DJ Ravin takes the wheel behind Buddha Bar III, the namesake compilation from Paris's answer to Studio 54. Ravin forgoes the Dinner/Party division that Claude Challe opted for on previous installments of the series, and instead casts Dream versus Joy on this two-disc set. Dream, leaning on the traditional (syrupy Greek strings, Japanese bamboo flutes, Persian harmonists) and New Age Enigma/Deep Forest side of things (Oliver Shanti & Friends, Vangelis engineer Frederick Rousseau) is frankly too restless to be truly dreamy. The frenzied run through so many styles, seemingly solely for the sake of diversity alone, ultimately feels about as sincerely global as a mad dash through Disney's Epcot Center. The second CD in the set, Joy, pays a tad more attention to a general vibe, resulting in a much better overall effect. Rhythm rules the day here, from tabla-riffic entries by Mercury Prize winner Talvin Singh and fellow Outcastes Badmarsh & Shri to seven-drum troupe Kodo. And don't forget Ekova's Starlight in Daden. Nothing that features Deirdre Dubois's glorious voice can be all that bad. --Bob Michaels

Buy this just for "Joy"........2003-09-10
"Joy" (Disc 2), a bit more up tempo, is much more to my preference than "dream" (Disc 1). "Joy" is a great driving, working, or party mix. Bit of an indian / world music vibe with great loungey electronica beats.
Magnetic.......2003-06-17
This set was one of my favorite of all the Buddha Bar compilations. I found the songs on these CDs to be very intriguing. I highly recommend it!
Weaving disparate sounds together.......2002-05-20
Buy this CD and listen to it. In doing so you allow your mind to go on a journey. Start by imagining yourself reclining in a comfortable and lavish lounge in Paris... close your eyes, you will roam far and wide over Mediterranean soundscapes from places like Morocco, Andalucian Spain, Algeria. Enjoy the atmospheres it invites you to drink in. The disks may seem expensive, but the trip they offer requires no plane tickets... just the music.
Eastern-flavored worldbeat.......2002-04-30
This is an Eastern-flavored set. The one exception might be the Gotan Project's "Triptico" that begins Disc 2, but it fits right in.
I first listened to this CD during a three-hour drive back from Houston in the wee hours of Easter morning in horrendously stormy weather.
The first disc, "Dream," didn't particularly live up to its title, though I enjoyed it anyway.
The second disc, however, was a literal "Joy," with the music propelling me through the lightning and driving rain with a degree of appropriateness that will make it an enduring memory. It was as if the music were choreographed to the road and weather.
If you are at all interested in worldbeat/dance hybrids, buy this and try your favorite highway cruise with Disc 2 playing. It's not bad just sitting home listening, either!
Definitely my kind music!!!!.......2002-02-24
The first one I heard, got in love, and in few months collected all other CD's from Ravin and Claude Challe. Only "Lover Dose" is still missing in my collection. I got "Buddha Bar IV" last week (important notice: do not listen alone, only with your love!)
No other kind of music is good enough for me any more. "Buddha Bar III" is my favourite. Ravin, thank you for happiness, for smiles on my face, for those wonderful sounds and rhythms that you brought to my home.

I have all the Budda's 10 various CD;s.......2005-05-05
Just returned from Vietnam, got hooked on the series at various coffee houses. Bought series 1 to 10 and Buddha Beat. Great music, Oh the price in Vietnam was $1.00 each. So for 11 bucks I took a chance on the series. They are ripping us off in the states..
Very new age - fusion music.......2003-03-11
You can thank me later for turning you onto the true underground and spirit of Paris called Paris Under A Groove. The Buddha Bar thing is nice for restaurants. You know when you are eating out and their is this basic backgound music
This new CD reflects the true Parisian electronica spirit that I have been looking for.. I have not taken it out of my cars CD player since I bought it. I love these new French artistes Featuring an rare unreleased St Germain track, Florian, Terrasse Tranquille and Inckel and Versus. It brings a true jazz electronica and funk experience to the table. Paris under a groove put me in a groove.
Remember, one size does not fit all..........2003-03-04
I fell in love with the Buddha Bar collection from the start. My introduction began with Claude Challe and David Visan. Clearly the best CDs I own--everyone asks me about them and falls in love with the music. The DREAM disc in Buddha Bar III is just as ethereal and captivating as Challe's and Visan's work. However, the JOY disc was very disappointing by comparison. I found JOY to be average, fractured, lacking inspiration and lost my attention. The last 12+ minute track was wasted on a flat, monochromatic "Ghetto" track that wasn't much more than repetitious, synthesized drums--very dissapointing. Perhaps too hard a try at blending world music, with the result being disjointed and less colorful than I have become accustomed to with the other sets. BUT, Buddha Bar III is still worth owning! DREAM more than makes up for the lackluster journey, once again carrying the listner away to smoldering sunsets in Europe, waves of Middle Eastern heat and spice, haunting melodies, rhythmic chants, and some very interesting arrangements of classical and operatic pieces. DREAM has all the flavor and character of Challe and Visan, and clearly exudes its own personality. The more I play DREAM, the more I fall in love with it. This set, on the whole, will enhance your appreciation for the diversity and artistry of all the DJs associated with Buddha Bar. As we know, one size does not fit all--people's tastes vary and I'm sure others will find joy in JOY, especially if you like Japanese house music, fusion and the like. As always, the flip-top slip case is signature Buddha Bar, this time black with an elegant, celestial flare. Also, I highly recommend Challe's Nirvana 2 if you like the original Buddha Bar and Visan's Chill out in Paris 1 & 2. Just wonderful.
By far the Best of the Buddha Bar Collection.......2003-01-18
This is practically the best of the buddha bar series, and one of the best "chill out" music CD's. Highly recommended if you have a bar or a restaurent.
CD 2 is the best!
Doesn't measure up to the Buddha Bar name.......2003-01-15
Biting the bullet, I shelled out an enormous amount of cash for the first two Buddha Bar compilations based on their reputation. That was money well spent and those CDs are incredible.
Thus, it was with great anticipation that I ordered Buddha Bar 3. I religiously checked the mailbox every morning and was extremely excited to finally receive it 2 weeks after having ordered it.
Alas, although the franchise name "Buddha Bar" remains, along with the basic idea of "world music," Ravin does not measure up as a dj against Claude Challe.
I found his track selection monotonous, uninspired, and extremely boring. Even the "Joy" CD almost put me to sleep.
Save your money and spend the extra dough on the first two Buddha Bar CDs. They are well worth the cash.
