5 out of 5 stars Much good music, many styles & perspectives, in one place .......2004-10-15

Just some of the highlights:

Michael Franti's "We Don't Stop"

Faithless' "Mass Destruction", an apt ingenious re-visioning of just what is a weapon of mass destruction. (And the video is awesome, too.)

Lyrics Born feat. Lateef with perhaps the most beautiful hip-hop track I've every heard

Paris, in an intro to "What Would You Do" that may knock the cobwebs off the musty assumptions in your mind, re-arranging and editing Dubya's language to reveal the subtext, followed up with a meaty rap accompanied by a heart-tugging chorus.

Le Tigre's "New Kicks", beats behind soundclips from the 2003 peace marches, plus a chanting chorus that starts with "Peace -- Now", segues to "This is what democracy looks like, this is what democracy sounds like", and continues, indeed, to new kicks for old ideas.

Free*land with "We Want Your Soul" -- in the tradition of list poems (e.g. John Lennon), with a killer ending.

Plus Anti-Flag, Hamell on Trial, Ani Di Franco, Sonic Youth, Jurassic 5, and over a dozen more.

Album Description

The longest running, and THE total cult extreme metal band from Finland returns with their seventh studio album ABSENCE OF WAR DOES NOT MEAN PEACE. Well-known all over the world, the band has been going strong for over 10 years now. Impaled Nazarene has toured all over the world, playing in 24 different countries on four continents!!!!! The band has shared stage with countless other metal bands, from Emperor and Mayhem to Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel.

Absence Of War...was recorded at Astia studio by Anssi Kippo(Children Of Bodom, Entwine) and mixed at world famous Finnvox studio by Mikko Karmila (Stratovarius, Nightwish etc).

Cover photo and lay-out pictures were especially shot for the band by the leading Finnish photographer Tomi Härkönen.

Musically the band shows a bit more melody, without sacrificing their brutal sound. The album is definitely the most varied one since the acclaimed Suomi Finland Perkele album. The band themselves calls it the year 2001 version of the said album, except that the new one is 666 megatons more brutal and in-your-face.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Black Punk Metal=IMPALED NAZARINE!!!\m/.......2006-05-25

Being a punker as well as a full-blown Metalhead, this is, well, music to my ears... I've read about Impaled Nazarene for quite sometime, but never had the chance to check em' out until now. Wish I had sooner because as far as my musical tastes go, this is just what I like to listen to. I wanted to check out this album first, which, to a super hardcore fan of this band may have been a mistake (I often assume that about the albums i tend to favor), but the cover was awesome: An awesome set of Black Metal boobies sporting a full belt of ammo?... Dude, this has got to be either the definition of Extreme Metal or extremely lame... This is extreme metal, Music in the Black Metal community that is just uncommon and to me, unique. Not to mention it just rips!! If you're looking for s00pR gRiM Tr00 cVlt Black metal, go check out something else, if you're looking for straight up Death Metal with BM influences, sorry, wrong again... But if your a music lover of all sorts, preferably Heavy.. and dig a variety of styles from Black, Thrash, Heavy and, well also love punk rock... well, you may have found one of your new favorite bands right here... this record is awesome from start to Finnish!!! Also, if you're into Thrash at all, check out AURA NOIR, they're another unorthodox Black Metal band that needs to be heard!\m/

5 out of 5 stars Respect the Masters..........2003-08-14

Nuclear Cyberpunk Sadometal... that was their own description of their music in the early days, and sure that spirit was lost in the last albums, but IN returns triumphally with this record, their best since Suomi Finland Perkele. the production has improve 100%, the songs are more varied than before and the lyrics are childishly great as always. this is the best metal record with a punk attitude that I have listen to in a long time, highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Infrared Ice Cream.......2003-05-01

This is wanna-be heavy poser metal. I once read a fantastic interview in THE GRIMOIRE was awesome! However, the music is simply WEAK! 1 star is to high in my book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix Of War, Black, And Thrash Metal.......2003-03-29

Impaled Nazarene is definitely one of the most unique bands in the black metal genre. They have perfectly mixed the cold hard riffs of black metal with the raging guitars of thrash. The best thing about this album is the ability to both feel the darkness of the songs but and hear the mosh pit ready sound. I love the vocals and lyrics on this album; they are just so aggressive and pis sed off that you just can't help but bang your head and scream along. The riffing is amoung the best out there in music and it just overwhelms you. I just have to say that the drummer truly makes you feel the music. Really astounding actually. I am just wondering why there are so little bands that play music that Impaled Nazarene. My personal favorite song is the loud metal anthem "Hardboiled and Still Hellboud", but other greats include "The Lost Art of Goat Sacrificing" and "Via Dolorosa". Pick up this album, put it in your C.D. player, and you will understand why this is one of my top ten favorites albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, provocative, plaintive, mesmerizing..........2002-07-05

In Jennie Orvino's "Make Love Not War," poetry and music combine into a rich, spicy musical-verbal stew, fulfilling as a good meal. Orvino is heartfelt but never sappy, sultry and sexy without being vulgar, equally passionate about war and love. Her musical collaborations are in a range of styles, each piece distinctive. Orvino performs her poetry: acts it, scats it, bats it about like the kittenish tiger she is, tickling and teasing in a juicy purr.

Orvino is fearless as she steers from rooms of sexual ecstasy to lands of devastation. Salvation lies somewhere on the road between those two realms. She mourns the horrors of war, but in erotic passion there is hope for transcendence. Each informs the other: the consciousness of such horror brings intensity to love, and love is the only possible respite when bombs are devastating your home.

Eros is Orvino's ministry, healing and redemptive. She personalizes the beseiged, becomes a warrior boy, wonders about those who were kissing for the last time before being buried in rubble. And in her poems, she loves as if each encounter might be the final collision of skin against skin.

I'm finding that "Make Love Not War" is a good thing to listen to while driving. In Los Angeles, at least, you see humanity at its lowest ebb while passing it by enclosed in your bubble. The driver who throws his lit cigarette out the window, then veers in front of another car. The sad-faced woman at the bus stop. The sullen young man with his rap bass so up it shakes the car next to him. But then you let Orvino and her musicians take you over. The toddler runs in her yellow dress in a yellow field. A war-blasted landscape regreens and reanimates. People kneel at each others‚ feet, rubbing one another, as she puts it, like "deer at a salt lick."

You smile. You might cry. At home, you'll reach for your lover. That kiss might well be your last. Make it sweet.

4 out of 5 stars good driving music.......2003-11-13

I just received my copy of this album yesterday and listened to it while driving to meetings for work. It makes the time fly!

But on a more serious note, it is refreshing to hear my viewpoints -- on not just this war, but US imperialism in general -- reflected back at me through music. There is a wide mix of genres here which appeals to me as well. From folksy-sounding tracks like "United States" by Seize the Day, to punky tracks like Sleater-Kinney's "Combat Rock", to hip-hop Public Enemy's "Son of a Bush", to just plain groovy finds like Yo La Tengo's "Nuclear War", I think that just about every supporter of the anti-war movement could find something here that they would want to listen to over and over again.

My immediate favorite was "Nuclear War" by Yo La Tengo. The lyrics are very simple, but the call-and-response format featuring children singing "You can kiss your a** ... goodbye, goodbye..." is chillingly amusing. The track from Seize the Day is a close second. The last line, "Somebody made a killing in your name / so take your power back, or take the blame" should be enough to make anyone think about what it means to be an American at this point in history.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it now and save it for the next war..........2003-05-03

I think I ordered this before the Iraq war started and by the time it arrived the war was "over". You can now view it as an "historical" document of the pre-Iraq anti-war movement or you can listen to it as a statement of ongoing opposition to US/British neocolonialism. I don't believe the war is really done and think this compilation will continue to have some resonance in the next few months and years.
And... I like a lot of the music. I am a lifelong Midnight Oil fan (check out their catalogue if you want real rock and roll activism!)I am familiar with Public Enemy, Billy Bragg, and Ani Difranco (and you probably are too) but I hadn't heard many of the other artists. I was pleasantly surprised by many of the other tracks and think that the compilers of this CD did a fine job of representing a variety of musical styles. Outstanding tracks are DJ Disorientalist, Alabama 3, Torben and Joe, and a fun and faithful version of the Pistol's "God Save the Queen": Persian Carpets' "Allah Save Queens".
Buy it now. You can dance to this compilation and it probably won't be in print for long. And Cuba, Iran, and Syria are looming on the horizon....

3 out of 5 stars Generally mediocre, with some excellent tracks.......2003-03-24

As I am an anti-war supporter, I felt vaguely obligated to purchase this CD. While not disappointed, unless you feel extremely strong about the political benefit in purchasing this album, there's not any huge reason to reccommend it. The tracks by Ani DiFranco (Self Evident) Billy Bragg (Price of Oil) are alone absolutely wonderful songs, with an excellently communicated message and catchy, as well. Sadly, tracks such as Nagasaki Nightmare are common, seem disturbingly out of place, and generally distract from the overall feel of this album. As far as compilation discs go, I feel that mood or tone were lost in favor of a similar message; however, this ends up in distracting from the whole, turning this album into an excercise in tolerance (at worst) or abuse of your next track button.

Buy it if you're strongly against the war in Iraq. If you don't care, buy Ani DiFranco or Billy Bragg albums on their own - much more cohesive and often brilliant.
