Radiohead's third album got compared to Pink Floyd a lot when it came out, and its slow drama and conceptual sweep certainly put it in that category. OK Computer, though, is a complicated and difficult record: an album about the way machines dehumanize people that's almost entirely un-electronic; an album by a British "new wave of new wave" band that rejects speed and hooks in favor of languorous texture and morose details; a sad and humanist record whose central moment is Thom Yorke crooning "We hope that you choke." Sluggish, understated, and hard to get a grip on, OK Computer takes a few listens to appreciate, but its entirety means more than any one song. --Douglas Wolk

Music that makes you smarter.......2007-07-20
This had the same effect on me as the Beatles had on an earlier generation; it opened my head to what music could be. It took me to the limits of my intelligence, maybe even raised my IQ a few points. If you had an infinite number of me's with an infinite number of typewriters, we could never come up with it. It reminds me of all the ways I'm a moron. They're saying, `You don't need to be a genius, we got it covered.
Is there really a better rock album?.......2007-07-01
Ten years out, I think we have sufficient historical perspective to fairly evaluate this album.
Honestly, it seems to me there are things about "OK Computer" that one might do differently given the chance to change it. That being said, when has rock music risen higher than this? When has anyone made an album that inspires, frightens, and intrigues more than this record? I am interested to hear suggestions, but at the end of the day I think this is probably THE pinnacle for popular music during my lifetime (1970 to the present). Accordingly, I give it 5/5 stars, and consider it more favorably than anything else I am aware of. I am at a loss to understand how anyone else could fairly rate it any lower than 5/5.
one of the top five albums of all time.......2007-06-19
Radiohead's Ok Computer is by far one of the most shining achievements in music our ears have ever tasted. It is to music, what Speilberg is to cinema. Exit Music For a Film is melodic acid to my ears.
Right on the wall of perfection next to the Beatles White Album.
One of the best albums ever created. End of story. I believe most will concur!
the finest music available.......2007-06-05
I saw Radiohead at Bonnaroo in 2006 and the three songs that made everyone (80,000+ people) burst into tears were "Paranoid Android", "Exit Music (for a film)", and "No Surprises"; all from "OK Computer". I think this is the finest album ever produced. Yes, THE best ever. (Yes, I've heard The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, etc.) They all come close, (some very close) but this album is as close to perfect as there has ever been. Please ignore the reviews giving this album one star, for they are from pedestrian trash who have no right to express their opinion.
The top five albums ever produced are:
5. Innervisions - Stevie Wonder
4. Abbey Road - The Beatles
3. The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
2. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
1. OK Computer - Radiohead
Just you wait and see. Most masterpieces take a long time to be recognized as genius. They are simply over many people's heads.
Practically Flawless.......2007-06-02
I will start by saying that OK Computer is worth the money for the song "Let Down" alone. In my opinion, this song is Radiohead's finest and I consider it one of the best songs recorded in the past 20 years. Its complex layers of instrumentals and vocals build upon each other flawlessly to create the melancholy effect the Radiohead doubtlessly intended to create. It is one of those rare songs that I never get sick of hearing.
That said, the rest of OK Computer is almost equally flawless in its complexity and moodiness. Paranoid Android, Subterranean Homesick Alient, Exit Music, Airbag, and Lucky are all highlights for me, and this is definitely one album where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts--although the parts are great. The album is very much a journey (corny, I know), and definitely makes a statement. OK Computer represents one of those rare instances where an artist accomplishes, and in fact exceeds, what it set out to do.
If you don't own this album, buy it. If you don't own any Radiohead albums, buy this and The Bends. You won't be sorry.

Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach's inventive music doesn't lose any of it's contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach's "Two-Part Inventions," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," or "Wachet Auf," Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone--classical scholar or pop enthusiast--can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos's baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. --Jason Verlinde

VERY switched on and total joy!.......2007-04-27
I was thrilled to see how many people like myself love this album & were introduced to it at an early age like I was. I believe the original release was in 1963 (?) and I remember as a kid I thought Walter Carlos was the guy on the cover of the album... so imagine my surprise when years later I see the same album cover with the performer listed as Wendy Carlos. Could it be the same album? Was I about to get really happy? YOU BET! I was so delighted to see this released on CD I can't even tell you. I loved this album and listened to it repeatedly as a kid. I especially love the pure, triumphant, unadulterated and unapologetic JOY of the first track, the Cantata... wow, turn THAT up in your car and just feel the tears of joy flood your eyes... well, maybe pull over if you are like me and can't see for that very same reason!
Bach is so very well suited to this medium- to hear each line like this and really have so much great color and definition-- I think Bach himself would be so very proud of Wendy's achievement. This album was such a landmark- I also was fascinated by the Tomita Planets (a synthesized version of the same composition by Gustav Holst) when I was younger- but this album will always have a special place in my heart. If you get it for only the very first track, it will be money well spent. Having said that, the whole album is just amazing- the Air on a G string is so reverent and peaceful. The inventions are all a trip! The one in F always cracks me up because that was one of the 1st pieces of his I tried to play... very tough because the hands do exactly the same thing- but 1 measure apart. Wendy's tempos are cookin' too, such virtuosity! But the love is there too on the slower movements where the time and care with the dynamics is so evident.
GREAT ALBUM, be glad it's on CD and get it! You won't regret it.
Viva Walter/Wendy.......2007-04-21
I have just ordered this item so I can't comment on its production value however I purchased the original LP in SQ Quadriphonic and it sounded great;still does -I transferred it to CD some time ago; but I wanted a 'professional' copy. I hope this 'enhanced' version lives up to its QUAD predecessor.

Bach, enhanced by Ms. Wendy Carlos.......2007-03-13
One of the attractions of this CD is that it portrays the Moog synthesizer. Its main attraction, in my opinion, is the performance in which Ms. Wendy Carlos has revealed the cosmic aspect of Bach's music. The Moog synthesizer was used as a vehicle to achieve this goal. The enormous popularity of this recording no doubt lies in the fact that Ms. Carlos has taken the best of the Bach's music and amplified it. This music is an abstraction fitting our times. Ms. Carlos has catapulted Bach to space. One can hear the cosmic fireworks, see brilliant colors, the birth and death of the stars, feel the loneliness of the infinite stretches of space, and the ultimate power of the hope that we can conquer our own mortality. I think that this beautiful music is all about the human spirit. It is Bach at his best.
I fell in love with this recording almost three decades ago. I maintain that there is no nicer performance of Bach. The genius of Ms. Wendy Carlos sparkles. It makes me reflect on the human achievements. It is wonderful that she has produced something so great, and that so many people have benefited from her talent.
My favorites are Symphonia to Cantata #29, Prelude and Fugue #7 in E-Flat Major and Prelude and Fugue #2 in C Minor (both from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier), and also the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major.
The recording is enhanced and it has a delightful addition of about 8 minutes in which Ms. Wendy Carlos tells us about the early beginnings of this project. The CD comes with a very attractive booklet that is artistically designed and has several informative write-ups about the history and development of this project.
This recording is a must!

Switched-On Bach.......2007-01-24
Bach had a genius for polyphonic art as expressed in music. Hear his gift performed on the moog...the early synthesizer of the 60s...done tastefully and skillfully by Wendy Carlos. An eye opener in its time, yet still in demand some 40 years later. Why is that? Yes, questions...

Amazon.com essential recording
This is the album pundits like to point to when they accuse Kraftwerk of being digital-age visionaries; an all-too-easy assessment to make in the face of tracks such as "Home Computer" and "Computer Love" (not an ode to one-hand typing!). But to saddle the band with the reputation of sages is to completely miss the low-key wit and all-too-human playfulness of this album. "Pocket Calculator" and "Numbers" (the lyrics: numbers one to eight--period) could be read as tongue-in-cheek ripostes to too much bad "educational" programming, but that would smack of creeping punditry. Computer World is Kraftwerk's most lovable bundle of contradictions: at once its most technologically obsessed album and its most human. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
When Kraftwerk released Computer World on an unsuspecting public back in 1981, the thought of Electronic music and computers taking over seemed like a farce. Now, a quarter of a century later, Kraftwerk's musical vision has come true tenfold and many Electronic bands cite them as their main influence. This classic slice of Kraftwerk's musical tapestry is an astounding album filled with bleeps, blips, beats and a huge dose of melody that inspired thousands of musicians and fans to go forth and multiply (literally). Tracks like 'Computer Love', 'Computer World' and 'It's More Fun To Compute' have been sampled by artists from all genres, especially Rap and R&B. The hit single 'Pocket Calculator' may seem like ancient material, lyrically, but most of the world now operate their own iPods, Blackberries, cell phones, etc. so the meaning is not lost. Even the ominous 'Numbers' still sound slightly creepy after all these years. So, what have we learned from Kraftwerk? Everything. Warner.

Customer Reviews:
Cool electronic music (very creative huh!).......2007-07-03
All jokes aside, Kraftwerk is great electronic music, it's really simple, but original. It won't overwhelm the people that think electronic music like Prodigy is loud and imtimidating, yet it's not generic. In fact, it's some of the most unique music ever, in electronic music at least.
If their is a sound to the fabled future (with flying cars, sort of like the Jetsons), this is one of the cd's. That's about it, but if there are sound clips, than use them, because the whole album follows a patterns, with sound effects and voices (which is the only thing electronic music like Fatboy Slim is missing, if anything). Basically though, if that kind of music sounds good to you, than I'll let the rest of the thoughts go to you.
Kraftwerk should interest you if you have a remote interest in electronic music other than Crazy Frog.
10/10
Makes me FEEL GOOD.......2007-05-12
I originally wanted Autobahn but ordered Computer World along with it. All the tracks are great. I can listen to them over and over because they make me FEEL GOOD! I'm very happy with this CD.
loldongs.......2007-03-23
This CD might be too simplistic for everyone, but it's excellent chill material if you, like me, are tired of the thump-thump trance and techno.
You want this CD in your colletion, too........2007-02-22
COMPUTER WORLD songs have similar themes as THE MIX, TRANS EURO, AUTOBAUN, so you should add this to your colletion. Personally, this album rates good, but because I am a kraftwerk fan, I also recommend adding to your colletion. The Tour de France was not so good. Nor was Minimum - Maximum (if you get my CD recomedations above.)
Brilliant!!!!.......2007-01-24
After all these years this still sounds cutting-edge and fresh. Nobody does electronic like Kraftwerk. This album is a masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Back in the '70s, the rapid development of synthesizers and electronic keyboards had a huge impact on popular music, with Isao Tomita among the leading exponents of multimedia, surround-sound events associated in Western Europe with such very different musicians as Rick Wakeman and Jean-Michel Jarre. The present disc has less grandiose aims, being a well-balanced selection of, to quote the original liner notes, "Virtuoso electronic performances of Debussy's beautiful tone paintings." It's easy to scoff at the concept behind Tomita's approach--take some of the most poetic music around and give it the consistency of aural cotton wool--yet there's no denying the skill with which he translates Debussy's soundworld, preserving the harmonic interest of the piano originals and bringing out many subtleties of texture. Inevitably the slower numbers come off best--"Clair de Lune" or "Reverie" could easily become chill-out favorites. "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," however, is not so much a travesty as a vaporization of the orchestral masterpiece. A mixed bag, but with enough musical interest to make Tomita's "sound clouds" of more than just curiosity value. --Richard Whitehouse
Customer Reviews:
Another great electronic adaptation of classical music by Isao Tomita.......2007-06-02
Released in 1974, this all electronic adaptation of works by Claude Debussy is really quite good and showcases Isao Tomita and his flair for synthesizer wizardry. I think that Isao more or less captures the dreamy and haunting mood of Debussy's compositions and also adds a bit of his own (humorous) flair here and there with some "light-hearted" synth sounds.
The music on this album was recorded entirely with a moog synthesizer although the sweeping and majestic sound of a mellotron with string setting pokes through the mix on occasion. As a big synthesizer fan, I thought it was interesting that the various settings on the moog were listed as "equipment" including things like oscillators and lowpass filters etc. This particular synthesizer was pretty versatile and a virtually infinite number of sounds could be generated, as is amply demonstrated by Isao on this album.
In addition to the works originally included on Snowflakes are Dancing, the last track was taken from his Firebird album (1976) and is another work composed largely on the moog synthesizer although other keyboards were used including a Fender electric piano and a Hohner Clavinet C.
The sound of this high performance CD is excellent and trust me, the changes in dynamics virtually leap out at you.
All in all, this is an excellent recording of electronic music by an excellent electronic composer. Highly recommended along with his 1976 adaptation of The Planets (by Gustav Holst).
A classic!.......2007-05-12
This was one of my favorites for years. Tomita has a way of presenting classical music that will captivate every sense.
clair de lune again.......2007-05-07
I owned this in cassette form many years ago and wanted it in undated mode. I bought this strictly for the rendition of Clair De Lune
Synthesizers are Dancing.......2007-03-28
During the seventies, the prog music of Yes, (early) Genesis, Renaissance, and especially Emerson, Lake & Palmer cast a hypnotic spell over legions of high school nurds such as myself. Much of what held it together was a fascination with the sounds eminating from the still somewhat new Moog Synthesizer. It wasn't long before my high school art room pals & myself began looking for anything Moog, and found quite a bit outside the rock music pantheon, most notably the 'Switched On Bach' recordings of Walter/Wendy Carlos. They were interesting, but nothing quite prepared us for the release of Tomita's 'Snowflakes Are Dancing'. Perhaps it was because the timing coincided with a 'high' point in our collective psyhedelic experimentations.... Debussy's music is already an alternative, ethereal experience in the classical world, and Tomita's choice of sounds & production techniques put this recording in a class by itself (umm... especially with a pair of good headphones). I am happy to report that, upon listening to this well produced CD release with nothing more than a cup of herbal tea, I was happily transported once again. It is one delightfully Bizarre recording. 'Highly' recommended.
A seminal work that stands the test of time.......2006-08-03
Tomita was one of the early pioneers of electronic music. This CD, originally released in the 70's, was at the time a masterpiece. That was in the days of patch cords and laborious manual over dubbing, so not every cut is up to today's standars. Still, the finer pieces on this CD stand with anything ever done in the genre: luminous, melodic, and even entrancing. At its best, a magical CD highly recommended not only for the connoisseur, but for anyone who enjoys synthesized music.

Album Description
Great artists, inventors, business visionaries, and other highly creative people seem to have brains which work in an extraordinary way, and in fact, they do. Neuroscience researchers agree that a common pattern of brainwave activity called the Creative Mind Pattern holds the key to their creative genius.
The Creative Mind System CD uses breakthrough audio processes which stimulate the Creative Mind Pattern in your own brainwaves, which brings you to a natural state of heightened creativity.
These powerful recording processes have been developed by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson during 15 years of clinical research with thousands of patients, including artists, scientists, and creative people in all walks of life. These are the same techniques which Dr. Thompson has used with senior executives in Fortune 500 Companies to help them face the creative challenges of the business world.
Dr. Thompson's recordings work by blending inaudible pulses of sound that mirror the Creative Mind Pattern into an ambient musical soundtrack. As you listen, your own brainwaves begin to reflect this same powerful brainwave pattern, drawing you easily into new dimensions of creativity, out-of-the-box problem solving, and spontaneous artistic expression.
Simply play this program in the background while working, brainstorming, or enjoying any creative or artistic endeavor and experience the flow of new creative energies, insights, and inspirations. After some time of regular listening your brain will be "trained" to more easily access your deepest creative capacities and abilities wherever and whenever you need them.

Creation Is Always Happening.......2007-04-27
Sometimes, I have these...well, for lack of a better term, "slumps" where I don't feel very creative. I stop writing, I'll put down the paint brush, I'll leave the sketch pad untouched and I start thinking to myself, "Will I ever be creative again?"
For all of you people who have thought and felt the same way, let me give you some encouraging news, creation is always happening and you my friend, are an inlet as well as an outlet to all that there is in Spirit. What do you think the word, "inspired" means? It literally means to be "in the spirit" and whenever we are inspired and desire to create something whether it be a painting or a poem or a better relationship, we are doing what we were born to do.
But when I get into those "slumps", I pull out this CD, put on the headphones and just allow myself to consciously and deliberately focus my attention on what I desire to bring forth. The music calms me instantly while dissolving the blocks that I unconsciously created out of fear and I just allow myself to return to that place/that space of Eternal Grace and know that even in this new now moment something is waiting to break forth through me.
Let us all remember that no one can limit us but ourselves, that creativity is not something some are born with and others aren't, but we are all creative in our own wonderful and unique ways, that being inspired is just a breath away and that by meditating and praying to this CD, one can go deeper and tap into that Infinite Stream that is "closer to us than breathing, nearer than hands or feet..."
Peace & Blessings,
john "the Light Coach"
A modern day Mozart.......2006-11-14
I have studied piano since I was six and do some composing myself.
Dr. Thompson is an innovative in his time as Mozart was in the 1800s.
They say Mozart music balances the brain beautifully. Well this will
do it as well....with a bunch of built-in scientifically balanced
systems that simply guarantee the right mode for what you plan to do.
Apparently these pieces concentrate on the Theta waves...the ones that
we normally have during the deep dream state....where our visions are
so brilliant....but now you can have that while awake! The music is
simply beautiful...even if it didn't do so much for your creativity.
This is a Win/Win composition. Enjoy it. You'll never regret purchasing
such a symphony of the heart/mind/soul.
It seems to work.......2006-08-30
I've a creativity-demanding job where I must design and implement artificial neural networks. I was seduced by the idea of improving my brain-wave patterns because I've been studying the inner workings of the brain for more than 3 years due my undergraduate thesis about Computational Neuroscience. I agree that the brain mimics all the types of waves that come from reality: light waves, sounds, propioception, body cycles, etc. We live 2 realities: the real reality and the virtual reality created by our brains. I believe that a specific and proved pattern of sounds can synchronize the firings of our neurons and can even fix some malformed brain-wave patterns.
The music is cool to hear over and over again - the treatment demands it. I think it has made me more creative because I've solved many mathematical problems in my work since I started to use it.
But don't transform the tracks into MP3 files because the MP3 format removes the inaudible waves in the ranges (0,20) and (20000,44000] Hz that the CD format has. Those inaudible waves are supposed to do most of the work.
I enjoy this. .......2006-05-23
I have both The Creative Mind System, and Creative Mind System 2.0 - I enjoy both of them and listen regularly. I could be walking outside, and it's playing on my MP3 player, or I'm working [taking photographs] or editing them. I also lay back, close my eyes and listen at times. I'm always on the look out for others like this. There are certain very uplifting parts, in my opinion.
This Might Actually Work.......2006-04-29
I just listened to this CD yesterday for the frist time while doing some writing on my laptop. My first impression was that it was just garden-variety new age music, but I did notice that I had a higher-than-average level of concentration while writing. But here's the kicker: last night I had an incredibly vivid dream full of Jungian symbols and I think this CD might have had something to do with it. I'm going to keep on listening and maybe buy a few of the others.

i wanna clear things up for reviewer Ba "Ba".......2006-08-28
the Canon in D major by Johann Pachelbel part of the cd is an actual intruments, only the first track is done with the reel to reel tape device. maybe people should read more liner notes.
Brian Eno.......2005-10-06
I simply do not understand how Brian Eno can get credit for running others' music thorugh a fancy FX loop, claim that its "ambient" music and get crdit for it as if people had never lsitened to music in the back ground.
Achingly beautiful........2005-06-13
One of the early masterpieces of ambient music, Eno's "Discreet Music" really defies description. Broken into two halves, the extended "Discreet Music" and "Three Variations on the Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel", the music is delicate, balanced, beautiful, and stirring.
"Discreet Music" consists, per Eno's description in the liner notes, of "two simple and mutually compatible melodic lines of different duration stored on a digital recall system" that are occasionally altered "by means of a graphic equalizer". Put simply, two loops play, of differing lengths, for the period of about 30 minutes, rising and falling, swelling and coming and going, intertwining with each other. What is most amazing is how these two simple statements can be so unbelievably powerful, emotionally overwhelming, and purely engaging. It is really one of the finest pieces in all of Eno's catalog.
The Pachelbel canon variations are somewhat less interesting, though still quite enjoyable Again from the liner notes, "[e]ach variation takes a small section of the score (two to four bars) as its starting point, and permutates the players' parts such that they overlay each other in ways not suggested by the original score". The result is breathtaking, and adds a familiar resonance to it.
Anyone interested in ambient music should likely start here or with Fripp & Eno's "No Pussyfooting". If you don't have "Discreet Music", you should. Essential listening.
Love It.......2005-04-07
The first, title track, is over 30 minutes of sonic bliss
that never ever gets boring and only gets better with
repeated listenings. Fantastic discreet music to play while
you're involved in creative activities. It's probably the best single
track of ambient music I've ever heard. The remainder of the CD,
at first, doesn't seem to match the mood...but after that initial
observation the BEAUTY shines through...so the whole CD is great.
The other Eno ambient CDs I'd recommend are: Ambient 2, with Mr.
Budd on piano; Ambient #4: On Land; and the Apollo Soundtrack CD.
As far as Ambient 1, Music for Airports...well, this is a prime candidate for the greatest CD of all time.
In sum, all other ambient CDs can only hope to be in the same
ballpark as these Eno masterpieces.
if you have even a passing interest in Ambient music...........2005-02-08
For an artist that has helped shape the musical map since the 70's, and remained a sterling producer, and also has a album workrate to put most musicians to shame, it's truly surprising that Brian Eno, has so many absolutely essential albums to his name.
Here we concentrate on the period where he Created/Produced a series of defining 'Ambient' albums in the mid-late 70's, that although not the first to produce ambient albums, mastered the form to such a degree, that some 20-30 years on, these albums are frequently referenced, when discussing the genre. Although as much an electronic album as it is an ambient album, the mood here is one of detached sounds, restrained instruments and a slightly Eerie, and atmospheric solitude. using a system of two reel-to-reel tape recorders, and making the (relatively) simple process of layering sounds on top of one another, Eno was able to make stark simple sounds, from such instruments as...keyboard, synth, organ, but layer them in such a way that although the music rarely changes direction, it's beauty comes in the form of its simplicity. The first track...the epic "Discreet Music" is really nothing more than a melancholic & slight sounding relaxation drone. But its what Eno does with the sound and the use of spacial sound, that truly makes this impressive. Brief compositions of synth are gradually brought in and out of the mix, and although most listeners won't realise it on the first listen, but the relation of these elements changes over time, albeit it very gradually, and coupled with the subtle use of noise and resonance, it reveals a sound of soothing 'ambience' that washes over the listener.
The "Three Variations on the Canon in D Major" is more consistent with the stylisation of 'Classical' music, with it less akin to 'Ambient' music, and more in keeping with the compositional elegance and arrangement of piano led orchestration. which has a rather melancholy and restless feel to it, and the tone of the strings/piano feels vastly different to the synth-led first track, and its arguably the more immediate track, due to its more noticeable increase in volume/tempo, and although a more rounded sound, still remains very delicate and gentle. In fact imagine these beautifully crafted tracks as works for soundtracks for films that were never filmed, as it's deeply beguiling and littered with the romanticism that became a trademark in Eno's series of 'Ambient' Albums. As it's all so precisely performed and tremendously realised, that one can't help but fall in love with this incredible album. If you picked up any of Eno's other 'Ambient' albums, I really can't stress enough, how utterly recommended this album comes, It's not only considered one of his finest 'Ambient' albums, but also just a truly exceptional album regardless of the genre. Utterly Essential

My first exposure to J-M J composition. Very good variety in types of music. Excellent blend of classical with electronic.
Incredible.......2007-01-08
From the opening notes this is a journey into sonic landscapes that only the legendary JMJ can create. Only this time, these tracks have a more "organic" feel about them as they are performed by a symphony orchestra. I have every JMJ CD and this is easily in the top 3 if not number 1 overall. It is that good. I cannot recommend this any higher. If you are a fan of beautiful music, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD. It is simply outstanding. I only wish that more of JMJ's music is released in this format. Once you have heard this CD you will yearn for more.

Customer Reviews:
Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08
This is not much like their first album (which was a mostly clever, sometimes ham-handed combination of operatic arias and modern electronic instrumentation).
But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.
Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.
What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.
So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.
Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29
I would describe this music as a mellow and unusal mix of music where Enya meets Maria Callas, and I am a fan of both, so that's a good thing. It is so good that Billboard Music called it the best classical crossover of the year!
I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.
We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.
So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...
Better then R&B.......2004-04-16
My wife and I are always looking for new music to cuddle up to, while either watching the sunset, or getting a little heated. I think this album is a great replacement for Barry White, or some other R&B that people often equate with mood music.
These sounds will actually get your heart pounding and blood pumping without forcing you to constantly skip over songs that just get too rowdy.
Very good, yet not comparable to Diva Dance.......2004-03-12
Let me start out by saying that i love this cd. i bought it thinking that it would be like the song Diva Dance from the Fifth Element. It is most certainly one of my favorite cd's but it is nothing like the Diva Dance song. All of the tracks are much slower, focusing more on the opera part, as opposed to the techno/pop. i would still give this cd a splendid 4 out of 5 stars, but i would just like to get across the point that it doesn't have the type of songs that are advertised. thanks.
Opera Today.......2003-08-24
I just bought Operatica:Shine. It is my favorite CD, I strongly recomend it to enyone who enjoys opera! If you like "THE DIVA DANCE" in The Fifth Element you will love this CD!

Kudo's for Wendy Carlos.......2007-01-16
Wendy Carlos does an excellent job of updating all of the Classical pieces on this CD, as well as on all of her other CDs. I originally had this on Open Reel Tape, and am really happy that she has ported it over to the CD format! All of the selections on this CD can only be termed as "stirring" and it is enjoyable to hear each time it is played.
Difficulty in placing an order.......2007-01-04
Because I had difficulty navigating through the purchase process, I ended up receivibg two and I only wanted one. I gave one away. You need to review the purchase process and have a "done" or something to indicate that Amazon has received the purchase request and will act upon it. Or else I will find someone else with whom to do business!!!!
interesting concept, skillful interpretation, but sounds very dated now.......2006-12-26
As a performance, the music here is fantastic, and considering the challenges of monophonic sythesizers it is very impressively and skillfully performed. That said, if like me you were born after electronic music became commonplace, this will sound incredibly dated. The problem is that the sound programming abilities of the first moogs were limited, so the sounds are not very fitting to the music, creating a slightly comical kitschy mock-futuristic effect. Part of this effect is the womp womp womp beep beep beep sounds that now sound corny. While interesting, it sounds very anachronistic and less evocative than real instruments. I think I'll go back to orchestral performances of classical music. I'll keep this in case I ever want to make a campy future film spoof. Wow, I sure said "sound " a lot. Well, this really is all about the sounds.
Great Album, but. . ........2006-08-08
I have always enjoyed this album and Switched on Bach ever since they came out in LP form when I was young.
The thing that ruins the CD for me is the very last track on both albums, where Wendy discusses the making of the album, called Well-tempered experiments.
I think that is fun to listen to the first time you play it, but then it is obnoxious when you are playing it as you work around the house. Your home is filled with music, then suddenly, there is talking and some obnoxious noises. It just shouldn't be there.
And to do this to both albums is very disappointing. It is hard to ignore, as it is a 9 minute track!
I solved this by burning both albums onto another CD and eliminating the experiment tracks. But I would rather have the original CD's and eliminate those tracks.
As good as I remembered it!.......2006-03-03
I heard "The Well-Tempered Synthesizer" when it was first issued; like many people I was stunned by the strange, beautiful sound created by a "machine". Then I read about the difficulty of making the recordings, which took tremendous time and thoughtfulness, and this made me appreciate the human element more than the technology.
Imagine someone who, to cook breakfast, designs a henhouse, raises chickens, gathers the eggs, grinds wheat to make bread, picks fresh strawberries...all for a breakfast that could be made more easily using traditional sources or methods. Pardon the clumsy metaphor, but this is what Carlos had done: giving me Bach, by creating a new kind of chicken to get to the egg.
The sounds one hears in this recording are not as sophisticated as more modern synthetic voices, but they are still pristine and haunting. There is a sort of lonely, cosmic emptiness to the sound, but this is not discomforting; in fact, the music triumphs over the strangeness that no human hand or throat moved during the process, except at the keyboard and the 747-cockpit looking control panel of the Moog synthesizer.
Having a CD of this music is a joy, and the music delights.
