Album Description
On winter's eve in Canada, Allison Crowe took her seat at the piano and made this music. Tidings unites traditional carols and not-so-traditional songs, all warmly and passionately interpreted through artistry of Allison (and, on three tracks, her trio) in a live, studio, setting. The sounds of this session have been captured, simply and faithfully, by Engineer & Producer Larry Anschell (Pearl Jam, Sarah McLachlan, k-os) Peace on Earth ~ goodwill toward all. Tidings!
Customer Reviews:
Deeply moved........2007-03-02
Received this as a gift over the holidays, and wow.... just, wow. Allison's singing is remarkable in a way that is difficult to put to words. There's an essence to her singing, a vitality that you can appreciate only in the experience. It hit me while sitting in a candle-lit living room on a cold night sipping tea with my lover, and finding that we both were suddenly moved nearly to tears by this great CD. (Yes, I'm referring here to the hauntingly good rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah").
The song selection is great (doesn't hurt that Allison's included "In My Life" -- one of my favorite Beatles songs), and this has certainly made it into my stack of favorites. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
So beautiful..........2006-12-16
One of the most beautiful Christmas albums I have ever heard. You have to hear her sing Angel. Her music will take your breath away. If you like Sarah McLachlan, you'll like this.
Hidden little masterpiece.......2006-05-12
The versions of traditional songs are very good. I think she has a very good voice. This is a nice simple clean album. It is built on talent and passion. Sometimes it reminds me a little of Cher on the more upbeat songs and a bit like Norah Jones on the softer pieces. This is a hidden little masterpiece.
Allison Crowe - Watch Her Rise To The Top.......2006-02-21
Allison Crowe is on her way. I downloaded some of her music here on Amazon, visited her website and wondered where she had been hiding. Allison's music is soulful and full of passion. If you like Norah Jones, you will love Allison. I hear Allison is working on a new CD. I am betting it will be dynamite! WATCH FOR IT!
stunningly beautiful.......2005-11-16
Allison Crowe succeeds in spectacular, inspired, fashion with this highly original approach.
She's gathered together songs of the season that reflect thoughtfulness and spirituality well outside the standard.
Without the sort of polish normally heard on holiday records, Crowe's natural vocals and piano accompaniment are truly stunning.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent songs with amazing vocals and top-notch guitars. So great!.......2006-11-17
I might have overlooked this album because I am more into thrash and pure metal than into hard rock. Ok, I've always admired Joe Lynn Turner for his works with Yngwie Malmsteen and Rainbow, but it had been a long time since I had a thought about him. But there's also this guy, Al Pitrelli, who used to work for Savatage and for Megadeth, and his guitar playing and tone are second to none, and you know, for some reason I went to check his discography and this album popped up. So I said "JLT and Pitrelli together? Let's check that out!", and well, what I lucky guy I feel I am!
First of all, this music is purely melodic Rainbow-like AOR, as good as it can get from monsters of this height. Also guaranteed to keep your girlfriend happy, and you'll still be able to listen to rock when you're together on the road. :-D In any case, I encourage you to consume this sugar-fuelled set of amazing songs, which is more than good in spite of its commercial taste -- it does taste good, don't worry.
From the soaring opener "Power Of Love" you know you are into something really cool with this album. JLT sings his lungs out, and then Pitrelli puts the axe to sing too. Very enjoyable! I also enjoy to infinite proportions the energetic hardrocker "Jacknife" and the mid-paced "Devil's Door" -- ah! Pitrelli and his shining solos again! But I don't skip a single track when listening to this album. JLT knows how to sing with his beautiful, well-tempered and wide-ranged voice, and he plays the Midas King role all the time: whatever he touches instantly becomes pure gold. Take for example the ballad "Live And Love Again". It might have sounded banal sung by anyone else, but JLT's pipes make it sound so classy! There's no doubt that he is one of the best singers in the business.
By the way, the European version of this album has a bonus track that is worth a listening too -- "Unfinished Business". It is a pretty old-school hardrocker, in the normal vein of JLT, as enjoyable and fun as always.
To conclude the review, this is high-quality ear-friendly rock that will treat you with every played note. Nothing revolutionary, but perfectly crafted and amazingly sung, so it deserves five stars -- dues paid to Rainbow, of course. :-)
DIAMONDS AMONGST THE ROUGH.......2005-03-30
I have to admit that I love Joe Lynn Turner's vocals but not around hard rock more the slightly mellower stuff. This CD has a bit of both but probably just a touch too much of the harder edged style to gain an extra star from me. Hate when others do this but probably three and half stars is close. "Power Of Love" is a fantastic start if not eighties derived somewhat but the vocal pipes are fabulous. "Devil's Door" is a wash with swirling keyboards and is the owner of the best chorus on the whole outing and as such rears its head as best on show in the early stages. "Jacknife" has the whole hammond keyboard Purple period feel and isn't really that great (but again owns a chorus that wont leave your head) perhaps a grower but seems a little too heavy handed to cut through. Then we have musical bliss with "Really Loved" with its bourbon soaked vocals and simplicity. This is the kind of stuff I would like a couple more of perhaps. "Rest of My Life" is also a smokey bar number and it too is sublime. Lovers of the James Christian and Bryan Adams school of smooth stylish rock will find paradise here. The later songs are all solid enough but drop off the high side of some of the early highlights, "All Alone" is the noticable exception if not a little too repeatative. All in all not a monsterous classic but a nice solid CD that will provide much pleasure to those who search for diamonds amongst the rough.
Another classic Joe Lynn Turner album.......2005-03-28
The Good
The last time I heard Joe Lynn Turner was on Brazen Abbott's last release, although he sounded okay, I thought that it wasn't the JLT I remembered. I was surprised when I gave The Usual Suspects a spin; this is the JLT I know and love! "Power of Love" is a mix of chugga-chugga riffing and sustained power chords. Joe's vocals are still melodic with just enough ruggedness to remain edgy. The persistent chorus really draws you in.
A wicked riff charges up "Devil's Door". This track focuses on JLT's powerful vocal prowess, pushing the instrumentation to the background. The periodic keyboard tones help underscore the song. The driving guitar and keyboard rhythms on "Jack Knife" recall the days of Rainbow. Al Pitrelli lays down an off-the-wall solo. "Really Loved" is a slow tempo, soulful track with keyboard heavy verses. Arena rock riffage blended with clean arpeggios command "Rest of My Life". The lyrics that make up the chorus are instantly memorable as Turner lays down some great layered vocals.
"Ball and Chain" has a funky muted riff and piercing lick to it. The guitar combo helps drive home the message of not being able to escape a troubled lover. Pitrelli delivers again during his solo. "Live and Love Again" is a bluesy power ballad about moving on (love that power bridge). JLT ends on a high note with "Unfinished Business". It has fast paced, hard driving rhythms that mingle well with Joe's forceful lyrics. Shades of 70s Deep Purple organ tones can be heard here.
The Bad
Nothing
The Verdict
Another classic Joe Lynn Turner album! You don't have to be a longtime fan to enjoy JLT's brand of feel-good rock music.
Melodic blues-based effort deserving of radio play.......2005-02-11
Most of JLT's CDs never really seem to disappoint, in my opinion. Although I didn't care for HTP 2, overall he does have quite an impressive catalog. A personal favourite of mine is his first album, the brilliant masterpiece "Rescue You" (and his unreleased 1986 demos for his planned second album - some of the songs are KILLER!!). On The Usual Suspects, Joe delivers what we expect; with the welcome return of keyboards and "bigger" choruses on some songs, a refreshing dimension to blues-based melodic rock in the Deep Purple vein is achieved...no real surprises, but catchy and well written, and I believe slightly better than his last CD. Overall to me it sounds similar to the first HTP album from 2002. Standout tracks include "Really Loved", "Into The Fire", "All Alone", and "Live and Love Again".
On a side note, Glenn Hughes is ok, but I think it would be real interesting to hear Joe record a duet with Jim Jamison (of Survivor)..they toured together on the Voices of Classic Rock tour...anyone else agree?

Brilliant!.......2004-09-04
I've been listening to this soundtrack almost continuously since I got it last month. I liked John Ottoman's soundtrack for X2: X-Men United, but this soundtrack is in another league altogether. The initial melody is haunting, and Ottoman sustains the themes well through changes in mood and plotlines. And his conducting cannot be improved upon.
I have a lot of soundtracks in my library, but this is one of the best.
The Usual Suspects Soundtrack.......2003-01-15
I love this cd the orchestra is wonderful the melody is to die for.
Evokes Emotion Beautifully.......2001-12-20
This score is masterfully composed, allowing maximum emotion to be evoked from listener/viewer. The melodic main theme is almost hypnotic, mysterious, and sad at the same time. It searches for something concrete, which is resolved when in conjunction with the film. The piano is played beautifully, especially in the title theme, the most moving of the pieces, in my opinion.
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT !.......2000-08-06
Tremendous movie, Tremendous soundtrack ! Powerful, gripping and extremely well conducted music that you just don't get to hear too much of anymore in soundtracks.
Stupendous!.......2000-02-24
I must admit, this is an incredible composition,BUT, though certain tracks are INCREDIBLY MINDBOGGLINLY great, others are mediocre and sound like a soundtrack. Don't het me wrong, those certain tracks are definatey worth the pice of the album but don't expect to not hit the 'skip' button when listening.

Perhaps not *quite* what you want..........2007-04-27
If you're like me and you have a hankering for "film noir music," you're probably thinking of a lonely sax playing an urban, 3 AM melodic line, backed by some bluesy chords from a small jazz ensemble. Like John Barry's excellent theme from "Body Heat," for example, or something like Jerry Goldsmith's theme for "Chinatown."
Never mind the fact that the great majority of films noir from the classic period (1941-1955) didn't have jazzy background music like that at all, but was usually scored with quasi-classical romantic string music (with a solo violin) or bombastic, brass-heavy instrumentals.
Anyway, this CD isn't the 3 AM sax stuff.
Not to say that there isn't some of that on here. You might like "Godfather" (not, however, the theme you're thinking of from the Francis Ford Coppola Godfather films), or "Blues for Guylaine," or even the bluesy passages from Bernard Herrmann's "Taxi Driver" suite.
But there's some odd stuff on here that causes me to wonder how, precisely, it qualifies as "film noir."
For instance, the dreamy carnival music from "The Elephant Man," or the angular string music in "Buckets of Blood" (from "Carrie," not the Roger Corman film). Seems like a reach. The first cut, "Turning Pages" had me unpleasantly surprised, and triggered my I've been ripped-off alarm. And "Chop Shop" has a wah guitar that sounds a lot more like a 70's blaxsploitation film than film noir.
The inclusion of Angelo Badalamenti helps redeem the collection; his music for "Twin Peaks," "Fire, Walk With Me" and "Mulholland Drive" redefines what a noir theme should sound like.
This CD is odd, no doubt about it. "Godfather," which sounds decidedly noirish, is from a comedy/drama film about a man who's paid to impregnate lesbians. "The Wrong Man" music is relentlessly perky but comes from a bona fide noir. (Okay, a Hitchcock noir, not quite the same thing.)
The key here, I guess, is to enlarge the scope of what you think noir film music ought to be... But perhaps a better title for this collection of music might have been "Neo-Noir!"
Still, credit must be given to liner notes writer Eddie Muller and his Film Noir Foundation for at least directing the current noir wave. His book "Dark City" turned me - and probably many others - to noir. Long may his tribe increase!
Summary: If you're looking for classic/sterotypical, 3 AM wet-pavements-in-the-Dark-City noirish stuff, try John Barry's "Body Heat," which I enthusiastically recommend. Barry practically *owns* that silky/sexy slow sax genre.
Nice imaginative collection.......2006-08-04
A collection of musical cues from various film noir scores, but imaginatively assembled to constitute a new score for a nonexistent movie. Cleverly done, choosing from excellent sources, and not going for the easy or the obvious. It's exciting to hear someone making a connection between Bernard Herrmann and Angelo Badalamenti.

Another Houston bred winner..........1999-11-28
When I first decided to buy this album I was a little skeptical...are these boys capable of layin' it down 'ala Scarface or is this just a case of "wanna-be-Geto-Boyz"...I was surprised to hear how smooth the beats were on this album...looks like Scarface and the other Geto Boyz have a little competition brewing in Houston by way of the Fifth Ward Boys...very fresh and new unlike a lot of the music that we hear today that's basically a lot of sampled and over sampled retreads...take a listen to the track titled, "I know"...it's reminiscent of a smooth Marvin Gaye ballad...pick up this album and U will not be disappointed...long live the dirty south...

It's the newest Shanklin album...newest batch of laughs!.......2003-03-11
Finally, after a lull, Shanklin is back, and cranking out new parodies!
This newest batch includes parodies concerning the War on Terror (in a good way), a fantastic Bush song, which makes fun of his speech habits somewhat, but is not exactly disrespectful, and lots of fun to listen to.
A re-mix of what I understand to be a Beetles song, Uncle Albert, where the whole crew is singing their apologies to Albert for losing his election.
Scare Wars II: Attack of the Clowns. Anyone that's heard their parody of "Episode One: The Female Menace" will enjoy the "sequel" track about the mindless democratic clones in a relentless pursuit of "W".
There's also a really funny track where Arafat sings to Sharon about how "It's MINE, Sharon!"
Lots of laughs, lots of fun. As usual, a few borderline sexual jokes, but not quite as bad as Clinton. (Nothing is quite so bad as Clinton!)
Warning! This album contains parodies!

This has some good selections but really doesn't have the best because it is so subjective. i certainly got bored with many of the pieces they selected in the group, while others had my foot stomping. i recommend getting the original stuff anyways.
"must have compilation for film buffs".......2000-11-24
Milan Records celebrates the history of popular cinema with a 2-CD anthology of the music that drove the most affectionately remembered films of the modern cinematic era. These indelible musical impressions come courtesy of the most renowned film score composers of our time - Maurice Jarre, Max Steiner, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, Bernard Herrmann, Randy Edelman and Henry Mancini.
Released into two general categories, the album presents moments from films of "Love, Passion & Comedy", on disc one - gives us the most powerful classic love themes from "WEST SIDE STORY", "DR. ZHIVAGO" and "LOVE STORY", and features newer classics from "TITANIC", "THE TRUMAN SHOW", "UNCHAINED MELODY" and on the lighter side "A FISH CALLED WANDA", "BENNY & JOON" and one of the most familiar themes ever written "THE PINK PANTHER" from legendary icon Henry Mancini.
On disc two "ACTION, ADVENTURE & SUSPENSE", includes themes from Alfred Hitchcock's landmark films "NORTH BY NORTHWEST" and the absolutely unforgettable "PSYCHO" finale...then the greatest action hero of all time leads off with Monty Norman's "JAMES BOND THEME", and action cues from "BACKDRAFT" and "SPEED"...next up the Academy Award winning theme from "THE LAST EMPEROR" and "GETTYSBURG" main title, one of the best-selling score CD's of all time.
A must have for "movie-music" collectors and film buffs, including music lovers and anyone who really enjoys a little nostalgia now and then...thank you Milan for this trip down memory lane and the amazing legacy of 20th Century Cinema!

Customer Reviews:
Killin'!!!.......2004-06-28
Ryan Kisor means business. There is some serious blowing in this session. The Rhythm section is tight and Willie Jones III swings like a mother#$^%*&!! It reminds me a little of Herbie Hancock's "Empyrean Isles"...just the right blend of classic standards with HOT originals done remarkably with command and precision. Should be added to any true jazz lover's library. I live for this music. Beautiful Job!
A Great album!.......2000-05-12
Ryan Kisor's playing on this album is well worth the purchase. His big sound and great chops are only going to get better!

Album Description
At times tender, sometimes brutally riveting, this dynamic score demonstrates composer John Ottman's ability to delve into a variety of musical styles and bizarre orchestral techniques, while at the same time carving out a definite signature of his own. With themes and motifs stunningly strong, yet often delicate in thier suggestions, Ottman has created a musical world for The Usual Suspects, and a symphonic adventure that stands on its own.
