5 out of 5 stars Well what can I say.......2002-08-08

Just recently bought this title from Amazon and am amazed.

It is an excellent album which has Mike Patton (Faith No More) doing some vocals on 1 track but more prominently Igor Cavalera(Sepultura) and Andreas Kisser (Sepultura).

If you are a fan of the instrumental sections of the hugely popular Roots album you will love this as alot of it seems to be of the same vein (in fact the second track walkman has a section of music that was in another sepultura song which the name eludes me at this time).

This album is a definate must for any die hard Seps fan but even if you are a casual listener I think you will enjoy this album.

Buy this album you won't be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2004-09-12

If you like Nazareth--and I do--you are almost certain to love this wonderful collection of the Brazilian master's most enjoyable piano pieces. Marco Antonio de Almeida is a Brazilian, and he has a real feel for the music of his fellow countryman. Beyond that, however, he is a wonderful pianist, with a sure technique and supple expressive powers. He never plays for show, but always serves the needs of the music. I agree with a previous reviewer's comment that Nazareth's music is not exactly ragtime. It is, however, a captivating kind of music, popular in spirit yet classical in its intrinsic quality. It is comparable in many ways to the really great piano compositions of the ragtime master Scott Joplin. I have played this collection over and over again, and expect that I will continue to do so for a long time.

    5 out of 5 stars Maravilhoso, Marco!.......2003-01-29

I object to the title, "Brazilian ragtime." This is not ragtime. It is... well... Nazareth, and it is unique. Nazareth had many of the same influences as Joplin, but he was also influenced by Brazil. I think Nazareth was more playful than Joplin, yet also just as serious.
Almeida's performances express Brazilian character better than any others of Nazareth I have heard. Nazareth's playfulness is expressed in the tangos and his sentimentality is expressed in the waltzes. "Odeon" is brilliant. The pieces meant to sound like a cavaquinho (approximately a ukele) "Apanhei-te Cavaquinho" & "Ameno Rededa'" sound like a cavaquinho. "Fon-Fon!" gives me saudade of traffic in Rio de Janeiro.
Most importantly, Almeida's clean & precise performances articulate the complexities of the music and bring out the serious European influences. The performer of Nazareth must be both a pianista and a pianeiro.
Marco Antonio de Almeida does it well.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delight.......2002-07-20

I discovered Ernesto Nazareth by accident. His music is stunning--charming, playful, soulful, by turns. The only way to describe it is as a combination of European classical, Brazilian and South American dance, and American ragtime. Really superb music, seldom heard. Nazareth apparently wrote thousands of these miniature pieces. There are very few recordings in print. Thanks to Marco Antonio de Almeida and Klavier Records for giving us this CD.

This is a really fine record, particularly as it does not include the ubiquitous Bachiana Brasileira No. 2, which will be the only exposure that many people have to these extraordinary "fusion" pieces in which the composer marries forms of Brazilian folk music with those of the J.S. Bach. Of course, No. 5 is even more famous than No. 2, but it's a vocal work in two movements scored for soprano and eight cellos. The first movement is well known, but the second--a zippy little dance--is often omitted, making hash of the composer's intentions. All of this music is well worth knowing, especially in performances as vital and characterful as these. Super. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Classical Music.......2005-10-23

I find it very interesting that Heitor Villa-Lobos could so easily equate Brazilian folk music with that of J.S. Bach. All the more interesting are his "tributes to Bach in a Brazilian style". Each of the Bachianas Brasileiras are scored differently, and in many cases, there are many versions of the same work. This disk features four of the Bachianas Brasileiras and one setting of the Choros, Number 10.

Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4 is very thickly textured for the entire orchestra. Percussion and use of brass give the Brazilian feel while the form and many of the progressions give the feel of Bach. Villa-Lobos will often use an actual Brazilian folk melody, but make sure its archetypal shape is Baroque or he will put the melody into a "Bachian" technique. The dance rhythms, however, are Brazilian through and through. No. 5 is scored for multi-divisi cello parts and solo soprano. Only two movemnts long, the 1st is very much a vocalise with is monosyllabic melody. Contrasting, the 2nd movement is more like a patter song. Renee Fleming has a naturally beautiful and resonant voice. She does change the final note from the written C5 to high C6. No. 7's movements are labelled with Baroque forms: Preludio, Giga, Tocata, and Fuga. Like No. 4, it is scored for full orchestra using the same techniques. Villa-Lobos' last contribution of Bachianas Brasileiras, No. 9, is a prelude and fugue. Scored for string orchestra, this one evokes Bach the clearest of all.

Choros No. 10 for orchestra, piano, a battery of Brazilian percussion, and chorus is a bit of a different work. The sound is not so romantic, but revels in using dissonance in nearly a Stravinskian manner. Driving tribal rhythms, virtousic passages for individual instruments, and inclusion of a "tribal" chanting chorus make this a miniature magnum opus.

It is hopeful that with this successful recording, that more Villa-Lobos music will become standard fare. The New World Symphony exploit the exoticism and Neo-Baroque/Romanticism fo the works with pinache. The music is very approachable and fun.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, so-so follow through.......2005-09-21

Most listeners, even very experienced ones, have not heard any but the smallest fraction of Villa-Lobos's Bach-like works in Brazilian style, and the fame of the Aria from the Bachianas brasilieras no. 5 whets the aappetite to hear more. If only the other works were nearly as strong, but they aren't. It owuld take a lot of fire and imaginaiton to get these pieces to shine, but MTT essentially walks through them without much swing or passion. This was a missed opportunity, although I msut say it might be impossible for anyone to mae this music interesting for a whole hour.

5 out of 5 stars Bacchianas Brasileiras at their best.......2005-06-19

I really see no problem with this recording, I bought it several years ago, and I think is wonderfully performed
music. Tilson Thomas does a great job with the New World
Symphony Orchestra and soprano Renee Fleming. My favorites are the Bacchianas Brasileiras #5 "ALMA BRASILEIRA" and #7 with its fuga that sounds so much like Bach....

3 out of 5 stars cool music's hopes not met.........2002-11-26

Hard to put a finger on it. LOVE the music - Villa-Lobos is ALWAYS exciting (even his Quartets are wild and fresh), and the Bachianas Basilieras is a magical score. Tilson Thomas attends to the colors, but there's something lackluster about the whole performance. Something missing in the conducting. I find myself NOT in a repeat play mode with this recording! Fleming parades an overstuffed voice in the doleful #5, why is she lately so unnecessary??? Gosh, I'd so like to like her art, but it seems she's lost and passing through some weird phase vocally. Hope it doesnt last. The performances on this recording have too much pretense around them, & it's a real negative. These folks are young and gifted, maybe I'm a crank... but there's no reason not to always make music with integrity, is there? On Joan Baez' first or second album she recorded the No.5.. I'd really like to hear that recording again.

4 out of 5 stars Orchestrals sonorous, but...Renee not well-suited.......2000-10-02

The orchestral selections are rich, spacious, and sonorous...they hold the attention consistently and happily. The CD is well worth its price for those alone.

But, Renee Fleming is not suited for the music in her Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. The top-most notes get thin and screechy...and the humming section is pinched, pale, and puny -- not pleasant. I am a Renee Fleming admirer of the very first order....but, my "love" is not unconditional, and in this case...if asked, I would have advised her to avoid it.

5 out of 5 stars A delicate fusion of classical and folk timbres.......2006-09-30

Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), a blind, itinerant harper from Baroque-era Ireland, is noted for his enduring compositions, which combine the best of continental Baroque sensibilities with the traditional music of his native land. In "O'Carolan's Harp," noted early music artist Andrew Lawrence King and his Harp Consort offer a graceful, nuanced interpretation of that fusion of elements. Sparkling metal-strung Irish harps join with violins and viols, citterns and gitterns, flutes, bagpipes and occasional drums to produce a glittering period sound tending towards the pensive or quietly mournful, but periodically erupting into bouyant joy. For this recording, The Harp Consort comprises no less than thirteen musicians, including King on harps, David Douglass on violin, Paul O'Dette on theorbo, cittern and guitar, Pedro Estevan on percussion, Belinda Sykes on shawm and bagpipes, and singers Caitriona O'Leary and Nigel Rogers. Other gentle interpretations of O'Carolan's music include Narada's compilation albums: "Celtic Treasure" I and II. For more early music by Andrew Lawrence King and The Harp Consort, try the ebulliently spicey "Spanish Dances" and "Missa Mexicana," or the modal medieval beauty of "Miracles of Notre-Dame."

      3 out of 5 stars Good music...odd recording........2005-03-19

No question that there is some really nice music here, but this is one of the strangest recordings I've heard since the first decade of digital. At most volume levels, the quiet, ethereal music is too soft, esp. the solo harp pieces...then, once you find the optimal volume level for that music, the louder and more rambunctious music comes across uncomfortably loud.

With the resonant acoustic, and the variety of instrumental timbres and combinations involved, this may not have been an easy recording to make, but it seems the dynamic range is still unnaturally wide. If the music itself wasn't so enjoyable, my copy would probably be sitting in a used CD bin, but after a lot of "tweaking" with the volume level, I finally found one--and ONLY one--volume setting at which all of the music comes across reasonably clearly, w/o having to sit right in front of the speakers or listen on headphones; so I made a note of that level and put it in the CD booklet.

If you are a person who has a CD changer, and likes to make programs, you can forget including this one in a "mix:" virtually anything you play with it sounds MUCH too loud by comparison.

In case you're skeptical about my review, I am by no means "fussy" about recording quality. I've collected well over a thousand CD's over twenty years, and I can only recall having a similar complaint about a couple of other recordings.

      5 out of 5 stars Carolan's Harp.......2004-04-09

This work is a wonderful tribute to a musical genius form the late 1600's / early 1700's. Some have called Carolan the National Composer of Ireland. The arrangements are suprerb, the recording is bright and warm and the material ( like all great art ), remains fresh and vibrant even today. The music is both unmistakeably irish / continental and baroque. If you are thinking about this work ... stop thinking and get it.

Opposite Rio de Janeiro's small Villa Lobos museum -- in what was his last home -- is a modern apartment building. Its name is Edificio Sebastiao Bach. VL would have loved it: he adored Bach above all other composers. Hence the 'Bachianas Brasilieras' (which, however, owe little to Bach beyond their joy in sound and intricacy in structure).

What previous reviewers have said is true. The sound on these disks is abominable. A much better job could be done -- and should have been done -- of remastering the originals. That won't happen unless there's a sudden renewal of interest in the music of this Brazilian master.

Further, the the performances -- and the composer's conducting -- are generally lackluster. Still, any VL lover should not be without this set. Toscanini no doubt did a better job with Brahms's symphonies. But who wouldn't give his soul for a recording of Brahms himself conducting the four of them?

One special recommendation: the 'Choros' stand close to the summit of VL's art, more so than the BBs. A dance not a choral form, the 'choro' is both universally appealing and quintessentially Brazilian.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay in the early days when V-L was unrecorded.......2003-09-25

This set comprises a huge array of Villa-Lobos' works conducted by himself and, sorry to say, none too well. He seems to lack the sensitivity other interpreters can bring to his work - he's far from alone in this situation - many composers have fallen into the same trap. The textures are thick, the sound cluttered (mono it might be but surely the engineers could have done better?) and the music simply lacks the excitement of which it is capable to no small degree. In part, the orcehstra is barely capable of performing such music. Stravinsky was one thing - Villa-Lobos' internal rhythmic complexity and stubbornly awkward manuscript writing is something aside. He did not always notate in the simplest way.

Probably the best item in the set is the "Discovery of Brazil Suite". At least it received an audience and was not re-recorded until very recently. Some of the Bachianas have been handled better by others but at least this recording was a first complete set. Only the No. 5 was otherwise known.

I have to confess that if I'd encountered Villa-Lobos through these performances I doubt I'd have followed through. Thankfully I came in via the accomplished and brilliant performance of his Quintette en forme de Choros by the New York Wind Quintet. Later, I encountered the LPs of the "Discovery of Brazil Suite", credible but flat, compared with other recordings appearing around the same time. Compare, for instance, his own 1958 recording of Forest of the Amazon in which he shows how well he can conduct if he tries, not to forget the superb hi-fi stereo recording that really let light and air into the performance.

Nonetheless, I bought this set on the strength of price and to have the "Discovery" Suite on CD, along with a couple of his Bachianas. I would not recommend these discs as an introduction to the composer. Do not be tempted by its modest price!

3 out of 5 stars For Villalobos Fans Only.......2000-05-01

There is one reason and one reason only to buy this box set of historical recordings made by Villalobos himself in the 1950s: a fanatic admiration for the works of this composer. But you should know that if you love this music, you should be prepared to buy other, more recent, recordings of these works. These are mono recordings, and the sound textures you expect from this composer are therefore muddled and flattened (the beautiful Choros No. 2 is the biggest victim here, which sounds so flat that you will miss the playful contrasts between the flute and the clarinet). You should also know that Villalobos is not a great conductor, but the lack of precision in the playing is often compensated by the emotional weigth he gives to his performances (he appears to have been a crowd pleaser). There are many pleasures, however, and I listen to disc number 3, which includes the Bachianas Brasileiras 4-7 so often that it has become a soundtrack to my life. Bachianas 4 and 7 deserve more listeners. The famous Bachiana Brasileira No. 5 included in this set, is sung by Victoria de los Angeles beautifully, but this performance is also available in a single CD anthology. I am giving this set three stars: one for the historic importance of these EMI records, one for the affordability and completeness of the box set itself (it is a bargain at $6 per CD), and one for the emotional significance of hearing these performances conducted by Villalobos (I am a Latin American and this music fills me with both pleasure and pride).

You're going to love this piece. If you're a fan of really cool choral music in a populist vein--stuff like Carmina Burana--then this is the music for you. Estevez was a Venezuelan composer, and this 30- minute-long cantata tells the story of a cowboy who beats the devil himself in a singing contest by calling on the saints to keep his opponent rooted to the ground until dawn. Aside from the folk influence, the scene of the actual contest is set as a series of variations on the Dies Irae Gregorian chant from the Requiem Mass--only with maracas in a kind of samba rhythm! It's more fun than you can possibly imagine without having heard it, and this performance by a brilliant local lineup is simply perfect. The choral-music find of the decade! --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Great recording of music that deserves to be better known.......2007-02-05

I recently participated in a performance of this piece. It is dramatic, tuneful, colorful music, featuring complex Latin rhythms. A crowd-pleaser that is becoming better known in this country and deserves to be much better known. The recording fully does it justice, with great performances by soloists, chorus, and orchestra.

        5 out of 5 stars Availabilty.......2007-01-24

The label of this cd, Dorian Records, still has this record in their catalogue and sells it themselves as I experienced. So there is no reason why Amazon only gives options to order it used or expensive new through other sellers.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording of great repertoire.......2005-10-04

The Estvez is definitely the find of the decade, if not century. It seems we would have no knowledge of this were it not for Eduardo Mata. He is sorely missed. His series of recordings with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra is outstanding, and perhaps never more so than here where he is presenting unknown repertoire. The recording is fantastic, but so is the music. Worth noting is how the Dies Irae is combined with native elements in ways beyond description!

By the way, the Villa-Lobos is good too. But imagine a disc where it's not the main draw!

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1998-11-11

'Cantata Criolla' by Antonio Estevez (a venezuelan composer) resumes the authentic sounds of venezuelan plains. The combination of the choir as a narrator, the soloists as 'Florentino' (a cowboy) and 'el diablo' (the devil) as the principal actors and the orchestra creating the environment is wonderful handled. It's a supreme music work and, I think, the most important work of venezuelan 20th century music. It's a "must-be-listened"...
