DJ Pogo Presents the Breaks...the Harmless holy grail!.......2003-03-22
The theme behind this release is funk tracks that provided the blueprint for old school hip-hop. But forget about that. These songs stand firmly on their own. Simply put, if you like mad, funky beats, scratchy, wah-wah guitars, and head-nodding bass lines, then this CD is an essential purchase.
Every song is a highlight, but if I could only name a few stand-outs: the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache" takes the old Ventures tune and breathes funky bongos into it; the Jimmy Castor Bunch tear it up on one of the coolest, most crazed funk songs I've ever heard, "It's Just Begun;" the Vibrettes give us "Humpty Dump," which is a raw funk track with one heck of a breakbeat; a group of studio musicians under the name Rhthym Heritage grind out wah-wah '70s actionsploitation on "Theme from SWAT;" the Head Hunters drag out "God Made Me Funky" over 9 minutes of dirty funk; my favorite guitarist Dennis Coffey (the man who gave us "Theme From Black Belt Jones," which is available on another Harmless disc, Pulp Fusion volume 3) unleashes the essential "Scorpio;" the 24-Carat Black stretch out a hypnotic bass line on their self-titled track; and Ike Turner's Kings of Ryhthm provide what I consider to be the best breakbeat on the CD, on "Funky Mule."
It might be expensive if you manage to find it, and it might never be put back in print. But regardless, if you dig this kind of music, then you owe it to yourself to get hold of this amazing disc.
