what was it....$1.94? OH and you can get there follow up (i think it was the follow up) "Perversion" for one cent!! Yes that's right one f**king cent. There's a little guilty pleasure to be found on here with (i didn't mean to do that) "Guilty" and "Enough" almost shows some promise. Everything else is predictable garbage with the same disco beat to all of it. I don't like being harsh on CDs I own, since I did buy the thing after all, and I did try to give it a fair chance. Some deserve it though. I'll sell you my copy for a quarter if you want it.

5 out of 5 stars their best work!.......2005-03-11

I bought all three albums from here because i saved a bunch of money and I've been meaning to get their cd's for years. Their first is my favorite but they are all good. The first one is so innovative for its time 96 I think.

5 out of 5 stars The First and the Best!!!.......2005-02-04

This cd kicks! The band started in '94 and this came out in '96, and I still listen to it alot. It's just a great album. Now, I consider myself to be a rock/metal type of guy, so this is about as close as I get to "BigBass/Techno/Pop/HipHop" kinda stuff... but I just gotta make an excep. for these guys. It's rock that can also appeal to your dance side, so just the hard-core people won't like it. Other than that it's all good; same with their other two or three albums after this one. All summer long, I love to roll-up at a stoplight with this stuff blasting! haha... GK forever!!!
...sorry to see you guys go:(

On Are You Nervous?, Rock Kills Kid display a deep affinity for '80s acts such as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, U2, and the Cure, yet rarely has a band wearing their influences this prominently on their sleeve sounded more refreshing. On the opening dance floor craze "Paralyzed," the steady rockin' "Hide Away," the frenetic "Don't Want To Stay," the easy-going but evocative "Back To Life," and the radio-ready title track, Rock Kills Kid demonstrate a knack for creating catchy, heartfelt rock & roll-inflected pop that places this outfit in a position to save contemporary music from itself. Rock Kills Kid are a great band that have already climbed to dizzying artistic heights and seem poised to climb to equally impressive commercial ones as well. A new high in American rock music. --Jedd Beaudoin

Album Description

With echoing, nervy guitars, driving rhythms, and new-wave synths, the debut from Rock Kills Kid is contemporary post-punk at its most addictive, jagged and atmospheric. Produced by Mark Trobino, the emotional tension woven throughout Are You Nervous? recalls some of the darkest, most angst-filled recordings by The Cure, Joy Division and The Smiths-but with Bono-and Springsteen-inspired raucous rocker Jeff Tucker in the spotlight. For Rock Kills Kid, rock'n'roll is salvation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-04-05

Wow! Rock Kills Kid's freshman album is a breath of fresh air. The first song, "Paralized" is a classic pop rock anthem. A hint of "U2" seems spread throughout the tracks along with simple, yet breathe-taking music. I picked this CD from the recommendation of a music store employee and I was not let down.

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-03-23

In the same mold as The Killers and Boy Kill Boy (to name a couple), these guys are just as good as them. Lead singer's vocals may not be as distinct as others, but music is still great. I would say a little more of 80's flavor. The 1st five songs are hands down GREAT. The last 5 are average.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent debut.......2006-07-21

This is an excellent debut that I am surprised has received as little buzz as it has.

The comparisons to The Killers and The Bravery are valid but there are some differences. The Killers debut had a somewhat harder edge than this CD. Rock Kills Kid (RKK) songs are more similar to The Bravery but with better production and far better vocals.

The CD opens with the lead single Paralyzed a catchy danceable tune that should be RKK's breakout like Somebody Told Me was for The Killers. There are really no throwaway tracks on the CD but I do agree that the first half of the record is stronger than the second half. These guys channel lots of the 80's new wave groups as at times the vocals come off like Morrisey's and the third track Midnight sounds like Seven and the Ragged Tiger era Duran Duran.

A big complaint many reviewers will have is the brevity of the CD - I believe it clocks in at 38 minutes. Personally, I would rather have a strong short CD than a double CD filled with largely disposable trash (do you hear me Red Hot Chili Peppers!). It is an easy record to get your arms completely around it quickly.

Great CD, catchy beats, excellent production. I just hope more people hear about RKK.

2 out of 5 stars Sacrilege to compare with 80's legend bands........2006-07-14

To compare this with the Smiths the Furs and the Cure..?
is a sacrilege. It is far from those bands, not remotely in their league, and not even close to their sound..

Its lite bouncy uninspired pop. Which is fine, but please be honest with musical comparisons, perhaps listen to the refered bands before using them as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Union Of The Snake........2006-06-23

If you read my reviews at all, then you know I'm a punk/new wave/romantic fanatic. I'm always on the lookout for new blood in the old vein. In the past 4 years several bands have brought back that classic sound from the late 70's and early 80's that has sorely been missing since 1990. Rock Kills Kid certainly have been influenced by U2, Duran Duran, Modern English, The Cure, The Smiths, The Psychedelic Furs and A Flock Of Seagulls among others. They compete perfectly with the new breeds The Killers, Interpol, The Music, Keane, Snow Patrol, Blue October, Arcade Fire and Franz Ferdinand to name but a few.

So, how IS the music on "Are You Nervous?" Well, I saw the video for "Paralyzed" on MySpace back in April 2006 and couldn't wait to pick up a copy in May. I've listened to it a dozen times and I have to say I'm looking forward to hearing more from this band. The first half of the disc is perfect with "Parlyzed", "Hideaway", "Midnight", "Are You Nervous?" and "Back To Life". Any of these five tracks should be hits on alternative radio stations across the country. Things stumble a bit on the back five as "Life's A Bitch" misses slightly, while "Run Like Hell" (no, not Pink Floyd's song) and "Don't Want To Stay" keep up the standard set on the first half of the disc. The final two tracks "Hope Song" and "Raise Your Hands" seem like toss offs. Overall, a great listen, and a great full-length debut.

The Kills' debut is a stark 21st Century blues album, the sort of thing that would have struggled to find an audience before the White Stripes broke into the mainstream. So it's lucky for them--and us--that they had such respectable coattails to ride on. The duo--Alison Mosshart, a.k.a. VV, and Hotel--play a music that's blues influenced with a garage rock edge, and that's where the similarities end. Sure, the Kills use a drum machine instead of a live drummer, but the differences run much deeper than that: The Kills's blues rock is dirtier and more sex-drenched version of blues rock, a result of the shared vocal duties of Hotel and VV. The sultry "Hitched" says it all ("I'll get my name stitched on your lips so you won't get hitched"). These are songs that sweat sexual menace, recalling Boss Hogg or early PJ Harvey (on "Superstition" and "Wait," VV's voice is a dead ringer for young Polly Jean's). Best of all, these songs are stuffed with hooks. In a sea of pretenders, the Kills are capable of providing some genuine competition for the White Stripes.--Robert Burrow

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2006-02-28

Be wary, this disc is not for everyone. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that most people would really dislike this album. I also don't think giving this album a once-or-twice-over at a friend's house would be necissarily beneficial. Borrow it from someone for awhile if you really want a first impression, but it takes a few listens to get used to the differences between this and alot of other bands. If you're willing to take a chance, go for it, buy this disc and don't give up on it until you're thoroughly convinced it's either fantastic or terrible.

1 out of 5 stars Where's That Confounded Bridge?.......2004-07-24

Oh, where to start with this album? Perhaps with the complete lack of original, solid musical ideas--Every blessed song is a two-chord riff lifted from beginner blues riff books, Black Sabbath and a variety of other notables, stripped of course of the power, feeling and (most importantly) chord changes to OTHER notes that differentiate real music from two-chord bong-smoking jam room dirges. Perhaps with the vocals, which, try as they might to sound jaded and bored, sound only boring and suspiciously like the cheesy vocalist from the faux-blues epic Black Velvet of a few years back. Other songs steal vocal mannerisms from The Velvet Underground, notably Maureen Tucker. In describing their vocal sound, unexceptional is far too generous. They are like the boiled-down bottom-scrapings of 10,000 bad bar-band singers. Perhaps it's the intentionally scratchy street recordings of stoner pals, calculated to sound as strung-out and rotten-toothed as possible with their totally fake content about hustling, etc... These remind me of nothing so much as Janis Joplin's brain dead stage rantings (hey man, hey man) which while excruciating were at least real, not the mimicry of suburbanite faux-junkies slumming in the real world of suffering and economic deprivation. This explains the attachment (for all the wrong reasons) to the Velvet Underground , and reminds me strongly of the dishonesty of the Cowboy Junkies, another fake-ass pseudo band, who coyly skirted around with the idea that they might have tried heroin, maybe...If these guys are not actually grad students studying post-structuralism, I'll eat my hat. Most egregious of all is the appalling cover art and booklet, which, if you didn't get it, totally hammers you on the head with the idea that The Kills are for real, yo--liner notes detailing the death of a friend by overdose, which carefully mentions a needle exchange, nodding out, turning blue and a variety of other clues to let us know that they are indeed in the know. Yeah, I saw Trainspotting too. Putrid beyond words, and totally of the moment in the most fake-real fakey way possible: fake low-fi sound, fake blues, fake street cred, fake everything. If you want a real contemporary indie take on the blues that isn't just copy-cat grad-school thievery, check out the new album by the Eagles of Death Metal, called Peace, Love and Death Metal. It's everything this fake turd is not: witty, heavy and light simultaneously, and fun. It's also, unlike The Kills, NOT navel-gazing narcissistic humbug that doesn't have a clue how much it sucks. I gave one star because they didn't have a choice for no stars on the menu. Amazon should have negative interger stars for stuff like this. As a notable rocker once said, do you ever get the feeling you've been cheated? What a waste...

5 out of 5 stars Another Fallen Emo Soldier!!!!.......2007-04-10

This is in my personal opinion, the best Emo/Punk release of 2004. Every song is amazing. It's such a shame that they broke up before we got to hear a follow-up. The songs are very deep in lyrical nature, mostly dealing with christian views..(But don't let that turn you away)...there is a lot more to Letterkills than that. This record is a must for fans of Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, The Used, Thursday...stuff like that. It mixes modern Emo creativity with an almost Ac/Dc vibe at times, Producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Hoobastank) brings out the best in these guys, helping them to create a record that will hopefully live on, even though they didn't.

BEST SONGS:
"Clock Is Down"
"Time Marches On"
"Carry You" and
"Hold My Heart (Part Two)"

yes, they are christian but dont think their music is all goody-two shoes.
the bad news is that the band is no longer together...so buy this cd before it dissappears from the stores forever...

5 out of 5 stars Very good CD.......2006-04-23

This album has very good modern punk resemblances but also has some rock 'n' roll riffs which remind of the older rock bands. All the lyrics are ver well written and the melodies are very nice and catchy. I was very impressed with the drums and the drummer does some very innovative double pedal rolls in Hold My Heart Part1 and Lights Out. The choruses are very catchy mostly when the whole band starts singing different parts which gives an effect of choir which goes very well with this music. This band makes you wanna go to their shows and headbang like mad!!

In the wake of Nine Inch Nails' ascent to superstardom, a gaggle of bands usurped at least seven of Trent Reznor's nine inches and crafted catchy electronic metal songs that festered with brooding angst. One of the best of these groups was Gravity Kills, which balanced melody, noise, and grooveability in equal parts. But the band's second disc, Perversion, lacks the immediacy, dynamics, and hooks of their self-titled debut. The songs are constructed in the same mechanized dance framework, but they don't build and dip in intensity, and they rarely create any atmosphere but radio-static overload. There are a few exceptions. "Wanted" shifts from a jaggedly lumbering surge to a buzz-saw grind, and "Disintegrate" features some compelling drum & bass beats and a pretty decent chorus. Overall, however, Gravity Kills have slipped from their perch and are now nearly indistinguishable from any other bar band with samplers. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Gravity Kills' Sophomore Release.......2007-02-19

Well, they did it. For a Second release Gravity Kills still manages to make another amazing album. For the awhile I had the hardest time deciding on which was better; the first or the second. It ended up being the first just because of the overall greatness. I seems to be that the first has a little more of a sludgy slow feel to it and the second is a bit more fast paced. The second, however, has a couple of better tracks than the first has to offer. Some of my favorites from the album are "Falling", "Crashing", "Drown", and "Alive". Here's my track ratings...

1. Falling - 10/10
2. If - 10/10
3. Crashing - 10/10
4. Drown - 10/10
5. Alive - 10/10
6. Wanted - 9.5/10
7. Always - 10/10
8. One - 9/10
9. Disintegrate - 10/10
10. Belief (To Rust) - 9/10

Overall: 97% A

Overall for a second release it doesn't disappoint. I don't think it flows as well as the first one does but with tracks like "Alive" and "Crashing" it definatly gives the first a run for its money. Anyone who enjoyed the first or just loves a good dose of Industrial Metal should give this a shot. You actually might like what you hear.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first, but solid........2005-09-27

I know, I told you in early 2002 that it was great. But at that time I was also like 14 or 15. In years to come, I've listened to this again in occasion, and I realize that it is not really the wonderful album I though it was. Oh, and now since I'm 18 I've heard so many other albums that things put it in perspective.

But also, what many forget is that music is in fact subjective. That's why bands like this have a fan base. What the band lacks is made up for in good overall songs. Contrary to popular belief, I think people will compare anything angry that has keyboards to NIN, no matter how it sounds. The first time, it was partly faulted in production, which was done by the same guy who produced "PHM". This, the second GK album, while not perfect does have its moments.

Sadly, you can sort of hear a lack of edginess, which can be blamed on the record label, TVT, which is why they left after this album. It's definitely got its moments. I like the more electronic tracks on the album. Particuarly with "Alive", which is really edgy, with heavy bass and drum. While the drums were simple, the song turned out to be a pretty good one. "Disintegrate" has a repetitive yet addictive synth riff. It makes the song, as does the verse beat. It also ends on a great note. While not really electronic, I particuarly do enjoy the rhythm of "Belief (to Rust)", which shows that some of the lyrics here are really great. It also surprisingly ends with some chimes.

Some songs are in typical Gravity Kills formula, so if you wanted some of what you heard the first time around, there is some of that. "Drown" and "One" are good examples of this. Neither track is particularly spectacular. However, it does show a metal side to the band. Just don't expect any guitar solos or anything in Gravity Kills.

But what makes it great is that while it's not completely talented, the songs themselves were written well enough and some of the members did show some talent. Doug Firley had some great keyboard lines and synth riffs while Jeff Scheel was a great singer, and in spite occasionally sounding like Trent when getting nasal, he was rather unique. As for the other two members, they don't get involved enough with their instruments, but I do like a lot of the drumming anyway. Although I still absolutely love the first album, this one is good but has some tracks that don't stand out quite as much. If you like what you know from Gravity Kills, I recommend it. If you don't, I can't guarantee that you'll like it.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a 2nd..........2005-02-04

This one wasn't quite as good as their first one, but it still rocks none the less. It's still the same stuff, just mixed up a bit more here and there. I LOVE "falling" and "alive". There's a few other good ones on here too. Oh! and the song "crashing" is deff one of the bands best! Buy this one and rock on!!!

3 out of 5 stars hmmmmm.... i guess.......2004-01-22

Well, if your like me you probably heard their first radio hit song.... (guilty).... and if like me you probably liked it. since then i havent heard from them nor purchased a cd. So i thought id give them a try.... I have to agree they sound very...i mean very similiar to NIN.... nothing wrong with that. But the music gets repetitive, id have to say the best song on this album is the last one.... Belief(to rust). But only because its very deifferent than the rest. If your in a rock out mood, then this cd is the answer, if your more into creativeness, then perhaps you should listen to something else.... all in all its a cd i can listen to, a few times get tired of it, and never play it again until im angry or drunk.

5 out of 5 stars Gravity Kills Rocks.......2003-06-10

What you got here is failure to recognize good music. People try and compare bands these days to just about anything. The truth is this band went from their first album, which popped out three good singles which both hit TV and dance clubs. This band crossed two of musics most popular sounds and created one heavy hitting sound. From Mortal Kombat to TBS promos this band got through on their first and didnt disappoint on their second. Instead of trying to copy something, they built on what they started from. Making some of the guitars heavier and more dominant, while keeping the vocals and mixing where they should be and taking the beats to a newer level. This is a great album and one of the greatest follow-ups in music.

5 out of 5 stars Finally and Fulfilling!.......2005-10-28

Believe the hype, _Shining_ fans. These bits and pieces of music - volume 1 focuses more on "studio music and textures" of the themes devised for the film while volume 2 spends its allotted tracks on the more fully developed orchestra tracks - hold just about everything. I'll encourage you to follow that impulse/interest and add this work to your collection.

What do you get? Well, for me, the treat was volume 2's first track - the film's title track - Ms Carlos explains why Kubrick nixed it - but it is as haunting as the final draft that follows Jack Torrance's lil yellow bug to The Overlook climbing the Rockies. The other tracks are renderings and attempts to put the novel into music forms. The liner notes are great - like a listening session over coffee with the composer.

Both volumes are must haves for those of us all agog over the film's score (and scoring possibilities) but if you just want to hold a haunting, get volume 2 and put track one on repeat until you, that hag hottie in the tub, or your six year old's index finger hollers, "redrum!"

5 out of 5 stars Settling Old Scores.......2005-10-10

This second volume of Wendy's lost film soundtracks concentrates more on her full orchestral scores. Although she achieved fame as a synthesist, one reason she succeeded so well is her knowledge of and attention to timbral colors and the placement of different voices -- in short, orchestration. It should come as little surprise therefore that when writing for a full orchestra she's fully accomplished and impressively skilled.

Synthesizer cues are also included, from early (1981) novelty demonstrations for Dolby Labs to later (1998) soundtrack work utilizing her state-of-the-art digital synthesizers.

As usual for her, voluminous liner notes detail not only the working methods behind each of the pieces, but also glimpses into the politics and disappointments that delayed the release of these tracks. How many composers could survive having a significant portion of their career locked away in a vault for 25 years?

On their sophomore release, the Kills come on like a post-punk version of Robert Mitchum in The Night of the Hunter--with "hate" tattooed on one hand, "love" on the other. Lyrics reference the two to the extent that there's even a song called "I Hate the Way You Love" (plus a slow version, "I Hate the Way You Love, Pt. 2"). Similarly, VV (Alison Mosshart) sings like a cross between PJ Harvey and Christina Martinez (Boss Hog). And yet, despite lines like, "Get the guns out" ("Love is a Deserter") and "Lost a lot of blood" ("At the Back of the Shell"), No Wow is too catchy to be a bummer (must be "love" asserting its presence). VV and Hotel (Jamie Hince) make their songs move and groove with a minimum of fuss, mostly just some grubby guitar, unobtrusive drum machine, and Suicide-like electronic pulses. Mitchum would surely approve. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars this band rocks .......2006-09-07

The parallels to early PJ Harvey (and White Stripes) are on cue. If you like minimalist crunchy/bluesy rock with punk undertones, especially with searing female vocals, then this is the band for you. The music of Chrissie Hynde, Kim Deal, and Joan Jett also come to mind. The Kills aren't mimicking these greats, they are unquestionably unique, but they have definitely tapped into the same incredible sound.

The Kills are like eating 90% cocoa chocolate - not much sugar or cream, but overpoweringly dark and delicious. Not everybody has the taste for it, but those who do will love this.

3 out of 5 stars Rock Fast, Die Young.......2006-03-13

Greasy like unwashed hair. Frantic like a smack addict looking for a fix. Dirty like an inner city squat. The Kills make music that feels like it's been made in a filthy apartment with no décor save for an ashtray full of yellowing cigarette stubs and a couch smeared with indecipherable stains. Like the Mickey and Mallory of the US alternative music scene, Alison `VV' Mosshart and Jamie `Hotel' Hince have created a snarling opus on No Wow that seductively recalls PJ Harvey at her most enthralling. After making a name for themselves on the back of 2004 debut Keep On Your Mean Side, the second album found the partnership between VV and Hotel laying down their sound in a Michigan ghost town. Resulting single The Good Ones is currently getting plenty of radio play and Rage is enjoying the sexy presentation of VV in the video, yet there's a sinister element to the music of The Kills that can't be underestimated. Lyrics such as `I can't get full. Please could you fix my shakes' indicate that I Hate The Way shares more than just a tempo shift with The Velvet Underground's incredible tune Heroin, while the aloof lyrics of Rodeo Town - `If I am so evil, why are you satisfied?' - offer further evidence of a bleak partnership. Of course, like Natural Born Killers, it's bound to end in violence and murder, but No Wow's still a neat ride through makeshift percussion, panicky guitar and haunted vocals. A DVD is included so you can make up your own mind about their chemical and personal addictions, but it's fairly obvious The Kills are more Black Plague than White Stripe.

5 out of 5 stars Strange... but who ever said that was a bad thing?.......2005-09-30

I had no idea what to expect when I popped in the CD. I only bought it because of vague good memories of the reviews and because I liked the name of their previous album (Keep On Your Mean Side). I popped it in, and...
1. No Wow- ...I was greeted by a sinister, strangely compelling fuzz. After I was comptetely addicted to the sound itself, the voice came, and I was hooked. Telephone Radio Germany is at the end of this or the beginning of Love Is A Deserter. I can't quite tell, but that's the only part of the album I regularly skip anyway.
2. Love Is A Deserter- I love a song where, when the singer tells you to sleep, you suddenly become wide awake and watchful. This is one of them ("Hammering In My Head" by Garbage is another).
3. Dead Road 7- I can feel the lonely, winding road...
4. The Good Ones- Seemingly wistful, maybe even happy, until they start talking about being self-destructive to make yourself appreciate what is around.
5. I Hate The Way You Love- My favorite. It has some of the best lyrics on the CD, as well as a nicely insane feeling.
6. I Hate The Way You Love Pt. 2- She mournfully, beautifully sings "I hate the way you love" over and over.
7. At The Back Of The Shell- Playground hand clapping and boldly attacking words.
8. Sweet Cloud- More good lyrics: "I love him so, in turn I kill. I know no words to make it right."
9. Rodeo Town- She bitterly asks, "If I'm so evil, why are you satisfied?"
10. Murdermile- A fast, wild, raucous song interspersed with a guy saying "You've got me on the wrong track honey."
11. Ticket Man- A nicely melancholy song that sounds like it was sung during the Great Depression, at least to me, because of the simplicity and worry.

5 out of 5 stars Totally awesome.......2005-07-28

Wow. And really, really wow, not just 'cos it's like the album's name. This one's a stunner. No Wow is the sort of album that after one listen might not impress much. Then you listen again, and again, and it quickly becomes a favourite. Or at least it has for me.
Having heard 4 or 5 of the album tracks already, I knew what to expect. But I really isn't until you listen to the whole album that you hear such songs as lead single 'The Good Ones' and forthcoming single 'Love Is A Deserter', in context, at their best. Every song literally bristles with sexiness, with tension, as VV's moaning, strained vocals hover perfectly matched to Hotel's fuzzy guitar. Surely, if ever there was a match made in heaven, this was it.
It's an album on which you have to take a long, long time to choose stand out tracks. For me, it's the songs where VV really lets loose, where you hear what she can really do with that voice of hers. On 'Rodeo Town', the most calm and, in my opinion, most beautiful, of all the album's songs, VV's vocals are gorgeous, the song itself is amazing. 'Sweet Cloud' is notable for its particularly bitter chorus 'I know no words to fix my killing, but I'd do anything to bring my brother alive', and its nagging hook, that will absolutely stick in your head for days.
Now I've only mentioned the end half of the album so far, where the beginning is equally as good. The first 5 songs are just full of tension, the sort of pent up rock music that just makes you wanna pick up a guitar, or have sex, or drink, a lot. Something extreme anyway. As a record's beginning, they really knock you for six. Single 'The Good Ones' is the singular most sex-filled song I've ever known, it just bristles with energy, and it's dark lyrics really shine amongst The Kills' other babies. Then there's 'Dead Road 7' - phwoar, that girl can't half yell. It's a real shocker this one, but absolutely beautiful all at once. Future single 'Love Is A Deserter' asks us to 'Get the guns out' repeatedly, to a point where the message is so much hammered home that it is tempting to, indeed, get a gun out. Title track 'No Wow' really does deserve a wow, after all, what other song could pull off the first line: 'Gonna have to step over my dead body, before you walk out that door.' Now that, my friends is real music.
Then, what other band could pull off this record? The Kills have successfully created a stand out album, which will be a definitive album this year. It's sexual, it's tense, it's taut, it's bare, sparse, torn apart, put back together again and bloody well put in a dual case for your listening pleasure.
Now THAT's music. Again, altogether now, WOW.

Gravity Kills' third album finds the Missouri-based group striking a perfect balance between rock, metal, and industrial, all the while staying within pop-leaning song structures. Strident rhythms, unrelenting intensity, and processed vocals à la Ministry and Nine Inch Nails are the order of the day, though straight-ahead songs like "Love Sex and Money" display surprisingly few technical bells and whistles despite production by Martin Atkins (Pigface, Ministry). "Fifteen Minutes" (of shame, rather than fame) is catchy and lyrically astute. Jeff Scheel's passionate vocals and keen lyrics elevate even average songs--and there are a few scattered about Superstarved. The standouts include the rousing "One Thing," a fairly true-to-the-original cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," the tortured title track, and the edgy "Wide Awake." These musicians may not be groundbreakers, but Superstarved is an assured outing by a talented quartet. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums I Have........2006-11-08

First off I wanna know why do people always compare this band to NIN cause I don't think they sound anything alike,I mean you can tell it's two differant people singing and NIN music is...well I guess a little heavier, now Gravity Kills and Sister Machine Gun well lets just say I can't tell witch band is witch or if it's gravity kills lead singer(can't think of his name) or sister machine gun's lead singer(again, can't think of his name),and they play they same type of music.

Now on to the actual review of the album,
like my title this is one of my best albums in my cd collection. I have all 5 albums and the MK album, thats how I found out about this band,as soon as I heard the Goodbye demo I was hooked. I bought this album and just like all the rest of the gk albums I don't think theres a song on it that I hate, I think every song is great. its one of my most listened to albums, every time I go some where in my car this album is in the player about 70 % of the time.I hated to here that this was going to be their last album cause I really like listining to gk and whis they wouldn't of broke up.

3 out of 5 stars NIN is terrible..........2005-07-25

Gravity Kills doesn't sound like that horrible band that Trent Reznor created. The only thing that they have in common is they use effects in the music. I've heard this Gravity Kills album and the first one but haven't heard the second one (so I can't comment on that albums similarites to NIN) but both were good rock CDs. This CD isn't amazing and doesn't break any new ground or anything but at least its an enjoyable sound that I revisit every now and then. This is basically a decent CD for when you want something new to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars All The Way!.......2005-02-04

This album friggin' rocks. It's about as close to modern-rock as the band ever got, not that the thumping bass and kicks weren't good in their earlier stuff, but this is just a bit less "club". It still holds true to the guitar and vocal style of the band, and out of the dozen or so tracks, i'd say there's at least 7 or 8 that kick ass! And, even though all their other stuff set the tone for the band, I would still say that the song "One Thing" has to be the BEST one the guys ever recorded! (that's right, better than Guilty) You got to have this one to round off your collection... a MUST have!

    5 out of 5 stars gk's last and best..........2003-04-30

Throughout the course of their career, Gravity Kills always took a lot of heat for whatever people wanted to dis them about. And they worked hard for everything they did. It culminated in "Superstarved," their last CD, which showed real growth from the band in pretty much all facets of their music.

Pretty much all of the musical aspects on the album sound a bit less polished and glossed over than the unremarkably sterile Perversion. The band makes a serious statement from the first snare shot and power chord of the album on the very traditionally industrial-sounding "love sex and money." It might be a simple progression but they pull it off expertly and with a lot of flourish. When I first heard the scream that closed the chorus I knew the album was going to be all I expected it to be. And Gravity Kills sticks with their basic guitar + drums + keyboards + scream formula for pretty much the whole album, stopping here and there to try something a little different or pick up a different influence. The standouts also include: "fifteen minutes," with very catchy guitars throughout, strong programming and a very powerful chorus; "forget your name," where Duddenhoffer and Firley create a fragmented wall of sound as the bridge of the song and Scheel's carefully honed scream seems to break character for a tiny moment, and you can hear a little bit of pain in there... "breakdown," with catchy drums and a guitar riff building a strong verse, with some of Scheel's best lyrics on the album; "one thing," the logical first single - the song feels very full and well-rounded, and it's got a lot of pop crunch to it; the fractured interpretation of "personal jesus" where Duddenhoffer picks up an acoustic and Firley proceeds to warp the sounds into some melody floating from a futuristic desert; "suffocate," a complex rampage of keyboards and drums punctuated with great stop-and-go guitar riffs and another of Scheel's best efforts on the album. finally, the title track, "superstarved" sees the band breaking the most new ground on the album, moving from a barely pulsating verse into a drum and bass-influenced chorus thrown into a blender with vocal distortion and Duddenhoffer's trademark guitars. The post-chorus and coda of the song has to be some of the best sounding vocals Jeff Scheel has ever done, and oddly some of the most beautifully vicious music Gravity Kills ever produced.

To be honest, Scheel still sings about some pretty dumb and bland stuff now and then, but I challenge you to find an industrial vocalist nowadays who doesn't. That's probably the only downside to the album - each song has good melody and good hooks, something regained from the self-titled debut, but unlike Perversion and Gravity Kills, Superstarved lets each song sound a little different than all the others. The album is very radio-friendly, but received little attention due to the problems the band had with the Sanctuary label. Unfortunately, these problems eventually caused the band to split in January of 2003 and the members to move onto different projects.

Although I'm sad to see them go, Superstarved is a fitting finale for Gravity Kills - they went out fighting with energy in their instruments and the unquenchable fire still stuck in Scheel's throat. This is their best album and should be a must-own for any industrial fan.

2 out of 5 stars Same old, same old.......2002-10-03

When Gravity Kills' first album came out, I was all over it. I played it on my radio show, and I also played it at home. It is a good example of industrial rock, and if the lyrics were a bit silly, the music was good enough, and new enough, that I could let it slide. Gravity Kills' first album was part of the initial onslaught of industrial rock, and the singles were gobbled up by the Hollywood machine for use in soundtracks.

Superstarved is more of the same. The result is a recycled morass. In the years that have passed since their last album, I'd have thought there would be some sort of growth, but what I hear instead is entropy. I would not be surprised if Gravity Kills continues to be used in movie soundtracks. They have that "edgy, angry, raw sound" that works perfectly in action movies or scenes where the protagonist is harbouring thoughts of jealous rage.

However, the music is no longer fresh, and what was once really cool has become generic. And now, I can no longer let the silly, shallow lyrics slide. "Forget Your Name" is probably the worst of the bunch, with lines like "Well I forget your name, but I love you. I forget your name, but I need you, too. I forget your name, I know you're feeling the same, I forget your name, but I want you, want you."

This Shatneresque repetition of simple phrases is used throughout the album. In "Enemy," I hear "I don't want to be your enemy. Never gonna be never gonna be your enemy. I don't want to be your enemy."

The icing on the cake is "15 Minutes". The hollering goes thusly: "I want my 15 minutes of shame. I want my 15 minutes, my 15 minutes of shame."

    You got it, guys.
